Open Thread: Obama Says 'If You've Got a Business -- You Didn't Build That'

By NB Staff | July 16, 2012 | 11:25

A  A

Over the weekend President Obama once again demonized wealth creators, downplaying the success of entrepreneurs as something that "[s]omebody else made... happen":

There are a lot of wealthy, successful Americans who agree with me — because they want to give something back.  They know they didn’t — look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own.  You didn’t get there on your own.  I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart.  There are a lot of smart people out there.  It must be because I worked harder than everybody else.  Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.  There was a great teacher somewhere in your life.  Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.  Somebody invested in roads and bridges.  If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that.  Somebody else made that happen.  The Internet didn’t get invented on its own.  Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

Obama continues to insinuate that business owners somehow owe the government for their success. He fails to make the obvious point that businesses succeed or fail on the basis of meeting the needs of others, of meeting the market’s demands. In fact, businesses are much more responsive to changing needs and demands of the marketplace than the public sector.

Yes business succeeds because of other people, but the other people are the customers who enjoy value and services created by business.

I guess I read it wrong as "haole", which I thought might be some sort of Hawaiian slang term.

I'll be sure to read more closely in the future.

ricklail's copy and paste was in error. [Although it seems logical that ucw would have corrected rick had that been the case.]

In any event, I will amend the racial slur to "black ahole" instead of "black a**hole". And ucw is free to correct us both if that is a misquote which misrepresents his intent.

Jer

Maybe?

Submitted by Cool Arrow on Mon, 07/16/2012 - 4:43pm.

Please quote me the odds, given the President's affiliation with Hawaii, that what ucw really meant to say is the exact spelling of a Hawaiian slang word that means "Non-Polynesian"

Granted, it doesn't rank up with the complete works of Shakespeare and a thousand monkeys at typewriters, but I'm pretty sure the odds are long enough to give ucw the benefit of any reasonable doubt.

Cool..

Submitted by Jer on Mon, 07/16/2012 - 4:50pm.

You're right about haole being an Hawaiian term [although probably considered a pejorative in this case at least]. That said, ucw's usage would fall more within the category of a general slur rather than a racial slur. So, I apologize to ucw for suggesting otherwise.

Of course, that doesn't quite take rick off the hook.

I just checked what rick cut & pasted to his fb page [yesterday] and "haole" is rendered rather than your claim.

I found it entertaining because it mirrored the liberal media referring to George Zimmerman as a "white hispanic"

"There's less than one percent of the population of Iowa that is African American. There is probably less than four of five percent that are minorities. What is in Washington? So look, it goes back to what you start off with, what you're dealing with," said Biden. Is that quote misrepresenting what Biden said?  The WaPo quoted him.

➚ Let me help you Jer

Submitted by Cool Arrow on Mon, 07/16/2012 - 8:59pm.

In its most simple terms, here's what happened.

Reporter: Why do you think Iowa schools score higher than DC schools
Biden: The ratio of black students to white students is higher in DC than Iowa, so it is because of what you start with.

Biden gave NO further qualification.

I know this is a stretch, asking you for an honest answer to what I'm going to ask, but I'll ask it anyway. Can you honestly tell me the answer Biden gave would get the same reception coming from Sarah Palin or Mitt Romney?

And finally, as far as you jumping out of your shorts to play the race card before investigating attribution? That's got nothing to do with whether I've "got some nerve". It reflects on you, and only on you.

But I do appreciate you pointing to my behavior as an excuse for yours.

You have seized upon Biden's penchant for clumsy wording and twisted it into a claim--which you have been repeatedly peddling for nearly five years now--that he proclaimed blacks "stupid".

Here is the context. Biden made an honest, accurate--but not exactly politically correct observation--concerning the disproportionate disadvantages faced by young black students resulting in, on average, lower test scores in DC compared with Iowa.

You're making that up. And that falls under the heading of DISHONESTY.  Biden flatly states the reason is the mix of African American students.

You call me dishonest and proceed to lie about what Joe Biden said?  Even with the quote already introduced into the thread?

"There's less than one percent of the population of Iowa that is African American. There is probably less than four of five percent that are minorities. What is in Washington? So look, it goes back to what you start off with, what you're dealing with"

Please show me, in Joe Biden's response, where he said anything about the reason being a matter of advantage.

Looks to me like somebody (Jer, maybe?) has a penchant for ascribing meaning that is neither stated nor implied.

Check the money, Jer.  If you can show that more (per capita) money is spent to teach children in Iowa than DC, I will agree with your claim of "advantage".  Otherwise, you're just making stuff up.

Here's honesty for you, Jer.  I really am surprised you chose that tactic.

The clarification was an overcorrection inasmuch as it attempted to completely scrub the racial component. Yes, I plead guilty to believing that ricklail had done what he said he had done, i.e. copied and pasted ucw's rant [presumably verbatim]; and, believing it therefore more probable ucw had transposed the "a" and "h" in rick's posted "ahole" rather than haole being an actual word--one I suspect was unfamiliar to most folks here, including me.

