Saturday Sports Open Thread

Okay, sports fans, there's a lot to discuss this final weekend of the College Football regular season. Before we get to some very exciting matchups, assuming the favorites win today, how are you feeling about the projected BCS games? Does one of the most exciting CFB seasons in history have the potential of ending with tremendously boring bowl games, or is all this new blood vying for the National Championship exciting you?

I mean, with absolutely no disrespect to Mizzou and WV, does a Tigers-Mountaineers matchup for the Title do it for you? (Personally, I love it, and find it to be the perfect ending to the perfect season!)

On to the games: V-Tech and Boston College. I'm very excited about this game, maybe mostly for the Hokies to be in such a big game at the end of the year given what this school has gone through. GO HOKIES!!!

Tennessee at LSU: Could this be a big letdown game for the Tigers after last week's stunning OT loss? Tough for me to be impartial, for the son of one of my trainers is a Vol! GO TENNESSEE!!!

I know people will think I'm crazy, but the Mountaineers better be ready to play today, because the Panthers, after a very disappointing 4-7 season, would love nothing more than knocking rival West Virginia out of the Title game.

Same for Mizzou. Sooners would love this upset big time.

Ditto the Bruins. This game is no cake-walk for USC.

Your Gators didn't do a good enough job on FSU last week. Instead of sending the elder Bowden into retirement he is about to sign a contract for as long as he wants to coach with a rasie that will pay him 2.5 mil a year and another 1 million when he does decide to hang it up.

I go along with you on VA Tech Noel. It has been a tough year in Blacksburg. I feel a small connection to there. Our pastor is a grad.

I have a real problem today. The Heels play Kentucky at 2. The ACC Championship game starts at 1. Which one to watch. I guess the old previous channed button will get a work out today.

Who wiil win the Pac 10 and go to the Rose Bowl? Is this a complicated mess?

Hopefully LSU can send Phat Phil to packing his bags. No other SEC team has done it yet.

45-12 wasn't good enough, Rick?

Hey, I can't help it if people in Tallahassee are stupid.  I can only speak for my Gators...2 words for you there...Ron Zook.

I'm with you on the SEC....I picked the Tigers way back when, and of course, now that we know who their opponent is, all the more reason to stick with it.

Better excercise that clicker finger.

BC?

not really, i went to URI but they don't really compete in football so i went with UT since my wife (now to be ex) went there.  I can't really claim to be a Celtics fan as i dropped NBA in the last ten years due to the lack of teams/ selfish stars.  Followed the Clippers for a while till they screwed SD in the night.  I kept my Pats and Yankees from my childhood and added the Chargers and Padres as i live in San Diego.

 I just want a Big 12 team

I just want a Big 12 team in the BCS championship game,  and of course win it.

Since they took away my beloved SWC,  I have to pull for the Big 12. I couldn't give a hoot what V Tech does,  they don't play anybody during the year anyway.

East coast football is, well,  not. They need to stick to basketball,  now,  they are good at that.

I've said it before,  there are two religions in Texas.  The 1st Baptist church,  and high school football! There's hardly a college team in the country that does not have at least one kid from Texas.

Like Casey Stengel said,  "you can lookitup"!

When I was at Fort Hood

When I was at Fort Hood they told me there were 2 sports in Texas. Football and waiting for football. I learned when I was there it was Daryl Royal football and Bob Wills music. You best not say anything bad about either one.

"Ahhh-Hawww!"

Bob Wills is STILL the King!

Noel, as a life-long

Noel, as a life-long Pittsburgher, my two favorite teams have always been Pitt and whoever is playing Penn State that week. That being said, I am rooting for WVU big-time, because who wants to see Ohio State in the championship game? I would love to see a Mizzou-Neers champ game! It's about time some other teams get the exposure and love!

Speaking of Mountaineers, my 2nd-favorite Neers, Appalachian State, face Eastern Washington today in the Div I-AA quarters.

My California (PA) Vulcans face the mighty Shepherd Rams in the Div II quarters, and the Mount Union Purple Raiders host the St. John Fisher About-to-get-their-butts-kicked in Division III.

