Saturday Sports Open Thread

With Rutgers upsetting USF Thursday, it seems a metaphysical certitude that this crazy season of underdog victories will continue. With that in mind, here are the games that could produce surprises:

Without appearing to suck up to my dear friend Blonde, I think Florida beats Kentucky. They've had a good week off to prepare, and from what I've read, have had strong practices during this period. By contrast, after a win like Kentucky had over LSU Saturday, it can be tough to have focused practices, which often leads to a disappointing letdown. I like Florida here to right its season with a win today.

I predicted last week that Oregon State could beat my Bears (full disclosure, this is my alma!) as I had been told that Longshore's injury was more serious than being reported. As such, I'm concerned that UCLA could also upset Cal today destroying what prior to last Saturday evening looked like a miracle season.

Colorado has a real shot at beating Kansas in Boulder today. I think the Buffalos are a much stronger team than their record shows, and now that the Huskers have fallen off the cliff, a win today makes their whole season thereby setting them up nicely for 2008.

Not much of an upset call here, but Illinois at home should beat Michigan.

*****Update: Florida beat Kentucky. UCLA beat Cal (sigh).

Go Boston!

Wily veteran Curt Shilling or 19 game winner Fausto Carmona?

Red Sox bats or Indian bats?

Red Sox bullpen or Indian bullpen?

On paper, it's a toss-up.   Could be a very good game.

Maybe it was my imagination,

...but I thought I saw fear in Cleveland's eyes last game. I think they lost their chance to put the Sox away.

maybe, dervish

...they did seem chagrined (am I allowed to use that word when talking sports?) about having their ticket punched for a return trip to Boston.

Schilling's Thoughts On Tonight

I heard a radio interview this morning with Curt, and he was comparing tonight's game to the Bloody Sock game in 2004's ALCS. He noted that he has more pitches to use this year as compared to then.

Weather forecast for Fenway is nice-gametime temp will be in the 60s, not too shabby for late October!

Also, Del, Shilling said the '04 Yankee lineup was

"as good as I've ever faced."  He didn't come out and say it, but I think he was hinting they were better than the Indians.

I'm glad his ego is still strong, but I hope his body is, too....and that he doesn't have to eat his words...  ;^)

So, it's..

bottom of the sixth, and the BoSox are up 10-1. Schilling is looking stronger the longer he goes, and the fat lady is warming up.

Like my daddy always said: If you can do what you say you can do, you ain't bragging.

J.D. Drew !!!

Talk about a sleeper cell...

I hope I don't have to eat my words, but

I'm thinking that between momentum, home field, the Indians depleted bull pen, the Sox fresh bull pen, the Indians anxiety, the Sox confidence.....Red Sox have a decided advantage tonight.

Now, if Dice-K, just doesn't implode again...

Agreed --

--- and did you witness the close by Gagne? He looked like he was in his old Dodger uniform. Looks like the planets are aligning nicely over Boston this month.

I am waiting for my Heels

I am waiting for my Heels to breakout in football like the other basketball schools-KY, KU, Illinois, and Wake. Don’t look like it will happen this year.

Blonde I have the same gut feeling I had last week when KY played LSU. Sorry but the Gators are going to suffer a devastating loss. Have you been watching Gameday? Kentucky Fried Gator with Tebow Toast. Got to love it.

Stevie boy will be in the driver’s seat in the SEC east after today.

Phat Phil will stay out of the soup line for at least one more week with the Vols win over Bama.

I am leaning toward Auburn. Can’t stand them but I am leaning that way. I can’t stomach the thought of them playing in the SEC championship game. They are the best road team in the nation over the past 3 years.

The SEC is still the best conference in the nation even though they keep beating up on each other.

Who will lose the Worst in the state of Florida Bowl? FSU or Miami? Last year with Jeff Bowden as offensive coordinator FSU 29 PPG Avg. FIRE HIM This season 22 PPG. Bobby needs to go.

I have a feeling that the Spartans are going to hand the Buckeyes their heads. This is based on the fact that the # 1 ranked team hasn’t faired well at all.

The whole BSC is going to be in a mess after Va Tech beats BC on Thursday night.

Who will be the winner of the Buyout Bowl? A&M or Nebraska? Oh for the days of Tom Osborne.

