Watch Larry Wilmore Mock 'Fake News' Host Brian Williams for Leaving Before Mets Won NLCS

October 24th, 2015 3:55 PM

At the top of his Comedy Central program The Nightly Show on Thursday, host Larry Wilmore brought up the New York Mets advancing to the World Series and had some fun with the news at the expense of his viewers, former Daily Show host Jon Stewart, and disgraced ex-NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams.

Before going on a rant about how much he dislikes new Speaker of the House candidate Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) and for being against mandatory paid leave legislation when he told reporters he won’t give up time with his family to be Speaker, Wilmore gave a shout out to the Mets.

After bringing up the Mets, he asked viewers: “You know what is amazing to me?” Providing his viewers an answer, Wilmore told them he had “[a] friend of mine who’s a huge Mets fan” that used to have “a TV show.”

Wilmore then clarified that this person had presided over what “[o]ne could call it fake new, if you will” with the sarcastic caveat that they “suffered every year about those Mets on national television and as Americans, we shared his grief.”

Lamenting that he got his show back in January to only have this friend “move out of the television neighborhood,” Wilmore joked that it was fine “didn’t hurt my feelings” even though “you left a little too soon.”

Further baiting the audience into thinking he was referring to diehard Mets fan Jon Stewart, Wilmore declared: “Three months. Three months is all you had to wait and you could have been savoring this moment in front of everybody.”

About to leave his liberal audience in the dust and confused, Wilmore dropped the punchline by bringing up now MSNBC breaking news anchor Brian Williams: “Any how, good luck to your Mets in the World Series, Brian Williams. [LAUGHTER] Alright. Who did you think I was talking about?”

LARRY WILMORE: Hey, guys, first of all, how about those Mets! [CHEERS AND APPLAUSE]. Pretty good. You know what? I got to tell you, though, I have to tell you the Mets going to the World Series is not what is amazing to me. You know what is amazing to me? I’ll tell you. A friend of mine who’s a huge Mets fan. He had a TV show. One could call it fake news, if you will. He suffered every year about those Mets on national television and as Americans, we shared his grief. [LAUGHTER] Then a brother gets a TV show and he decides to move out of the television neighborhood. It's okay. Didn't hurt my feelings at all, alright, but you left a little too soon, didn't you? Didn't you? Three months. Three months is all you had to wait and you could have been savoring this moment in front of everybody. Any how, good luck to your Mets in the World Series, Brian Williams. [LAUGHTER] Alright. Who did you think I was talking about?
