Antiwar Film ‘Lions for Lambs’ Could Lose $25 Million

You would think this the perfect formula for a blockbuster movie: megastars Tom Cruise, Robert Redford, and Meryl Streep teaming up to flood theaters with an antiwar film just in time for the holidays.

Well, think again, for it appears that this much-anticipated film, featuring the much-anticipated return of Tom Cruise to the big screen, is a bigger bomb than anything the enemy has been able to lob at us in Iraq since the surge began.

As deliciously reported by Reuters Friday evening (h/t NBer botg, emphasis added):

After three weeks in theaters, the antiwar drama directed by Robert Redford with an A-list cast featuring Redford, Cruise and Meryl Streep, has grossed a meager $14 million in North American ticket sales and about $26 million more overseas.

[...]

Entertainment trade paper Daily Variety said the film was unlikely to gross more than $60 million in theatrical revenues worldwide and reported some industry watchers projecting the movie could lose as much as $25 million.

The news is even worse for those involved, as the film has plummeted to thirteenth place in terms of ticket sales this week.

Ouch.

As a final aside, antiwar films have fared very poorly this year. And, once again, family-oriented features topped the charts in 2007, as they have for several years now: only one R-rated film is in the top ten for the year.

Think Hollywood will ever realize that the baby boom kids are now parents?

I know. Silly question. After all, the Democrats haven't figured that out yet either.

Defacing America

Too bad they are shelving the remainder. Hopefully the general public, even without news media, has realized how awful these people are.

I disagree. There are studies that show, for instance, that G and PG rated family films bring in more at the box office than R ones. But Hollywood continues to crank out more R rated ones loaded with profanity, sex and violence. They don't care. They make what they want to make...what they think is "artistic." Or gets their "message" across. The public be damned. We're just a bunch of hicks that don't know a "quality film" when we see it. They will absorb the loss and make it up another time with a big special-effects production later.

I agree with you, MB. Hollywood, like the music industry or any other major arts industr/community, is often crawling with huge egos... people with a deluded sense of knowing what's "great art" vs. "some sell-out crap" in their ever-so-cool eyes. So very often, something good that might also happen to be clean and have a positive message, gets dismissed... cuz it's not cool. They want to go down as directors, or actors, producers, that "pushed the envelope" of whatever. Otherwise, you're just not that good, and your art is not art.

I love it when pompous, egotistical, anti-American, Hollywood elitist's lose money. I love it even more that the American people haven't bought into the ridiculousness these people spew.

And you have to wonder

when they are going to get the message - Americans really don't want their anti-American crap!

Sounds to me like Katie C. who had big plans to "explain to us what she had just told us" because we simpletons are too dense to think for ourselves!!!!  Right!

The last time a major movie

The last time a major movie studio made a movie that had both major awards recognition and major public acceptance was The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King, essentially based on a novel series written by J. R. R. Tolkien, a very devout Catholic.

I think if the Hollywood Left keeps going at this pace the shareholders of the entertainment companies are going to start getting upset with all these movies losing money big time for the studio.

Good cripes!

Check the IMDb site for this guy ... Not ONE, but TWO flicks coming ... Guerrilla, in post-production and The Argentine, filming ...  that he plays Che in!!!  What?!? Is he "channeling" the maniac?

 http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001125/

This guy needs to see Andy Garcia's The Lost City ...

Movie was the Clinton book version

Hollywood like Simon and Shoooooooster make money off of real authors and scripts and then dump money into liberal Hillary books or this Redford type ilk that no one wants to watch.

Tom Cruise has not figured out yet he can not act and owes his money to being a wet panty siren for the girls and for Dustin Hoffman carrying him in Rainman.

Redford still thinks he is wet panty, but most of his chics are in nursing homes.........and Streep never was worth any appeal as a kind of homely sister you got stuck with.

Liberals are just miserable creatures and want everyone miserable. They make up stories like Saving Private Ryan which fouls America's persona because they hate America and then come up with Schindler's List and make it a farce by making that propaganda too.
Life is bad enough without crushing every glimmer of hope for people. Americans need heroes who are not murdering Nazi's, Jews need heroes who are not acting like sheep to a slaughter pit and Germans need heroes who are not converts, but were Lutherans being savaged as much as Jews were.

None of that ever comes out of Hollywood and people hate these propaganda pieces and detest these fossil actors.

I will not see it until later, but Nicholas Cage's new movie will be the cheery blockbuster America is waiting for, because Cage somehow knows how to involve himself with silver lining movies where the good guys win without all the filth.
I always cringed at him from his start in Valley Girls, but I now am a fan of his movies as they are all pretty good entertainment.

