Want to stir up mass hysteria over the liberal bogeyman known as global warming?
How about publishing computer-generated pictures of American cities drowned as a result of rising sea levels?
Think that will do the trick?
Well, that's exactly what ABC News.com did Friday with a photo essay featured on the site's front page entitled "Photos: What Global Warming Looks Like."
Here's Atlantic City under 1.5 meters of water supposedly in the year 2100:
This is Boston under three meters of water:
This is Manhattan:
For the entire disgraceful essay, go here.
Honestly, folks, what won't media do to generate mass hysteria over a problem that has yet to be proven even exists?

The funniest thing about
September 14, 2007 - 17:52 ET by Del DolemonteThe funniest thing about this whole story is that everyone seems to forget that when they caught the guy with the camera, the score was 7-7. The Pats then went on to thoroughly thrash the Jets.
It was using the camera that was illegal, not the stealing of signals-every team does that. Denver's Mike Shanahan admitted to hiring a lip reader to find out what the other team was saying.
Point being, yes it was wrong, but honestly, teams change signals every game and by the time they were able to look at the video and attach the signals to the plays that were run, the game would be over.
Nonetheless, those who hate the Pats will continue to do so.

September 14, 2007 - 20:26 ET by Conservative_in_mass.True. There is quite a bit of cloak and dagger on NFL sidelines, no question about it. Probably goes for all Professional sports. I'm not a Pats fan, but I certainly respect what they have done with that franchise.
I was feeling some of Gats pain regarding the Jets. BTW that team will be one to be reckoned with; their Head coach Mangini (former Pats Defensive Coordinator) is every bit the genius Belichick is.
As for your closing comment, also true, usually the "hate" is combined with a touch of envy.

September 14, 2007 - 12:47 ET by BeowulfWhat else can they do? They've hitched their tired old horse to that wheel-less wagon, and now have no option but to go balls-to-the-wall. They made an extremely poor decision to endorse the Goracle, and now they are irrevocably tied to his game. Most of the proven leftist MSM were completely and smarmingly attached to this being Algor's opening bid for a presidential run.
My question is why are they being allowed to get away with such potentially devastating and fact-devoid sensationalism?

If sea levels rise, humans will adapt, and move. It's not like people will be sitting in their living rooms and be instantly overcome by rising sea levels.
The people that buy into these scare-tactics amuse me. Don't buy waterfront property. Don't live that close to sea level. There is so much land well above sea level in the U.S. (and around the world) that is currently not densely populated like much of our coastal areas.
I don't see what the big problem is. I thought most of the charm of Venice were it's canals and crusing around in gondolas and water buses.

September 14, 2007 - 13:15 ET by Dave in TexasThanks for posting that Noel. The captions on the photos are hilarious:
First, you have to look at the caption on photo 9 (Honolulu): "In a report issued earlier this year, the Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change ... said various warming scenarios could raise sea levels
anywhere from 7 to 23 inches."
And yet in all their "scary" photos, the amounts of sea level rise are way higher: 1 meter for Hollywood, Fl., 1.25 meters for Ft. Lauderdale, 1.5 meters for Atlantic city, 1.75 meters for Honolulu, and (yowza!) 3 meters for Boston. That last one is about 10 times the upper limit from the IPCC report.
And I loved the one for New Orleans: "This is what New Orleans would look like if the sea level rose 1 meter."
No. That's what New Orleans actually looked like when the sea levels didn't rise at all.
Texas Dave
September 14, 2007 - 13:50 ET by Gary HallNo Kidding -- here's the premise by ABC "News."
One would consider the 7" figure to be the IPCC's conservative estimate and the 23" figure to be their worst case (liberal) estimate.
But according to ABC, "many researchers..." Just who are these "many researchers?" Are not there many other researchers who feel (scientifically) that the panel's lower estimate is way too liberal? Oh, I'll answer that. Yes.
Dave, you noted the one meter vs. 23" aspect of the presentation. Actually, only one of the slides was 1 meter. Others were 3 meters, 8 feet (2.4 meters), etc. The average slide in ABC "News's presentation illustrated sea level rise of 2 meters, or 344% greater than the worst case scenario offered up by the soon to completely debunked IPCC, or as ABC sees it - the news. ha!

