Are Gore and Newsweek’s Climate Change ‘Deniers’ Accusations Coordinated?

As NewsBusters reported Sunday, Newsweek's current issue featured a cover story blasting anthropogenic global warming skeptics as "deniers," and pointing fingers at companies like ExxonMobil as participating in a coordinated misinformation campaign akin to the tobacco industry misleading citizens about the dangers of cigarette smoking.

Shortly after this new issue hit the stands, Al Gore told a forum in Singapore, "the deniers offered a bounty of $10,000 for each article disputing the consensus that people could crank out and get published somewhere."

This raises an interesting question: Is this a coordinated attack designed to incite anger in citizens that polls show are not as upset about this issue as the left and their media minions?

As reported by the Associated Press Tuesday (emphasis added):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Research aimed at disputing the scientific consensus on global warming is part of a huge public misinformation campaign funded by some of the world's largest carbon polluters, former Vice President Al Gore said Tuesday.

"There has been an organized campaign, financed to the tune of about $10 million a year from some of the largest carbon polluters, to create the impression that there is disagreement in the scientific community," Gore said at a forum in Singapore. "In actuality, there is very little disagreement."

Gore likened the campaign to the millions of dollars spent by U.S. tobacco companies years ago on creating the appearance of scientific debate on smoking's harmful effects.

[...]

After the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, made up of the world's top climate scientists, released a report in February that warned that the cause of global warming is "very likely" man-made, "the deniers offered a bounty of $10,000 for each article disputing the consensus that people could crank out and get published somewhere," Gore said.

"They're trying to manipulate opinion and they are taking us for fools," he said.

He said Exxon Mobil Corp., the world's largest publicly traded oil company, is one of the major fuel companies involved in attempting to mislead the public about global warming.

Notice the word "deniers?" This is what Newsweek published days earlier (emphasis added):

As [Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-California)] left a meeting with the head of the international climate panel, however, a staffer had some news for her. A conservative think tank long funded by ExxonMobil, she told Boxer, had offered scientists $10,000 to write articles undercutting the new [IPCC] report and the computer-based climate models it is based on. "I realized," says Boxer, "there was a movement behind this that just wasn't giving up."

[...]

Since the late 1980s, this well-coordinated, well-funded campaign by contrarian scientists, free-market think tanks and industry has created a paralyzing fog of doubt around climate change. Through advertisements, op-eds, lobbying and media attention, greenhouse doubters (they hate being called deniers) argued first that the world is not warming; measurements indicating otherwise are flawed, they said. Then they claimed that any warming is natural, not caused by human activities. Now they contend that the looming warming will be minuscule and harmless. "They patterned what they did after the tobacco industry," says former senator Tim Wirth, who spearheaded environmental issues as an under secretary of State in the Clinton administration. "Both figured, sow enough doubt, call the science uncertain and in dispute. That's had a huge impact on both the public and Congress."

Coincidence, or a coordinated campaign by the left to stifle the growing number of scientists around the world who are speaking out and writing articles refuting anthropogenic global warming theories whilst inciting the public's anger?

After all, neither Gore nor Newsweek chose to address the billions of dollars being spent by global warming alarmists to elicit international hysteria concerning this issue, and how such funds dwarf what is going to skeptical scientists and writers to add a modicum of balance to the discussion.

As Marc Morano, Communications Director for Sen. James Inhofe (R-Oklahoma), pointed out in his rebuttal to Newsweek's disgraceful piece, "proponents of man-made global warming have been funded to the tune of $50 BILLION in the last decade or so, while skeptics have received a paltry $19 MILLION by comparison."

Gore talks about $10 million possibly coming from ExxonMobil, which the oil giant has denied as "completely false." However, why do both Gore and Newsweek refuse to share information about funding going to the alarmists?

