Super Bowl Open Thread

Let's get it in writing folks: WHO WINS THE BIG ONE TODAY?

Will the Pats cover the 12 point spread?

Is anybody boycotting the game? Why?

Tale of the tape

I guess I will go with the Patriots, especially if they were able to tape the Giants' final walk-through at practice yesterday.

The Pats are like Hillary

Will do whatever it takes to win, even cheat a little. And the Pats fans I've seen lately seem to have a Clintonesque arrogance about them...the SB title is theirs and they don't need to win no game...give 'em the trophy already...

Arrogant? lol!

I haven't seen any "arrogance" around here, nor in my state of CT, where we have about a 50-50 split between the two teams.

On the other hand, for many months I HAVE seen multiple admissions of "hatred" and free usage of the word "hate" from the anti-Patriots here....as if their lives have been somehow negatively affected by a pretty terrific team.

Petty and silly stuff...    :^)

I agree

The Pats dont raise taxes, werent responsible for WW1 or WW2 but to hear some folks on here it seems that way.Maybe the Pats should all be sent to Gitmo and waterboarded.Or worse be force to eat MRE's.It is football get over it.Just enjoy the game.Go Pats.

Go Patriots!!!  To all the

Go Patriots!!!  To all the Patriot haters out there, you all sound like some of the nutty 9-11 Truthers running around this country.  LOL!!Screw diversity, celebrate competancy

I hate the Patriots with a

I hate the Patriots with a passion that can only be rivaled with what I feel for a Democrat. But with that said, that doesn't make them a bad team just because I dislike them. This will be a beatdown of epic proportions. Patriots 45 Giants 21.

They come from the land of Kennedy and Kerry. It seems undeniable that they cheated, when they really didn't have to.

I think Tom Brady is one of the best QB's ever and Rodney Harrison one of the dirtiest players ever and Bill Bellicheck has the personality of the Soup Nazi.

Pat's still win and I will not be watching.

I also hate the Patriots

I also hate the Patriots and would like nothing better than to see a Giants upset.

As far as Tom Brady being the best quarterback, most nfl quarterback can be great if they have an offensive line giving them lots of time in the pocket. Just my 2 cents.

→ Great Quarterbacks

As in Mark Rypien.

♣ a seal

Right on target

From a die hard Skins fan.  Rypien had all day and made great use of it.  And you are right as far as QB's go, give most any pro QB plenty of time to throw and make reads and they will succeed.  Brady is a great QB but man, he has all day to throw that ball.  I say, cue up tapes of Rypien, Aikman and Brady side by side where they had to act quick and/or were under alot of pressure from the defense and you will see lots of fumbles, picks, sacks, throw aways and concussions.

Still, it is a team game and for those teams and specifically coaches who have not figured out that protecting the QB is the main ingredient- have fun watching this years super bowl.  Of course protecting the QB is made a bit easier when you have the other teams signals and corresponding blitz packages on video tape.

By the way, why did Roger Goodell have those tapes destroyed?

Brady and the Pats don't care

They don't care if Brady is the best ever. Or if the Pats are the best ever. All they care about is the W. Get enough W's, throw enough touchdown passes, gain enough yards and the records will take care of themselves. Do they care if anybody hates them? Nope. They care about winning.

LOL!! You wouldn't happen

LOL!! You wouldn't happen to be a native Bostonian, would you???

why would you hate them

why would you hate them because of Kerry or Kennedy?

Kerry knows more about European football than about the NFL and Ted Kennedy is into long distance swimming and off road racing.

Do you think the Pats have done anything before or after week 1 that every other team has not done ???

Don't you know in your heart that Arlen Spector is the ultiamate poser and media whore - he is just laying a turd on the dinner table because he is taking money from Comcast and is the ultimate jerk.

Track

NBers,

For those interested, yesterday's track meet in Lincoln, Nebraska, was the third greatest day of my life. Watching your kid compete at the big conference college level is amazing. The kids sitting all around me must have thought I had just left a funeral given the tears streaking down my face. :-)

Unfortunately, the men's high jump ended up being one of the weakest events of the day. UNL foolishly scheduled a men's basketball game and a swim meet AT THE SAME TIME IN THE SAME FACILITY. As a result, the jumpers had to warm up OUTSIDE in the sub-freezing cold instead of inside where they normally do.

This made for sub-par heights from this elite group. In fact, only one person cleared 7 feet, even though ten entrants already had this season. VERY disappointing.