I was also amused by the inconsistent comparison of sea level increases between Atlantic City (1.5 meters) and Boston (3.0 meters). That is unless of course there are a couple of watery steps to climb as you work your way up the Eastern seaboard.

Notice they don't show downtown Seattle or the other metropolitan areas. That's because the waterfront is already built on piers that are over 3 meters above sea-level and much of downtown Seattle goes from sea-level (or the pier) to about 200 feet in elevation in less than a quater mile.

September 14, 2007 - 14:52 ET by CooltomFun facts about the Greenland icesheets:
"during the last period between ice ages, 116,000-130,000 years ago, when temperatures were on average 5 °C (9 °F) higher than now, the glaciers on Greenland did not completely melt away."
"About 81% of its surface is covered by ice, known as the Greenland ice sheet, the weight of which has depressed the central land area to form a basin lying more than 300 metres (984 ft) below the surrounding ocean. Approximately one-twentieth of the world's ice and one-quarter of the earth's surface ice is found in Greenland."

So, melted ice (which contracts in volume) will rise 300 meters to pour into the ocean. It is of course "settled science" that water runs uphill.

Good point
September 14, 2007 - 16:21 ET by windellmcI'd like to see the math on these predicted sea level rises. 2/3 of the earth is covered in water right? How much of the world's ice volume is locked up in glaciers that are sitting on land and not floating on the ocean? Anything floating has already raised sea level.
We could look at the reverse. How much ice has to melt to raise sea level 1m cross an area that covers 2/3 of the world? Is there even that much ice locked up on land? I'm not convinced these doomsday scenerios pass a basic logic test. This should not be a surprise considering the source of the GW hysteria.

September 14, 2007 - 20:33 ET by Conservative_in_mass.Sterm you are giving libs more ammo! The next logical progression of that line of thought is that all sea life also displaces water, thereby contributing to the rising sea levels. So I'm going to do my part, jump in my SUV and go out and have the twin lobster special at my local seafood haunt.
Two down, MAAAAANY more to go. Hey, we all have to do our little bit right?

There is that much ice
September 15, 2007 - 01:21 ET by cleverpigThere is that much ice locked up on land, these things have all been (hypothetically) calculated far beyond a "basic logic test." That is the specific reason why the Greenland ice sheet is of more concern than others-- it's a huge amount of ice that hasn't yet raised sea levels.
Incidentally, I think the basin is formed because there is such a huge mound of ice on top. Plenty of that could run happily downhill towards the ocean before Greenland became concave.

September 14, 2007 - 16:34 ET by MassConservativeIn the Boston picture it appears the rising waters take out most of Roxbury, Duxbury, Mattapan, and just for good measure a good portion of Cambridge.
Just proves to me that "the ocean hates black people" (and liberals).
I would love to see someone counter this with pictures showing the "maximum" rise projected by the beloved IPCC. A side by side picture showing Boston today and Boston with a rise of 23" of water would be priceless.

Yes, the rocks will rebound when the ice melts but it would take 1,000s of years. As one article said, "rocks aren't that flexible."
The oceans contain 97% of the Earths water. Antartica has 90% of the remainder, Greenland most of the rest, with little stored in inland lakes and glaciers. Not too sure about percentages for underground rivers and aquifers.

September 14, 2007 - 22:52 ET by BlondeI love the "underwater" picture of Ft. Lauderdale. Total fantasy....there would be a new inlet for the ocean....they just kind of blued the whole thing in...typical. Notice the downtown, though...it's still there, with the nice "Coral Ridge" (an actual name of a part of Ft. Lauderdale) right where it should be.

breaking news
September 14, 2007 - 23:04 ET by lunaticcringeradiothe endangered spotted owl has been found to be the biggest contributor now known to CO2 emmisions. apparently these little guys as rare as they are emit such high concentrated levels of CO2 that they can almost entirely be accounted for all of global warming. i say it's time to start hunting endangered spotted owls.
hey if they can make up crap i'm going to start trying to top them.

September 14, 2007 - 23:23 ET by SportPolitics" The images of cities under a layer of water in the Architecture 2030 report took a year to compile, using government elevation data combined with google earth maps. "
http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/popup?id=3599774&contentIndex=1&page=3
I go to their website, and see their report, it has a total of 31 images of cities.
http://www.architecture2030.org/current_situation/research/sea_level/naples_fl.html
I guess human productivity has gone down substantially. 31 pictures made by a computer, and it took a YEAR to do it. What a JOKE.
I know, it's supposed to make it sound important and difficult, that a whole year was spent...
I agree, democrats should be slaving away on hard concrete in manual labor factories instead of playing with computer pictures for a year.

