ABC Names Michael Strahan New GMA Host; Here’s His Political History

ABC announced on Tuesday that former football star Michael Strahan will be joining Good Morning America full-time. The Live With Kelly and Michael co-host doesn’t have much a political record, unlike Democratic activist and GMA colleague George Stephanopoulos.

Two years ago, while journalists were ignoring the Veterans Affairs scandal, Strahan actually grilled Barack Obama. During a May 30, 2014 edition of Live, he pressed the President: “But a lot of the soldiers haven't been given the treatment, veterans, that they should have got when they come home.”

That’s not to say he hasn’t fawned over Democrats and liberal causes. On December 10, 2015, Strahan guest-hosted GMA and gushed over Michelle Obama rapping: “Now this morning the White House getting a little white hot, thank the First Lady Michelle Obama. She teamed up with SNL’s Jay Pharoah, dropping a surprise rap song called Go to College.”

On March 10, 2016, the ex-football player couldn’t restrain himself as he raved over Canada’s new, liberal Prime Minister: “Canada's young and handsome new Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has arrived with his wife Sophie.” He added, “People on both sides of the aisle are gushing over the Prime Minister's charisma....One headline today said “Justin fever hits Washington.”

In 2011, Strahan starred in a Marriage equality ad, saying, “As a defensive end for the New York Giants, I always played the game tough but fair. And I feel it's unfair to stop committed couples from being married.”

Still, unlike a certain GMA co-host, he hasn’t worked extensively for Democrats and secretly donated to the Clinton Foundation. That puts him a step ahead of Stephanopoulos.