Southern by birth, Tarheel by the grace of God!

Funny Rick!

This is getting to be a Saturday habit.

Gators aren't going down for a third time in a row.

Agreed about Auburn....but don't count LSU out just yet.

You know what they say. If

You know what they say. If it happens twice it happens trice. That too is part of reasoning

Forgot this earlier.

Upset special of the week- ND over USC. The Trojans are shook up from the plane ride. They are still cleaning out their shorts. There is a God in heaven

Southern by birth, Tarheel by the grace of God!

rick

if ND beats USC; Cale Yarborough will win the 2008 Winston Cup driving a 57 Chevy

Botg

He'll have to drive the car of tomorrow.

Southern by birth, Tarheel by the grace of God!

I wouldn't be surprised

No surprise to me if ND thumps my Trojans...

They have enough injuries right now to look like Army decided to feild a team full of Walter Reed inpatients.

Bama beats UT

Bama beats UT today

Gators roll over UK (again)

Gators vs USC l8tr for the SEC East

Hey Chad

Long time, no see.

Great to have you here, particularly today with the doom & gloom.  These dodos on Game Day are trying to make the Gators sound like a high school team.  Disgusting.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Hey Blonde good to see you

Hey Blonde good to see you also. ITs Urban renewal time !!

I have been spending a lot of time at gatorcountry.com. Its FOOTBALL season wooohoooo

Chad and Blonde

Corso picked the Gators. That means a sure win for the Wildcats.

Southern by birth, Tarheel by the grace of God!

Rick ~ Game Day

What was up with THAT today?  They blathered on the entire time about Kentucky this, Kentucky that...Corso even brought up that Troy scored 31 points on us (gee...we only scored 150 or so), then put on the Albert head and did the Gator Chomp.

I'm going with Herb, tho.  I can't stand Lee Corso.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Game Day

I didn't understand that either. With about 15 minutes to go I was sure he was going to pick KY.

I just walked out to get the mail and was watching all the cars with Pirates flags go by. (Go to the end of my road, turn left and it is about a 25 miles straight shot to Downey-Ficklen at ECU.) If ECU beats NCSU they will have more ACC wins than DOOK, NCSU or Carolina.  Could be the best team in this state if Wake falls flat.

Southern by birth, Tarheel by the grace of God!

Thanks, NS

Gators all the way, baby!

Watching College Game Day now....hmmm.

Other games of interest (well, at least for me).

Canes vs. FSU....going w/the garnet & gold.

TN vs. Bama....picking Bama.  Just because Fat Phil bugs me, and I go for the West team.

This has been a crazy season with all of the upsets.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Hey B

goodmorning, Miami vs FSU one of them has to lose you win!!

Do i remember correctly that you are on Dolphins fan?  They will get a beatin on Sunday

"The more I study science, the more I believe in God."     Einstein

Hey Bruce

This is a great Miami/FSU game.....their fans are all moaning and groaning like I haven't EVER heard.  Too Funny!   Bobby Bowden's had a great run, but it's time for him to retire.

As for the Olphins....you can't give away tickets to Jockey Short stadium these days.  Seriously.

Wow, these boobs on Game Day are starting to annoy me...."Gators with a hat-trick".

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Sigghh...

I think you're right about Bama, sadly -- Bama almost always plays above their ability against TN, and it always takes TN by surprise. But if the orange team that played Georgia shows up again, who knows?

Bama

Well, it's about time the Bama fans to get what's been paid for.   Who are the Dawgs playing today?  Dave?

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Georgia

gots the day off. Gators next week. Heh.

UGA??

Oooo...

Ain't goin' there, son. Dawgs'll let you insult their mommas before they let you insult Uggah.

BAMA is finally on the road

BAMA is finally on the road to recovery after they were held down and brutally raped by a gang of other S.E.C institutions and the NCAA.

Recruiting is going GREAT - and expecting even greater recruiting in the near future.

Unfortunately, I believe we lose to tennessee today.

score:

tenn-34

BAMA-20

B,

Dogs are off today. Thank God.

I'll be watching LSU later. Only game I have time for today.

Looks like GT is headed for a win.

