National Association of Black Journalists Wants Imus Kept Off The Air

Photo of Noel Sheppard.

Just when you thought it was safe to turn on your radio again, a major media advocate has issued a strong warning to companies thinking about hiring Don Imus: Don't you dare!

For those that have been out of the country since the beginning of the year, one of the original shock-jocks got himself in trouble in April when he referred to the Rutgers women's basketball team as "nappy-headed hos."

After being fired by CBS Radio and NBC, Imus has been mounting a comeback, and is in serious talks with two leading radio outlets.

Unfortunately, as measured by its press release Tuesday, the National Association of Black Journalists isn't pleased (emphasis added throughout, h/t Dan Gainor):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

The National Association of Black Journalists urges Citadel Broadcasting chief executive Farid Suleman to halt negotiations to return former radio personality Don Imus to the airwaves.

A similar request was made early today of Fox Chairman Roger Ailes. However, NABJ has learned Fox News is backing away from any association with Imus.

[...]

"NABJ remains outraged after the racially inflammatory insults made by Don Imus last spring. He used his free speech to broadcast hate speech. To put him back on the air now makes light of his serious and offensive racial remarks that are still ringing in the ears of people all over this country," said Barbara Ciara, NABJ president.

"It seems inconceivable that less than a year after Imus was dismissed from CBS Radio and MSNBC for his vicious insults upon the Rutgers women's basketball team, that Citadel Broadcasting would consider putting him back on the air," said Ernie Suggs, NABJ's Vice President of Print.

NABJ questions why any responsible broadcast company would give Imus a forum to continue his history of racial insults on his program. Citadel Broadcasting owns 243 radio stations including ABC Radio Networks, and powerhouse radio station WABC in New York.

"It is our hope that Citadel Broadcasting will put decency and good broadcast practices ahead of a dysfunctional alliance," Ciara added.

NABJ appreciates the swift action from CBS radio, NBC and its cable channel MSNBC in condemning Imus' remarks and removing him from the airwaves six months ago, and now hopes Citadel Broadcasting will do the right thing and break off negotiations with the incendiary host.

Makes one wonder where this organization is concerning radio and television stations broadcasting hate-speech by rappers, and whether they've strongly spoken out for such "musicians" to be similarly banned from the airwaves.

While I'm searching for such press releases, I'll also look for condemnations by the NABJ of journalists that have racially attacked Justice Clarence Thomas, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell, and other black conservatives whose civil rights aren't typically the concern of such organizations.

Of course, it would also be interesting to see how this group responded to Fox News's Juan Williams recently being called a "happy Negro" by Boyce Watkins.

Stay tuned.

Free Speech

I don't like Imus all that much, but he didn't break any laws that I know of....

He is a victim of fascist oppression.

He didn't break any laws.  But his rights are being threatened - by a bunch of "open-minded" "Liberals" no less...

Imus

Now you know the origin of the word blackball.

This just proves that

This just proves that liberals believe in free speech, as long as they get to decide who "crosses the line."

It didn't take Al Sharpton long to "bounce back" after the Tawana Brawley thing. When Jesse Jackson was caught cheating on his wife with a staffer, he "withdrew" from public life for....how long....one weekend was it???

But for Don Imus, there is no end to his punishment.

I never listened to Imus and really don't care if he has a show or not. I just hate it when certain people get to make the rules for everyone else.

OK...

And why is it relevant what this crew thinks?

I'd like to know what the National Association of Viking Journalists/Pillagers think.

And what is the stance of the National Association of Guys who Write Articles for Newspapers in Myanmar

And because they are a black  "official group" with a "title" that means they get to SAY!!!

Sheesh!

Oh yeah.

I keep forgetting that we have this perennial under-dog class in our society that needs to be maintained and enabled.

What was I thinking?

Poor Imus (I don't even

Poor Imus (I don't even like the guy, but he has rights too), he'll have a hard time beating the professional victim 'African American' race baiters. A divisive bunch, they are. Imagine if every ethnicity insisted on being pigeonholed and addressed as such, instead of enjoying being Americans and living their lives.

