If you watched any television newscasts Friday, or read a paper Saturday, you were bombarded with claims of doom and gloom as a result of the August unemployment report showing 4,000 fewer people on American payrolls than in July.
Yet, what media largely ignored were shifting sociological population dynamics indicating this summer's poor jobs gains could be caused by the smallest percentage of teenagers seeking work since such data started being collected in 1948.
In fact, though the "civilian noninstitutional population" of persons sixteen to nineteen-years-old reached 17 million for the first time in history last month, only 5.665 million of these teens were employed, the fewest for any August since 1965 when the population of such young adults was only 13 million.
Isn't this newsworthy? Well, there's much more that was ignored in this report for those actually interested in facts rather than excessively bearish, pessimistic spin.
For instance, the "civilian labor force participation rate" for teenagers dropped to 39.7 percent, the lowest since such data have been collected. What this means is fewer teens as a percentage bothered even looking for work this summer than ever.
And, the actual percentage of this population that ended up being employed in August was also the lowest since such data have been collected, a disgraceful 33.3 percent.
Yes, folks, fully two-thirds of America's work-aged teens took the summer off, apparently more than ever in history.
Isn't this newsworthy?
After all, to put this in perspective, in August 1989, almost 50 percent of teens were employed.
Now, the cynical person might say that this low teen employment is a function of a bad economy and that such potential job seekers sat the summer out because they didn't feel they could find work.
Nonsense. The actual number of teens considered unemployed this August was only 1.086 million, the fewest for any August going back to 1969. Furthermore, the total number of people not in the labor force across the entire population due to discouragement is only 392,000. That's it.
So, though folks on the left and their media minions love to suggest people aren't looking for work because they don't think they can find it, nothing could be further from the truth.
Some more numbers to consider that media won't:
- Although the civilian noninstitutional population sixteen years of age and older hit an all-time high of 232.2 million in August, the labor force shrank by 340,000. Where do you think most of the shrinkage came from? That's right - teenagers.
- In July, the labor force aged sixteen to nineteen was 7 million. This declined to 6.751 million in August, down 251,000. As such, 74 percent of the decline in the labor force in August was amongst teenagers.
- The remaining 89,000 are comprised of 25,000 which left the labor force due to discouragement, and 64,000 leaving for other reasons that could include such things as retirement, the desire to stay home with children, etc.
As such, the real issue here that was almost universally ignored was a continuous reduction in teenagers seeking summer jobs, and not an economy that's stopped producing opportunities for those who want work.
Now, that's not to say that the current problems in the credit and housing markets aren't having a deleterious impact on the economy, and mightn't cause a recession in the near or distant future.
Instead, given the specificity and detailed nature of employment data collected and disseminated by the Labor Department and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it does seem that media could do a significantly better job of dissecting and reporting changes in American work habits that could be much more responsible for such data than anything companies or governments are doing.
More to the point, such changes might be societal and sociological rather than economic. Shouldn't media explore that? Or is that too much to ask?
This is especially important as the baby boomers begin to retire. After all, this mass exodus from the labor force that certainly will start occurring in the next few years will also reduce employment. Will media blame that on companies and governments, too, or accurately report the changes in labor demographics?
I know. It'll depend on which Party controls the White House, won't it?

Michigan
September 9, 2007 - 12:22 ET by UphillBecause it obviously doesn't matter who lives in the Governor's Mansion. VW just announced it is moving up to a thousand higher paying jobs to Virginia. This continues a trend of jobs being sucked south of (our) border. Now, I know that Michigan's increasing unemployment rate does not solely rest on the shoulders of Governor Granholm, but she is doing absolutely nothing to correct this ailing problem.
And don't get me started on her effort to raise taxes to help our economy!
Hey Noel - are these
September 9, 2007 - 12:40 ET by TruthMongerHey Noel - are these teenager jobs you mention the notorious "jobs Americans won't do?" You know, the jobs the illegal immigrants need to be here for?
Very interesting info - and ain't it funny how just one person like you can find all of this stuff out, and yet a major news outlet with several hundred employees can't seem to:)?
Maybe if they hired more people and raised our taxes...?

