Fury Spreads: Catholic Leaders Join MRC Outrage Over Network Silence on Catholics vs. Obama Lawsuit
Nine prominent Catholic leaders have joined the Media Research Center to voice outrage over the broadcast networks deliberately withholding news of the momentous 43 Catholic entities suing the Obama administration for violating their religious freedoms. They represent major organizations including the Acton Institute, Cardinal Newman Society, SBA List and others. More are coming in every hour.
There are 60 million Catholics in the US. The Catholic vote will be the most important swing vote this year. So it’s not just a major policy issue, it is one with massive political implications. Yet, 19 seconds of news coverage remains the only attention given by the evening broadcast networks. Two days after news broke, the tally is:
- ABC World News – ZERO seconds of coverage. But, last night there was time for a full report on sleep apnea and Katie Couric discussing how she met Queen Elizabeth; how she wore a peach coat and "a lovely peach hat."
- NBC Nightly News – ZERO seconds of coverage. But last night there was time to squeeze in a story on a new computer app that shows America's eating habits, "graphic evidence" of how we eat badly late at night.
- CBS Evening News – a brief 19 seconds of coverage on the evening the lawsuit became public. ZERO coverage last night. But there was time in the broadcast for a Cincinnati Reds baseball fan lucky enough to catch two home runs in left field.
“The intentional, deafening silence continues,” stated Brent Bozell, MRC President, “and we are not the only ones concerned. This deliberate censorship must come to an end.”
“Beginning with the 367,000 people who protested Notre Dame's 2009 honoring of President Obama, Catholics across America have united to oppose unconstitutional threats to their rights of conscience and religious freedom. Now in an unprecedented move, the US Catholic Conference of Bishops, along with over 40 other catholic institutions, has sued the Obama administration. And rather than covering what is perhaps the most significant lawsuit in the history of the US Catholic Church, the media have deliberately chosen to ignore the story outright. It is shameful and yet another example of why Americans are increasingly getting their news elsewhere.”
Patrick Reilly
President, Cardinal Newman Society
“The suit by the Catholic Bishops, and other catholic institutions, against the Obama administration is a courageous and bold move in defending the religious freedom of all citizens; especially women and the unborn. As members of religious institutions and leaders in business, women must not be coerced to pay for insurance policies which violate their most deeply held religious convictions when it comes to the rights of the unborn. As a result of not covering this lawsuit against the Administration, the media are deliberately choosing to side with the administration’s attack on religious liberty.”
Marjorie Dannenfelser
President, SBA List
“Any national media outlet that fails to report the obvious raping of our First Amendment rights by this Health and Human Service mandate, is trumpeting either woeful incompetence or shameless bias. The Catholic Church didn't pick this fight, but it knew that if it didn't fight back now, every religion would eventually lose, and America would be fundamentally redefined.”
Father Jonathan Morris
Fox News Analyst
Program Director, The Catholic Channel on Sirius XM radio
"Catholics are united like never before in defending our religious liberty. Unfortunately, the media are silencing our voices through their lack of coverage. They are deliberately choosing to ignore what is perhaps the most significant lawsuit ever filed by the Catholic Church in the history of this country."
Matt Smith
President, Catholic Advocate
“The elite media may attempt to ignore what is about to happen in our nation regarding religious freedom, but believers of all religious traditions, and even non-believers who are fair minded, are about to retrieve America’s rich and firm tradition of religious liberty, sending intolerant secularists into retreat. It’s about time.”
Fr. Robert Sirico
President, Acton Institute
Author of “In Defense of the Free Market: The Moral Case for a Free Economy
"The Obama Administration's assault on religious liberty has united the Catholic Church in a way no one thought possible. Among those suing the Obama Administration Monday are some of the most prestigious Catholic institutions in America, with many more expected to follow. These organizations are united in their demand that the government end its unprecedented assault on a once cherished core constitutional principle. This issue and these lawsuits are historic. The media blackout on these lawsuits confirm the shameful prejudice that is growing against the Catholic Church in America."
Brian Burch
President, CatholicVote.org
“Religious liberty is a right we hold dear as Americans--and recent attacks on that right by the Obama Administration threaten not only Catholics, but everyone. For the sake of religious liberty, and for the lives of pre-born children, we support the courageous decision of 43 Catholic institutions to sue the current administration for the HHS mandate that would force them to purchase healthcare plans with contraceptives and abortifacients. Many of the major media outlets shocking non-coverage of such a historic news development is a wake up call to Americans to seek newsgroups that will not allow extreme pro-Obama bias to control their reporting.”
Lila Rose
President, Live Action
“The lawsuits by the University of Notre Dame and a broad range of other Catholic institutions against the Obama Administration are a major development in the important battle over religious freedom. They should be big news.”
Ed Whelan
President
Ethics and Public Policy Center
"On May 22, the New York Times did not run a front-page story on the 43 Catholic dioceses and institutions suing the Obama administration for violating the First Amendment; instead, a 459 word story was printed on p. 17. On the front page was a 4611 word piece slamming private Catholic and Protestant schools that qualified for a publicly funded scholarship program. And they have the audacity to ask for evidence of bias?"
Bill Donohue
President
The Catholic League