I urge people to be highly selective in movies they see to the books they purchase, because the more money one funnels into good projects the less Hollywood and S & S will be tempted to make liberal dogma a Cagney and Lacey hit no one ever watched.

If not, do what I have decided to do...........my list of viewing is leaving Hollywood behind as much as S & S..........I collect original Star Trek and will be adding Gilligan's Island, Hogan's Heroes and Gunsmoke..........and in reading I currently am with my beloved old book from 1950, thrown out of a Florida library and bought on Ebay which are the personal letters of George Armstrong Custer and his wonderful wife, Libby Bacon Custer.
It will shock people that George Custer is nothing like Hollywood and hateful liberals portray him.

So I go to original manuscripts and back to television when it was great like the great movies. One no longer needs the current corrupt system of media..........there is a lifetime of Jack Benny and that greatest of Patriots, Red Skelton just waiting with hours of wonderful entertainment.

I like Cage, but..., fyi, Gone in Sixty Seconds, The Weather Man, The Wicker Man...ugh.

Come on Balboa, Gone in 60

Come on Balboa,

Gone in 60 seconds was high art!!!

That car jumping the other cars stunt, simply magnificent.

I haven't seen Weather Man all the way through but it's a 3-star movie.

The Wicker Man?  Missed that one.  That may be his only bad movie recently.

Yeah..."high art." And

Yeah..."high art." And "Con Air" was deep.

Weather Man wasn't a bad movie per se, but it was depressing and quite pointless in the end I thought.

Wicker Man is the only "suspense" movie I've seen that I started laughing at.

Hey Balboa, Now You are Tredding on sensative ground

"I said, put down the teddy bear...."

(Man drops from plane on car below).

Seriously Bal, for a guy who'll defend the "4-star" oscar nominatd piece of absolute garbage "The Piano" which was entirely unwatchable (except that I was falling asleep on the recliner and didn't have the energy to get up and didn't have the remote), you totally miss out on ENTERTAINMENT!!!

Con Air was awesome!!

Another really bad Nic Cage movie was the one where he played his twin brother. Adaptation. Sadly I pay-per-viewed that so I felt obligated to watch the whole thing.  Horrible.

National Treasure, Con Air, Family Man, Face Off, It Could Happen,,, Guarding Tess, Honeymoon in Vegas, Red Rock West, Moonstruck, and Wild at Heart (but David Lynch is too sick, so I hesitate to recommend the movie).

OF Course the # 1 Nic Cage Movie is Raising Arizona.

exLib

Don't get me wrong. Con Air was VERY entertaining. Just not deep. I think Scary Movie 3 is hilarious.

Cage has made more good movies than bad, absolutely. Red Rock West is a hidden classic. Matchstick Men? GREAT.

And I never saw The Piano. Just never had the urge.

bal -

"Wicker Man" ...

That's nearly two hours of my life I'll never get back.

BTW, guys ... line in Conair was, "I said put down the BUNNY"

Was a bunny, not a teddy bear ... You're confusing the movie with the Brit teacher in the Sudan ...

drillanwr

Did you laugh out loud like I did when Cage put on the bear costume? Gawd that was ridiculous.

bal

I am not a Nicolas Cage fan. He just over-acts in everything. He'll/you'll call it method-acting, or whatever, I call it Cage being Cage in a film, so I can't focus on the film.

Just wanted to answer that question you posed to me, if I like Cage or not (no, you never asked me this? oops...)

Actually, it was all down the crap-hole for me when he squashed the bee on the bar and the hefty babes gave him the evil-eye.  Then, you saw how the only men on the gawd-forsaken island utopia were delegated to overly-obvious "worker bee" status ... And STILL he couldn't get a friggin' clue as to what was going on.

Really reminded me of one of those very poorly done, on the cheap, horror flicks from the 1960s.

Lame, lame, lame script.

I've seen porn with better plot ... Did I say that??!!

Just watched Adaptation.

Just watched Adaptation. Great flick.

And the Weather Man was exceptionally good. And I HATE artsy fartsy flicks normally.

Check out my exclusive edit of BBC News America's interview with Mrs Clinton: It's news to me!

Agree with you on

Agree with you on adaptation, but The Weather Man...not my cup of tea.

The Wicker Man

The original, which starred Edward Woodward of TV's "The Equalizer" was the cinematic equivalent of being beaten with a sock full of nickels. Cage's remake is coma-inducing. Save yourself two hours.

