Open Thread: Liberals Ask UN to Stop Voter ID Laws

By NB Staff | March 15, 2012 | 09:53

A  A

For reasons known only to them, liberals in this country have decided that common-sense laws designed to have would-be voters present proof of identity before casting a ballot are inherently racist. They've ranted and raved against the laws (despite the fact that they've been held to be constitutional by the Supreme Court). Now, having failed repeatedly to block voter ID laws at the ballot box and in the legislatures, the NAACP has decided to sic the United Nations on its fellow Americans as Ken Blackwell and Ken Klukowski report:

The far left is making an unprecedented two-track move to derail states’ efforts to protect the integrity of the ballot box for this November’s elections. While the Department of Justice (DOJ) is blocking state efforts, liberal activists are taking this issue to the United Nations Human Rights Council. [...]

the NAACP is taking the issue of voter ID laws to the United Nations Human Rights Council (the successor to the Human Rights Commission), claiming that such ballot-box integrity measures violate the human rights of racial minorities under international law.

So they go to the United Nations. Specifically, to a body tasked with protecting human rights. Just to be clear, the nations comprising this supposed champion of human rights include dictatorial and authoritarian regimes like China, Cuba and Russia.

Let’s give the NAACP credit; they went to the undisputed experts on this subject. They’ve taken this issue of ballot-box integrity to nations that know all about voter fraud and rigging elections, because they do it all the time. Maybe these nations could even provide pointers, as Vladimir Putin’s “election” makes crystal clear that some of these nations have written the book when it comes to subverting the democratic process.

It seems that Holder has gone

Submitted by ricklail on Thu, 03/15/2012 - 2:50pm.

It seems that Holder has gone after some states to punish them over the voter ID laws. Oklahoma has one and so does Indiana, I think that is right. Those states have not really challenged Obama on immigration so they get a pass.

And the UN can do exactly WHAT?

Submitted by drsamherman on Thu, 03/15/2012 - 10:05am.

It has no constitutional authority to do a damned thing. It cannot interfere in US government at any level, nor can it interfere with any state government at any level.

If it gets to be too much of an annoyance, send bulldozers to the area between 45th and 46th Streets in New York and send the whole works into the river.

As for the NAACP and their cheap political theatrics, perhaps they should try group therapy for attention-seeking personality disorder.

Obviously ...

Submitted by Fredy on Thu, 03/15/2012 - 10:49am.

While never studied, there is clearly a belief that massive voter fraud is a staple of the Democratic party. Democrats themselves fear any measure that might curtail any of these ballot stuffing measures.

For example, how likely is it that poll workers could now be caught stuffing ballot boxes with votes of dead people? Under most state rules today, these votes could have been cast by unknown parties giving cover for the poll workers. With a photo id requirement, these same workers will now be forced to explain how those ballots were submitted.

United States of Obama?

The real outrage is that  I just did a Google search for "Obama face on flag" and in 3 pages of results, there was not a single reference to it by any of the legacy media:  Not ABC, not CBS, not NBC, not MSNBC, not CNN.

Ditto for the ABC, MSNBC, and CNN and CBS websites, where I also did searches.

the sad thing

Submitted by spepper on Thu, 03/15/2012 - 11:35am.

The sad thing is that if the United Nations did in fact mount an organized campaign against states which "dare" to require identification of prospective voters, even though identification is ALREADY A REQUIREMENT for basic things like driving a car, the federal admininstration under the current occupant would not do a DAMNED THING to stop them. Hell they are the ones setting the dubious example of attacking state governments for daring to require identification.

Voter Requirments

Submitted by xyzzypoofs on Thu, 03/15/2012 - 12:11pm.

1) People should be required to pass an IQ test to get a Drivers License. 2) A Drivers License should be required to vote (whether the voter has a car/drives or not. 3) Anyone who believes that a FOREIGN "governing" agency should have any input, or precedence, in America's Constitutional laws should be denied a Driver's License automatically since they obviously would fail the first requirement.

I hope the UN Human Rights Council accommodates them

Submitted by Galvanic on Thu, 03/15/2012 - 12:14pm.

And here's why --

1) The UNHRC has a ridiculous record, and no jurisdiction over anything.

2) The state's merely point toward such democratic UNHRC members as Cuba, China, and Saudi Arabia to illustrate how Orwellian this appeal is.

3) The US is also a member of the UNHRC this year. If it comes to a vote, the US will either have to vote No and piss off the NAACP, vote Yes and piss off most Americans, or abstain which is as good as a Yes. In other words, it puts the Obama Administration in a very uncomfortable spot in an election year.

So, bring it on, NAACP. Just be ready for the ads from the Super PACs listing you and your allies in this circus stunt.

based on their willingness to engage. My example is from the History or Discovery channel. I think it was in Serbia where a bunch of European blue helmets were supposed to protect a village. The enemy came in and said, "We're going to attack." The commander of the blue helmets responded by negotiating their escape. That is, the blue helmet soldiers were dancing because they got to live and go home. The village they were supposed to defend had a much worse fate.

I haven't had any kind of respect for them since.

Oh, and I didn't mean to offend any squirrel monkeys out there.

Can Romney win without the South?

1. Can we in the media really keep referring to Romney as the GOP "frontrunner," given that -- while he still leads in delegates -- he can't seem to win decisive victories in a region of the country that is critical to Republicans' success in the general election: the South?

2. Is it possible that a Republican can be elected president without carrying the South?

3. Will President Obama -- seeing that Romney, still the likely GOP nominee, is struggling to connect to voters in the South -- respond by putting a few Southern states in play, and make a major push to win them in the general election?

It's the smart move. And Obama, for all his failings as president, is also a smart campaigner

...come on GOP, time to wake up!

The UN is a great organization they told us

Submitted by lrgon on Thu, 03/15/2012 - 7:09pm.

It was established for world peace.

The UN has supporters on all sides of the equation.

George H.W. Bush told the world that if UN troops moved into Iraq that we've have " a real chance at this new world order."

Clinto sent US troops into Bosnia and they were forced to wear UN insignia, blue helmets and all.

The myth of the UN is similar to the creation of the labor unions; the line goes something like this: "the UN was needed at first and it was good idea but the UN has become corrupted."

Well, not exactly. The UN was created for one purpose: to take away rights and to disarm the member nations' civilian populations.

A disarmed populace is at the mercy of the government. Think Ruwanda and the murder of nearly a million unarmed Tutsi and moderate Hutu by government supported radical Hutu. The UN was there in Ruwanda but they were told to not interfere in stopping the bloodshed. The person giving that order was Kofi Annan who years later would rise to be Secretary General of the UN.

Now think of the words of George H.W. Bush at the UN: "We have a real chance at this New World order."