This is encouraging... thanks for reporting it.
Bible-believing Protestant leaders out there: Now would be a good time to speak up in solidarity.
Thank you MRC

Without the cattle prod that the MRC wields via this site and others (and remember, Drudge picks up NB articles numerous times a week), the media would never be forced to actually report the news.
We received Bozell's MRC video in the mail yesterday (along with a request for a hefty donation)....and after seeing this piece, I think we are probably going to write that check.
I'd encourage each and every one of you who want to defeat the liberal media to do the same. Every little bit helps. I think the NB membership is probably north of 60,000. It's time to hit that donate button, NB'ers.
We cannot allow Obama, the democrats, and their media shills to get away with this **** any longer. Now is the time to put the screws to them.

How can major news organizations miss out on reporting this huge development no matter how much they might be in tank for Obama? After all, this story was widely reported throughout the month of February when it was brewing. The fact that so many polls are not coming out showing Mitt Romney might easily trash Obama in the November election is enough caveat to deter the media from skewing or ignoring germane stories. Because no matter how much the obfuscate, truth always prevails and the people defy the media, at least some times.
If you cannot report heavily on this kind of move by the Catholic Church, then what religious issues would you report about? I guess only the alleged child abuse scandals are worth filling severals stories about within the shortest time possible. The media in America is on a slippery slope towards perpetual irrelevance.
Any other religious organizations who believe

The GREATER the weight of numbers, the HARDER it will be for the MSM to ignore it.
MORE to the point, the MORE Obama will realize the American people are AGAINST this garbage.

This was the straw that broke the camel's back.
Notre Dame found out that trying to negotiate with the devil just doesn't work,
I'm truly glad that this situation has made ND stand up again as a CATHOLIC university.

Let's hope Notre Dame stays strong. It takes parents of students and alumni to keep the pressure on these Catholic schools to keep them on the Catholic path.
Did you hear William Peter Blatty is suing Georgetown University? He's trying to get them to give up their affiliation to the Catholic Church since they refuse to abide by the Church's doctrine. Good for him. They need to decide who they really are, because at this point, many of these churches really aren't Catholic any more, and i don't want them identifying themselves as such.

The same can be said of those institutions and churches that call themselves "Christian", yet sanction and, in many cases, PROMOTE homosexual behavior and abortion. The attempt to alter the teaching of the Bible, God and Jesus Christ in order to accommodate those who insist upon giving in to sin is just plain folly. The last time I checked my Bible, God had not changed his mind about these things, and Jesus did not either. This goes for any sexual activity without the sanctity of marriage. Inconvenient as it may be, it happens to be the truth. These compromising "churches" do their members no good by condoning a sinful lifestyle. And they will discover this when God raptures His Church.

Was going to have this guy, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Miller_%28performance_artist%29 come for a week long seminar. Enough alumni and tuition paying parents/grandparents found out, flooded the university with complaints, and the school canceled it. The students were upset, but they aren't paying the bills.
Lesson learned, we must all speak up, weather it's to our churches, our schools, and especially to our governments.
Good for you and everyone else!!

You have to wonder what the HELL they were thinking!!
And yes, I did see that Blatty was suing; it's actually a Canon Lawsuit. He's not asking that Georgetown give up its affiliation, but asking that the Archbishop of Washington, and the Vatican, if necessary, strip Georgetown of its right to call itself Catholic.
Canon Lawsuit Seeks to Cut Georgetown's ties to the Catholic Church.
and
Here is the Indictment
Founded by Georgetown alumnus William T. Blatty, author of the best-selling book The Exorcist, the organization is seeking to file a canon law lawsuit seeking a declaration that Georgetown University is no longer entitled to call itself Catholic or Jesuit, or alternatively seeking a Visitation to correct what is described as the University's:
twenty-one year refusal to comply fully with the law of the Church through the implementation of the general norms of Ex corde Ecclesiae and its eleven year non-compliance with certain particular norms adopted for the United States, which has led directly and indirectly to the tolerance and promotion of deviations from authentic doctrinal and moral teachings by Georgetown University authorities and a long series of Scandals to the faithful through actions inconsistent with a Catholic identity.

In this day of new media and the intenet and smartphones and tablets, they can't possibly think that they can successfully keep this historic attack on religion from the masses. They are so wrapped up in their activism for their liberal causes and their hero President that they are writting their own obituaries by this blatantly biased behavior.
All religious organizations should be joining this effort because if it is not checked now, they will be next on the list.

3. Non-religious... Don't think you'll escape this Marxist onslaught. If they take the religious down, they'll do whatever they want with your rights too.

not going to happen as long as the churches/synagogues keep producing a message that many listeners interpret as a doctrine that coincides with the socialist mindset of a bureaucrat - give up your money to help others. Not enough people learn the difference between personally helping others and turning over that responsibility to the government or the consequences of such a decision.
