A respected member of the blogging community who also happened to be serving our nation was killed in Iraq Wednesday.
Frank Salvato, editor of The New Media Journal, sadly e-mailed his readers:
It is with a very heavy heart and swollen eyes from the tears that I inform you all that one of our fellow writers, Sgt. Eddie Jeffers who was serving in Ramadi, Iraq, was killed today. He was patriot, humble, kind and dedicated to his mission, his country, his family and his faith.
Many of you might be familiar with Sgt. Jeffers's piece "Hope Rides Alone" posted on February 1, 2007:
But even thousands of miles away, in Ramadi, Iraq, the cries and screams and complaints of the ungrateful reach me. In a year, I will be thrust back into society from a life and mentality that doesn't fit your average man. And then, I will be alone. And then, I will walk down the streets of America, and see the yellow ribbon stickers on the cars of the same people who compare our President to Hitler.
I will watch the television and watch the Cindy Sheehans, and the Al Frankens, and the rest of the ignorant sheep of America spout off their mouths about a subject they know nothing about. It is their right, however, and it is a right that is defended by hundreds of thousands of boys and girls scattered across the world, far from home. I use the word boys and girls, because that's what they are. In the Army, the average age of the infantryman is nineteen years old. The average rank of soldiers killed in action is Private First Class.
This piece was so popular that Fox News's Bill O'Reilly reported it (audio available here).
If you hadn't seen this spectacular article before, please do yourself a favor and read the entire thing.
Moving forward, according to Salvato:
[Sgt. Jeffers] was a humble kid. He thought it was huge that we published him and his Dad even said he admired those of us who do this. Go figure. Here's a kid clearing houses in Ramadi in the bad days admiring those of us sitting back here in air conditioned rooms typing.
He was married and he was slated to come home, I believe for the holidays. He died at 7am this morning in an accidental vehicle roll-over as his group was traveling to fight the bad guys. Just like Patton, I guess.
He was Evangelical and devout. He was always looking out for his men, checking on them, caring about them, making sure they were ready for battle. He was a good leader and took his gig seriously.
Most of all, he believed in his mission. Believed in the war effort and couldn't fathom the mindset of Murtha, Reid, Pelosi and Kennedy. He was worried that when he came home he wouldn't recognize the country he was fighting for.
Some of us share his concern regarding recognizing the country he was fighting for, and will take a moment to say a prayer for him and his family.
Sgt. Jeffers was only 23.
For those interested, Jeffers also published "Real Deal in Ramadi" back in April.

An unpayable gratitude to Sgt. Jeffers for fighting both wars, sometimes one enemy worse than the other ... And unpayable gratitude to his family.
To fallen soldiers let us sing
Where no rockets fly nor bullets wing
Our broken brothers let us bring
To the Mansions of the Lord
No more bleeding, no more fight
No prayers pleading through the night
Just divine embrace, eternal light
To the Mansions of the Lord.
Where no mothers cry and no children weep
We will stand and guard though the angels sleep
Through the ages safely keep
The Mansions of the Lord.

