Obama Beats Out Clinton and Carter for Second Grammy

NewsBusters.org -- Media Research CenterSo, you think Nobel Laureate Al Gore is the only Democrat that can win meaningless awards from sycophantic Hollywoodans?

Well, think again, for on Sunday evening, presidential candidate Barack Obama (D-Ill.) won his second Grammy in three years (first win pictured to the right).

Deliciously, and possibly a foreshadowing of things to come, Obama's victory came at the expense of a Clinton.

As reported by Reuters moments ago (emphasis added throughout):

Fresh from their feud on the campaign trail, Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama beat Bill Clinton in a contest almost as closely watched as the primaries being waged across the United States -- the music industry's Grammy Awards.

Obama on Sunday won the spoken word Grammy for the audiobook version of his blockbuster tome "The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream." It marked his second statuette, following a win in 2006 for "Dreams From My Father," an audiobook for a memoir first published in 1995.

Wait for it:

Bill Clinton was seeking his third Grammy with "Giving: How Each of Us Can Change the World," a call to public service. Another former Democratic president, Jimmy Carter, also was in the running, with "Sunday Morning in Plains: Bringing Peace to a Changing World," a collection of Bible lessons. Carter won the award last year.

Does it get any better than this?

Of course, despite many audio books released by Republicans every year, GOP authors rarely achieve Grammy status:

No Republican politician has won the category since Everett Dirksen, an Illinois congressman and senator, in 1968.

Why do you think that is?

Al Gore's Oscar

This article begins, "So, you think Nobel Laureate Al Gore is the only Democrat that can win meaningless awards from sycophantic Hollywoodans?"

Al Gore did not win an Oscar for "An Inconvenient Truth."  It is a lie.

The Oscar was won by  Lawrence Bender/Laurie David, producers, and Davis Guggenheim, director.

Al Gore didn't win squat.

How does a man who was raised in Indonesia and Hawaii and residing in Illinois and D.C. obtain a southern accent ala Martin Luther King?

→ Not lost on youth

I remarked a couble of months ago that Obama's perfect mimic of Dr. King's cadence is not lost on the youth of America who spent their school years listening to Dr. King's speeches.

Strange, isn't it?  Dr. King was a Conservative of the noblest order, and as he lay bleeding on that balcony, young Jesse Jackson knew exactly how to hijack that noble movement.

The other night on Turner

The other night on Turner Classic Movies, I watched "All the King's Men", Broderick Crawford, 1949 (http://www.imdb.com/...). Crawford started out as an unknown, small time, honest politician. He gradually gained enough power and influence that he was given the nomination for governor. My point is, Willie Stark started promising everybody everything, all free. He talked about going after the rich, free hospitals and health care for all, among other things. It occured to me even though this is 1949, Stark today would be a liberal/socialist democrat along the lines of Hillary and Obama. The very things Stark said in his speech are the very things Obama is saying today - nothing of substance, but lots of populist give-aways.

Republicans need to wake up.

I can't believe people actually relish the fact that Obama might edge out Hillary for the Dem nomination.

With Hillary we have a very good shot at retaining the White House as well as making big gains in the House, and limiting the damage in the senate.

With Obama, we will likely lose the White House, and face increased majorities of Democrats in the House and Senate. Is that what you want? Do you realize that there isn't a dime's worth of difference between Hillary and Obama on the issues? Do these Republicans rooting for Obama worry in the least about what he (as the most liberal Senator in congress) would do to this country if elected with a Democrat congress?

WAKE UP REPUBLICANS!!!

We all better hope that Hillary pulls this thing out.

"women and minorities hardest hit"

MC, I understand your concern.

However, at the end of the day, there really isn't a whole heck of a lot we republicans can do about who the other party noninates as there candidate.

No matter which one we may or may not be rooting for.

I realize that.

It just frustrates that so many Republicans are rooting for Obama. They don't have the forsight to see what the consequences of that are. Frankly, they're not good.

"women and minorities hardest hit"

MC

MC,

Do you believe I'm rooting for Obama, and lack foresight concerning what his victory over Hillary might mean for the country and/or the GOP? Do I strike you as being so obtuse and addle-minded? ns

Noel,

Between you, Blonde and Neal Boortz, I have to admit that my resistance to voting for Sen. McCain has weakened somewhat over the last several days. In fact, it may have even cracked slightly.

I may yet change my mind at some point, but that still doesn't do much for my now ingrained belief that a McCain presidency would damage an already fractured party, possibly to a point that is beyond repair. If that were to happen, it is quite conceivable that the conservatives could be out of the picture for the next two decades.

