Who got to Donny Deutsch? Seriously. Exactly one week ago, as we reported here, Deutsch was painting a very bleak picture for Hillary Clinton, saying that "Americans are just tired of Hillary," they have "fallen out of like with her," and that people he knows who would automatically be Hillary backers are saying "wow, there's got to be somebody else here."
But there was Deutsch on Morning Joe today, singing a much sunnier tune. Deutsch claimed that the email scandal won't really hurt Hillary and that her supporters are not deserting her: "I don't think it has a profound effect on her candidacy . . . at the end of the day, if you're a Hillary person, you're a Hillary person; people are staying in their lanes." So tell us, readers, what happened to Donny over the course of the last seven days?
How could Deutsch have forgotten what he said just a week ago about traditional Hillary backers deserting her? Donny did look rather ragged this morning, as if he might have awoken shortly before air time in unfamiliar surroundings and barely struggled into the studio.
DONNY DEUTSCH: Here's what I believe, and I'm curious what the smart guys at the table think. I equate this to Donald Trump saying things about John McCain. I think if you like Hillary Clinton, you turn away. And if you don't like Hillary Clinton, you go with this. And I don't think it has a profound effect on her candidacy.
JOE SCARBOROUGH: Donny, where have you been?
DEUTSCH: I just think at the end of the day --
JOE: Her poll numbers are collapsing.
DEUTSCH: I think at the end of the day, if you're a Hillary person, you're a Hillary person. And if you're a Trump person you're a Trump person. And I find more than ever, people are staying in their lanes. And she's taken a hit. But I think as time goes on, people will just kind of go --
