Chris Wallace on the Biden Double Standard and Media’s Anti-war Bias

People that don't foolishly depend on the mainstream media for current events are painfully aware of the most recent round of racially insensitive statements made by Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.).

As is typical, this went largely ignored by press outlets that would have been all over the remarks had a Republican presidential candidate made them.

Of course, these same media members are also hesitant to share any good news from Iraq.

With that in mind, "Fox News Sunday" host Chris Wallace was WOR radio Steve Malzberg's guest Thursday afternoon, during which time he made some observations about media bias that few in the industry would dare.

What follows is Wallace's marvelous view of what would have happened to a Republican presidential candidate if he had made similar racist comments as Biden's, as well as bonus coverage you will surely enjoy (audio available here):

He would have been killed. He would have been roasted...Listen, there is bias in the media. I don't disagree with that. Look, the great untold story, do you know how many casualties, one is too many, but do you know how many American soldiers were killed either in direct action or even by accidents in the month of October in Iraq? 34.

[...]

And now that's a, if you're a parent of one of those people, it's a tragedy. But having said that, that story is untold. I haven't heard it any place except Fox News. And, and, you know why? Because there are members of the mainstream media who don't like good news coming out of Iraq, and the fact is the surge is working. Is it creating a Jeffersonian democracy? No. Have those guys gotten together and created political reconciliation? No. But is the situation on the ground, in the street, whether it's Baghdad or Anbar province, is it demonstrably safer than it was three, four months ago? Absolutely. And you don't see it in the New York Times, and you don't see it in the Washington Post.

Sadly, this is why right-thinking Americans across the fruited plain have stopped holding their breath hoping to see good news from Iraq in those papers, Chris.

Chris Wallace is one of

Chris Wallace is one of those apples that did fall far from the tree. (Thank Goodness!)

Blown away

Indeed.  Must have been a gale force wind blowing throught the orchard that day.

Gotta say it, Wallace runs

Gotta say it, Wallace runs the only Sunday morning show worth watching.

Yea, I became a fan when

Yea, I became a fan when Clinton threw his belligerent tirade at him.

Concur!

I so concur with that.

Once I started watching his show, Meet the Depressed, Deface the Nation and This Tweak immediately went out the window.

Res tantum valet quantum vendi potest.

Yes, I have given up on all

Yes, I have given up on all those other Sunday morning shows.  Not worth the time to change the channel from Sponge Bob Squarepants.....

34 deaths in October!

Very close to the death count in Philly. When do you think the msm will begin covering "The War In Philadelphia?"

Yet you have San Fran Nan

Yet you have San Fran Nan going on TV today saying we are fighting a loosing war and it gets plastered all over the place.  The MSM will stay away from it because it makes their Dem Party look bad.

The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is the rifle recoil.

Losing War?

It's going to kinda suck to be Nancy when we declare victory, then, isn't it?

Of course we're not losing, hence the resounding thunder of MsM silence.  Think they'll issue a retraction?

Idiots.

Evening Gator

True as can be.  The silence is deafening.

The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is the rifle recoil.

Silence is Golden

Particularly from the MsM on Iraq.  It means they have nothing destructive to report.

Here's a bit of good news, from over at Blackfive.

Waiting for VI Day.  It's going to be soon, too.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

What is sad is he will be

What is sad is he will be buried in an unmarked grave because someone with no idea we defile it in some way.

Freaking sad.

The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is the rifle recoil.

Kinnock

Say, is Neil Kinnock still around?

If Joe Biden hired him as a speechwriter, he'd kill two birds with one stone.

1) He'd avoid accusations of plagiarism,

and 2) Kinnock might help keep Biden's foot from winding up in his mouth.

Unsane

The problem Unsane is he already has two in there.  How will he get another in?

The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is the rifle recoil.

Zero imagination!

Silly, unimaginative man. Kinnock could volunteer his...

:-)

Unsane... They don't need

Unsane... They don't need to be in his mouth. :p

The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is the rifle recoil.

Demedia Proves News No Good

"...there are members of the mainstream media who don't like good news coming out of Iraq..."

Speaking of good news coming out of Iraq and media silence, Clifford D. May has a wonderful article addressing that subject at National Review Online.  What follows is a portion of Mr. May's article (emphasis mine):

Start with lack of information: The average news consumer probably has no clue that Gen. David Petreaus’ new strategy has crippled al Qaeda in Iraq, that Americans and Iraqis are now fighting side-by-side against both Sunni and Shia extremists, and that the elimination of terrorist safe havens and weapons caches has improved security for average Iraqis in parts of the country that a few months ago were snake pits.

As for misinformation, how many people still believe that guards in Guantanamo flushed Korans down the toilet, that U.S. Marines committed a massacre at Haditha, and that American soldiers ridicule women disfigured by bombs, run over puppies for sport and desecrate graves for a laugh? All of this was reported in such mainstream publications as Newsweek and The New Republic. None of it is true.

...the conventional storyline is that Iraq is Vietnam redux: Americans are the “occupiers” and anyone who fights them must be “the Resistance.” Reporters who dispute that narrative are apt to dine alone.

As to why lower military casualty rates and fewer insurgent attacks are not seen as newsworthy, CNN’s Barbara Starr told media critic Howard Kurtz that it was not yet clear that such developments represent “a trend.” (As reported by NB here and here) But the lines on the graph have been heading south since at least June. Is there any doubt that if U.S. forces had been losing ground for five months it would be a huge story?

The following is a perfect example of what both Mr. Wallace and Mr. May are expressing - something of great importance that happened today not in Iraq but right here at home.  However no major media to my knowledge has picked up on this AP story (emphasis mine):

WASHINGTON (AP) — Sunni Arab leaders from Iraq’s Anbar province asked Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Wednesday for U.S. help in expanding their police forces.

They included Sheik Ahmed Abu Risha, older brother of Abdul-Sattar Abu Risha, the leader of a Sunni revolt against al-Qaida in Iraq who was assassinated near the provincial capital of Ramadi in September.

The slain sheik had organized Sunni Arab clans into an alliance to drive al-Qaida from sanctuaries in Anbar province where the terror movement had flourished since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.

Also attending Wednesday’s meeting at the Pentagon were the chairman of the Anbar provincial council, the governor of Anbar, the mayor of the city of Ramadi and others, according to Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell.

Morrell said the half-hour meeting was “very warm and productive,” coming nearly two months after Gates joined President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in a one-day visit to Anbar province for talks with provincial leaders, including the slain Abdul-Sattar Abu Risha.

Morrell said the Anbar leaders told Gates they hoped that the improved security they helped achieve in predominantly Sunni Anbar could be replicated elsewhere in Iraq. They also asked for U.S. help in expanding and equipping the provincial police force.

They asked for all manner of our support,” Morrell said.

Yet less than 2 months ago CBS did not hesitate to report on the death and funeral of the same slain Sunni leader Abdul-Sattar Abu Risha mentioned above.

As Pat Dollard correctly reminds us on his blog Young Americans (emphasis mine):

Now keep in mind that these gentlemen represent the very defeat of Al Qaeda in Iraq, and represent what was basically half of the entire insurgency. They are now are active combat allies

I agree Pat.  Kind of important background information that most Americans would probably want to know about but the demedia "feels" otherwise. Pat goes on to tell us why - Where’s the coverage? Trampled under the foot of Leftist politics.

Chris Wallace

With him you get someone who actually ask tough questions no matter which party.

Hit the nail on the head

EXACTLY.