Given the decline in the party we have seen over the last six years, and if McCain does get elected, what kind of shape do you see the party being in two, four, or even eight years down the road?

No, I definite do not think you lack foresight.

But I definitely get the sense that many on our side are rooting for Obama and DO lack the foresight. I don't necessarily think you do, however, this post gave me that impression somewhat.

"women and minorities hardest hit"

MC

MC,

Well, that was kind of a non-denial denial. :-)

As I've stated before, I believe the Clintons are MUCH more dangerous for this nation at this point in time than Obama. In fact, I think it's not even close. Furthermore, this is something that to me is quantifiable and not mere conjecture.

By contrast, that Hillary will be easier to beat than Barack IS a speculation. Given his lack of experience and lack of their political machine, he could end up MUCH easier for us to defeat. MUCH!

But, that is ALSO speculation. As such, since there is NO doubt in my mind that the Clintons represent a MUCH greater clear and present danger to freedom, democracy, and capitalism than he does, in my view, the sooner they are out of the equation, the better for ALL of us.

Now, I realize that goes counter to what many on our side believe. That's OK. I like being a maverick every now and again!  :-)  ns

I have heard that line of reasoning.

I have heard the line of reasoning that Barack could be easier to defeat than Hillary, however, given his performance against the Clinton machine thus far, I have doubts about our chances against him.

My chief concern is the Congress. I honestly believe that the GOP can retake the House with Hillary at the top of the ticket. There are 60-70 Democrats representing districts that Bush won, and every single Republican challenger (and vulnerable incumbent) can tie his/her opponent to Hillary. I have no doubt that GOP congressman and prospective congressman are chomping at the bit to have Hillary at the top of the ticket, and every red-state congressman/senator is deathly afraid of that. My newly elected Democrat Senator, Claire McCaskill, has said as much, and apparently it was a big reason why she has chosen to back Obama.

I relish the fact that Obama is giving Hillary a run for her money, I just want her to pull it out in the end. Basically, the ideal situation in my view, is for Hillary to win, but in the most crooked, smoke-filled room, and sleazy way possible - and that Democrats backing Obama view it that way as well.

"women and minorities hardest hit"

MC, I do not think McCain can beat Hillary or Obama.

I am of the belief that McCain's MSM "friends" are going to turn right around and stab him in squarely in the back as soon as the cheering in the convention hall dies away. Possibly even before.

I know some here are of the belief that the MSM has lost a great deal of influence, and to a certain extent that is true, but they are still the main source of news for a large percentage of Americans.

Additionally, it would be a grave mistake to discount the damage that has been done to the party, and conservatism in general, by George W. Bush.

None are so hopelessly enslaved as those who falsely believe they are free. -J.W. von Goethe

I'm well aware of the damage done by W.

However, I think McCain is better than Bush in the areas that conservatives have neglected over the past 7 years - particularly, spending and the expansion of government. At least McCain had the foresight to oppose Medicare Part D.

I'm under no illusions that McCain is a rock-ribbed conservative, however I think he has a 75% chance of defeating Hillary, and almost zero chance of defeating Obama. Nancy Pelosi has been quoted as saying that the Dems will pick of 75 House seats if Obama is the nominee. She might be overexaggerating a bit, but there no doubt is a positive "down-ticket" effect with Obama, and a highly negative one with Hillary.

"women and minorities hardest hit"

MC

MC,

You think we've got a 75% chance of beating Hillary? Wow. That's aggressive. Trust me, if I felt that way, I'd be out campaigning for her!!!  :-)

That said, is the calculus of the Dems picking up so many Congressional seats with Obama based upon the expectation of an increase in young and black voters? Wouldn't this only impact districts with a lot of young and black voters?

On the flipside, where's the calculus on the Great White Hope vote? And the racist vote amongst non-black minorities?

Before this is dismissed offhand, let's understand that the Clinton race card calculus was indeed based upon her campaign's belief that by tossing out said race card, enough racist Democrats would vote for her to stop an Obama presidency.

This appears to have failed at the primary level -- so far. However, were the Clintons totally wrong about this, or was it just a failing strategy during Democrat primaries?

Adding it all up, just as the idea of the first black president -- and a darned charismatic person at that!!! -- has captured the imagination of blacks and young voters (and others!), isn't there sadly still a component of the electorate that will vote to stop it? Or was the Clinton machine totally wrong on this?

