Las Vegas Newspaper Owner Hosts Obama Fundraiser, Bundles for Hillary

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported President Obama spoke at a Nevada State Democratic Party fundraiser for Catherine Cortez Masto, who is running for Harry Reid’s Senate seat in 2016. “The event was held at the Henderson home of Las Vegas Sun editor and publisher Brian Greenspun. Contributions at the event hit a high of $33,400. The event, which drew more than 100 people, raised more than $300,000.”

What kind of newspaper is the Las Vegas Sun that its editor and publisher hosts Democratic Party fundraisers with the president? A routinely partisan one. Jon Ralston, just hailed by Chuck Todd on last Sunday’s Meet the Press as one of the West’s best reporters, noted Greenspun was quite a partisan for Harry Reid.

In response to a Politico article claiming Greenspun isn't known for “micromanaging” the editorial contents of his paper, Ralston tweeted an online article from April, which he introduced this way:

Now that CNN's Dana Bash has found Harry Reid to be unrepentant about his Mitt Romney tax lies, it's finally time to publish a column I wrote contemporaneously with the Nevada senator's McCarthy-like tactic during the 2012 campaign. The column was never published because Las Vegas Sun Editor Brian Greenspun attempted to protect his friend, Reid, from the criticism.

I never wrote for the Sun again.

Obama and Reid aren’t the only Democrats that this newspaper publisher loves. From a Hillary Clinton-in-Vegas story on CNN.com last October:

Clinton was also interviewed on stage Monday by Brian Greenspun, the publisher of the Las Vegas Sun and Bill Clinton's college roommate.

Greenspun, who referred to Clinton as a "friend" on stage, kicked off their conversation by presenting Clinton with a pair of running shoes. The newspaper publisher was clear to point out that his wife bought the shoes "in the section that said running shoes," a reference to Clinton's likely run for the presidency in 2016.

Last month, the Guardian reported Hillary’s campaign released a list of her campaign bundlers who raised more than $100,000 in donations, including “Las Vegas publisher Brian Greenspun, a longtime friend and college classmate of Bill Clinton.”

In the last election cycle, Greenspun gave $2,000 to Democratic congressional candidate Erin Bilbray in a losing battle against incumbent Rep. Joe Heck, who is now the front-runner for the Republican nomination for the Harry Reid Senate seat.
