NYT Headline: ‘As Democrats See Security Gains in Iraq, Tone Shifts’

Would you have ever imagined the New York Times, less than a year before the presidential elections, not only admitting that things are getting better in Iraq, but also suggesting Democrats – including those campaigning for president – were wrong about the surge?

On the front page of its popular Sunday edition, no less?

Well, there it was this morning, in big, bold letters: “As Democrats See Security Gains in Iraq, Tone Shifts.”

Hold on to your seats, for that was the first shock. Just look at how the piece began, especially the first five words (emphasis added throughout):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

As violence declines in Baghdad, the leading Democratic presidential candidates are undertaking a new and challenging balancing act on Iraq: acknowledging that success, trying to shift the focus to the lack of political progress there, and highlighting more domestic concerns like health care and the economy.

Advisers to Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama say that the candidates have watched security conditions improve after the troop escalation in Iraq and concluded that it would be folly not to acknowledge those gains.

Coincidentally, and somewhat telling, such appears to be the same conclusion the Times has made recently. Interesting that the “newspaper of record” in this nation and leading Democrats are changing their tune at almost exactly the same time, almost like they’re tied at the hip. But there’s more:

But the changing situation suggests for the first time that the politics of the war could shift in the general election next year, particularly if the gains continue. While the Democratic candidates are continuing to assail the war — a popular position with many of the party’s primary voters — they run the risk that Republicans will use those critiques to attack the party’s nominee in the election as defeatist and lacking faith in the American military.

Amazing. But what wait:

If security continues to improve, President Bush could become less of a drag on his party, too, and Republicans may have an easier time zeroing in on other issues, such as how the Democrats have proposed raising taxes in difficult economic times.

Shocking, yes? And quite in line with what folks like conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, and former White House adviser Karl Rove, have been emphatically saying for months: this election will not be about Iraq, but, instead, about the future of this nation.

If such ends up being the case, this can’t possibly be good news for Democrats -- or media members -- that have bet the ranch on the war failing miserably, and troops returning in shame:

Lately, as the killing in Baghdad and other areas has declined, the Democratic candidates have been dwelling less on the results of the troop escalation than on the lack of new government accords in Iraq — a tonal shift from last summer and fall when American military commanders were preparing to testify before Congress asking for more time to allow the surge to show results.

This is a delicate matter. By saying the effects of the troop escalation have not led to a healthier political environment, the candidates are tacitly acknowledging that the additional troops have, in fact, made a difference on the ground — a viewpoint many Democratic voters might not embrace.

Indeed. This is especially true for the MoveOn.org/Michael Moore/Netroots ultra-leftwing segment of the Democrat Party the presidential candidates have spent a lot of time courting, and desperately need to win next November.

If the discussion in the next eleven months shifts as suggested, this can’t possibly be good news for the anti-war left:

While the war remains a top issue for many Democratic voters, the candidates are also turning to pocketbook concerns with new intensity as the nominating contests approach in January. Mrs. Clinton devoted a week to her energy plans recently, and spent Monday and Tuesday talking about the economy. Mr. Obama, meanwhile, still draws strong applause from audiences when he criticizes Congress for authorizing the war and Mr. Bush for waging it, but he is increasingly highlighting other concerns.

“We’ve never seen gas above $3 in November,” Mr. Obama told a crowd on a recent evening in Allison, Iowa. “People are working harder for less. Folks are maxing out on their credit cards, trying to stay afloat. People are struggling. And it doesn’t seem like Washington is listening.”

Clearly, as the campaign moves into the primaries, the Democrat candidates are changing their tune, but so are the media who are finally recognizing the dramatic improvement in Iraq.

Better late than never, guys. Welcome to the party.

Right, the "war" will have ended and people will turn to the biggest issue --illegal aliens in our county. But the Republicans better not let the electorate forget what the Dims have done and how they are the party of Anti-God, Anti-Family, Anti-Country.

GoHunter08

Right,Obama

Right, Obama! People are struggling. I can't find a place to park at the mall or a table at the local restaurant. Something about what you say doesn't jive, man.

NEVER, NEVER trust a "liberal"

People are struggling.

I know that here in Phoenix AZ 97% of the people are struggling the commute to WORK every day..., yeah and struggling to get a a seat at the restaurants in less than 45 minutes! T'ings is tough all over!

CarlosC

do you really think the time to get a restaurant table accurately reflects the economy? Why not check the home foreclosure rates for another view? I'm sure all those marginally working poor are waiting outside restaurants for tables? No healthcare, no house, but going out to eat!!!

Yes Professor

The time it takes to get a table at a restaurant has everything to do with prosperity.  I came back from the Ukraine about a month ago.  Every restaurant we ate in for 10 days contained no more than 8 to 10 people.  (except for McDonald's, which was packed)  Why?  Because the real poor living in the Ukraine don't have discretionary income to eat at restaurants.  They watch every penny and many of them grow their own food.