As Morano carefully detailed:

"The [climate] alarmists also enjoy a huge financial advantage over the skeptics with numerous foundations funding climate research, University research money and the United Nations endless promotion of the cause. Just how much money do the climate alarmists have at their disposal? There was a $3 billion donation to the global warming cause from Virgin Air's Richard Branson alone. The well-heeled environmental lobbying groups have massive operating budgets compared to groups that express global warming skepticism. The Sierra Club Foundation 2004 budget was $91 million and the Natural Resources Defense Council had a $57 million budget for the same year. Compare that to the often media derided Competitive Enterprise Institute's small $3.6 million annual budget. In addition, if a climate skeptic receives any money from industry, the media immediately labels them and attempts to discredit their work. The same media completely ignore the money flow from the environmental lobby to climate alarmists like James Hansen and Michael Oppenheimer. (ie. Hansen received $250,000 from the Heinz Foundation and Oppenheimer is a paid partisan of Environmental Defense Fund) The alarmists have all of these advantages, yet they still feel the need to resort to desperation tactics to silence the skeptics. (LINK) Could it be that the alarmists realize that the American public is increasingly rejecting their proposition that the family SUV is destroying the earth and rejecting their shrill calls for "action" to combat their computer model predictions of a 'climate emergency?'"

Certainly, it seems quite suspicious that Gore and Newsweek ignored actual funding data going to both sides of this debate while employing very similar language just days apart to point fingers at "deniers," as well as using the tobacco industry analogy.

Has the June failure of the G-8 to impose CO2 emissions caps, and the July failure of Gore's Live Earth concerts, scared alarmists about the future of their cause? Have polls consistently showing that Americans aren't getting nearly as hysterical about this issue as Gore and his sycophants in the media want discouraged believers to the point that a new tactic is being tested?

With gas prices still hovering around the $3/gallon level, and oil company profits quite healthy, this looks like an easy target. As the weather really hasn't cooperated this year - especially tropical storms which, for the second year in a row, haven't materialized anywhere near the hysterical forecasts - maybe a new campaign is needed to stoke the public's anger.

Think about it: the public's real interest in this issue was largely precipitated by Hurricane Katrina followed quickly by the expedient release of Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth." Gore continues to claim that we've got ten years to act before there'll be irreversible damage to the planet. Of course, he's been making this claim for years, but nobody cares about that.

The reality is that barring additional catastrophic climate events, the public's interest in spending their own money on this issue is going to thoroughly disappear. As the recent Newsweek article pointed out about its own polling data:

39 percent of those asked say there is "a lot of disagreement among climate scientists" on the basic question of whether the planet is warming; 42 percent say there is a lot of disagreement that human activities are a major cause of global warming. Only 46 percent say the greenhouse effect is being felt today."

[...]

[L]ess than half [are] in favor of requiring high-mileage cars or energy-efficient appliances and buildings.

As such, the public doesn't seem to be buying into the hysteria. And, if some major climate event doesn't happen soon, these public opinion numbers are going to make matters much worse for the alarmists.

As a result, maybe they feel they're running out of time, especially given the number of scientists who believe the current warming cycle peaked in 1998, and that we have begun a cooling trend. Might they be thinking a conspiracy similar to what tobacco companies did decades ago is just the tonic they need to rekindle the public's ire?

After all, Americans love a conspiracy theory, right? And, many hate the oil companies. So, maybe the new tactic being tried by the alarmists - since the current one clearly isn't working - is to create the appearance of a conspiracy concerning this issue all being funded by those nasty oil companies.

Now, to be sure, oil companies funding such activities is not a new concept. This industry is constantly in the crosshairs of environmental groups, and has been accused of funding anthropogenic global warming skeptics for years.

However, what seems new is the timing of this Newsweek piece coincident with Gore's statements in Singapore, along with skeptics now being referred to as deniers.

As such, this bears watching.

The fact that 90% of Al

The fact that 90% of Al Gore's rhetoric relies on bashing his opposition rather than talking about science and facts is discrediting him more every day. Of course, he has had a problem with talking about FACTS his entire political career. And I would say his career is cooling off as global warming is exposed for the fraud it is.

Gore don't talk

You're right, xfast.  Gore shuns open debate of the data, while trying to generate fear in the public mind.  Polls suggest that a sizeable number of Americans want to hear the whole story, and Prince Albert won't present it.