Instead of worrying about

Instead of worrying about what a grumpy old man says, if this group wants to help their fellow African-Americans, they should worry not about Imus but rather spend their time and effort doing something about the high African-American dropout rate, illiteracy, and black kids growing up without fathers. Where's the outrage? Which is the bigger problem in society - "a ringing in the ears" or a 17 year-old dropout who can't read and write? What are any African-American leaders doing about these problems? Nothing; instead they want to play Big Brother and sic the Thought Police on Imus.

I see a red door and I want to paint it grey.

I never knew there was a NATIONAL Association of BLACK journalist. Sounds like segregation to me. Of course this is just a random thought from one of creations multi-culturist.

NABJ questions why any

NABJ questions why any responsible broadcast company would give Imus a

I've already said I don't listen to Imus, but I wonder: if Imus has a history of racial insults, and they know this, why did it take them so long to get him off the air? For how many years was he making "racial insults" and why was this one remark the straw that broke the camel's back?

What's wrong with this picture?

I realize that we're all on the same page here (except for maybe Leon and Balboa) but I have to say that the hypocracy of the concept is illogical to the point of migraine-inducing:

The National Association of Black Journalists (a totally racist concept) is concerned with Imus's (alleged) history of racial insults.

It just makes one weep with the effort of processing the thought.

Facts

One's pet has no racial discretions, it judges it's owner by how it is treated.

Why would society react differently?

When I read this my first reflection was the libs effort to exploit 'disadvantaged' children for political purposes. Without facts to eliminate Mr Imus they relied on smear and lies. Mr Imus is nothing more than a foundation to build upon. As we have seen, the conservatives are in focus.

You're absolutely right,

You're absolutely right, Helen. Segregation is OK, if blacks choose it. For instance, many colleges now have a "black" dormitory; and it's at the request of the black students. Some colleges also have a separate "black" graduation ceremony (no whites allowed)..again, at their insistence. So you see, they are allowed to segregate themselves and discriminate against whites if they so choose.

You're also right that it boggles the mind.

Fairness?

Why not get opinions from the NAWJ on this subject to add a little balance. Oops, I let the cat out of the bag. Now everyone will know there is a RACIST group of the National Association of White Journalists in existence.

what is a "white

what is a "white journalist...?!"

A service of the new NB respect police

Answer for TM

A white 'journalist' is a self loathing, America hating, pacifist, mushy, superficial blow hard who thinks they can apologize on behalf of all other white folks for succeeding in life. I think that about covers it.

The American Revolution Continued

white on, bro!

gotcha

but are they literally white?

and what is a "white folk?"

A service of the new NB respect police

Not all inclusive

You are describing only white journalists who work for CNN, MSDNC, and the MSM, but your description is beyond accurate.

they all look tan to

they all look tan to me

Double standards

And yet Obermanns is given a pass on this?

so why not do it

so why not do it again:)!?

We did

But mysteriously, the news media didn't. Why do you suppose that was, Bal??

Heh...I like Bal.

I think he was joking in that uncomfortable, "I know you're right, but I'd prefer not to say it at the moment, but nice bias-bust, sarc" way. At least, that's how I read Bal's joke.

I expose & then mock double-standards on the left and on the right. I've done it for decades, so I have a bit of experience in this area. Bal's reaction with a joke was a mild one for this kind of nailing. Please believe me when I tell you that I'm used to far-worse than a mere admission-joke when I do this....

New Group

I have just started the National Association of Retired White Journalists and we want those racists Al "Tawana" Sharpton and Jesse "Hymietown" Jackson kept off the air.

I'm more of a light tan

I'm more of a light tan color - can i still join?

A service of the new NB respect police

Absolutely!

then can we call it "white

then can we call it "white or tan" jounalists...?