Something else to consider is another interesting demographic difference between Obama and Clinton voters. Obama is capturing the more educated voter, while Clinton is capturing the less educated. Comically, this doesn't seem to be a huge surprise, for you really have to be an idiot to vote for her! :-)

All kidding aside, as racism and prejudice are typically products of ignorance, how many of these less-educated Clinton supporters are indeed racists? Maybe more important, with her out of the picture, if they're indeed racist, who will they vote for between Obama and McCain?  ns

I don't think Clinton's voters are racists.

Certainly some may be, but not all. First off, there is a historical animus between blacks and Hispanics within the Democrat party, and I do think that Hillary's Hispanic support has to do with this fact at least in part. Hillary's base are less educated, lower/middle voters. By and large, those types of people do not read the Huffington Post, the DailyKos, or watch MSNBC. They have a bond with the Clintons that dates back to Bill's presidency. Plus, they no doubt like the nanny-state proposals that Hillary spits out, and I think they would be less susceptible to Barack's high-brow "change/hope" stump speech. Maxine Waters, in her endorsement of Hillary stated, "my constituents don't need hope, they need help". "women and minorities hardest hit"

Noel - Would the Clintons sabatoge Obama in the General?

so that if Hillary loses she can run again in 2012? I was thinking that unless Obama makes her VP they would probably not want him to win. Especially since McCain is a liberal anyway.
I do think Obama will win the nomination and the Presidency unless something drastic happens.

Dee

Dee,

I think they would DEFINITELY sabotage him, because her only shot would be 2012. Of course, Dems don't cater well to candidates once they've lost. However, the Clintons won't care about that, and will do EVERYTHING to keep him out of the WH if he beats Hillary. ns

I never thought of that,

I never thought of that, but now that you mention it, I wouldn't put anything past the Clintons to hold on to power (or get it back).

I just got an email...sort of a joke about a nightmare that a guy has...long story short...Hillary gets nominated, takes Bill as VP. After elected, inaugurated, resigns, Bill becomes Prez (I know we discussed before whether this would be constitutional, but just imagine), has to replace the VP, and guess who he chooses?....and on...and on...follow this along in your mind...if it were possible, it would REALLY keep you up nights....

As the clerk said in You've Got Mail.....Quelle Nightmare.....

motherbelt,

Shudder-That is worse than the nightmare scenario I have been conjuring up if McCain somehow gets elected. :-O

Bubba, pick up your marbles and go home

Noel,

a month ago I would have agreed with you but I'm not so sure now. Billy boy crossed the line in South Carolina and high profile party insiders spoke out. I'm like you and believe the Clinton's will stop at nothing to gain power and control. But if Obama closes this deal it will be because a significant number of superdelegates switched over to his side. Any further "sabotaging" by the Billiary team could be suicidal.

Noel, MB , dbo, RD, - I really can't decide which scenario is

worse. Hillary or Obama as the nominee. The polls say that Hillary would defeat McCain and McCain would beat Hillary but Obama hasn't had anyone say anything about his record yet.

I'm starting to think that if Hillary wins, she will be the tougher candidate because of the Clinton machine and the fact that everyone already knows about her. With Obama it's different. People don't know his negatives yet.

Kerry was way ahead in the polls until the Republicans actually started campaigning because none of his negatives had been mentioned by the MSM.  He hadn't been tested.  The first test was during the General. The same thing could happen to Obama

Dee

Dee,

EXACTLY. Also, bear in mind that McCain was considered all but dead until quite recently. So, the "general" electorate haven't been thinking about him for months. Once the two nominees are decided, and folks know who they are, things will be a lot different.

Furthermore, I fervently believe the electorate will be MUCH MORE tolerant and understanding of attacks against Obama once he's the actual nominee. This is indeed politics, and a fight for the highest office in the land. As such, people who think this race will be genteel all because a black man is the Democrat nominee are fooling themselves.

There's a LOT left to this horse race. Frankly, it hasn't even begun! ns

I sure hope it plays out that way. I'll stay tuned to NB to

keep my spirits up.

Puzzled

I personally would be ashamed to take an award like this for talking as I had always thought a grammy was a creation of music..........I would stretch it if it was something like Poe's poetry as the cadence is marvelous..........but for these dolts nattering on in self promotion that is nothing one hands our awards for.

I thank Newsbusters for this as I now have another award on my list I will not ever bother to accept as they give these things away now like the Nobel to terrorists and ham sandwhiches.........that is no award any more.

I agree, LC... the idea of a Grammy for a"book on tape" is ridiculous. At least with music, the "art" was created for the medium. The book was written for the print medium. Transferring it to an audio format shouldn't garner anyone an award.