Things have been so well for so long in the USA that we don't even know what poverty is anymore.  (Although I remember eating canned tomatoes that my mother canned when I was a kid, back in the Jimmy Carter years.)

Yes Professor

I can only say that 97% of the people in the Phoenix area have more money than time (to cook)..., last Bureau of Labor stats put that figure at 95% nationally.

BTW I remember the Jimminy Carter years too, fireside sweater (aka Mr. Rogers) chats while we were rooting around for gasoline.

Also high unemployment

During Carter days interest rates were 3 to 4 times what it is today. But their was Billy beer.I prefer lower interest rates.

I am convinced you are a

I am convinced you are a functional moron. Yes there are forclosures, but mainly because folks spent way past their budget on their home. Everone would LOVE to have a 5000 sq ft home, but many budgets only allow for the 2000 sq ft home. The aftermath of creative finance is just coming home to roost!

And yes, the malls are full. The restaurants are full. And don't forget, many of those who do not have health care, are young folks, who are healthy, and would rather spend their loose change on a flat screen TV, or on payments on a new car.

Are some people stuggling, of course. But, by and large, things are just fine. And there is plenty of help out there for folks who are struggling. All they have to do is ask.

Gary

. But, by and large, things are just fine.

9 trillion dollar national debt

Record home forclosures

Dollar lowest in modern history

Oil close to 100 dollars a barrell

Iran is very close to developing a nuke

Are all these setbacks George Bush's fault? Of course not?, but things are not just fine,

"And there is plenty of help out there for folks who are struggling. All they have to do is ask."

Who should they ask Gary? You?

Almost all that you list

Almost all that you list here happened while the democrats have run congress.  Maybe they should spend less time on meaningless resolutions?

They have another whole year to run congress before the next election.  Want to bet how much they get done?

You are right about that

You are right about that MidAmerica!

On Iran, the dims are falling all over themselve to declare "nyet" on attacking Iran should the time come. We CAN NOT let these evil people take the reigns of our country. If they do, we may cease to be a Nation!

Gary PJ

We should already be in there taking names. This administration has been so hamstrung by the nutroot Congress and MSM. I really thought by the end of this year, especially w/ Iraq shaping up over the course of '07, that we'd be underway by now.

Currency fetish, other issues

Well, well, well, if it isn't our man with the currency fetish.

If you want a stronger dollar SO BADLY:

1) Save 20% of your income in a savings account, every time you get paid.  Of course, a few million around you will ALSO have to do the same.

2) Demand the government pay down the debt (I could care less how it got there!).

But I fail to see how the state of the dollar is the end of the world. Besides, I wouldn't be surprised in the near future we begin to see stories on The National about how it is hurting various Canadian provinces, because enough people are heading south to buy goods/services to effect the tax revenues of the provinces (and enriching the coffers of a few northern states).

Record home foreclosures - Oh, how I WEEP.  Maybe people should NOT have made stupid decisions of their own freewill.  Conversely, maybe the banks should have done better in evaluating credit risks.  None of that is MY problem, nor should it be.  I like this personal responsibility thing that Leftists are highly allergic to.

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

a few inconvenient facts

you forgot to tell us how strong the dollar is these days. Yes, as long as people can get credit, everything appears well. So, why don't we open the spigots for universal healthcare, top quality education, and fantastic infrastructure if our economy is so strong? Our economy is smoke and mirrors, built on first, the stock market bubble, next, the housing bubble. If you borrow 4 trillion dollars and spend it, the economy looks good,. Using your reasoning, go out and run up all your credit cards and buy anything you want. At some point, you need to pay it back. The US is bankrupt except that the rest of the world keeps giving us credit. If they stop giving a deadebeat money, the game collapses.

U.S. Budget

Here's the 2007 U.S. Budget:

  • $586.1 billion (+7.0%) - Social Security
  • $548.8 billion (+9.0%) - Defense[2]
  • $394.5 billion (+12.4%) - Medicare
  • $367.0 billion (+2.0%) - Unemployment and welfare
  • $276.4 billion (+2.9%) - Medicaid and other health related
  • $243.7 billion (+13.4%) - Interest on debt
  • $89.9 billion (+1.3%) - Education and training
  • $76.9 billion (+8.1%) - Transportation
  • $72.6 billion (+5.8%) - Veterans' benefits
  • $43.5 billion (+9.2%) - Administration of justice
  • $33.1 billion (+5.7%) - Natural resources and environment
  • $32.5 billion (+15.4%) - Foreign affairs
  • $27.0 billion (+3.7%) - Agriculture
  • $26.8 billion (+28.7%) - Community and regional development
  • $25.0 billion (+4.0%) - Science and technology
  • $23.5 billion (+0.0%) - Energy
  • $20.1 billion (+11.4%) - General government
  • Look at the >$600 billion spent on Welfare and Medicaid. Those are government give-away programs, a total drain on the economy. The $586 billion Social Security spending is not enitirely on social security. It includes a number of other, hidden welfare costs -- State Children Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), among others. Again, a drain on the economy.