Isn't this just more

Isn't this just more evidence of the allignment between the liberal agenda and MSM coverage that extend to other areas, as well? The MSM picks up their talking points, then corroborates, expands, and amplifies them. It's only the liberal agenda that drive the issues that the networks and print media cover. Only, in Newsweek's case, they are blatantly advocating the GW agenda, they aren't being coy about it, at all.

I agree the term is a problem, but maybe we can turn it around. The other side, after all, seems to be in denial WRT evidence from various other bodies in our solar system, right? Our side long ago wisely quit denying the change and started talking about what's causing it. The Sun still seems like a logical suspect for the vast majority of the effect even if humanity also causes a slight warming effect, too.

Algore should consider reducing his caloric intake.  By trimming his meals, he could become more healthy and reduce his methane contribution to the atmosphere by 15%.

Conspiracy Theory

We all know it! In the tradition of JFK, Roswell and Bigfoot, Global Warming is the biggest Conspiracy Theory of our Time!

Should we wonder why Elton

Should we wonder why Elton John is advocating the internet be turned off for five years?  The existance of the alternate media via websites has broken the lib control of the information flow to the public.  Had Al Gore pushed this hard 10 years earlier before the internet really became widely available to the public I shudder to think of the consequences of his success.  All one needs to do is use a search engine to find the facts which leads to the truth.  As past threads have highlighted even a teenager (15 year old) can get to the bottom of the matter to determine that AGW is a hoax.  All the facts are there at your fingertips if you really want to know what the truth is, it really doesn't take that much to discover with an open mind.

The only thing Al Gore has left to him is to discredit the dissenters, silencing them is no longer working, and threatening them as a recent bureaucrat found out will draw fire from Sen. Inhoffe with the resulting bad PR.  What we have at this point is the faithful (Gorites) attempting various vacuous logical falacies to hornswaggle the public and other scientists with down is up and right is left arguments.  Hence every climate extreme or event is blamed on AGW, we all know better, because such events have happened in the past prior to the claim AGW period. No matter how much money they throw at studies, none of them will prove AGW is occuring.  If CO2 is driving climate, then why has the average Global temperature gone down since 1998, 9 years ago?  CO2 has increased not fallen since 1998, hence AGW theory fails it's own premise.

The end is near for AGW, repent you sinners!

Hello.  My name is AF5O and I am a GW denier.

It started just a little at first, you know, surfing the net, looking for facts.  And then it went to completely looking at the facts and drawing my own conclusions.

I know, I know, I was suppose to walk lock step with Algore and all the rest of you but I just couldn’t bring myself to fall for the lie.

Now I’m a full blown denier and I don’t see an end to my doing so.

Thanks.

I can't dream this crap up:

I can't dream this crap up: Walking Causes Global Warming.

 The sums were done by

The sums were done by Chris Goodall, campaigning author of How to Live a Low-Carbon Life, based on the greenhouse gases created by intensive beef production. “Driving a typical UK car for 3 miles [4.8km] adds about 0.9 kg [2lb] of CO2 to the atmosphere,” he said, a calculation based on the Government’s official fuel emission figures. “If you walked instead, it would use about 180 calories. You’d need about 100g of beef to replace those calories, resulting in 3.6kg of emissions, or four times as much as driving.

ROFL, LMAO, sides hurt, can't breathe...   Walking is bad for the environment, from here on out you must get an electric wheel chair scooter or drive a car, lest you cause the world to boil.  You're absolutely right, you can't just make this up.  So basically we all need to starve to save the earth.

Breathing Found to cause

Breathing Found to cause Global Warming

Scientist with the Algore Institute on Global Warming have found that the Carbon Dioxide caused by Humans breathing as one of the major causes of GW.

Dr. I.M. Fulofit, director of Human Impact studies at the institute stated in the report released to Algore himself, “The impact of human breathing on the environment is just devastating.  As the poles recede it is clear that the amount of Carbon Dioxide release is killing polar bears, seals and penguins.”

When asked what recommendations they would make to help combat breathing, Al made a few suggestions.

