Alan Colmes Fabricates Cruz's Absence From Scalia's Funeral, Then Pretends He Wasn't Caught

Liberal Alan Colmes, apparently miffed at people who have criticized President Barack Obama for not attending the funeral of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, asserted earlier today that GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz would not be there.

Colmes got it wrong. Cruz was there, and it was known for quite some time that he would be there. Since the words "I'm sorry" are apparently not in his vocabulary, he pretended that he hadn't been caught making something up.

Here's Colmes's original tweet (HT Twitchy):

Note that it was sent early Saturday morning.

According to a Friday morning item at The Hill, it was already known Thursday evening that Cruz would be at Scalia's funeral:

Cruz opts to attend Scalia funeral

Ted Cruz is slated to take a break from the campaign trail in South Carolina on Saturday to attend the funeral of Justice Antonin Scalia in Washington, D.C., according to reports.

A spokesperson for Cruz's campaign had said on Thursday that while Cruz wanted to attend the funeral, it would be "impossible" for him to steal away from South Carolina on the day of the primary.

Late Thursday, Cruz's campaign said the presidential candidate would be attending the funeral in Washington, according to CNN and CBS News.

For Alan Colmes's benefit, The Hill highlighted "CBS" and "CNN" to indicate that it had linked to reports from those networks time-stamped on Thurday at 7:40 p.m. and 10:56 p.m., respectively.

In other words, it was quite well-known for a about 36 hours that Cruz would attend Scalia's funeral. But Alan Colmes had a two day-old smear that was too good to check.

As would be expected, Colmes didn't handle being called out particularly well. Here is his change-the-subject tease at his Alan.com web site:

Wow, Alan. An "ex-congressman" criticized Obama. That's big stuff. (That's sarcasm, folks.)

The entry at Colmes's web site consists only of a headline ("UPDATE: Cruz attends Scalia funeral after all"), a link to the Hill item, and links to Colmes's prior posts.

Here's how Colmes, after a firestorm or "you're wrong" tweets erupted, teased his Alan.com entry on Twitter:

I guess being a leftist means you never have to say you're sorry, and that you're free to replace one smear with another without suffering any consequences. What a disgrace.

Sean Hannity's move to put Colmes out to pasture from what was originally the "Hannity & Colmes" show on Fox News in 2008 was clearly a very wise move.
