Laura Ingraham fans are going to be very pleased by this announcement: the conservative talk radio host has been officially hired by the Fox News Network.
As reported by Variety Thursday:
Fox News Channel has signed radio host Laura Ingraham as the primary substitute for "The O'Reilly Factor" and "Hannity & Colmes," the network said Thursday.
MediaBistro had more:
In making the announcement, [Bill Shine, Senior Vice President of Programming] said, "I have been an admirer of Laura's work for quite some time. She is a welcome addition to the FOX News family."
Ingraham added, "After years of guest appearances on FOX, I couldn't be happier about the opportunity to add my voice to FNC's stellar lineup."
Neither could we, Laura. Good luck!

What happened to Michelle
October 27, 2007 - 16:00 ET by msh1973What happened to Michelle Malkin? She was very good at filling in for O'Reilly. What will become of Laura's radio program?
O'Reilly does both TV and radio
October 27, 2007 - 16:06 ET by RJSo do Hannity and Colmes. I'm sure Laura can do it, too.
Also, I suspect Michelle Malkin became too much of a hot-button target of the left, so Fox went with the safer hire.
On her site, Michelle said
October 27, 2007 - 16:11 ET by robert108On her site, Michelle said that she left O'Reilly due to his not coming down hard on Geraldo for his comment about spitting on her.
I agree with Malkin.
October 27, 2007 - 18:10 ET by motherbeltI agree with Malkin. O'Reilly let Geraldo off easy. He first made it sound like the venom was bilateral (you and Michelle got into something...) than "asked" him if he wanted to say anything or apologize. He should have said: Listen, we don't do that stuff here, and I expect you to apologize, or you won't be welcome here any more.
As for Ms. Malkin, if you've ever seen her column where she divulges some of the vicious, ugly hate mail she gets, you won't blame her for not wanting to subject herself to that crap on O'Reilly's show to boot.

October 27, 2007 - 20:46 ET by CaringwhiteguyWhile I like Michelle Malkin it's pretty apparent she's no broadcast professional. She's a great thinker and comes across relatively well. She's always interesting and provocative. She is not, however, nearly as polished and confident on air as is Laura Ingraham. While MM got jobbed by that slimy little pr**k Geraldo that's no reason to give her more airtime. Ingraham is a terrific addition and I'm looking forward to seeing more of her.
Hi msh.... I see we both
October 27, 2007 - 16:08 ET by bigtimerHi msh....
I see we both are wondering about M. Malkin...lol.
Also I would imagine Laura will still do her radio show.
I love Michelle Malkin, but
October 27, 2007 - 20:02 ET by candanceI love Michelle Malkin, but I don't think she really has the stomach to survive in the gutter of political pundits. Between Chris Matthews making her cry and Geraldo threatening to spit on her, she got a couple doses of hardcore politics. Since then she has considerably withdrawn her public presence.

I have lost respect a lot for Fox over the last two years, but I will catch certain shows still, just like I do elsewhere to keep up with the enemy instead of just sound-bites and besides that I am a nutty political junkie.
Another crying shame blunder that Fox is making, only reason the other networks don't catch up with ratings is their own pure leftist agenda...give Fox time, they forget to dance with the ones who brung them... they eventually won't be top dog anymore either.
Excellent post and I
October 27, 2007 - 17:30 ET by CrimsonfistedExcellent post and I totally agree with it. The disrespect shown Michelle Malkin, and the horrible Geraldo not getting his due, just is so frustrating. If a co-worker had behaved that way toward me the way he did toward her, I would have expected disciplinary action against him.

Michelle is still appearing
October 27, 2007 - 17:34 ET by Gary P JacksonMichelle is still appearing on Fox as a guest. She just quit her guest hosting gig, in protest. Shame too, because she did very well, and didn't take no stuff off of anyone! It was good exposure too.

October 27, 2007 - 17:43 ET by bigtimerPlus she was just getting the sea-legs good and steady IMO, she was starting to get comfortable with the camera and such...she was really in no time....
Glad she will be a guest and such...I just wish she wouldn't of protested, I think she would of worked up to getting her own hour show, but then again, I know my temperament and I would most likely be in jail for what I would of done to Geraldo.....heheheee

I don't know if she would want a show to herself. She gets enough grief, as I said above, just from her writing and guest appearances. Not that she couldn't take it; I just don't see why she would want to subject herself to mor of that.

October 27, 2007 - 20:06 ET by candanceEven with her simple website, she has more fans than Rivera, no matter how much airtime they give that guy.
Rivera is like the bad piece of property an agent gets stuck with, so they promote it to every customer they can in the hopes of making some kind of profit.
And yes, I agree he should have been suspended for that crap. Self-righteous grandstander.