And now you want to add universal health insurance? Get real. You don't fix things by adding costs. You fix things by saying NO, and it's time we starting yelling "NO MORE".

    Balanced Budget Amendment

I noticed our shrieking Socialist, Профессор Правда, wants to add lots and lots of government programs on top of our already bloated government...but says nothing about, say, a Balanced Budget Amendment, which could go a long way to saving $243.7 billion a year.  Wonder why that is???

    Federal Budgets

I have worked over 10 years in civil service, and this also applies in every private sector job I have ever had. I have had to take a urine test in order to be allowed to work to pay my taxes into these programs. It makes sense then that the recipients of these programs must also pass a urine test in order to be qualified to receive ANY form of governmental assistance.

I could envision a HUGE reduction in the below budgetary numbers if this were true.

  • $394.5 billion (+12.4%) - Medicare
  • $367.0 billion (+2.0%) - Unemployment and welfare
  • $276.4 billion (+2.9%) - Medicaid and other health related
  • $89.9 billion (+1.3%) - Education and training

    One thing you forget about

One thing you forget about the weak dollar, our trade deficit has been cut in half, because our products are suddenly affordable overseas.

    http://newsbusters.o...

Not a bad thing for folks whose companies do business globally.

    gary

Yes a weak dollar is good for trade and tourism, but the bad outweights the good. The dollar did not just go down a little bit in the past few yrs......it has taken a nosedive.

The power of the dollar has a lot to do with the price of oil, with the falling dollar, the price of oil has skyrocketed.

Which means more expensive groceries, gasoline, airline prices etc.

    Tell me Shawn,

Exactly how this has aversely affected your family?

Are you not going to Sunday School?  Or not eating ground round on Saturdays?  What is it, Shawn?

Personally, I am enjoying American music, without having it pirated....but hey...that's just me.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

    Good evening Blonde

I believe in God, but I also believe in watching football on Sunday, so I do not go to Sunday School.:-)

I spend about $150 more a month now than I used to and groceries are a quite a bit more than they used to cost, but it has not affected me as bad as many Americans. The ones that bought way out in suburbs that have long commutes, the gas bills must be very hard to pay. Even my 4 cylinder Honda Accord cost 55 bucks to fill up. I get around 300 miles per tank. If someone commutes 100 miles round trip a day on a Honda, that is $110 minimum per week. I can probably afford that, but a person that is on on more limited means, it must be very hard on their daily life.

My point is your and I can afford a increase in groceries and gas prices, but many Americans cannot.

Personally, I am enjoying American music, without having it pirated....but hey...that's just me.

    ?????????????????

    FREEWILL

My point is your and I can afford a increase in groceries and gas prices, but many Americans cannot. What, do the words "personal responsibility" and "freewill" not compute?

Just out of sheer greed, when I leave work in my V-6 Dodge Ram (that countless Leftists whine I don't need, I swing by the EVIL Wal-Mart that is open 24/7 for my groceries.  By finding new and novel ways to combine my trips, I (lo and behold!) spend LESS on gasoline!!! WOW!  That was SO difficult!

I am not the smartest person out there...why is it that I figured this out and no one else did?  (Yet another reason why I don't bother worrying so much about my neighbors like you do.)

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

    Unsane

I do not think you are greedy for driving a Dodge Ram, You can drive a full size Hummer and It would not bother me.

    Clarification

...and this is why I said "countless Leftists", not "countless Leftists to include Shawn228".

    :-)

But let's face it, there are those, including Leftist posters on NB, who think that my driving around a V-6 Dodge Ram is unneeded; they would much rather force me into a Prius or some such car.  (Never mind that I both WANT it and can afford it.)

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

    Shawn

I sincerely thank you for your honest reply.

Yes, it costs us all alot more to live each month...when the cost of gasoline goes up.  We each cover it in our own individual ways.

Tell me, have you cut back on the meals you & your family eat?   I haven't.

But do tell, should we even it out amongst all Americans...you know...the "pain"?

Just because it doesn't affect me personally...should I be made to "pay" for those it does affect?

    Do tell.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

    blonde

I have not cut back on my meals, but I have cut down on how often I eat out and I sometimes car pool with better half to save a about 200 bucks per month.

I do not believe that I said, we should all share the pain, I stated that the falling dollar and high gas prices have adverse effect on many other things.

