While Democrats, media, and far-left groups like MoveOn did their level best to smear the good name of Gen. David Petraeus this week, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) stood up on the Senate floor to state what most right-thinking Americans have been feeling.
Speaking specifically about the disgraceful advertisement published Monday in the New York Times referring to General "Betray Us," Hatch called these "dangerous and unwarranted allegations" emanating from MoveOn and other groups like it that "are called the nutroots of our society."
How delicious.
Don Surber caught this fabulous video from C-SPAN2. Transcript of the juicy section, beginning in the final 30 seconds, follows (video available here, h/t Hot Air):
Now, anyone who has had the opportunity to meet the General, and anybody who has bothered to follow his career or his academic pursuits, knows that these are dangerous and unwarranted allegations. However, there might be a silver lining to this slander. Libel, really, because it was printed The New York Times. Now, all of America understands MoveOn.org and other groups like it are called the nutroots of our society. These people are nuts and they don't care who they hurt, they don't care who they smear they don't care who they libel. Politics is more important than anything else and power is the most important anything of all.
Bravo, Senator.
Sadly, the same can be said of most liberal media members today who will do everything in their power to advance the Democrat agenda including reporting factual inaccuracies and boycotting stories which go counter to their ideology.
What a disgrace.

Admiration
September 13, 2007 - 10:34 ET by BeanManI have re-gained some of my former admiration for Senator Hatch.
The left, which includes Democrats, the MSM, and the "nutroots" such as the Daily Kos Krowd and Moveoniacs, remind me of the Whigs who were out of power in England during the reign of King Edward and wanted power (mostly to distribute the perks to their folks) so badly that they were willing to sabotage their own fighting generals and admirals who were fighting in the Colonies to put down that foolish American rebellion. They mostly stabbed General Cornwallis in the back which cost him at Yorktown.
Sad that the MSM et al are so willing to do this to us.
Thank you again Senator Hatch! He really should dump his good friend Ted Kennedy and hang with decent people again.

Petraeus Ad
September 13, 2007 - 13:13 ET by BourbeauIt's apparent that Moveon.org couldn't care less what anyone thinks about their insulting ad on Monday. However, the NY Times should have known better and we can't let them off the hook. I urge you to take a few minutes and let your voices be heard by sending an e-mail to the NY Times Public Editor at public@nytimes.com. General Petraeus handled himself admirably despite the ignorance of some legislators, the moveon.org crowd, and the NY Times. He deserves our support. Let the NY Times know we support him and reject what they did. General Petraeus is taking the battle to the terrorist in Iraq, at the very least, we can take the battle to the public editor at the NY Times. Please take a few minutes and be heard.
Sen. Hatch
September 13, 2007 - 14:14 ET by Tom in NCIt's about time, but lets not stop here. Every election I hear that we want to work with the democrats in a bi-partisan manner, and I say bull%#$t. It seems to me that the Republicans on Capital Hill would be tired of getting stabbed in the back in the name of bi-partisanship the democrats have no intention of working with us in any way or form, and I for one am getting tired of our lawmakers kowtowing to the likes of Pelosi, Reid, Kennedy and Kerry. Conservative ideology is far and away superior to the liberal nonsense that spews from these liberal and RINO nut-jobs, lets get back to conservative roots and start showing these liberals the door and give them a hearty push. We as Republicans have gained a reputation of being ladies and gentlemen that would rather compromise than engage in conflict but we no longer have that luxury, the battlefields are no longer just in Iraq and Afghanistan, but on the floors of Congress and we can not afford to be weak or take prisoners.

September 13, 2007 - 12:35 ET by TruthMonger...are the Repubs finally "growing a pair" as Rush so eloquently put it?
This has been happening alot over the last couple of weeks. Maybe I can vote Repub this fall after all...
I'll second that
September 13, 2007 - 10:39 ET by KC MulvilleBravo to Hatch, and a nod for when you call the liberal media a disgrace. I especially want to thank you for calling Hatch's speech to attention. The media will never cover it, and when they hide these speeches, it leaves the rest of us with the impression that no one in the senate reacts the same way we do. It's good to see proof that they're as outraged as we are.
he's right
September 13, 2007 - 10:45 ET by ksimm81And I find it utterly amazing that the Democrats in Congress feel they know what's best for our military more than General Patreus does.
Truly mind-boggling.

September 13, 2007 - 10:52 ET by LCT688For the far left and the Democrats that pander to them, the old concepts of being the "Loyal Opposition" and politics ending at the shore line are historical acronisms. Any viliany, any slander is acceptable so long as it's expediant to destroing those who might dare disagree with them of furthers their naked rasping for power. They would rather argue about the placement of the deck chairs than stear the ship of state away from the looming iceberg of self-destruction.

Bravo Hatch!
September 13, 2007 - 12:25 ET by SQL_SamAbout time a republican stands up on the floor and denounces these wackjobs - and about time. I'm all for the freedom of press and freedom of speech, it doesnt guarantee I will not be upset or mad at child-like/school yard behavior, but it is nice to see the freedom of speech can work both ways and call these people on their antics, just wish more republicans would grow a pair and fight back with strong words. as well. *sigh*
growing a pair
September 13, 2007 - 13:21 ET by ts88I don't think that anyone in Congress or in Senate would stand up and say a damm thing if not for groups like Newsbusters or Drudge. Lets hold their feet to the fire
Whenever I see something
September 13, 2007 - 15:38 ET by KhyrisWhenever I see something like this from a Rep or Senator, I make a point of emailing them and thanking them.
Most people only send correspendence to complain or demand. We can't let them get the impression that the majority of people are complaining.
Let them know when they've done something right