October 27, 2007 - 16:52 ET by bigtimerHi Buford...
I have to get, but I just wanted to clarify one thing, when I said in my above post about Fox making another bad decision it was about them hiring Geraldo and keeping him on as long as they have, it wasn't about Laura...I like her just fine.
I just think not keeping Malkin and them keeping the sleaze Rivers is pure rotten.
As an aside the first time I ever complained to a network via email after I got this PC was to Fox about Geraldo and Shepp Smith during Katrina...I know I wasn't the only one, but a lot of good it did us. Instead they put him next to BOR and others so they could defend him, they did the same with Shepp only not to the same extent as if that is going to make any of us forget....reminds me of the leftist tactics in that regard.
Plus I don't even want to get started about Geraldo and his love for th illegal aliens here ect....
Geraldo
October 27, 2007 - 18:05 ET by BufordBT, I agree about Geraldo, to have him as a regular is horrible, Michelle and Laura are fill-ins and add class to the channel. The loss of Michelle is regretable but understandable, but I blame BOR for not defending her.
I'm going to be very un-PC
October 27, 2007 - 18:56 ET by motherbeltI'm going to be very un-PC and say this: I don't believe the rumor that his "real" name is Gerry Rivers, but I think if Geraldo Rivera were a regular white guy named Bob Smith, he wouldn't get away with half of what he gets away with.

October 27, 2007 - 19:04 ET by motherbeltThey are not stupid. They know that when people watch TV, they don't want to see people that look just like them. They want better-than-average looks.
Greta van Susteren fixed herself up a lot when she moved to Prime-time Fox. She quit wearing those man-suit blazers, softened up her look, her hair, her makeup, started wearing jewelry...
and has anyone seen Susan Estrich lately? She used to look like the feminist from hell. Last time I saw her on Fox, her hair was still straight, but much nicer looking (maybe she had gotten a really good cut), she had nice makeup on, and believe it or not, she was wearing a little black sleeveless dress. My first thought was: she's trying to look like Ann Coulter!!
they know they have to compete, and it's the whole package that sells the product.
As for the "pornification of the news" I'm not sure what you mean, so I won't comment on that.

Pornification
October 27, 2007 - 20:58 ET by motherbeltI just didn't know if you meant pornifying the stories, as in doing more tabloid-type stories, (as Rather said, "tarting up" the news) or going for looks and glamour in the women hosts, rather than substance.

October 27, 2007 - 16:54 ET by bulbasaurGood for her. She's worked hard on her radio show, and with her producers deserves every bit of credit for creating a winning format.

Happy for Laura Ingraham
October 27, 2007 - 16:59 ET by KC MulvilleI don't know about the Malkin squabble, but as for the original point of the post, I think adding Laura Ingraham is a good move for Fox. She certainly isn't another interchangeable talking head. I just hope that she doesn't try to become a bombthrower, just to be different. She already is different, so I hope she trusts that.
However, while we're on the topic ... I already know where I can find a fight on TV. Does anyone know where I can find a respectful conversation? I'm not talking about a fawning interview where a liberal throws softballs to another liberal, or the conservative version of the same. I'm also not talking about a quick drive-by segment. It would be a show where neither a liberal nor a conservative would feel threatened, but could expect a challenge at the same time.
I guess what I'm looking for is a 2007 version of Firing Line. Buckley used to have on thinkers from every slice of the spectrum. JKGalbraith and Arthur Schlesinger would go on all the time, and they were as liberal as they come. Buckley wouldn't attack his guests, or try to bend their answers into a gotcha sound byte. Instead, he offered them a civil conversation, and he always kept his promise. I guess Charlie Rose is the closest to that today, but I wish we had more options that that.
Special Report KC
October 27, 2007 - 17:05 ET by acumenDoes anyone know where I can find a respectful conversation?
First thing that popped into my pea brain KC is Special Report. I'm not talking about the pundit section during the last 15 minutes but the one on one between Britt and a guest he brings on. Britt has some outstanding guests offering great insights rarely seen elsewhere. I find these short 5 minute pieces to be exactly what you were describing.
Oh, and Laura is indeed a welcome addition. Would love to see her get her own hour time slot. Thanks for the info Noel.
Intelligent discussion
October 27, 2007 - 17:31 ET by ChaitealoverAnother good choice would be the Fox Sunday program with Chris Wallace. His interviews are generally tough, but the interviewee is usually articulate and given time to respond. Chris, however, doesn't allow them to dodge the question. When he has interviewees with differing opinions, both are given time to talk, one at a time, not over each other.
I'm glad Laura will be O'Reilly's sub, but I'd rather see her as Gretchen's replacement.

The Real Question is will BOR let Laura do an entire show?
October 27, 2007 - 17:30 ET by Philly Pete 07I have noticed that whenever O'Reilly has a fill in they always have at least one segment perhaps more where a pre-recorded piece of a Bill O'Reilly rerun is shown. It takes away from the fill in host's time. I've wondered is that because of some insecurity on the part of BOR, or is it just an untrust FOX has for the fill in host. I too like Michele Malkin but I think the choice of Laura is outstanding. Laura certainly gets it and like Michele Malkin is not afraid to put her opinions out there. My impression is that Malkin and Ingraham are friends, who maintain an equal admiration for each other. I would like to think that one of Laura's guests to one of her fill in spots would be Michele Malkin. I hope the FOX network trusts Laura enough to allow her to do a complete show without the obligatory BOR rerun. I look forward to Laura doing a complete FACTOR show.