    Shawn

    Shawn,

Do you think a 30 percent decline in the value of the dollar the past six years is exclusively responsible for a 400 percent increase in the price of oil? Or, do you believe there are other factors to the current explosion in energy commodities? ns

    Noel

Absoloutly not, There is higher demand for oil from countries like India and China which is the main reason, and part of it has to do with how unstable things are in the middle east. The faint sound of drumbeats for "war with Iran" is not helping either.

    More on the dollar

The bad does not necessarily outweigh the good. (For one thing, I thought Leftists all wanted oil to be as expensive as possible!

Oh, I get it!  I just remembered...Leftists don't wan oil expensive due to the market...they want it expensive due to TAXATION.  Never mind.)

Another effect I can see happening is more outsourcing from Europe to the United States, because our labor costs will be that much lower than it already is.

The dollar is STILL the ticket to the world's largest market, in spite of everything.  (What's that? The euro covers a larger population?  Oh, wait...one in decline, and one so hobbled by the demands of The Nanny State, they can't have as large a market as the United States does!)

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

    Shawn

    Shawn,

The dollar has taken a nosedive? The Dollar Index is currently at about 76. In April 1995, it was at 80. So, it's five percent lower than then. Think that's a nosedive?

That said, though there is an inverse relationship between oil and the dollar, there is a direct relationship between the dollar and interest rates. As interest rates during most of this decade have been MUCH lower than during the previous one, it makes sense that our dollar is weaker than then.

This is especially true given the creation of the euro and the ECB back in 1999. How much do you think the elimination of all currencies in Europe save the pound, and all competing central banks, has impacted currency valuations?

This is particularly important as the ECB has been extremely tight with monetary policy since its inception. Throughout much of this decade, ECB rates have been higher than our federal funds. How do you think that impacts our dollar?

In the end, because everything is Bush's fault, idiots in the press and in the blogosphere -- finger not pointing at you -- have blamed the entire dollar situation on guess who. However, this is a much more complicated equation than that. In fact, I point my finger much more at Jean Claude Trichet, the ECB president. ns

    Noel

    Noel,

I will not even try to argue with you about economics but the power of the US dollar is at record lows vs the loonie and Euro.

I was only not even in kindergarden in 76 so I do not know how it was back then, but instead of going back 31 yrs and going back the past 5 yrs, I would say the Greenback has nosedived .

I don't blame Bush for what is happenning, I just do not see dollar that has lost so much of its power as a positive thing

    Shawn

    Shawn,

I think you misunderstood me. Let me try again. In 1995, the Dollar Index reached a low of 80. Today, twelve years later, it is worth 76. So, it's only declined five percent in twelve years. Not a nosedive.

As for dollar power, would you prefer to be in the position of EU countries which have a powerful euro? As a result, their products are all so expensive that nobody outside of EU wants to buy them. Think that's good?

In the end, from our standpoint, the only negatives about a weak dollar is indeed higher oil prices and very expensive tourism abroad. However, in a global economy, the benefits are enormous, as our multinational companies are exporting like crazy. This has also likely increased foreign employment in the states while reducing outsourcing abroad.

Americans need to get over this belief that a strong dollar is desirable, for in today's economy, weaker is definitely better. ns

    Noel

Oops sorry.....I did read it wrong. I thought you mean 1976..my bad:(

I admit I do not really know much about the dollar index, so I cannot debate you about that, but I know about 5 yrs ago I got a $1.50 Canadian for each American Dollar now 5 yrs later that same dollar gets me about .96 cents per Canadian Dollar. Losing over 50 cents per dollar sounds kind of like a nosedive.

    Noel & Shawn

You dudes are like all knowledgeable of economics, and stuff.

    I might be the one "right-winged" economics 101-challenged NB'er.

"MY end justifies THAT mean." - Shakespeare (not really)

    Currency

Noel - It should also be noted that Germany's economy is just now recently getting out of the doldrums, and is once again the world's largest exporter. I don't think that too many in Berlin are happy about the euro at this time. Nor are many in Italy, as they are getting hammered by the euro's strength, as much of their manufacturing base leaves for Eastern Europe (outside the Euro zone) or to China.

I can also imagine how the coffers of provinces such as Quebec, Ontario, and others will be effected adversely as Canadians head south to buy their goods where the sales taxes are lower and where the loonie can buy more.

On a personal level, though I would LOVE a strong dollar for the sake of traveling, I acknowledge the multiple effects of stronger/weaker currency, and advantages and disadvantages, as you clearly do.

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

    Uns

    Uns,

Actually, Germany now is exploding. Very, very strong.

You know what's amazing? Right now, there are more countries in the world whose economies are expanding than ever in history. It's really extraordinary. And, in this environment, the countries with softer currencies will benefit from the global demand.