We need BAMA to beat

We need BAMA to beat UT

Roll Tide

Pleasant Surprise, to say the least..........

Alabama: 41

Upset of the Week?

Vandy dumped the Old Ball Coach.  Who woulda thunk?

Congrats on your Bama win.  Looks like you got to play the same Tennessee team we did.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Blonde

a big one for sure.

Also, i see the Gators are up 21-10 at the half.

Horns hooked em

B,

Yes, things are shaping up nicely today.  Looks like Noel's Bears are hanging in.

Vandy was a shocker.  I'm going to have to watch for the highlights of that one....I bet the visor hit the field multiple times.

Gotta go...game's back on.

Oh great, they're reviewing it.

Boos by Kentucky fans...I'm loving it!

Blonde --

"Looks like you got to play the same Tennessee team we did"

Looks to me like there's an itinerant mercenary defensive unit in Tennessee, and Vanderbilt had dibs this week.

Sorry about that, dervish

I really was referring to your post with my comment....what IS up with the Vols?  Usually they scare me to death.  But they've just kind of fallen off lately.

And while you're at the commentary...Vandy?  And how irate is Steve'O tonite?  That's a topic for a whole new thread, I'm thinking.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

No offense taken...

As I've said before, we have twice as many SEC wins as I expected at this point. Kaintuck is obviously for real, and Arkansas still has some grit. Now we can't even count on Vandy to keep us out of the cellar. Thank God for the division of the SEC a few years ago -- at least now we can't be worse than sixth, but I don't see better than a tie for fifth. And if we don't go to a bowl this year -- a real one, I mean -- well, let's just say the Knoxville realtors have Fulmer on speed dial.

I kinda thought the Cocks had been playing over their heads, but I never thought that Vandy would be the one to rain on them. Bet the Ol' Ball Coach went through a case of visors today. There's going to be a hot time on the practice field in Columbia this week, even if there's a foot of snow on the ground. And, unfortunately, that gives Stevie another reason to want to hang points on us next week; if we lose by less than 40 it will only be because our alumni pay Carolina to keep the point spread down.

USC plays the Irish, only

USC plays the Irish, only in a movie could that upset occur.

Go Red Sox!!

#14Florida over #8Kentucky is this really an upset pick?

look for LSU to rebound against Auburn

Cal probally has enough to beat UCLA even with Longshore not at 100%

Joe Torre

Joe Torre for press secretary in the next Republican president's administration!? Or Mayor of NY as Bloomberg is term limited.

Yeah,

I admire his sand. And while I know it was, it should be pointed out that only in the other-world of the NY Yankees could a $5 million offer be considered an insult.

if he manages

another team, he will make less than that, but managing the Yanks and dealing with the Stienbrenner klan requires a substantial additional sum.

and what incentives allowed his salary to exceed 7.5 mil if the Yanks won the WS?

the aspect of this which could be truly devastating is what of Rivera and A-rod?

"The more I study science, the more I believe in God."     Einstein

I hear you.They could lose

I hear you. They could lose A-Rod,Mariano and Posada and Petitte might retire. That's pretty disastrous for the team.As for MLB, I want to see those names in the Mitchell report.

easy

let's just hope they don't trade Joba for a 38 year old 'name' pitcher.

"The more I study science, the more I believe in God."     Einstein

Ha!

I think Tom Glavine's available...

Go Mountaineers

My WVU Mountaineers play today so I hope we win big time.I saw that on thursday that Rutgers beat USF that is good for WVU then we might Win the Big East.

Go WVU

Never vote for Byrd

Let's Go Mountaineers

I hoping the Pat White is good to go for today's game.   I would love to see a great game from him Slaton and Schmitt.

I heard

That he can run but hurts when he throws,I hope so to.how many helmets do you think Schmitt will break this week.

Go WVU

Never vote for Byrd

Two helmet game

I say a two helmet game.

Do you think

Slaton or White will win the Heisman this year

Go WVU

Never vote for Byrd

Go Neers!

Go Neers!

Bama

Wow, watching the Bama/TN pre-game show...they just announced that the Crimson Tide suspended five players for "illegal receipt of textbooks".

How bizarre.

Oh....and Joe Namath is there....he looks ancient.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

It ain't the age,

it's the mileage. And Joe Willie's got a right-smart of both.