You gotta love this time of year!

LETS GO SOONERS!!

You've got to be kidding.

You've got to be kidding. Missouri vs. West Virginia will be a great game to watch, if only because both teams have high-powered offenses. Ohio State vs. West Virginia will end up being a mismatch because Ohio State doesn't play well against any team with a decent spread offense, and West Virginia has probably the best spread offense in college football right now.

Sacto

Agree w/ most of your points except W.V. having the best spread offense in college ball right now.

Weather in KC

What is the weather going to be for the Sooners-Tigers game? I am hearing there is a major global warming fueled winter storm sweeping through the midwest. We need rain so bad here, I'd take some of  that right now.

Proud of my Heels. Two more road games and they can come back to the friendly Dean Dome.

I watched most of that game. The Heels are strong defensively this year - now we need to get Hanny more effective inside and get Lawson to stop making airhead mistakes.

Ellington has really changed since that Georgetown embarrassment and is becomming a really good perimeter weapon. IMO we're actually in better shape than we were last year.

What a crazy season. I'm really shocked right now, and have many more questions than answer. Like why should LSU jump ahead of V-Tech, Kansas, and Georgia to face Ohio? How does that make sense, or should they get the nod for winning the obviously best conference in the sport?

I hope I'm off Blonde's restriction, because I need a beer to figure this all out. How 'bout you? ns

K,

Well, and Washington is kicking Hawaii's butt right now!

What the heck is going on?

Imagine for a moment if each week this year you had taken the underdog against top 25 teams. Could have retired if you took the odds rather than the points, right?

Fun, fun season. Despite what purists are likely thinking, there's absolutely no reason not to be very excited about the upcoming bowl games. You agree? I mean, on any given day, anything can happen?

That's Entertainment!!! ns

Noel, college football is

Noel, college football is my last bastion of sports entertainment. The money and the "it's all about me" personalities have pretty well turned me off of most pro sports. College football is especially more exciting for the fact that on any given day, almost anything can happen. No series. No 5 or 7 game playoff. Just today; right now.

You're right; that's entertainment!!

Noel & Karma

That's all fine and dandy, but don't you want an undisputed #1 ??

Dana Perino and Newsbusters gals will look great in Shywear

(*NB guys, too)

In my opinion MrShy, I

In my opinion MrShy, I honestly don't. Not that I'm of the liberal view that we shouldn't have winners and losers, but with the limited play out of your conference, I don't think there's enough time in the current season to truely establish an "undistputed #1". This always leaves room for us "we got screwed" guys. That's alright with me. Keeps it interesting, and more often, aggravating. Adrenalin rush is fun.

Karma

K,

Well, I watch virtually no NBA anymore, and very little NFL for the reasons you mention. In short -- no heart, too many hot dogs.

Also, and unfortunately, I'm old enough to want to watch kids competing rather than adults. Kids play for the sport and the competition. Adults play for the money.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a pure capitalist. However, sports should be about the winning, not the paycheck. JMHO. ns

Noel !!!!

No NBA??? Come onnnn....

I mean, you've got the NY Knicks. Basketball in it's most pure and vintage form. Total team work.... no "I" in this team... players executing plays with precision... defense... a coach that understands the fundamentals and players that know their roles in the system... the game the way it's meant to be played.

Of course, I'm talking about the 1973 Knicks.

Dana Perino and Newsbusters gals will look great in Shywear

(*NB guys, too)

Uh, Noel, if I may, I must

Uh, Noel, if I may, I must take umbrage with your comment in regards to the NBA. If case you haven't noticed, the team with the MOST class in any proffesional sport has won three of the last five NBA titles and four out of nine. While I agree that there is too much "me, me, me" in proffesional sports, as a resident of San Antonio, I find it very refreshing to be able to call the Spurs my team. There is no I in the spurs organization, and believe me, it starts from the very top.