If we could just get China to float the yuan, we'd be set! ns

    Noel

I was in Germany this past summer, in the south (Bavaria) and from a first-hand account, I would agree that it indeed appears very strong.

    DM to $

Back in 1999, when I hit Germany on the occasion of der Sonnenfinsternis, I was paying right around 2 DM per $1.  But, when I was living there between 20-25 years ago, I remember when for a while it was 3-3.45 DM per $1!

I saw it over 3 in 80s but in late 70s it was hard to get 1 for 1 from cabbie.

To hell with the Nanny State!!!

top quality education, Awesome! Hey guys! A teacher who favors voucher programs, and actually spending LESS on education!!!  AND, one who no doubt favors relying less on education majors and more on actual adademic subject majors, part-time teachers, and removing of federal money from the system!  (I could go on and on, but...)

As for your whine to have the government steal from me to pay for your doctor...I suggest my fellow NBers duck, and I apologize in advance for my predictability and lengthiness.  But as long as people keep whining for a Government Nanny at our expense...I have to keep this holstered.

Universal health care violates a very simple principle: "There is no such thing as a free lunch."  It will merely delude people into thinking there is one.  To illustrate: why are we all striving to drive less right about now?  Because the price of gasoline is rather high right now.  If the government subsidized the price so that it always cost, say, 25 cents a gallon, would you be so keen on restricting your driving?  No, because there would be no incentive to.  But in the meantime, the cost to the government of the subsidy would continually shoot through the roof, causing them to spend more and more money to keep the price at 25 cents.

The same thing will happen when you remove the price mechanism from health care, which universal health care plans seek to do.  Right now people don't visit the doctor nearly as often for things they can easily treat at home, because who wants to spend the money on something they can easily take care of themselves?  Once the price mechanism is removed, because health care is "free" at that point, people will hit the emergency room for paper cuts.  This is human nature, and indeed happened (and is happening) in nations with "universal health coverage".

The idea of universal health care is indeed a good idea - on paper only.  In practice it is a raging disaster that governments are loathe to get rid of because the electorate will scream at the proposal to re-introduce economic realities (i.e., prices) to the system.  (And if you think the debt is bad now, just wait until the government nationalizes health care.  France and Germany cannot meet the strictures of the Growth and Stability Pact they signed to join the euro; in fact, I don't think they've done it a single time!  This due to the deficits they run to fund their nanny states, to include health care.)

Take a look at this passage from The Struggle For Europe (pages 55-56) on the mess Britain created for itself by giving away the store.  The book is authored by William I. Hitchcock:“Alongside his heavy responsibilities for housing, (Ernest) Bevan also crafted the centerpiece of the Labour government’s social policy: the National Health Service.  The Churchill coalition, in 1944, proposed a National Health Service based on the twin principles that every citizen in the country had a right to the best medical facilities available and that these services should be free.  Bevan started by proposing the nationalization of all hospitals, which gave the government total control over the system and brought them into one unified structure.  The real problem was with the doctors and their lobbying arm, the British Medical Association.  They feared a loss of autonomy, a weakened relationship with patients, and of course, the inability to charge fees to paying customers who wished to have special treatment.  Bevan wisely decided to give the BMA what it demanded, but not before a great deal of invective from the doctors, who accused Bevan of seeking dictatorial control over the profession.

“Bevan took immense pride in the fact that ‘despite our financial and economic anxieties, we are still able to do the most civilized thing in the world – put the welfare of the sick in front of every other consideration’.  These were noble words, but very quickly it became clear the government underestimated the cost of the NHS.  Bevan assumed that free health care would mean a healthier public, and therefore fewer trips to the doctor.  He did not consider the natural human impulse to take full advantage of a free service. (Italics courtesy of Unsane) Consider the testimony of Mrs. Claire Bond of Leeds, recorded by the historian Paul Addison: “When the National Health Service came along, it was fantastic.  My mother and dad had been having problems with their teeth for ages, and I think they were the first at the dentist, as soon as it was opened, they were there for an appointment.  And instead of having just a few teeth out, they had the complete set out.  And free dentures.”  They were not alone.  In the first year of operation, eight and a half million people sought free dental treatment, and over 5 million pairs of free spectacles were dispensed.  Doctors wrote 187 million prescriptions in the first year alone.  Overnight, the NHS overran its budget by more than 50 million pounds.  By 1951 it cost more than 400 million pounds a year to run.  The chancellor of the Exchequer, then Hugh Gaitskill, insisted that a small charge be imposed on prescriptions for teeth and glasses; Bevan refused, saying it would undermine the principle of free service that lay at the heart of his Health Service.  On 23 April 1951, Bevan resigned in protest.”