“We have found that there are many people who breathe heavier than others.  So these people should cut back on their breathing.  Also all people across the world can hold their breath for two minutes about three times a day that will greatly reduce the amount of CO2 going into the air. Last of all there are those who can quit breathing all together and I think you know who you are.”

It is apparent with al this breathing going on that we are headed down a path that will lead to our doom. Please breathe more responsibly.

The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is the rifle recoil.

Not enough drugs in the world to treat these people.

I am beginning to come to the conclusion these people are trying their damnedest to drive a percentage of the world population (Western world, most likely) to suicide over all of this scat.  The rest of us will suffer the extermination they come up with that will be carbon friendly.

Does that mean the

Does that mean the Gas Chambers are out???

With regard to the scientific community, he's correct. They all agree we don't know the answer with any real degree of certainty.   Besides the concept of

Besides the concept of man-made global warming the second biggest scam here is that these so-called environmental groups are really environmental groups when in fact they are just another left wing political group pushing the socialist agenda.  In the past they were satisfied with stopping new or existing development by finding a rare butterfly or something.  Now they have played the trump card and are trying to stop free market capitalism in one colossal action.  Not only that but countries will no longer be completely sovereign but subject to 'regulation and taxation' by the U.N.

I find it amazing that Al

I find it amazing that Al Gore thinks he can get away with Projection by accusing us of the very thing his side is guilty of doing.  Typical liberal tactic, but this time Al we have the jump on you.

1. AGW has an organized well run widely disseminated propaganda arm with card carrying members, i.e. the MSM, who financially support the effort.

2. Does it not run contrary to journalistic ethics to present oneself as an unbiased reporter but yet give financially to a special interest group which inturn feeds you essentially press releases slanted with only one perspective? When a reporter only acts as a conduit for a press release they become a shill.

3. Does not the failure to provide an opposing view point or existing alternative explaination a sign of poor journalism or unethicial conduct if deliberate? It's called an error of omission.

Has anyone ever confirmed

Has anyone ever confirmed that AEI ever even sent those letters out?  I've read a lot of mentions of this $10,000 reward, but they all cite the same UK Guardian report.  I've never seen any other report of these alledged letters.  Also, there's nothing on the AEI site that I can find where this reward was, or is, being offered.  All I keep finding are references to these alledged letters, followed closely by a statement that AEI receives some funding from ExxonMobil, but never have I seen any connection made between ExxonMobil funding and the alledged letters, which I think there would be evidence of if the report of the letters were true.

I have also seen several pieces that deny these letters were ever sent, that scientists were ever offered money, etc., so have any of you ever found a reference that offers evidence of these letters that doesn't rely on the UK Guardian article?

 The American Enterprise

The American Enterprise Institute offered scientists, including some who in no way can be seen as allies of the so-called "skeptic" camp, $10,000 to review several thousand pages of scientific material from the most recent United Nations IPCC climate change report and write an original piece of 7,500-10,000 words reflecting their view of it. Hard work, in other words, for an appropriate -- based on the market -- fee. No requirement was made that the scientist disagree with, or criticize, the IPCC report.

Newsweek reported this as "offer[ing] scientists $10,000 to write articles undercutting the new report and the computer-based climate models it is based on" -- a completely unfair description.

The Irony of It

I find it ironic that Gore believes a "scientist" would sell his soul, and compromise his ethics, for a mere $10,000.  He must believe all these guys are Democrat Politicians.

Never argue with an idiot.  They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Lunacy

Expanding on some of the above, the question that needs to be asked to Al Gore and his ilk is "If we implement all the controls you ask for, or we go one step further and we eliminate man altogether, what type of climate would you expect?" Would earthquakes still happen? Will floods still occur? Will New York have 30 days of 70 degree weather in August? If they can't answer this question, they have no business spreading their alarmism and making people - even innocent children - pay for their nonsense.

Gorebal Warming

There's little doubt this is becoming more of a political campaign than a scientific campaign.  There is little science coming out, and that which is appears to be more of the fear mongering we've becom accustomed to. (Read the report about earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanos becoming more prominent because of Global Warming).