And, for the record, it seems that haole is hardly a term of endearment, at least not in the sense employed by ucw.

your maligning of my piscatorial knowledge.

You said I didn't know jack shit about fishing.

I pointed out, that in your haste to appease the Snark Monster,  you were incorrect in your assessment of not only my knowledge, but my experience in the field of field and stream as well.

While most fishermen I know enjoy frying up their catch and engaging in post cast gustatory delight, I know no angler who is strictly a "meat" fisherman; that is to say a "hook 'em however and wherever and get 'em in the pot".

Fishing, as both sport and recreation, is best and most satisfactorily practiced with at least a nod to doing it right; otherwise you are merely drowning, if they are your bait of choice,  worms.

Herring are caught by virtue of netting them, period; and certainly not by not 'hooking' them after they are encased in the netting.

Your hermeneutical skills once again fall short in your attempt to try and wriggle off the hook.

In deep sea fishing, any attempt to gaff, not hook, a fish already hooked by fishook, at boatside, is a strike aimed at midbody rather than the gills.  The gills are too near the head to make a viable initial target for gaffing.

Freshwater fishing / boating practice involves a netting ratio far above that of gaffing.

Look on the bright side - I have given you two more words to sharpen your snark skills upon.

"Furthermore, the integrity and relevance of my original 'hooked through the gills' reference still stands. [Where did I state anything about gaffing after  hooking?]

The "hooked through the gills" comment is what started this off in the first place.

The "hook" properly goes in the fishes mouth, not in its gills.  You gaff a fish after it has been hooked.

Stand on the statements "relevance" all you want; but to continue to claim the statement had 'integrity' is farcical.

The second word was 'gustatory'.

and/or preferably go, Mr Limpet.  But occasionally a fish will swallow a hook whereupon it will become lodged in the gullet and possibly impale the gill as well.  That is my understanding of "hooked through the gills".  And, in such cases, the hook is obviously far more difficult to remove, but the fish has very little chance of freeing itself from the hook while being landed or boated...and the angler is pretty well assured of the "catch".  That method of hooking is clearly not by design.

Now, if I am wrong about the foregoing, then my original metaphor was flawed.  Otherwise, it was not.

The more I read this stuff, the more I see "Rambling Nonsense."  Makes me wonder, hell, makes me hope that the Narcissist in Chief is losing what little control of his mind he has.

How he went from a shift of "someone else made it happen" to "government invested in roads" is just amazing as one does not have anything to do with the other.

Someone else making something happen is what business is, you want to start a business, you have to work with other businesses to do it and the only thing the government might have anything to do with it(under normal circumstances) might be the licensing or whatever, but that's it.

HOWEVER, these days, with the poser at the helm, the government is real oppressive to new businesses that doesn't fit the mold(green energy and such nonsense are the ones given a free pass plus billions of squandered dollars) and tries to kill older businesses, usually succeeding as evidenced by the unemployment rating which is actually closer to 20-something percent, not this 8 point-whatever bullshit we get from the bullshit artists in the WH.

I hope the cages are getting rattled to where people will finally see him for what he is, a flim-flam artist with NPD.  I ain't holding my breath though.

Moochelle?) who now demand we fork over what's rightfully ours to them...you got to where you're at (at the bottom) DESPITE all the teachers who tried to teach you, despite all the roads and bridges built by others, despite the entrepreneurs who risked their own money to start a company, despite so many who were willing to give their lives for your freedom to sit on a Hawaiian beach and get stoned with your chums until somebody asked you if you'd like to attend Harvard, and despite all the quota's, the endless grants, the people who tried to instill work values, respect for others, respect for yourselves (having a sense of dignity doesn't cost a dime. You simply choose to have it) You squandered it all!
Nope. Sorry. I'm all out of tears for all the Dopes and deranged who bought into the hope and change.

My wife is a successful

Submitted by Apollo11 on Mon, 07/16/2012 - 1:44pm.

My wife is a successful bestselling novelist, who left her employee (eventually executive-level) corporate job after many years to write full time. She prepared for this move by gaining an MS in journalism at one of the country's leading universities. She eventually led a major company's communications department, producing a global magazine, CEO speeches and annual reports. When she left, she sacrificed a guaranteed income to write full time but only after her books (written in her "spare" time) began to be recognized, received national awards and selling well. Today she has a loyal following of fans from around the world and has been translated into many languages... But it was SHE who took the first leap... So is our president suggesting that even her very initiative, creativity and ideas belong to the state? This assertion reveals more about our president than the target of his statements. He has been "enabled" all his life (a reason we'll never see the college transcripts), doesn't know what real work is (after all a corporate job is "working for the enemy"), doesn't respect innovation, hardwork, and sacrifice (unless it can be collaterized to support his goals), all the while revealing his deeply-held marxist ideology. Despicable.