Illegal receipt of

Illegal receipt of textbooks? What, are Bama players supposed to not study during football season? That is just a little confusing.

"A communist is someone who reads Marx. An anti-communist is someone who understands Marx." Ronald Reagan

Blonde,

LOL-At least they actually got textbooks.

As much as I'd like to see

As much as I'd like to see FL go down again,  I think the OT with LSU will have taken too much out of KY.

Whaddya mean IL will beat Michigan?  I live here, but you have to remember it IS Illinois, home of the apropriately-named Dick Durbin and a team coached by Ron "I-know-it's-fourth-down-but-I'll-still-take-the-penalty-and-give-Iowa-another-chance-to-score-TWICE" Zook (who's admittedly done a great job here).  It'll either be Illinois 23-22 or Michigan 49-7.

I hope President Thompson will prosecute the Congressional traitors.  Someone needs to.

Enjoy Ron Zook

Cuz I'm so glad he's in my rear-view mirror.

Urban Renewal.

California, USC, Washington, Florida, Alabama

The way this season has gone, those 5 will win handily today.

Seriously, Cal will bounce back, win out, and that 1 loss won't keep them out of the BCS Title game.

The Upset Special is in Seattle.

The Bears excel at the role

The Bears excel at the role of spoiler… but when the potential of gridiron greatness comes their way…. dammit.

Heartbreaking

Heartbreaking is the word.

Longshore's last two interceptions were the worst throws I've ever seen him make.

Just like the OSU game, they HAD it and let it slip. DAMN.

The Huskies sure looked good for 3 quarters, but, just like their earlier games, they don't have the depth to take the fight into the 4th. My attorney's cousin had an interception against Locker that killed one UW scoring threat.

Oh, well, I'm going to start rooting for an Oklahoma-LSU title game. Oh-how-I-Hate-Ohio State hasn't shown that they deserve it.

 Hook 'em

 Hook 'em

Holy crap. My Pitt Panthers

Holy crap. My Pitt Panthers just beat Cincy, the first ranked team they have beaten in three years. Dave Wanstadt's job may just have might been saved today.

Hey Rog

Why would you want Wandstadt to hang around? He has been a loser every other place he has been. Just like Norv Turner.

Do you think the Pirates will try for Torre?

Southern by birth, Tarheel by the grace of God!

OK Blonde I give

I think KY needs to yell uncle, lick their wounds, and get ready for next week. I don't know what the Gators did during the off week but it is working. With the loss of Stevie's boys, looks like you are on your way to Atlanta for the SEC championship game. You really need to send a thank you note to Vandy.

I listened to the Bama broadcast on Sirius. You were right again. Phat Phil headed for the unemployement line. By the way, I'd rank Eli Gold just a bit below Larry Munson on play by play.

Even though I have been wrong all day, I am still sticking by my prediction that Auburn beats LSU.

Southern by birth, Tarheel by the grace of God!

Well Rick,

What a difference a half hour makes.

These Gators of mine are giving me a heart attack.  Seriously, I'm having a hard time watching.  Two dropped passes in the end zone!!!  What was up with that?

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

well B

they could have locked it up with a stop on 4th down but a 14 point lead with 8 minutes to go isn't too bad.  Still having it on UKs 30 would be better than their own 13.

"The more I study science, the more I believe in God."     Einstein

B,

Well, THAT was exciting.  And not in a great way.

Defense looks great one play, very suspect the next.

But Timmy Tebow is a force of nature.  Good grief!    It took six players to take him down in the first half.  I've never seen anything like him before.

Urby needs to play Harvin more...this week will be a back to the drawing board week.  Hello Dawgs!

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

B

welcome back to the top 10

now }:- will need to keep winning to get there too

"The more I study science, the more I believe in God."     Einstein

Thanks Bruce,

The Top 10 is not my concern.  Welcome back to the driver's seat in the SEC East is far, far better.

I owe the Vandy team a huge debt of gratitude.  Vandy beat Mr. Superior today....Woo Hoo Vandy!  And thanks!  Gators are in control of their own destiny, if they can fix the stupid stuff.   Which was on full display, today.

}:- should be able to do it too!