Another thing to bear in mind is that one of the biggest motivating factors to a Canadian is to be different from the Americans, for their biggest fear is being like their neighbors to the south.  Canada owes its existence to the Declaration of Independence as much as we do, for they represent the reaction against it.I would be willing to bet that one of the reasons they love their health care system so much is that Americans do not have such a program.  (And if we adopt such a system, they will say with much snootiness that they inspired the Americans into getting such a system.)  But in reality, their socialistic approaches to many problems is only hurting them.  While the Canadian economy has expanded, it has not expanded NEARLY as fast as the U.S. economy.  And the Canadian economy has expanded due to their blessings of natural resources, not due to what even the governments prefer the driving engine to be - namely, manufacturing and industrial activity.  The gap between the U.S. and Canada continues to grow and expand, in the U.S.'s favor.  The Economist reports in their survey of Canada published in December 2005 that Americans made C$1800 more per person than Canadians back in 1981; but in 2003, this gap widened to C$7200.  The British publication further reports that Canadians are happy to be poorer if it means keeping their social model, for they see it is better than the heartless version of capitalism to the south.  I contend again that this points to the issue of national identity that Canadians continually struggle with.

Before you whine to me about the surge of the loonie, I would remind you to look up what "Dutch disease" is, and how that can threaten the Canadian economy.

Here's an admittedly unscientific measure of progression in health care: a listing of the nationalities of those who won the Nobel Prizes in Medicine from 1977 to 2004 in reverse order.

Between 1977 and 2004, U.S. doctors won 22 Nobel Prizes in Medicine - more than the other countries shown combined.  To save server space I did not list ALL the recipients, but I noticed that the Nobel prize winners in the early going were from many assorted European countries.  This began to change in the 1960s, when the listing of winners trended sharply American.  I wonder what motivated all of these doctors.  Pure altruism?  The commitment to doing work for free?  Did any of these doctors give away their prize money or refuse it?And why are all of these Nobel prize winners hailing from the United States?  Could it be that the system of health care here favors innovation and different approaches, due to the market-oriented system that exists here?  (And rewards such innovation?)  Why do I not see any Canadians listed here?  Why did the last French recipient get his or her prize in 1980?

Yet more evidence that gives me pause to wonder why there are so many in the United States dedicated to killing the goose that lays the golden eggs.

    “We’ve never seen gas

“We’ve never seen gas above $3 in November,” Mr. Obama told a crowd on a recent evening in Allison, Iowa. “People are working harder for less. Folks are maxing out on their credit cards, trying to stay afloat.

The dems painted themselves into a corner on Iraq and they are doing it on the economy.  How are they going to justify raising taxes when they say that people are living on the edge of bankruptcy?

And it doesn’t seem like Washington is listening.”

I realize Mr. Obama doesn't get back to Washington much but his fellow dems are in charge of congress.  Has he voiced his concern and dissappointment to them?

    Right on!

Right on! You're struggling---you leave me no choice but to RAISE YOUR TAXES.

    NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

    Noel

See if you can get the transscript from Fox this AM. I think it was around 10:45.  There was a Dem Congresscriter from Florida, think his name was Klein, that was spouting the same thing. He would admit there had been military gains BUT went on about the lack of political and ecomonic gains in Iraq.  I believe he had just read the above story. Sounded like it.

Democracy: Three wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch.

"Oh, no! You mean we can't

"Oh, no! You mean we can't get by with just opposing the war? You mean this election may be about us? Okay, how can we make voters think that we're just better versions of the Republicans? How do we hide who we really are? Come on, Katie, Brian, and Wolf, THINK!"

BTW, are the soldiers in the picture with Hillary real, or are they just cardboard cutouts she uses, when needed?

    Ahem...

"shift the focus to the lack of political progress there"

Might want to soft-pedal that talking point there, Sparky. People might start to notice the lack of political progress here.

    Party poopers, indeed.

Noel. That line can be re-written to better express where the MSM and these leading Democrats find themselves today:

As violence declines in Baghdad, the leading Democratic presidential candidates are undertaking a new and challenging balancing act on Iraq: acknowledging that this success has been achieved not only without their support, but rather, in-spite of their interference.

They're not just late to the party, the've done their damn best to keep the party from coming about.

    War Vote......

      The Democratic Mantra.......

2003, I voted for the war

2004, I voted for the war, but apposed the war

2005, I never voted for the war

2006, I would have never voted for this terrible war

2007, Oh yes, I did vote for the war

2008, I VOTED FOR THE WAR AS WE MOVE ON TO VICTORY!

    And that, my friend, is

And that, my friend, is Real(time)politik...

    The Half Step Key Change

As the violence in Iraq continues to decline, and as
most in the Democrat party ignore this development and instead focus on the
political objectives the Maliki administration has failed to meet, a new political
dynamic is developing. First off, it’s kind of hard to be militantly anti-war,
if there’s no war going on -- which is a very real possibility in the coming
year. And if the Iraq war continues to improve, the left wing base will lose one of their most
unifying and emotional issues. To be sure, we’ll still have troops in Iraq, but as the
focus shifts from daily IED attacks to political reconciliation, the tone has and will continue to change on the issue.