Very cool about the wife. Very brave thing to do on her part! You must be proud.
Unfortunately, this dufuss-in-chief would belittle her efforts because afterall, someone else had to make the paper, so really, she has that person to thank for her sucess. She just coat-tailed on their work. Unbelievable!

Caj is an avid reader so I am probably one of her fans...;-)

I like what Rush said today. Obama doesnt care that he angered a lot of people with his ridiculous comment. What he wants is the 30 people or so who work FOR a small business owner to get angry at their boss. He's looking for the votes of angry wage earners not the small business owners.

Obama also wants to perpetuate the nonsense that no one can accomplish anything without the government. No one can survive without the government, get people so discouraged or endoctrinated that they finally surrender to tyranny thinking their life will be more comfortable and equatible to others.

Spot on. If our marxist

Submitted by Apollo11 on Mon, 07/16/2012 - 4:38pm.

Spot on. If our marxist president gets his way, there will be no middle to middle-upper class. It will only be the forcibly compliant (tithing) and overregulated corporations and the receiving entitled, non-tax paying class. America will no longer see 3% or more growth per year. We're already seeing the effects in the dismal, non-replacement GDP rates of 2% or less. I fully expect the most recent quarter figures to be restated downward... America will be like Europe, but on steroids. Free college tuition but no jobs!

It will be like all other "Communist" countries, Apollo.

Submitted by Newsbubba on Mon, 07/16/2012 - 6:28pm.

The skinny, raggedy assed masses, and the fat, happy "rulers."

It's always the same story.  "They" know better than "us" what is best for us.  It appears from past experience in the world that what is good for "us" is a meager existence, and what is good for "them" is a fat, happy life of opulence.

Kind of like Ukraine under Russian rule; "if you are hungry, eat one of your babies.  We need the food in Russia for our own use."

At least under Communism, Michelle will get her wish, and the vast majority of Americans will not be overweight anymore.  Hell, they'll be lucky if they aren't suffering from scurvy.

Submitted by Apollo11 on Mon, 07/16/2012 - 4:40pm.

Yes, indeed, I'm proud. I've seen the years of sacrifice (very few writers ever get published, let alone have multiple publishers). Even fewer writers (less than 3%) are also able to make a living out of it. That said, it saddens me to think that this is what we've come to. In my prior career I was an international executive and had many associates who would've welcomed the opportunity to live and work in the United States.

After all, success is an American ideal. It's what draws people to America, with the hope to find an environment in which one can freely innovate and prosper and, most importantly, keep the fruits of one's own labor. It's one of the few countries in the world where people are still willing to take risks and where companies like Bain Capital are willing to invest in such ventures using private (not taxpayer EXTRACTED) money. We have a president who "shoots low"... Yes you, too, can have a nice middle-class existence with an OK vacation, just don't aspire or shoot too high. I don't want a president that shoots for "average" or expects that for me. I want a president that aspires that every American has the opportunity to achieve greatness and provides the climate to make that possible. Class warfare, redistributionalism, crony capitalism and diminuation of others' success doesn't cut it.

Submitted by Barabbus on Mon, 07/16/2012 - 5:52pm.

to explain! All of us know people in our lives who pushed themselves a little harder, took risks, sacrificed large chunks of their lives whether it was continuing on with their education or clocking 60 hours a week trying to get a business going. Don't you, or your wife, EVER feel as though you need to make a defense of what you've achieved! I work hard too, but I know in my heart that I didn't apply myself as hard as others I have known.
Cripes! I hate these people! They are repugnant for what they're trying to do to people like you and your wife. It's sickening to watch.

Submitted by killa37 on Mon, 07/16/2012 - 11:02pm.

Da Killa has been flat on his back with some mean flu since Saturday evening, so I haven't even sat down in front of my computer until now. And it's been so many years that I had any kind of illness (besides mental) that it's really taking a toll on me.
But this whole episode, with Boy BlahBlah flappin' his stupid purple gums about this 'business' crap, didn't go by unnoticed to me, because I had the radio on.......................and a lot of you people here at NB know that I've been self-employed for decades, so - just like any others in the private sector and business world - I don't take kindly to this kind of stupidity, especially coming from a petulant pouty punk-ass prick posing as a president!!! This guy has continued to demonstrate that having no class can be a bottomless pit...................................but the bothersome thing about it isn't his own stupidity or delusion, it's the fact that there are people who agree with him!!!

And as for upcountrywater's (aka Maui no ka oi) so-called 'rant'????? I give it a two thumbs up!!! Especially in context to what Boy Baraka said about us!!! It's a no-brainer.........................he doesn't have the slightest idea of what he's talking about, but he continuesto degrade us at every turn.