And last, but certainly not least....sorry Noel.  That was a tough one.  I know EXACTLY how THAT feels.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

yer welcome

and they both have to re-visit their loses to get there:

UF vs LSU and UT vs OU

"The more I study science, the more I believe in God."     Einstein

Bruce,

The way it works in the SEC....we'll probably have the same record as TN & KY....(presuming we win out)....so the tie becomes the head to head records.

So, if my beloved Gators win GA, SC, & Vandy (about an 85% thing right now)....we are the SEC East Champs.  Big game goes to Florida by default, particularly since we usually lose to the SEC West champ during the regular season.  (Revenge is sweet).  After that...it's all luck.

Obviously, I don't think my Gators are National Championship contenders (I never did think a repeat was possible this year)....but with the way the upsets are going....anything is possible.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Blonde...your gratitude

Blonde...your gratitude is nice, but we'd really prefer a few of your state's blue chippers.  See what you can do...okay?

Jer

Congrats on the Gators win, Blonde.

If LSU loses to Auburn tonight, things are going to get a little interesting in this corner of the country.

Looking forward to next week.

Thanks Dave

My breathing has about returned to normal.

I may actually watch that game tonite....don't know who I prefer, actually.  Well...gotta go w/LSU....I picked them as the National Champs this year before the season started.

Care to place any bets for the cocktail party next week?

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

B guaranteed

the Tigers will win

"The more I study science, the more I believe in God."     Einstein

Very funny, botg.

LOL.

Yeah, B.

But which ones?

I should bet on the Orange & Blue ones (well, you know, because I have the wardrobe thing going on)....but I have to go with the Mardi Gras colored tigers.

Where are you danbo?

I think I'm losing my mind today.  Seriously.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

The Tigers aren't playing in

The Tigers aren't playing in the cocktail party.
Also botg, I liked your Nolan Ryan versus Sandy Koufax matchup. I'd take Koufax in that one. He doesn't walk as many as Ryan and had a much better ERA. Now how about Koufax versus Bob Gibson? Wow, wouldn't that be cool.

Koufax Gibson

would be decided by a third deck HR by Reggie in the 8th off a reliver before Sparky Lyle gets the save

Koufax was a Dodger, so I'm

Koufax was a Dodger, so I'm thinking Kirk Gibson would come up to bat in the bottom of the 9th and face Eckersly.  Gibson's legs are shot though, and he won't be able to run.  The only chance will be if Gibson hits a homer.  Who do like in that matchup?

Blonde, I'm pulling for LSU, as well.

As for the game next week, that's a really tough call. The Dawgs usually play well on the road, but they usually lose to you guys. Id say it's too close to call.

As for a wager on the outcome, I'll have to think about that some.

Dave how about a new Weber

Dave how about a new Weber Grill for the wager with all the beef you could eat for a year? Or maybe a gas grill, because I think I heard gas was as good as charcoal.

"I've always been crazy, but it's kept me from going insane"  Waylon Jennings

Karl,

LOL-I got more Webers sitting around here than I can shake a stick at.

As for one o' them newfangled (gulp) gas thingys with actual knobs, I might go that way when I am too old and feeble to lift the charcoal bags out of my trunk. :-)

Okay Dave

We're both pulling for the Mardi Gras colored Tigers.

But next week....hmmmm.  I'm thinking a really nice dinner in one of Atlanta's better restaurants as the wager?  I'm sure I'll be there in the next several times in the next six months.

Kentucky tried to break a 20 game losing streak today (see, I'm starting to feel better, my blood pressure is almost back to normal, LOL).

What says you, Dave R?

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Okay, Blonde, you're on. The dinner tab will be the wager.

Assuming, of course, that we haven't run out of water here by then. Hard on the restaurant bizz, ya know. LOL.

K Dave.

If ya'll run out of water in Atlanta...I know a restaurant here in Ft. Lauderdale where they serve shrimp the size of kittens.

David Gregory, do you know which damn network you lie for? ~ Uncle Jimbo, @Blackfive

Shrimp the size of kittens? Mmmmmmm. I love shrimp.

And should we run out of water here, I will find a way down there.

But they can leave the heads on, as I prefer them that way. Head-on shrimp, like bone-in steaks, are always better.