David Robinson took a sizable cut in pay to make sure the organization had money to bring in talent like Manu Ginobli and Tony Parker, and Tim Duncan. Tim did the same thing this year, making sure he retires a Spur. Almost the entire roster is getting underpaid, when compared to other players on other teams, and yet they prefer to stay with an organization that has a proven track record. Michael Finley signed for less money to come here, so not everybody in the NBA is just about the money. (Yes, in Finley's case, mark cuban footed most of that bill), but Michael wanted a championship.

I guess in the end, all I am saying is, sometimes, the good guys win. GO SPURS GO!!!!!

BTW Noel, I do love the sports threads. I think the editors and MRC have created, without a doubt, the best blog on the internet. Your sports threads definitely add to the fun of being a NB.

RESTLESS

Yes.

And then you have the other side of the spectrum.... Noel's Exhibit A of everything that is detestable and wrong in pro sports/the NBA:

Daaaaaaaa' Knicks.

But yes, I love the Spurs myself (and usually don't like multiple-winning, dynasty teams) but they are all classy, smart players, and you're right that the people at the top obviously look for real character and integrity and IQ, over hops and skillz. I think Robinson set the tone for that franchise, too.

The only blemish is Robert Horry's mean trip-up of Nash, as far as them all being upstanding... and claims of dirty play by that other guy, who's name eludes me.

But they all sacrifice, both on the court and off with their saleries, and will come off the bench -- any of them, on a given day -- if it's best for the team (see: Stephan Marbury and his reaction to just one benching :p)

Dana Perino and Newsbusters gals will look great in Shywear

(*NB guys, too)

Bruce Bowen would be the

Bruce Bowen would be the name that eludes you . I wouldn't call him dirty, but I guess when his "in your face" style of defense brings some scoring machine with a big ego down a few notches, accusations will fly.

As for Horry and Nash, I agree, that changed the series a little, but I wouldn't want Horry's reputation being tarnished for that one incident (and I HATED Horry as a Rocket, and especially a Laker).

Lastly, my condolences on your Knicks situation. ;>)

I don't have the hatred I used to for the Jazz. We have exacted our revenge on them tenfold. Dallas has moved up that ladder as far as I am concerned (not the least of which has to do withe mark cuban). We don't match up well with the Mavericks, but I believe in a seven game series, the Spurs are still the best TEAM in the NBA.

Agree on the Lakers though. It was nice to close down the Forum and to make Kobe cry in years past.

I didn't feel bad at all about the 109-59 Boston massacre ot the Knicks.  Couldn't have happened to a more deserving bunch.  [And I say that as one who grew up wishing someone would shove that cigar up Red Aurbach's a$$.]

Jer

More on the Spurs

Have some pity on me, I am surrounded by myopic, delusional Rockets fans (yes, their team has made some great strides, but they have a long ways to go yet).  The Jazz hatred shall long remain.  To wit, I was at a bar here in Houston watching the last game of the Conference Finals against them, and anytime the camera closed on on the Jazz bench, watching the Spurs show them how to play them game, bar patrons were treated to a maniacal Spurs fan screaming "ARE YOU GONNA CRY???" at the TV among other related comments (that Spurs fan being me, of course).

Dallas does not worry me at all. A GREAT regular season with MUCH potential to be sure, but Nowitzki is nowhere to be found after the middle of April.  Dallas goes as Nowitzki goes, and when he's not around, the whole thing falls apart.

You know, all the whining and crying about the shape of modern sports today, and how the Spurs are a breath of fresh air in that regard, reminds me a little of the whole "quality programming" argument in regards to television.  The Spurs have a team virtually devoid of egos...a group of character guys dedicated to winning.  Oh, and did I mention ZERO drama?  Yet, people within and without the media constantly moan and whine about how boring the Spurs are...in spite of them being what many people CLAIM to want.  (Much the same with the "quality programming" on TV argument..people cry for it, and when they get it, they don't watch.)

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

Unsane, is there any risk

Unsane, is there any risk attached to being a "maniacal Spurs fan" in a Houston bar?

Jer

Jer

I would think Unsane was fairly safe. For all of the words back and forth, San Antonio and Houston must get along. A great deal of Houstonians spend
