WashPost’s Pathetic Smear Attempt: Brett Kavanaugh’s a Big Fan of ... Baseball?

July 12th, 2018 9:56 AM

Will democracy “die” if Americans don’t know that Brett Kavanaugh’s a Nationals super fan? The Washington Post seems to think so, devoting an entire article posted late Wednesday online about how Trump’s pick for the Supreme Court racked up debt buying Washington Nationals’ baseball tickets, over the past decade...which he paid off.

The Post’s Amy Brittain bylined this breaking news report, but 4 other journalists-- Alice Crites, Andrew Ba Tran, Rick Maese and Thomas Heath, contributed to this very important development as well, the article lets readers know at the bottom.

Brittain and her colleagues apparently poured through financial disclosure reports of the Washington D.C. native to find that a 2016 report showed Kavanaugh had incurred tens of thousands of dollars of credit card debt. Brittain sought answers from White House Spokesman Raj Shah, who explained to the paper that Kavanaugh bought several season tickets and playoff game tickets for himself and friends to watch the local team. Shah also noted some of the debt in the report was for Kavanaugh’s home improvements.

Brittain dug deeper to note that the debts were paid off in 2017. Shah corroborated that Kavanaugh had been reimbursed by friends so the debt was taken care of just months later:

The credit card debts and loan were either paid off or fell below the reporting requirements in 2017, according to the filings, which do not require details on the nature or source of such payments. Shah told The Post that Kavanaugh’s friends reimbursed him for their share of the baseball tickets and that the judge has since stopped purchasing the season tickets.

Shah said the payments for the tickets were made at the end of 2016 and paid off early the next year.

“He did not carry that kind of debt year over year,” Shah said.

The paper added skeptically, “Shah did not provide the names of the friends or additional details about the tickets. Kavanaugh, who is known to be a Nationals fan, declined to comment.”

What a controversy! Yawn. What matter any of this has to do with Kavanaugh’s record on the bench or his ideologies seemed to be lost on the paper, who kept on hammering away, even going after his family life:

Kavanaugh lives in the Village of Chevy Chase, Section 5, where his wife works as the town manager and draws a $66,000 annual salary. She began the job in 2015 and did not report any income for the prior four years.

The Kavanaughs send their two daughters to the Catholic private school of Blessed Sacrament, where tuition costs $10,025 per child.

Talk about grasping at straws. The Post does let us know about the finances of the other Supreme Court Justices on the bench as well but just in the last few paragraphs.

It’s hard to know whether anyone really appreciated the paper's far-fetched attempt at smearing the conservative justice. The comment section on the article alone has many readers mocking the paper for the story.

This is just the latest act of desperation from the liberal paper, whose journalists have written several condescending articles on Kavanaugh since he was announced as President Trump’s pick for the Supreme Court. Just the morning after, the paper fretted that he was “radically conservative” and “extremely polarizing,” while today they wondered how he would rule on “conversion therapy.”
