MSNBC’s ‘Breaking News’: Protester Says Cruz Is ‘Right-Wing Bigot’

April 6th, 2016 4:40 PM

MSNBC journalists on Wednesday breathlessly broke in with the liberal network’s idea of “breaking news.” Reporting on a heckler yelling at Ted Cruz in New York, a network graphic alerted, “Breaking News: Protester: Cruz Is ‘Right-Wing Bigot.’” That’s breaking news? Someone, somewhere, screaming something?

Reporter Vaughn Hillyard hyped this somehow important story, narrating the man’s complaints: “He was calling him a racist bigot. He was calling him a right-wing bigot that has no place in the Bronx. The man started yelling that this is an immigrant community.” Hillyard explained that the individual asserted the Bronx is a “low-income community.”

Backing up the protester, Hillyard noted, “In this particular congressional district in the Bronx, this is a 65 percent Hispanic community, 25 percent African-American.” Reveling in the fact that Cruz got yelled at, the journalist continued, “But this is his welcome.”

To underline how this was somehow an important event, MSNBC changed its graphic from “Protester: Cruz Is ‘Right-Wing Bigot’” to “Breaking News: Protester: Cruz Is ‘Right-Wing Bigot’"

CRAIG MELVIN: A few moments ago we were talking about this Ted Cruz event here in New York City. We just got some video in from this event. Someone was escorted out just a short time ago. This was moments ago in the Bronx.

MELVIN: I want to bring Vaughn Hillyard back into this thing. Again, that Ted Cruz Q&A that’s supposed to happen there. What — Vaughn, the gentlemen who was escorted out of there. Do we know what he was saying?

VAUGHN HILLYARD: Sure, Craig. He came in— Actually when Cruz —  he cruised right behind our camera here. We’re looking outside the window and Cruz just pulled up probably 15 minutes ago. And this man, this individual, started kind of following him all the way back to an area where Cruz is going back to talk to some people. And the man started kind of heckling him, in a low voice, but heckling him along the way. But then what happened, finally when he got to the back of the room, the man started yelling. As he was walking out and being led out by the police, he continued to yell.

He was calling him a racist bigot. He was calling him a right-wing bigot that has no place in the Bronx. The man started yelling that this is an immigrant community. He said that it's a low income community. And, actually, just for some stats I was looking up. In this particular congressional district here in the Bronx, this is a 65 percent Hispanic community, 25 percent African-American. It's only two percent white here. Median income is 24,000. Forty one percent live below the poverty line. So, that's the setup here. This is what we're looking at. Ted Cruz, this is — he comes to the Bronx. And he was met by people. I mean, there is a flood of people walking along the streets. We don’t know whether the man just stopped in or whether he had planned to stop by. But this is his welcome.