Hey Truthmonger - you mean like drywalling?
September 9, 2007 - 16:30 ET by NforceOr lawn mowing? Or house painting? How many liberals know that the Gulf Coast is STILL not recovered from Katrina after two freaking years because of a lack of construction help? Teenage jobs include the restaurant busboy, mall rat cashier, and tourist trap t-shirt shop stockboy. Now for the brilliant liberals, where do they see more Mexicans, on construction sites or manning registers and filling water goblets? Thought so. I'd rather burn in hell than vote RAT. Both would be about as painful and self destroying.
It seems blatantly obvious
September 9, 2007 - 13:19 ET by robert108It seems blatantly obvious that the jobs formerly taken by teenagers are now being taken by invaders. Entry level stuff. It's just another cost of allowing our country to be invaded by refugees from the corrupt socialist countries to the south of us. The money that would have been earned and spent by teenagers is now being sent out of the country.
next up: rain doesn't exist anymore because it's a clear day
September 9, 2007 - 18:05 ET by lunaticcringeradiothis is such a lie to the general public, every year at this time the unemployement rate has a small bump up because working teens are going back to school and it'll subside the next report with teens settling back in to other shifts and, tada, senior citizens that want to work will fill those positions to keep busy.
oh and the dreaded number 4000, oh my god, 4000, did you hear, 4000, that's 4 whole thousand, oh my god, not 1000, not 2000, not even 3000, oh my god it was 4 zero zero zero thousand. maybe i should start writing their hype lines.
i'm suprised that's only nationwide, the phoenix metro area alone, hell the city of peoria and glendale alone could probably absorb that number of employment swing without a blink of an eye. this is such a lie to the public to spin this in a negative light, if in fact that number is a nationwide figure, it is an unbelieveably great number in how low it is.
i have a question, how low is the unemployment rate itself? cause 4000 jobs wont even turn a %5.0 to %5.1 which by the way the unemployment rate has been at an all time record low for an all time record span of time and you never hear about that. damn tax cuts ruin everything. i had a moron mouth off a few months ago that if things were so great that there would be a zero unemployment rate. so i asked him should all chidren and old people work from birth to grave and where was that %5 was attributed to and the idiot actually told me it was all the homeless put out on the streets because of the bush tax cuts. no kids, no retired people, only homeless people victims of that evil george bush. it's funny how guilty liberal nutbags are, and how greedy they are with other peoples money, that they are eager to spend on project to assuage their feelings.
ps if anyone's looking for some work, there are so many help wanted signs all over phoenix, but you have to have a degree in something other than liberal arts in fashion design, hell you might be able to make good money with that over in the biltmore. if you want work there's plenty of it here in aviation repair, the air conditioning business is starving for work, UTI is pumping out repair technicians in all kinds of motorized repair. none of these jobs are pizza tossers or burger flipping pay. something very well paying for a younger person to apply themselves in early life until they learn an even better trade. nursing is hurting so bad. the dental field. of course those aren't instant managemen, fancy dress up, big desk, managing a bunch of people around jobs that apparently the media thinks every high schooler should fall right into.

September 10, 2007 - 02:37 ET by lunaticcringeradioi wasn't sure if my sense of humor was being appreciated here or not. i guess you could say i'm a conservative sh sh sh shock jock. when i do my show i try purposefully to be as offensive as possible yet i am very conservative in many of the decisions and positions i take.
the two biggest arguements that i split from the "republican party" is my complete lack of concern regarding homosexuals. i don't care what legal aged people do with their organs, that to me is a basic need to persue individual freedom, a true conservative ideology. second i am pro abortion even though i personally wouldn't make that choice, i always used a condom to prevent that problem in the first place, but still i support it for the same individual freedom, and also because i want traffic cut in rush hour and more parking. free up a parking spot....have an abortion. besides liberals tend to have more abortions and we don't need more of them voting. i'm completely pulling that statement out of my ass but it's a wishful thought. other than those two points i'm very conservative, and if you can stand my foul language on air let me know and i'll send you and invite to listen to the show and participate......once i get my computer back from warranty repair.

My brother pointed out to
September 10, 2007 - 11:48 ET by pbanks7My brother pointed out to me that 4,000 jobs in a country with 300 million people in it is statistically SQUAT! 0.0013% is a drop of water in Lake Michigan. Oh, but there's a Republican in the White House, so FOUR THOUSAND PEOPLE LOST THEIR JOBS - THAT'S SIGNIFICANT, JUST ASK US!
It reminds me of Dan Rather when Reagan was pres: "Unprecedented growth in <insert economic factor here>, but experts say it can't last."
Ignorance is bliss. It's easier to repeat a mindless slogan than to do some actual research.
It's the minimum wage, stupid

Min Wage?
September 10, 2007 - 15:12 ET by LionKingLOL...why would an increase in the minimum wage affect employment? Until we have true socialism, we will try and impose corporate welfare (socialism) via the minimum wage. Companies would never reduce head-count because of labor costs...that is just unheard of. </sarc...
