Reality can be brutal, especially political reality as the Huffington Post seems to have found out. Back in July the Huffington Post went all in on the notion that the Donald Trump candidacy would be ephemeral so they could get away with displaying their bias by consigning Trump stories to the Entertainment, not Politics page. Unfortunately for them, Donald Trump not only lasted through the rest of the summer but he is well in the lead among Republican candidates for the nomination. Obviously at some point, the Huffington Post would be forced to cover Trump like the other candidates and that time appears to be now. However, first let us take a trip back in time to July when the Huffington Post foolishly crawled out on a political limb with this announcement:
After watching and listening to Donald Trump since he announced his candidacy for president, we have decided we won't report on Trump's campaign as part of The Huffington Post's political coverage. Instead, we will cover his campaign as part of our Entertainment section. Our reason is simple: Trump's campaign is a sideshow. We won't take the bait. If you are interested in what The Donald has to say, you'll find it next to our stories on the Kardashians and The Bachelorette.
Some sideshow! Trump has defied the predictions of most of the political pundits and the biased hopes of the Huffington Post to the point where continued coverage of him in only the Entertainment section just makes them look ridiculous. So what to do? What to do?
Instead of licking their wounds by publicly eating humble pie and admit they were wrong, the Huffington Post seems to be very quietly placing Trump stories on their Politics page and hoping that nobody notices the change. Well, guess what? Your humble correspondent has noticed. And on the current Huffington Post Politics page there are not one but TWO Trump stories. What they are about is not as important as the fact of where they are which is where they should have been back in July when the Huffington Post made fools of themselves with their absurd display of bias. Oh, and very briefly here are the two Donald Trump stories on the Politics, not Entertainment, page starting with U.S. Should Charge to Protect Defense Welfare Clients: Donald Trump Got One Idea Right:
Today the Pentagon underwrites the defense of wealthy nations across the globe. Doing so costs America hundreds of billions of dollars annually while leaving Americans less secure. Washington should stop using the Pentagon as a global welfare agency.
The U.S. government at least should charge for its defense services, as Donald Trump has suggested. This is a second best option. But America shouldn't be defending its rich friends for free.
...As Trump observed: "I keep asking, how long will we go on defending South Korea from North Korea without payment?"
The other Trump story that the Huffington Post slipped into their Politics page is A Tale Of Two Bullies:
Donald Trump and Chris Christie are both brash, egomaniacal, bullying Northeasterners running for the nation's top job. They both seem to derive genuine pleasure from puffing themselves up and putting everyone else down.
So why is Trump soaring in the polls, and Christie gasping for air?
Because Christie is the Steve Guttenberg of arrogance and bullying -- he's okay, he gets work; Donald is Daniel Day-Lewis. There aren't any better.