Brandon did 6-8.25, which is respectable, but under his PR, and not what he wanted to do with his Dad in town. As a red-shirt freshman, there WILL be better days.

Regardless, it was a marvelous day, especially as I watched the event with volleyball star Sarah Pavan, one of this year's NCAA top athletes. Her boyfriend is high jumper Dusty Jonas, and the two of us had a blast talking about our "heros" on the field. :-) ns

Kids

Congrats, Noel.  I'm sure it was a very proud moment.  I'm still watching cartoons with my offspring, but I'm sure she will make her dad proud in her college days.

Although it will probably be academically, due to the lack of athletic ability that exists between my wife and me.

Memories

NS: Congratulations to you and your son! You'll remember that day forever. One of my sons made the all-state football team in his senior year and another son was the state wrestling champion for his weight class for two years. I'll never forgot those games and matches. They make me smile to this very day. Good stuff.

Liberal's Basic Rule For Discourse: I don't care if you agree with my premises, but I demand that you agree with my conclusions.

NS

Good for you both.  I'd much rather watch your son's meet than the Super Bowl.

Enjoy your time in Lincoln....and say hi to my nephew.

Blonde

B,

Too late. Already in the airport -- FACING ANOTHER delay!

I HATE AIR TRAVEL!!!

Flying out here, my flight to Vegas was cancelled for unscheduled maintenance. They rerouted me through Chicago, getting me into Omaha 4 1/2 hours behind schedule!!! Time with my son forever lost!!!

Now, just as we're about to board, the flight is delayed because of weather in Vegas. As a result, I'll now be flying during the Super Bowl rather than home watching it.

Honestly, there's nothing fun about air travel anymore! :-( ns

Sorry N,

I feel your pain.  Just concentrate on the good stuff....nothing you can do at this point....you're a captive.

It'll probably be a crummy game anyway. (not really...but I'm trying to cheer you up).

Safe flight, N.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Noel,

Your son will NEVER forget that you were there - he may forget what he did, or even where he was (doubt that) but having Dad there will never be forgotten. And that comes from being the son and the dad.

He was a coach, not a good one, but he was there. My daughter raced wheelchairs, not all that well, but I was there - and all of it didn't matter, EXCEPT that WE were together, or at least very near. And just think, first year jitters lead to second year betters.

There is no sense in being stupid, if you can't prove it! - my dad V

Monday morning quaterbacking

Hi Jason.   With the close score at halftime I had the opposite feeling.  I didn't see any indications of the Pats solving the pressure on Brady.

For the past few weeks, I've been talking about the noticible pressure the Giants put on him in their first game, and how impressed I was that he maintained his cool.   Well, the Giants increased the pressure on him and, IMO, that put him off his usual cool and his usual accuracy....unless the ankle was worse than we knew.

Also, did you see the way

RJ, believe me, my half-time feeling was all hope and optmism, I had no good reason to believe it.  Also, did you see the way his arm got wrenched back during one of his first-half sacks?  I think that may have been the culprit in his frequent second-half passes to nobody.

What an anticlimactic game.

But yeah, in all honesty, have to give NY credit for seriously putting the heat on Brady.  I'd like to be able to say "The Giants didn't 'win', our defensive (well, and offensive) front lines were just off"; but they did play one hell of a game.  Which would have made a last-30-seconds drive downfield all the more awesome.

BT

I have lots of time to kill.

I lived in the Boston area

I lived in the Boston area for many years before moving to NJ (for family reasons, but I wish I'd have known bettter...)

I'm not a sports nut - I only watch pro football, and I have no memory for scores, players, etc. I enjoy seeing teams working together toward a common goal, overcoming challenges, adapting to situations, and maintaining their spirit and drive. Typically the day after the game, I can't tell you the final score, but I can tell you how it went, and if it was well-played.

During the late 1980's and the 1990's, I watched the Pats lose many playoffs in the last minute. They were always on the edge of winning, and then they'd blow it. Despite several good seasons, mostly I agonized season after season.

So now I am enjoying their winning, and am delighted in the way they don't allow superstar publicity for any one player. I like the way they think team. I like their discipline. I like the way Brady preps 20 or more hours for each game. He's not trying to be good - he works hard to be good. I like the way the Pats gather info about their opponents during the first 3 quarters, then apply it in the 4th for the win. To me, the Pats exemplify excellent qualities of thoughtfulness, dedication, focus, and patience that individuals and businesses can emulate.