So how does this affect the race for the 2008 Democrat
Nominee? It helps the Clintons a great deal mostly because she voted for the Iraq war, and if the surge progress continues, that fact won’t be lost on her campaign. If this trend keeps up, what
I see happening is the far left voters primarily staying home during
the primaries. And that would be a huge boost to the Clintons.

    Did anyone watch Chris

Did anyone watch Chris Wallace this am?? Combover Carl Levin
says..."Oh, we've always supported the troops and given them all the
tools they've needed to fight this war".....what a hack. I hope
the GOP jumps on these liberal idiots. Dont weenie out like we
usually do. Next Hillary will take all the credit for the surge
    working.

    GOP.....grow a back bone.

    What's really hilarious...

    I loved this part...

If security continues to improve, President Bush could become less
of a drag on his party, too, and Republicans may have an easier time
zeroing in on other issues, such as how the Democrats have proposed
raising taxes in difficult economic times
    .

Quite a catch-22, eh? If the Democrats would have admitted how good the economy has been, they wouldn't be vulnerable to something like this! But the Democrats (and the Times) can't admit that there are good things about unemployment under 5%, and good things about low tax rates. And they certainly can't admit that the latter has caused the former.

    Reality Check

    “As Democrats See

“As Democrats See Security Gains in Iraq, Tone Shifts.”

< phhfehh ! > - a (my) verbal skeptical reaction to anything remotely resembling sanity, reason, logic or acknowledgement of US military/ Iraqi/ Pres. Bush progress in the Iraq War ... usually followed by the letters u-c-k.

    The New York Times asserts:

The New York Times asserts: "Democrats have proposed raising taxes in difficult economic times."

"[D]ifficult economic times"?  Hahahahahahaha.  Try: "Despite the booming, booming, booming Bush economic boom continuing to boom and boom and boom, the Democrats propose ending the booming Bush economic boom with their thoroughly discredited Marxist/socialist economic theories."

    The 2 Militaries

It galls me to high heaven whenever I see these grinning baboons pose for pictures like those Brit baboons did with their cheap suits in Iran with Ahmadinejad last year in mirror image to that above.

How any soldier could pose with Hillary grinning knowing it was her Abu Gharib play along with all Democrats and liberals who got over 2500 American soldiers murdered is beyond the pale. No United States Soldier would have anything to do with this trash.......and yet here we have thing 1 and thing 2 with appendage head guy in the back posing with a butcher.

In that there are 2 United States militaries. There is that feminist queer be all you can't be who goes and comes home to be a Tom Daschle "lookie at what I got on my Al Gore and John Kerry Sheezam military record" screwing this nation up.........and then there is thee United States Military, thee protector of the nation and as wonderful a group of men and women as ever walked the world.

I know these weekend warrior types posing with Hamrod Clinton. I never post what I know about them. I never mention them being 40 guy whores used for sperm dumps in Iraq or those cute flaps married and serving out of harms way in England, but being banged by a black non com being shared with their bored husbands.
I know of these disgraceful types as I hear their stories from the real military Soldiers who look with disgust at this Clinton army.

Grinning with Hillary Clinton..........why in the hell don't you worthless fatherless children just sign up to serve in Putin's corps and march to the Chicom goose step as you are a disgrace to that uniform so many have served and died under.

Could have went all day and not seen that picture. Hillary Clinton LOATHES THE MILITARY and there cling the monkeys hanging from her tree.

    Breaking - Trend is trendy

So I guess it's now safe to use the "trend" word.

Somebody please explain this to me - If the "newspaper of (democrat) record" and the Democrats now agree that our military has made undeniably significant progress in Iraq.......why is the dem controlled congress still denying funding to our military which has obviously proven they deserve a reward for their remarkable efforts?

I understand that the dems feel military success is not an option and dems consider our men and women in uniform to be knuckle dragging neanderthals something akin to Ghengis Kahn. But why do the self-described "compassionate" dems in Congress that continually lecture us how concerned they are for the "little guy" feel it necessary to punish civilian contractors at American bases by refusing to pass a military funding bill, particularly during the holiday season?   The dem congress certainly had no problem implementing Jack Murtha's (D-feat) 47 earmarks for pork, one of which was a million dollar plus earmark to a company that doesn't even exist.

If Iraqi tribal chiefs and former Iraqi militamen that once opposed our troops now work side by side aiding our troops, doesn't our successful military men and women deserve better from the dem controlled Congress here in the US?  If the NY Times would take a break from telling the dems what they have to do to win the next election maybe they can get around to addressing the above question.

    acumen... the dems are

acumen... the dems are still hoping against hope we are defeated in Iraq...you can be sure they are secretly happy when there is more suicide type bombings like they had over the last few days.

