At what point will members of the Obama administration, from the president himself to John Kerry and other senior officials, down to the workaday folks of the West Wing, decide that Hillary's email scandal is doing intolerable damage to whatever's left of their legacy, and decide to pull the plug?
A significant line was crossed on today's Morning Joe, when Joe Scarborough flatly and repeatedly accused John Kerry's State Department of engaging in a "cover-up" on Hillary's behalf. How much longer will Kerry be willing to sacrifice his reputation on the altar of Hillary's presidential ambitions?
Consider that should Hillary implode and be forced to withdraw from the race, Kerry himself would be among the contenders tipped to replace her. One wink from Kerry to key subordinates could be enough to sink her. When could that happen?
Imagine being inside the State Department or the White House this morning, and hearing "cover-up"--with its echoes of Watergate--mentioned without a peep of protest from the Morning Joe panel that included Mike Barnicle and John Heilemann. How many more hits to the Obama legacy, such as it is, will this administration be willing to endure until it cries "no mas" and unleashes the hounds of truth about Hillary?
JOE SCARBOROUGH: I've got to say what's pathetic as well is the State Department who's basically not answering questions about documents, whether she signed them or not, trying to cover up for her.
When you have John Kerry, we know John and like John, but when John Kerry comes out and says a couple weeks ago, well, I'm sure my e-mails were hacked by the Chinese and the Russians as well, because he knows what's coming. John Kerry knows that we're going to probably find out that Hillary Clinton's e-mails on her home-brew server were hacked. And so now the whole administration seems so desperate to elect her that they're putting that consideration, I'll say it, ahead of protecting classified secrets.
And there is going to be a reckoning. And I've been saying it here for some time. The State Department either starts working to get the truth out or they continue down this road of trying to cover up for her. And there is no in-between. And they have been acting shameful thus far, and they need to be transparent.
Just tell us the truth. That's all we want, State Department: stop covering for Hillary Clinton. Just tell us the truth. Maybe you can exonerate her, but just tell us the truth. Answer the press's question when they ask you every day: did she sign the document before she left? Just answer that question. But they're not doing it because right now the State Department feels like their responsibility is not to getting the truth out and being transparent about what went on with classified documentation, their responsibility is to protect the former Secretary of State, and it's really sad.