Thanks a lot, gang - for your kind words. And, of course, it must be the Asian Flu - since I'm here in Asia!!! it's about 7:05 AM here on Teusday, and I'm not sure how I"m giong yet. I have much to do, but I feel weak, and I don't feel sharp - and I've got some technical issues to deal with at the jobsite. I think the only plus right now is that the rest of my employees are also sick!!! So there's nobody there!!!

I've just been drinkng water - maybe I'll try the tea. I have no appetite to speak of - since Saturday evening.

I've had some discussions in the past with ol' Jer about 'racism' and this whole 'haole' business, but I'm not feeling animated enough to enter the fray. I'll just leave it said that 'racism' has always been a big part of living and growning up in Hawaii, and that doesn't even include 'blacks', because there traditionally haven't been very many of them here. But they get it too, believe me. Since I grew up as a 'haole boy' over here, I'm gotten my share of 'racism'...........but I always handled it with my typical good cheer and offbeat humor, which would really piss some people off..................especially when I laid it back on them!!!

Submitted by killa37 on Tue, 07/17/2012 - 1:23pm.

Well, I've had right-wing hate radio on, and as far as the TV goes, what I have watched was Queen in concert, back in their heyday (boy, they were good, whether you like them or not!!!), a music documentary about Ted Nugent, some soccer action, some surfing replay, and some various history/military channel. I rarely watch the news on TV - actually, I rarely watch TV - but in the afternoons it is cooler in my den than in my bedroom, so I've been crawling out there to lie down!!!

Actually,as much as Boy Baraka's voice - and mentality - make me sick, I continue to be amazed that a guy like this hit the bigtime...................I know we've had a few morons as Presidents before, but they all pale in comparison to him. But that is indicitive of the shallowness and idiocy of our voting public and the StateRun Media..................none of them seems to be embarrassed or ashamed at such a pathetic little punk.............and consequently, he's having success beyond his wildest dreams with his agenda. Of course, that doesn't give much credit to 'our side' either, does it???

Thanks, Bou - I'm comin' around..............I worked yesterday and today. And I'm still ridin' the fence (a la Colon Powell) on this Disquotech thing.............but, as it stands right now, I'm gonna hafta (as my dear old Dad would have said) 'sh*t or get off the pot'!!

And that line about 'I've got nothing to say, so I'm only going to say it once'??? I use that on my employees all the time - it's kind of an 'inside' jobsite joke - along with a few hundred other useless and hopeless phrases. Our jobsites are NO PLACE for anyone with thin skin, self-importance, lack of sense of humor, overwrought egos, or drama queens.......................so you can imagine that NO libs could last 30 minutes around us!!!!

Like I"ve said before, just let me have Boy Baraka - wearing his Mommy jeans and a pair of rubber boots, with a shovel in his softer-than-silk spindly ET hands - try and last 15 minutes of a concrete pour............between the veterans, the energy that it takes, the weather, the ability to stay ahead of the demands of the work, and the fortitude to put up with the non-stop verbal abuse that he would encounter. And then, if he can last 15 minutes................he STILL has to write the check for the material AND the labor, as well as all the overhead, insurance, taxes, etc, etc. etc!!!

But, then, somebody else did this for me, right???????????????????????

Yeah...................chump.........................

'Insinuating'???? I'm not doing any god**m insinuating!!!! I'm tawking TROOF here, Ms. Bull Dyke!!! Maybe that's why I can't get a straight answer!!!

Same tactics as Eric (With)Holder..................these people are well-trained at deception, deceit, and duplicitousness, yet beyond that talent, they don't give any indication that they're particularly smart. But look where they are in our 'chain of command'!!!
And we thought Janet Reno was a moron..............................this Butch seems to revel in her position as the most dangerous dyke in the country, and I think that she PURPOSLY makes such ass-backwards rules in order to keep the 'normal' people of this country nervous, while allowing any possible enemies or threats to have an easier time doing whatever it is that they are trying to do.

We KNOW that Boy Baraka is a non-American and an anti-American............but it still surprises me that so many of these other people who 'SHOULD' be 'Americans' can fall prey to the same mentality. This Butch has brought '1984' into the present tense.

Hell, these seditious traitors don't even try and disguise it anymore - look at Boy Baraka these days - it it two middle fingers and a loud F**K YOU at us on a daily basis...................like some little gang punk tryiing to impress the gang leaders to let him join - and what does the StateRun Media do??? They come up with a never-ending string of convoluted and disillusioned explanations of what he 'meant' to be saying..............when, in actuality, he DID say F**K YOU AMERICA!!!! If this were a business, they would have been fired on the spot and unceremoniously thrown out the door on their sorry butts!  The only reason that happens is because those companies can't afford to keep them around until the next cycle or something, something happens, you deal with it and deal with it RIGHT NOW!
