NYT’s Environmental Writer Paid $12,500 to Speak About Global Warming

NewsBusters readers are aware that one of my contentions concerning global warming alarmism is that those involved are doing it for the money.

Well, this editorial from the Olympian in Washington state will give you an idea that it's not just folks like Al Gore, Laurie David, and carbon offset marketers that are cashing in on this scam.

Now, media members are getting into the act as well.

Entitled "Climate Change Event Mishandled," the editorial deliciously complained about the Olympia, Washington, City Council paying a speaking fee to Andrew Revkin of the New York Times (emphasis added):

Yes, climate change is an important issue. And, yes, public education on the impacts of global warming to South Sound and what residents can do to minimize their individual impact is important. But what's really galling is the fact that the two speakers, Andrew Revkin, author and environmental writer for The New York Times and Terry Tempest Williams, a naturalist and author, are not even going to take questions from the audience.

Wouldn't a video conference have been more environmentally conscious?

Each speaker will receive $12,500 plus travel and lodging costs for their 30-minute presentation - about $435 per minute - and South Sound residents don't even get to have their questions answered.

Hardly seems right, does it?

No, it doesn't. Yet, what it demonstrates is that there's a lot of money in global warming, and all those involved in advancing the hysteria are looking for their payday just like Al Gore.

After all, you didn't really think this was about saving the planet, did you?

You did? Ahhhhh...how sweet.

FOLLOW THE MONEY!!!

It's all about jumping on a current "hot topic" and making your money at as many speaking engagements as possible.

Climeat change??!!! The climate is constantly changing. Look at any climate chart for any period of time and you will see continuous change.

Might as well pay people to talk about the crisis in "value change" in the stock market.

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Fred08.com

$435.00 per minute for pure B.S.

Wow...I am in the wrong business.

Seriously this is outrageous.

It will take the people to get outraged, I do not think it will happen with the leftist who want to believe lies and have a cause...any cause, plus be glad to pay for it and pay others.

What a scam.

I just hope we get enough conservatives elected plus a President with an 'R' behind their name so we all are not forced to pay for this scam, sham whatever name you want to apply...because we will if the leftist get enough of a majority.

Ahhhhhhh, Tax dollars hard

Ahhhhhhh, Tax dollars hard at work.

How do we turn it around?

I agree that it's outrageous that biased reporters like Revkin are being paid huge sums to further misinform American citizens.  But how do we begin to reverse course?  Every day it seems there's another new "study" to promote alarmism.  Even the normally respectable History Channel is getting in on the hype tonight by airing a Megadisaster sci-fi thriller on the great glacial meltdown.  Gimme a break!

I don't know the answer to my question, but I would offer a starting point.  I think most people accept the fact that climate is changing (it always has).  Maybe we can also agree that human activity is contributing to that change thru land use changes, urbanization, deforestation, and yes, greenhouse gas emissions.

However, policymakers have focused on just carbon dioxide emissions, which conveniently fit the environmental extremist agenda to eliminate the use of fossil fuels.  What people need to understand is that human activity is only a fraction of the "problem," and that carbon emissions are just a small fraction of that.

If we can just get that one point across, I believe citizens will begin to question the ridiculously expensive global warming "solutions" being proposed in Washington and around the globe.

Noel

it does seem hypocritical to burn jet fuel while complaining about AGW.  Then again Andy has come here before and been a tad willing to exchange ideas.  Perhaps he will 'splain.

Yes, you are even more annoying than Blonde.  the EYE

Noel, I admire the fact you

Noel, I admire the fact you make me think about the articles you post, however as usual, your picture has inspired another new cliche';

"Fooled as a Four Dollar Bill"

I think this is fitting for the moron's that pay for their carbon offsets to feel "good" about doing the right thing toward the environment.

"Too bad Ignorance isn't painful..."

Let's see

All I have to do is show up at the event and lend my name to the talking points and collect a cool $12,000?  What's the downside to that?  My character?

Character doesn't pay quick dividends like this.

Besides, lacking any true insight into the scientific nature of the discourse, all I have to say is F^#K Bush, and I'm off the stage to thundrous applause.

One thing

One thing to keep in mind is that this is Olympia, Washington, home of The Evergreen State College -- a place that makes Berkeley look positively conservative.