This being the case, the only thing they can do is kill the messenger, who disputes their theories.  The science, coming out against Global Warming, must be good science, otherwise they would be attacking it.

Never argue with an idiot.  They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Marc has done a nice job on

Marc has done a nice job on this hilighting Al Gore's propaganda machine.  I think it is becoming clear that SEJ is feeding stories and the MSM have co-ordinated the AGW publication effort.  http://www.americanthinker.com/2007/08/al_gore_slings_bogus_borrowed.html

Furthermore, the invitations were sent to a broad spectrum of scientists and policymakers, with no attempt made whatsoever to avoid those with favorable opinions of the IPCC reports.  In fact, one of the letters (PDF) quoted in the Guardian article was written to Professor Steve Schroeder of Texas A&M -- a known proponent of the UN Panel.  As explained by DeMuth, the institute had:

"canvassed scholars with a range of views on the scientific and policy issues, with an eye to the intrinsic quality and interest of their work rather than to whether partisans might characterize them as climate change ‘skeptics' or ‘advocates.'"

In other words, the accusations leveled by Gore were blindly based on accusations leveled by Begley based on accusations leveled by an anonymous Barbara Boxer staffer based on accusations leveled by the Guardian based on fabricated and disproved accusations spoon-fed to them by Greenpeace.

I find it ironic that AEI in all probability intended to bolster the AGW case to counter the skeptics by soliciting an independent review of the IPCC findings. Al Gore and the rest of the conartists recognized the threat to their house of cards immediately and sought to disrupt the well intentioned but misguided effort of AEI.  They got a two-fer out of the deal by falsing accusing AEI without naming them directly thus derailing the effort to have an independent review and then score propaganda points by further villifying the oil companies who had little to do with the project.

Tell us anyone did any scientist(s) take the $10,000 offer to take the time to do an independent review of the IPCC gathered facts????  You see how clever Al Gore and rest of his cadre are at propaganda?  They saved themselves from an embarrassing expose'.

Al loses the plot

Ok, this is it. Algore has finally lost it - his tenuous grip on reality is now completely gone... He has clearly joined the tinfoil hat brigade.

Al's mental state has been deteriorating for years. I mean - the Unabomber phase, the Michael Moore impersonation, Music Mogul and Media guru, the Religious Prophet and now Paranoid Delusions. It's really all there. (I'll be kind and not mention the Cheeseburger addiction).

Frankly, it's a decline that fits the pattern of a disintegrating personality. Expect it to get worse.

The origin of the $10K bounty myth was that AEI tried to get a number of individuals (both pro and con AGW ) to contribute chapters to a book they were going to publish. The payment to someone for writing a chapter (a honorarium) is standard practice. This was then distorted by propagandists at Greenpeas into a "bounty" for attacking AGW. The media was instantly stooged by this, and of course did not bother to do something as conservative as check facts. We're in the entertain and shape public opinion business, not the information business, we don't check no stinking facts. Besides if it comes from greenp*ss, they are more credible than God - so why check?

The $10 million funding the attack on AGW is kind of hilarious. When you think about the BILLIONS pumped into climate research by governments, the money from left wing groups, foundations and think tanks. The billions controlled by environmentalist organizations such as Greenpeas, EDF etc etc, throw in the value of free advertising supplied by MSM and it is just too hilarious to attack that big fat $10 million as the sinister
funding of an evil conspiracy. Ten mill wouldn't have paid for catering for the LIE Earth concerts.

Al has seen too many Hollywood schlockbusters and with his problems with differentiating truth and lies...

(And if anyone wants to know why the MSM is slowly going extinct, Newsweak's attempt to demonstrate its loyalty to all things left and liberal is a good example of how to trash your credibility and insult your readers intelligence at the same time. It may be the toast of left wing thinktanks for this article but ordinary people
wouldn't use this mag to line their birdcages.)

But the interesting thing about this little exercise by Al and Newswank is that it shows the growing fear in the AGW movement. They are realizing that their little plan to bully scientists, brainwash the public and wake up rulers of the earth is not working. They are losing control not gaining it. You can smell the stink of fear (oh year and Al's methane from those cheeseburgers...)