Is it possible that the

Is it possible that the pusillanimous left will cause producers to release films that are upbeat and fair to America. Will those arrogant rich, liberal, secular celebrities lose their celebrity. I can tell you this, I have never attended a Jane Fonda movie and I am still upset that she was not tried for treason. I never (almost) go to a movie with Sean Penn, Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Streisand, and others. I do not need them to define America for me. I watch Gary Sinise, a good actor , a great patriot. I change channels when people like Ed Asner or Mike Farrell come on. I have come to the opinion that Richard Gere is 32 ounces short of a quart.

I am tired of a**h***s who have never fought for this country making loads of money in war films , then using that money to insult our govenment and our troops.

Gee maybe they will start making movies like, Cool Hand Luke, Heat of the Night, To Kill a Mockingbird, again.

Naaaah!!!!!

Smart move on your part --

Smart move on your part -- my wife and I likewise abstain from patronizing radical, thinly guised liberal propaganda, both the actors and their movies.  I can add to your list blacklisted actors about a hundred others.

Loved Heat of the Night, BTW....

Shhhhhh! Don't say anything more....

The money being lost in these bombs would otherwise have been going to Hillary. Heck, I want them to keep making more. Given a choice between a few bad movies (which means Hollywood liberals lose money) versus more money for Hillary (where everyone would lose through taxes), let them make more of these bombs.

We got a good thing going here, folks. Don't blow it.

As Nelson would say....

As Nelson would say....  "Hah ha!"

Antiwar films

Today, actors could care less about the success or failure of their films because they get their money up front. Cruise will probably get his customary $20 million for the dog.

As for Redford, his sex/propaganda channel, Sundance, probably isn’t fairing much better.

But, you’ve got to hand it to them, they keep finding suckers, like Mark Cuban, to finance their left-wing propaganda.

If you understand the liberal mind you should know that they will never stop. The now 40 congressional resolutions to stop the Iraq war is a case in point. They are like the Eveready Bunny. They keep coming and coming and………

"Sex/propaganda

"Sex/propaganda channel"?

Have you ever watched it?

Hey Tom ur a Bomb

Straight from Hollyweird where every "ACTOR" is an expert on world affairs and politics. Tom Cruise leads the pack when it comes to extremly high levels of stupidity, he is nothing more than a typical Hollyweird elitist. I and many other people would rather watch paint dry than to endure any movie made by the likes of Tom Cruise,George Clooney,Barba Strisand,Sean Penn,John Travolta, or any other Left wing liberal Scientolgy nut job...Hey Tom I knew you would drop the bomb.....

Lions (then) Lambs, exactly...

Redford MIGHT have a chance

Redford MIGHT have a chance at making some bucks in a re-release with a new title ... "Silence of the Lambs 2 : Box Office Slaughter" ... and NOT show any trailers on TV.  People might think it's a new Wayans Brothers farce and flock to it ... the first showing, at least.  Could make back the money that was spent on it.

Thoughts While The Credits Roll...

I watched your television appearance.
I saw the graying hair, the paunch and drooping jowls.
You, the former unwashed and unshorn,
Once clad in your tie-dyed uniform, a soldier
In a deluded army and self-proclaimed hero of the Mad Decade,
Regimented, following your hallucinating leaders;
You, who gleefully burned the banner
Under which we died daily by the score.
You, who spat upon young warriors guilty of nothing
Save answering when their country called.
You, who descecrated our monuments with your urine,
And the memories of our dead friends with your venomous words.
Now you speak nostalgically and fondly
Of those "innocent" times, and you say
"We all did it...we are all a product of the sixties."
I beg your pardon...we did not "all" do it,
Whatever "it" is.
While drugs were cauterizing the neurons in your brain,
We were trying desperately to stay alive...
And thousands didn't.
While you were copulating like filthy animals in the muddy fields
Of Woodstock, and mindlessly gyrating
To a beat heard only in your feverish minds,
Your brothers were dying, faces in mud created by their blood;
Dying for you, to preserve and defend
Your right to burn your draft card
And wipe your sandals on our Flag.
As evil flourished you danced and sang and smoked
And screwed, and vomited on your girl friend's grimy feet.
And you screamed at us...
We who simply wanted to walk past you and go home,
Having just left clamorous fields of fruitless battle
In a God-forsaken land.
Your spittle washed out of my uniform,
But the stain remains upon my soul.
Your once-leering face is now composed
As you talk of grandkids, stock options, and 401Ks.
But I can still hear your shouts of "Baby killer!"
Ringing in my ears in those silent moments just before sleep.
No, I am not like you; we are not the same.
After all these years...you still digust me.