I live near Atlantic City and these claims are nonsense
September 15, 2007 - 00:58 ET by PopularTechLooking at the Empirical Evidence:
Observed Changes in Sea Level (IPCC)
QUOTE (IPCC)
"Based on tide gauge data, the rate of global mean sea level rise during the
20th century is in the range 1.0 to 2.0 mm/yr. No significant
acceleration in the rate of sea level rise during the 20th century has
been detected."
Future Sea Level Rise and the New Jersey Coast (PDF) (Princeton University)
QUOTE (Princeton University)
"Averaging the mean values from the tide-gauges provides an approximate 20th
Century relative sea level rise trend of 3.53 mm/year, which is double
the global-mean. This implies a local component of approximately 2
mm/year for the New Jersey coast which can be partially attributed to
land subsidence and sediment compaction."
Apparent Sea-Level Rise Caused by Sediment Compaction (Geological Society of America)
QUOTE (Geological Society of America)
"A tide gage embedded above compacting sediment loses elevation, producing
a water level record that indicates apparent sea-level rise equal to
the loss in gage elevation. The USGS monitors subsidence in the marsh
behind Atlantic City using an extensometer that penetrates 320m of
section. Between 1980 and 2000, this extensometer measured 29mm of
vertical compaction (1.5mm/yr) at this site. The Atlantic City tide
gage rests above the same sedimentary section, plus surface sands
deposited in historic time. The compaction of buried and surficial
clastic sediment is an explanation for high apparent rates of sea-level
rise (about 4.0mm/yr) at Atlantic City, Sandy Hook, and Hampton. On the
Atlantic side of Florida, apparent rates of sea-level rise are
generally lower than those from the mid-Atlantic coast, probably
because historically recent calcium carbonate deposition in clastic
pore space strengthens the Florida sediment, reducing compaction."
It is simple logic to know that sediment compaction is not caused by Global Warming or man-made CO2. But lets do the math for a moment...
- Global average sea level based on tidal gauge data should rise 4-8 inches (1-2mm/yr) in 100 years. (IPCC)
Now using the Atlantic City tidal guage measurements of 3.53mm/yr that works out to:
- 13.8 inches of sea-level rise over 100 years.
- 1.5 meters of sea level rise would take 428 years.
Looks like ABC failed elementary school mathematics.
Empirical evidence doesn't support the hysteria.

So...
September 15, 2007 - 01:25 ET by cleverpigThat looks like it's all based on past data, extrapolating forward and assuming that rates stay the same. Isn't the whole point that we are worried the rates will increase?
Empirical Evidence vs Nonsense
September 15, 2007 - 02:17 ET by PopularTechExtrapolate this forward:
- No significant acceleration in the rate of sea level rise during the 20th century has been detected. (IPCC)
What is going to accelerate Sediment Compactation?

it's the algorithms they use that produce these fantasies
September 15, 2007 - 10:14 ET by lunaticcringeradiowhat they will never do is provide you the computer code that they use which would reveal the algorithms are skewed to multiply and feed off each other in a ravenous runaway unrealistic degree.

The fallacy behind the hype
September 15, 2007 - 11:34 ET by pbthinkerWhen looking through the pictures (I was trying to see if my kids will inherit waterfront property someday) this statement just struck me:
"Sea level rise of 3 feet by the end of this century may seem apocalyptic, but some leading scientists say it is a very real possibility. In a report issued earlier this year, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change -- it's made up of thousands of scientists from around the world -- said various warming scenarios could raise sea levels anywhere from 7 to 23 inches."
I find it amazing that they go from meters, to feet to inches in an effort to confuse people about what the report actually says. With Gore talking about a 20 ft. sea level rise and the IPCC talking about a 7-23 inch rise, here's ABC talking about a 36 inch rise or a meter, which is approx. 39 inches.
This is what the AGW people are left doing, since they can't justify their science they have to juxtapose figures to confuse those not following this issue.
Hopefully, most people have moved beyond the hype and will start looking for the facts.