It is pathetic but more than that is is traitorous denying the money they need... it is outrageous...them thinking this is going to help them with the looney left is well looney in itself...plus the dems are trying to spin this towards the republicans with the word filibuster...it would be amusing if it wasn't so maddening, especially if you watch the Senate any.

Did you happen to catch Levin vs. Graham today on Fox Sunday? I was quite proud of Lindsey for a change today.

    NYT shilling for HRC?

When was that photo of HRC with the troops taken? The caption just says
Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, shown with troops in Iraq....no date.

I didn't know she went there recently. Is that an old photo the NYT
dragged out to show how HRC "supports the troops"?
The lack of a date seems suspicious.....

Out of all the file photos they have of Iraq troops, why use that one?

    MB

    MB,

That didn't come from NYT. I found it on the Internet. It's from her Senate website. She was in Iraq last January.

While I was at her site, I found a better picture which I just substituted. ns

Noel, I was just doing some

Noel, I was just doing some research and answered my own question. The photo you have up now actually is, coincidentally, the same photo from the NYT story (check the link to see it).

Now out of all the file photos that the NYT could have posted for this story, why pick an old file photo that shows HRC with a bunch of smiling troops?

I know, I know, we all know the NYT is in the tank for Her Royal Clintoness, but jeez, this story didn't even need a picture. Just another opportunity for an in-kind contribution to her campaign.

PS. since you're obviously here: what's going on with the site? Things taking forever and a day to upload.

    Excellent, mb

I believe in SERE school, they call this "disinformation".....pretend like you're happy about the propaganda pic....but show one's displeasure by the crossed fingers.  LOL.  This particular photo has made the rounds, numerous times.

Hillary is so disconnected from "the troops" that she never had a clue.  IIRC, on that particular trip to Iraq, her helicopter pilots dubbed her flights "Broomstick 11".

Blonde, someone would like to disagree with you.

(No, Bill, don't call Blonde "honey"; she won't like it.)

Former President Clinton says his wife has strong support among military voters and the Democratic presidential candidate is up to the task of rebuilding the nation's military after years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"I think she will do better than you think (with military voters) because she has an enormous amount of allies around the country in the military," Clinton told The Associated Press on Monday night following a private, $2,300-a-plate fundraiser for Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Florida Panhandle. ...

    dahlia,

Funny you should mention that article. That earth-shattering event took place not too far from the Rabbit's house.

Two observations. One, I have been to the restaurant in question. It is a trough. It is ran by a bed-wetting liberal who, within the next month or so, will also invite the Breck Girl for a $1,000-a-plate fund drive.

This restauranteer has the audacity to believe that if trial attorneys were to elect the next president, then the U.S. would be a far better place.

Two. I personally know far too many military members who live in this area and not a single one of them would vote for Hitlerly Rotten Clintoon, even if the lives of their families depended on it.

Sweet post.  It shows how deluded the Clintonistas truly are.

The military, hates her ass (well, okay, maybe there are 5% who don't).

Does anyone here, seriously, not understand the disdain in which HRC holds the military?  After her (um, Bill's) tenure in the White House?

I cannot imagine one military member who would follow this harpy, as CIC.

If Hillary thinks she has the military vote, she is more delusional than we all think she is.

Former President Clinton says his wife has strong support among military voters

Did he actually say that with a straight face?

Of course he did. These people actually believe it. The delusional leading the deluded.

I do have to disagree on one point, though, Blonde. If the worst comes to pass, and she is elected, all of our troops are honorable, and will do their duty, even with her as CIC. They did it in spite of her husband, and they will not betray their oaths even with her in office (God forbid!)

    Blonde, I edited my post

Blonde, I edited my post and lost the bit about the crossed-fingers photo, so some might not realize what it was. So here is the link to it again.

However, my point wasn't that, but why the NYT is using an old file photo of HRC with the troops in a story about changing tides in Iraq? What possible reason could there be, other than the propaganda value of a picture of her "supporting the troops"?

    motherbelt

Your point was exactly the ONE point.

The troops despise Broomstick 11. (In other words, HRC).

The fact that the NYT uses an old file photo is just kind of the point of this site....media bias.   LOL.   The NYT can use any old photo they please....but, it makes a point, yes?  Just like their injudicious choice here?  We all remember.  Silly fools.

They're too stupid to get it.

Yes, and I still didn't get in the fact that the photo was from 2003! And look at her suit, the tee-shirt under the blouse, the hair...it's the same as the NYT photo from today. they used a 4-year-old picture in a current story, and didn't label it a file photo or anything.

    Isn't that unethical?

    Nevermind...you already addressed that. LOL