A service of the new NB respect police

How about

How about we just call it caucasian journalists. That'll take care of the "tannies" ;).

tannies sounds kind of

tannies sounds kind of racist to me

unless maybe a tannie says it to another tannie

what about scandinavian-american instead? no that doesnt cover everyone...

I hear the lib archeologists say that that original humans were in africa - that would make everyone in the world african-something, all americans would be therefore be "african americans"

but im still a tannie

Vikies

I believe the scandiavian-american are called Vikings. I think you can make word sound like racism by adding a y or ie to the end of a group.

That said I'm a whitey.

yer right! works for

yer right! works for religion bigots too - im a "fundie"

Ummm...

What about a tannish shade of pink on a Viking-American born and raised in Africa?

Would I qualify for the Pinkish-Tannish-White-Viking-African-American non-journalist (but know one personally)?

Those damn caucasion

Those damn caucasion "tannies"!!  We don't take kindly to those type around here.  Skeeter??? (inside Southpark joke)

A couple of things…  1)

A couple of things…

 1)  NABJ needs to update its name to National Association of African American Journalists.  (Or at least Willie Geist would think their use of the word “Black” is dated.)

2)  Hillary’s allies should be happy to help the NABJ block the Imus return to radio.  After all, it was one of her interns at Media Matters who monitored the Imus program and sounded the alarm/highlighted his comments (intern story from one of Noel Sheppard’s pieces last week… sorry no link).  On the other hand, members of the MSM might hesitate to come out against Imus… if he does return, Imus would surely have some things to say about his critics.  Waiting to see who openly comes out in support of the NABJ....

Articles like this make me

Articles like this make me upset.  For the last 50 years, America has worked hard for equality between blacks and whites.  The good news is that a lot of that hard work has paid off.  The bad news is that organizations that earned their reputation through the civil rights era now have nothing to do but *create* inequalities so they can remain in existence.  Imus should have NEVER been fired.  The way he was and has been treated through this whole ordeal is IN FACT a "public lynching".

MostlyM, I agree with

MostlyM, I agree with you.  The Revs Sharpton and Jackson are race baiters who line their own pockets by pushing dependency.  I don’t believe Don Imus is a racist… his comments were lazy (he hadn’t prepared for the show so he just threw something against the wall) and cruel… like calling someone fat and/or ugly and/or stupid, and the girls on the basketball team were innocents.  An apology was essential, and an apology was made.  Continuing to prey on “white guilt” is a cheap control tactic that draws in far too many fools.

Anyone who doesn’t care for Don Imus shouldn’t listen.  Personally, I would like to hear what he has to say about his recent demise… the role of Hillary Clinton/Media Matters and the support or lack of support that was forthcoming from the members of the MSM who regularly flogged their books on his show.

}}---> Racists

Jesse shook down Toyota preying on a perception that the Japanese are extremely conscious of "saving face"

Sharpton immediately sided with Tawana Brawley because of a belief White men are liars.

Jackson's on H&C tonight demanding Swastikas and nooses be considered "hate crimes".  I think there's a case to be made they can be prosecuted as threats of bodily harm, but I'm thinking the Government , in its White guilt, will acquiesce to Jackson's demand eventually.

~LYDSEXICS UNTIE!~

Wouldn’t it be nice if

Wouldn’t it be nice if Hannity and O’Reilly lost the Two Rev’s telephone numbers?  They are given too many opportunities to spread their self-serving opinions.

}}---> Oh maggie, maggie, maggie

Maybe we're just a little bit jaded.

Isn't it possible Jackson and Sharpton long for a day like that described by Martin Luther King Jr?

OK, I kept a straight face as long as I could.

~LYDSEXICS UNTIE!~

Those two are more into

Those two are more into creating the day of infamy…

Journalists?

Apparently, they don't teach Black journalists about the 1st Amendment. Apparently, if you screw up, on the radio, apologize, and even go on Sharpton's show and eat a big piece of humble pie, it's not enough for these "journalists".

I can't help but wonder where journalism is going to go from here.  I hope Noel posts all those condemnations soon, so I can have some hope that all is not lost.