Until the last game of this season, I wouldn't have cared if the Giants made the playoffs. But that last game against the Pats - I have new respect for the Giants. (Makes me a bit more able to tolerate the local adoration of the Giants...)

Although I still don't think the Giants will win, I think they'll give the Pats a really close game, maybe only 4 points.

As for the above-mentioned videotape situation, you KNOW that every team is doing that. I respect the Pats for not trying to dismiss it. I only fault them for not fighting the over-the-top penalties.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to an enjoyable game. Go Pats!

At times I can't control my

At times I can't control my natual desire not to conform. This is one of those times. I pick the Giants to win. For no other reason than I like swimming up stream. It could explain why I get so battered and bruised eheheehee:)

A shout-out to the surprising UCONN Huskies

They're unranked, but yesterday they beat #18 Pittsburgh for their fifth straight win.

And get this:  three of those wins were against ranked teams, including #7 Indiana (at Indiana) and #13 Marquette.  Nice run, guys.

Gee, ya think it's time to give them a ranking?

RJ... I saw the end of

RJ...

I saw the end of that...they were lucky and yes very talented to pull that off within the last two minutes...when I tuned in they were a point of two behind, then they tied blah blah blah...then they put on the show!

I thought of you and your Huskies...

Our Zag played in double over-time last night against the Broncos (Santa Clara)...it was some game to not look away from...it was great to the end...

Go Giants!

The Patriots could become

The Patriots could become the first team to ever have been found absolutely guilty of cheating, won every game during that season, and have that season celebrated though everyone is aware of the cheating. Normally cheating gets more attention. I don't understand why it doesn't in this case.

And if anyone wants to chime in and call this whining (please do so we can see your true colors..lol), I'll pre-empt by explaining that you will be at the same time revealing to us all your lack of principle in this situation.

Let responses begin!!!!!!..LOL

Oh yea, prediction, I almost forgot.....Patriots probably win by two TDs and a FG. I don't want that to happen, I just predict that it will. I will be more than glad to be wrong in that prediction.

hey greg

did we ever get a full scale investigation into all the teams?  Wonder why not?

True the Pats were caught, paid the price, moved on.  Time for others to move on also.

Supreme Court,  National Security,  Borders,  Fiscal Restraint, my litmus test for President.

Paid the price?

Paid the price? Their season was not nullified nor was the game in which they were caught outright cheating one they were forced to forfeit.

If I was caught cheating on a test in school, I got a fat zero on that particular test. I forfeited my grade. Other students weren't assumed to have cheated too, with a full investigation on them first before I was punished. Track star Marion Jones just recently had to forfeit her wins in the 2000 Olympic games because she was found guilty of cheating in her winning those medals. In the NFL's case, not even the game in which they were seen cheating had to be forfeited. That's very strange to me. Normally if you cheat during some contest or event, you forfeit your win when you're found to have cheated. If it was my team, I'd say this same thing. And yes, I understand that we don't know each other and you could think I'm full of crap on that, but that's the honest truth. Doesn't matter what team it is, or whether I'm a fan. If I can't say my team should forfeit at least the game in which they were found guilty of cheating, then my principles are just talk.

Greg a fine and loss of

Greg a fine and loss of first round draft choice was deemed appropriate by (not the Patriots) the league.  Done and Done.

Get over it, neither you nor i are privey to all the information in context that was used to determine the penalty.

I will say this, when i first heard the Pats were stealing signals i thought <Duh!, Don't they all do that?> which of course they do that's why they have 'signals', same thing in baseball.  The old -cap, chin, skin, hair, elbow, cap etc.

Supreme Court,  National Security,  Borders,  Fiscal Restraint, my litmus test for President.

We just simply don't have

We just simply don't have the same views on the principle of it. No biggie, I appreciate the discussion.

They cheated. Period. I

They cheated. Period. I don't know how they don't lose that game from their record.

NFL's call on that, either

NFL's call on that, either way. My opinion is same as yours.

Because the NFL knows the truth, they took the action they did.

I've read and heard sports announcers and writers say that it was known to be fairly common.

It's obvious that the NFL knew that anything more than the punishment they gave would be challenged and would have opened a can of worms they didn't want to open.

Nullify the Season?

Nullify the entire season because of an incident in one game? Please.

How many games did the San Francisco 49ers have to forfeit after they were caught cheating on the salary cap?

