HBO's Bill Maher is in trouble with the extreme left-wing of this nation - which, coincidently, represents the vast majority of his fan-base! - for refusing to believe the Bush administration had anything to do with taking down the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
In fact, last month on "Real Time," he dedicated an entire "New Rule" to this matter stating, "Crazy people who still think the government brought down the Twin Towers in a controlled explosion have to stop pretending that I'm the one that's being naïve."
On Friday's "Real Time," the Truthers struck back by infiltrating his audience, and interrupting the show for several minutes. The fracas resulted in Maher actually going into the crowd several times to assist security in removing the offending parties, and finally saying (video available here courtesy our dear friend Ms Underestimated, viewers are forewarned about the presence of vulgarity):
You know what that's all about? Of all the things I've said, and, believe me, I've said a lot of things as you all know that could get my head on a block. The one that they protest about out here is the people who think that the World Trade Center was a controlled explosion. You see, in that instance, I'm actually defending President Bush. I don't think President Bush brought down the World Trade Center. (Sounds of booing from the audience.) And cows disagree with me!
Well, the reality is, Bill, that though your view of this matter is for a change correct, by consistently taking extremely hostile positions towards President Bush, you have catered to the very folks who believe this absurd conspiracy theory, and have deservedly brought this wrath upon yourself.

Your analysis of the dumbing down of Bill Maher, and his show, is quite good Noel. It's interesting, as there have been a number of areas over the past few years where Maher has shown that he owns a number of solid and sensible view points on a litany of hot topics, yet he continues slip back into unconsciousness and allows these nuts to come on and spin ridiculous lies and conspiracy theories - all to the pleasure of the paying crowd and for the purpose of lining his own pockets with the dirty money.

This 'sound' has been played on a few cable shows and I think he believes he can make it a trademark of himself. Maher is losing control of his show. Several times in the past weeks he has had guests on who strayed from his Bush and/or America bashing leading questions. When this happens, Maher gets a confused look on his face and is speechless for several seconds while he trys to come up with a different approach to get the guest to go along with the bash of the moment, usually with no success. As weeks pass, the body count in Iraq falls, the democrats continue to make total fools of themselves, shows like this will begin to fade into obscurity. Maher needs to find himself a cute guy who he can join in a never-ending drug and sex binge.

It's interesting, Maher and Dennis Miller had almost identical acts as standups. They were both anti-authority, anti-government.
