For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: The Senate blocked the House's energy bill yesterday. It would have raised taxes on the oil industry and required electric utilities to generate fifteen percent of their power from alternative energy sources.

December 9, 2007 - 00:16 ET by motherbeltIt's all very nice to say that 15% of energy has to come from alternative sources, but what sources? The environmentalists don't want nuclear, wind, or hydro...that leaves solar.
I was always afraid of it, but now I really believe we have to get busy on nuclear energy.

December 8, 2007 - 11:39 ET by Roger the ShrubberWell, the Democrat(ic)s definitely have a mandate... to get absolutely nothing accomplished. Perhaps in 2008, when they work 3-day work weeks, something might get done.
In the meantime, speaking of Liberalism, two Penn State students dressed up like Virginia Tech shooting victims for Halloween (see Drudge). Outrage! Penn State officials were quick to point out that freedom of speech, although in the Constitution, should not always be allowed? Meanwhile, VT students are all fired up, responding to those Penn State students" insensitivity with, you guessed it, death threats!

December 8, 2007 - 11:48 ET by Roger the ShrubberI almost forgot to congratulate the mighty Appalachian State Mountaineers for beating the Richmond Spiders last night, and earn a spot in the Div I-AA national championship game for the third year in a row. Their QB ran for over 300 yards. Incredible!
My Div II team, Cal (PA) Vulcans, are on at 11am est on ESPNU (which, unfortunately, I do not get) and face off against Valdosta St. in the Div II semis. Tonight, Grand Valley St. is on ESPN. You gotta love small college fooooootball!

Roger, while I'm amazed
December 8, 2007 - 12:10 ET by motherbeltRoger, while I'm amazed that VT students responding with death threats, especially after their own experience, I must correct something:
The Penn State Officials didn't say that freedom of speech, although in the Constitution, should not always be allowed,
they said that
Just because something is within the bounds of the Constitution and free speech, does not mean it should be undertaken. (emphasis added).
In other words, they are disagreeing with it, and condemning it. They said they were "appalled." Freedom of speech does allow someone to say that they find certain behavior objectionable...yes, one can even call it "insensitive." Students started a Facebook page for it. Others responded.
Other than the death threats, which were clearly out of bounds, (ane with which the VT students destroyed their own argument) it sounds to me like what was going on here was a whole lot of "freedom of speech." The rough-and-tumble, argumentative kind of freedom of speech the founders had in mind.

December 8, 2007 - 12:33 ET by Roger the ShrubberI took some liberties by using "allowed" because of the inevitable punishment these two insensitive hatemongers will receive. ANd they will most certainly be punished. I wonder if the ACLU would dare step in?

December 8, 2007 - 12:06 ET by iveseenitallOur Democratic majority is accomplishing no more than did the Republican majority. And the rancor is getting to a fever pitch. I, of course, blame the Dims. But I've also said for years that the RINOS in Washington allowed the bashing of the President from day one. In the last seven years I didn't see even one of them get on the floor and come to his defense with a meaningful speech. That emboldened the left. Now it's all gloves off, down and dirty. Of couse, it's the country which is suffering as these rich, disgusting do-nothings continue on their merry way. Who knows where this is headed. Maybe Hillary and Bill can solve the nation's problems from the Google island party this weekend.

The first minute or so is worth watching just for the cut aways to dork boy, but then I recommend skipping to 5:40 where Hillary insists its not her job as a Senator to do anything at all about the ARM mortgage "crisis", and in a shocking turn of fate blames President Bush.
Yeah, what's up with that

December 8, 2007 - 16:14 ET by saw the lightMy favorite part is when Hillary is asked where the $5 billion is going to come from. She says that is will come from where it comes from. The budget.
As if there are extra billions laying here and there just waiting to be used for so sainted of a cause.
Government over-regulation of a sector of the economy has not, is not, and will not work. Ever. But I guess it's too much for a senator and someone who has spent her entire life "fighting for others" to understand such a simple concept!

Heisman
December 8, 2007 - 14:32 ET by ricklailI didn't see our regular sports thread so I am bringing it up here. If I hear the clowns on ESPN and ESPN Radio mention Darren McFadden one more time about why he deserves the Heisman I think I am going to throw up. What has he done? He didn't lead the nation in rushing or scoring TDs. He had a problem hanging onto the ball. His team only won one big game, LSU. He is like the Hildabeast, no acheivements.
If they don't give it to Tim Tebow just because he is a sophomre then the award is no better than the Nobel prize that Owl Gore got.
As far as QB's go, don't mention Colt Brennan in the same breathe with Timmy. Colt's competion was like playing Divsion II teams week in and week out. After the Dawgs get through with them they can tuck their tails between their legs and hoof it back half way across the Pacific. They will be discovered for what they are-a team with a lot of style but no substance.

December 8, 2007 - 18:27 ET by ricklailI see the QB position changing in the NFL. It really began with Vick. Now look at Vince Young. It seems teams want a more mobile type QB-somebody that can pull it down and run when the recievers are covered. There will always be the Peyton Manning drop back type but there is a need for the running QB. Yes they probably will get hurt. Heck any QB could be hurt on any play. Look at what happened to Jason Campbell Thursday night. Would Tebow go number 1? I doubt it. The Sporting News is predicting Glenn Dorsey as the #1 pick in this upcoming draft. The first QB is Brohan (?) from Louisville going to Hotlanta about 5th. Tebow would not come out until 2008 draft.

The mall shooting was
December 8, 2007 - 14:32 ET by MikeBThe mall shooting was brought up on the NewsBusted thread with a rather obvious observation: that these shootings keep happening in "gun free zones". When the gun free zone stickers started appearing on doors to malls, banks, and other businesses, I thought to myself they should just put up stickers saying "victim rich environment". I keep hoping that a survivor, a group of survivors, and/or the families of the victims of these shooters file suits against the locations where these shootings occur on the grounds that the business' rules set up the victims to be killed. This is especially true for the second and subsequent locations. Do these businesses truly believe that the sticker on the door will prevent a criminal from bringing a firearm into the building? All these stickers do is proclaim "Victims Here!"