Please read my post. I

Please read my post. I made mention of nullification of season, yes, and you jumped on it, but I much moreso accented the Jets game in which they were found guilty of doing it, which you said nothing about. Perhaps you agree on that one game forfeiture?

As for the 49ers, I don't know or remember that one. If they did it, there should have been punishment. Maybe it was, but I don't know about the situation.

What Do The Rules Say?

If the rules said that they should have forfeited that one game, then they should have. Obviously the league didn't think that way.

As for the 49ers case, here's the story:

http://www.boulderpu...

excerpt:

"Three years after salary-cap violations by the 49ers were suspected, NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue announced the settlement. Policy will pay $400,000 and Clark $200,000. The 49ers agreed to pay $300,000 and surrender their fifth pick in the 2001 draft and third selection in 2002. The settlement, made with the agreement of the NFL Players Association, also calls for the player agents involved — Leigh Steinberg, Jeff Moorad and Gary Wichard — to contribute $350,000 to charities. But the players involved will get their money, and it won't count against the 49ers' salary cap, an apparent oversight in the settlement procedure. The league then decided to increase its power to punish future violations by allowing for suspensions of a year, fines of up to $3.5 million, and the loss of two No. 1 draft choices."

Arlen Specter

I am cross posting this from the open thread. I feel we need to clog this clown's mailbox. Hope you don't mind Noel.

Specter was on ESPN with Mike and Mike this morning saying that the American people had the right to know about the Pats tapes as why Mr. Goodell destroyed them. This is BS.  Goodell said he destroyed them so they couldn't fall into the hands of other teams. I believe Goodell when he says that if further action is needed he will take it.

Any way I fired this e-mail off to Specter but I doubt he reads.

BUTT OUT. You have no right to investigate the NFL. Get back to work on things that matter to America. The NFL can take care of itself. You wonder why Congress has such low ratings. Enough said!

I would like to ask each of you to sent Specter an e-mail that it is none of his business.  Just google his name and a contact form will be in his website

the special waiver that the NFL receives from Congress carries obligations, transparency, etc. the commish has admitted that the investigation about the taping did not go back to 2002 and we now know that the Pats cheated then, so lets clear the air and find out what happened when and who was involved. Matt Walsh's  interview with ESPN is quite revealing. the league has rules, which were broken, hence the fines, etc. the public deserves answers, the integrity of the league is at stake. this is far from done

Patriots

The '07 Giants are the '85 Pats. The '07 Patriots are the '85 Bears. Therefore, Patriots 46 - Giants 10. No contest. And why doesn't any other team get caught cheating if they are all doing it? Could it be that the Pats are the only team anyone cares about catching? Just wondering.

Giants by 24

I realize the networks, odds makers, referees, NFL and advertisers all have a stake in making this game close so viewers stay tuned........

But barring any odds maker referee penalties to stall drives, the Giants front line has the ability to plaster Brady to the turf. I do not believe the Irish owners of the Giants will allow the cheating Patriots to "just play".
I believe they will mug Randy Moss and Wes Welker. The running game will be shut down and Brady will go limping off for real and not fake walking boot casts.

The Giants have a smashing running game which will have the linebackers of the Pats running away by the 3rd quarter. Their wide receivers are healthy enough.......watch to see if the Pats corners get tagged for roughing Burris and company early........that is a signal how the game will go.

I pick though the Giants to win by 24 points in a route.

Of course, I picked Green Bay not knowing Bret Farve would thrown passes like a girl and that Peyton Manning would throw 2 interceptions in his end zone.

Sometimes the girls just do not play up to their ability.

After all what could make more money in the odds makers to have masses of dolts biting on the Pats to win and the Giants smash them.....so no the Pats will not cover the point spread.

........and no not boycotting anything but Ford, Chase etc..... I do not like though that idiot Roger Goodell planting trees to offset the Super Bowl.........that is just plain stupid!

I do have the 10th season of South Park on DVD; I think I'll watch that while I iron my clothes and do paperwork in preparation for my torment tomorrow.  I will tune in at halftime (any guess what time that will be?) to watch Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.  Friends say he play four songs and last night over seabreezes and supper we guessed that he would play these four songs: 1) American Girl  2) Free Fall'in  3)  Refugee  4) Won't Back Down.  Other guesses included the much hoped for 'Runn'in Down a Dream (too long); 'The Waiting'; 'Don't Come Round Here No More (too long)  and one none wanted but had to consider 'Don't Do Me Like That'.  Any other suggestions?