On a different note
September 20, 2007 - 13:21 ET by Lame CherrySince this posting was about blogging, I will instead of marking the space with the typical sympathies touch upon a subject which the military and Americans had better get a handle on and that is the problems with a blogging military.
This soldier did have a following like all soldiers do who go public whether a liar like Beauchamp or a patriot like Jeffers. Followings mean publicity and fame. This type of gung ho really screws up a combat unit which spreads to the entire military as soon missions are geared to "we can't have this soldier put in harms way as it will have a negative impact on the war".......which means other "lesser soldiers" will get sent out on missions and end up KIA.
This all becomes then an endless "saving private ryan propaganda" which gets more soldiers killed and not less, along with hard feelings in units where one's fame gets you trail detail while somebody else rides point.
Into this "fame" of course comes like in Stars & Stripes when they feature articles like in Vietnam about Gunny Hathcock the greatest sniper in world history a bounty placed on certain soldiers to be murdered by the enemy. The last thing soldiers need in units are to have glam soldiers who are tracked and draw fire getting entire units massacred to get the "famous blogger".
General Patton spoke of this "fame" being the worst kind of thing in the military. He instituted a policy which refused active duty to Congressional Medal recipients, because every time they would try to out do what they survived and the enemy ended up killing them which hurt US morale.
For that reason this soldier blogger here am I completely against it. It has caused Abu Gahrib to this miserable traitor Beauchamp. (As a real note, 2 soldiers in the 1880's returned to camp reporting a unit had been killed by Indians which was a lie and they were court martialled to hard time in Leavenworth, the same should be fitting to Beauchamp.) Allot of people are dead from blogging and the last thing America needs from soldiers is the blogger soldier, gaining fame and following and causing more harm to the war effort.
If a soldier wants to write, let them write as countless have done in journals and when the war is done let them publish them after no one is being killed. Soldiers are being paid for combat and not expression in writing no matter if it is pro American or traitorous rants.
I mean none of this harsh for Sgt. Jeffers nor his family, but these issues are going to have to be dealt with or the next thing it is going to be "Soldier UTube" with stars leading policy beyond what the elected government has voted for........and the last thing America needs in that is General Strangelove with nuclear bombers doing his show against ratings tycoon Admiral Strangehate with nuclear subs with groupie followings trying to out do the other.
The military has one purpose and that is to speak with munitions and have only silent voices beyond YES SIR. Keep the military this way or kids are going to die as targets for propaganda or America is going to have Corporal Paperhanger dictating policy to the elected government in a coup.
God bless America.

September 20, 2007 - 13:31 ET by misterbillI kind of wish---I didn't sign in today. It's hard to explain, but reading about Sergeant Eddie hit me and hit me hard. I had to go back to read what he wrote, because , I have read so much about the war and so many other posts that I needed to refresh myself.
There's a feeling that comes with age that enhances one's appreciation for the gift of life. This gift, almost always, comes with wrappings of love and affection, right from birth; and grows, as the young person does, through the years. Friends are made. accomplishments achieved, families are made proud, all these things. And this love is given back by young men like Eddie Jeffers. They are the hope of America. They love and respect the land that gave them birth. They are righteously angry at anyone or anything that threatens the well-being of those they love and the country that they protect. They put themselves in harm's way to do what righteous young men have done for this country since it was founded.
Eddie, I did not know you personally, but I sit here with tears running down my face. I wish I had known you personally, but I don't know if the pain would be any greater, if I had. I think of your parents and there is even more pain. May God comfort them in this sad time of their loss. Eddie, their loss is America's loss. I am grateful for my spiritual beliefs that tell me you are in God's hands now.
As I pray for you, I also thank you for giving the most precious thing that a person can give. May God grant you eternal rest.
Eddie Jeffers, Thank you,

Going home, going home
I'm just going home
Quiet light, some still day
I'm just going home
It's not far, just close by
Through an open door
Work all done, care laid by
Going to fear no more
Mother's there expecting me
Father's waiting, too
Lots of folk gathered there
All the friends I knew
All the friends I knew
I'm going home
Nothing's lost, all's gain
No more fret nor pain
No more stumbling on the way
No more longing for the day
Going to roam no more
Morning star lights the way
Restless dream all done
Shadows gone, break of day
Real life begun
There's no break, there's no end
Just a living on
Wide awake with a smile
Going on and on
Going home, going home
I'm just going home
It's not far, just close by
Through an open door
I am going home
I'm just going home
Going home, going home
going home, going home

Yes ultimately I want the troops out of Iraq, but not until the Iraqis can stand on their own. I support a PHASED withdrawal to give the Iraqis a kick start to gaining their own indepence. Force them to not be lazy and make it work. So long as we have tons of troops there they will continue to depend on us.
So I support a slow withdrawal whereby Iraq can slowly become independent of our support.

In all decency, couldn't you have brought this issue up elsewhere so that the Jeffers family didn't have to witness it in their hour of grief?
Furthermore, I really wish others here would have shown some reverence and self-control by just ignoring your post. Sometimes the decent thing to do is say nothing and walk away. JMHO. ns
