What to Cover: Springtime in NYC or Snowstorms in the West?

A global warming crazed media are going to have a very interesting decision to make this week.

Should they report early spring conditions in the eastern part of the country, especially in New York City, or the massive snowstorms that will hit western states including Colorado, Utah, California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, and Nevada?

The former seems a metaphysical certitude, doesn't it?

Before you answer, here are some near-term predictions published by Bloomberg Monday guaranteed to give newsrooms across the fruited plain weather reporting nightmares:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Heavy snow will blanket parts of Utah and Colorado, and strong winds will hit the Southwest today as a series of West Coast storms that left hundreds of thousands without power moves on to the Rocky Mountains.

From the Great Lakes to the Atlantic coast, temperatures may reach as much as 30 degrees above normal through Jan. 9, according to AccuWeather, a private forecasting service. The higher temperatures may lead to flooding as snow melts. Unusually mild temperatures as high as 68 degrees Fahrenheit in Washington and 61 in New York were forecast for tomorrow, AccuWeather said.

In contrast, parts of the Rocky Mountains west of Denver may get as much as 12 inches (30.5 centimeters) of snow today, the National Weather Service said. Temperatures in Denver, where as much as 5 inches of snow is forecast, may fall to 5 degrees Fahrenheit (-15 degrees Celsius).

With that in mind, are we more likely to see media focus on the warm conditions akin to this report from New York's WCBSTV.com:

For the second straight year, Mother Nature is teasing New Yorkers with a pleasant surprise in January: springtime weather conditions.

Just when it seemed like winter's bite kicked into gear with wind chills in single digits last week, some unexpected mild air is moving into the region and will make for a fantastic start to the work week. By Tuesday, temperatures should hit at least 60 degrees for much of the tri-state region.

"It's not quite June in January, but it's good enough for me," said CBS 2 HD Meteorologist John Elliott. "Our highs are reaching temperatures that are more common in the middle of April."

Or, will they focus on what's going to happen this week out west as reported by AccuWeather Monday (emphasis added):

Winter-storm-related watches and warnings are in effect for the mountains across the Four Corners region with cold air expected to wrap into the entering storm. The higher elevations in northern Arizona and New Mexico will see the heaviest snow with the track the low.

[...]

Today into Tuesday morning, as much as a foot of snow could fall in the mountains of Arizona and New Mexico. High pressure will enter the Four Corners on Tuesday, ending the wintry mess.

With the approach of the next storm in the Northwest, places in the Cascades could receive another foot of snow into Tuesday as well. Colder air left over the region behind the last storm will allow for snow to mix in with rain in places that are often bypassed by snow, including Seattle and Portland.

Any guesses as to which area's weather will be given greater focus?

Of course, an unbiased media would pay equal attention to both...but will they?

Snow and Ice is killing people/spring weather isn't

I think the MSM will come down on the "dead side" of the Winter Snow storm...........without explaining how Winter really happens in a Global warming environment.

As Rush points out, "Global Warming" is now touted as "Climate Change" to get everyone over the Winter thing that is happening.

climate change

Yep, they will report both and blame both on "climate change".

The way they see it.

Evidence against APGW is actually evidence for it.

The media will focus the

The media will focus the weather on the northeast...no matter what. They will mention the conditions in the west, but I guarentee that warmer weather is the big story because it's happening in their backyard.

Do you realize how much it costs to run for office? More than any honest man could afford. -Montgomery Burns

Guaranteed they will only

Guaranteed they will only cover back east.  Excluding Kalyfornia,  if it is west of the Mississippi it doesn't exist; and if it does, who cares we are just 'necks' out in flyover country, red states.

And what is this crap I am hearing about Huckabee now speaking out in favor of the belief of AGW and the need for the president to do something about it?  Looks like the only one for me to consider now is Thompson.

End of Sierra's snowpack "melting forever" drama?

I was rather hoping to see a story on the snowpack in the Sierra mountians. Last year the news reports were suggesting that becasue of global warming, we may never see normal snowpack again - ever... never.

How's it looking now, from your vantage point?

For the record, according to the CA Department of Water Resources (just called), the average snowpack for the entire state at this moment is at 111% of normal - and more is on the way. (:~> gary

Update: Here, just found the link: CA Department of Water Resources

enjoy it while you can

Just a reminder that the storms that hit us out West, invariably make their way through the rest of the country and then slam the east coast. Like the last 4 storms in the past month.

So they better enjoy the nice weather while it lasts, it won't last long.

How the heck do they think they get an "average" if some of the daily temps are on the warm side? Geez!

And for the record, Colorado has always had spring-like days in Jan/Feb and can also have winter-like days in May and September. I've even seen snow in July at only 7200 feet.

January Thaw

"Warm" temps are normal here too. We call it the January thaw and it happens every year. Get's warm for a few days just to tease us.

Heck, we look forward to it. At least I know I do.

Exactly. "January Thaw" is called that, because, DUH

it's a common January event.

You're right, but it occurred 5 minutes earlier this year causing grave concern.

January thaw

A January thaw is common here in Ohio as well. Those of us who've been around long enough are not as freaked out about a 60 deg. day in January. We've seen it before. And we know that it doesn't mean winter is over. Far from it.

I think the January thaw is God's way of telling us to "hang in there" and reminding us to look forward to Spring.

Power to the people!

I figure the one they'll

I figure the one they'll cover the most is the one that drives the most revenue.  I'd put my money on how the East is experiencing abnormally warm temperatures which are another sign of human effects on global climate.  Further proof that 2008 will be one of the warmest years in history, blah blah blah.

What they won't report about is the predictions about 2007 being one of the warmest yet it turned out to be the coldest year of this century.

"Global" Warming?!!! ... GLOBAL?!!!

What kind of a colossal inbred jack_ss idiot do you have to be to say that there is "GLOBAL" warming?!

Tell that to Antarctica, Siberia, Norway, Finland, Canada, Iceland, and Alaska ... tell that to the 300 million people on earth that experience sub-zero temperatures every year.

There is one basic cause for short-term elevated temperatures in an area : A WARM FRONT ... warm front moves in, temperatures go up ... it's basic frickin' math ... 1 + 1 = 2.
