Open Thread: Does 'Super Tuesday' Matter?
Today's starter topic of discussion is "Super Tuesday," a day when many states hold their primary elections simultaneously. In the past, the large number of primaries has been important in presidential campaigns. Not this year, according to Washington Times columnist Joseph Curl:
On Super Tuesday this time around, just 20 percent of the available delegates will be in play. In 2008, more than 50 percent were allotted on that single day. Plus, with more states now having proportional division of delegates rather than winner-take-all, no candidate will be remotely close to the 1,144 needed to clinch the nomination. Not even close enough to scare anyone out of the race.
The process is marred by the fact that only Mr. Romney and Mr. Paul will be on the Virginia ballot — the other two candidates missed the filing deadline. Said Mr. Sabato: “Our guesstimate of Romney’s delegate edge — 49 over Santorum — comes almost entirely from Virginia. Subtract out Virginia, and Super Tuesday becomes essentially a draw.”
Since its inaugural in 1984, Super Tuesday has often been decisive. In 1998, Gov. Michael Dukakis won the day’s largest share of delegates and went on to take the nomination. In 1992, Bill Clinton locked down the South and eventually the party’s nod. In 1996, Bob Dole swept the day’s seven states, and in 2000, both Al Gore and George W. Bush seized the day, and their party’s nominations.
But in 2008, 24 states fled the traditional March Super Tuesday, moving their elections to early February. Still, Sen. John McCain cruised to victory then and Mr. Romney dropped out a few days later.
Normally, just three weeks separates the big day from the New Hampshire primary; this time, there’s an eight-week gap (and about 300 debates that changed the landscape almost daily).
So, no freedom just yet. Instead, there’ll be months more of a grueling campaign — and months more of the same old gruel.
What's your take? How long do you see the presidential campaign continuing on the Republican side of things?

"Super Tuesday"
Submitted by CobraMan on Mon, 03/05/2012 - 2:08pm.
"Super Tuesday?"
I have to ask, just when did politics rise to the level of a National Sport, compete with "pre-game" political "analysis," by Network "political consultants" (a.k.a "experts"), no less, and live, around the clock, play by play (or district by district, if you prefer) TV coverage? I mean, really, this isn't even the general election, and the networks act as if the second coming of Christ or something!
I hate to break it to people, like Obama (or Dan "this could go so many ways" Rather), but elections, especially primaries, don't really have that big of an effect on the general population, no matter how important each politician believes themselves to be, or how much the press idolizes, or demonizes, them.
Contrary to "popular" belief, the "consequences" of most elections are rather limited here in America. People will still work, love, play, eat, excrete, whatever, much the same as they did just a year or two ago no matter WHO is the Political Giant of the season, no matter WHO makes the "political play of the week."
I don't know if has even occurred to the political junkies, those "politiphiles" as I like to call them. But we, as a country, have been arguing the same "issues," fighting the same political battles, for decades, centuries even, and no much has actuality changed. other than a general improvement in our lifestyles themselves. Despite all the political rhetoric, despite all the "conservative" or "progressive" legislation passed over the last two generations, people still act pretty much the same way they did over 200 years ago, when all this political theater In America was in it's infancy.
For example, according to the politiphiles, the "gulf" between the "rich" and the "poor" still exists, is even getting larger, just as it did 200 years ago, and it is an "issue" of such extreme importance, of such immanent danger to society as a whole that something MUST be done, right away, to "address' it, even though we, as an entire nation, are a hell of a lot better off now than 200 years ago.
Contrary to what our politicians have told us, in their apparent quest for political domination, the days of mass starvation that have been predicted for all this time has not occurred. The threat of mass poverty destroying society itself has not happened, and hundereds of millions of Americans are not sweating and toiling in the fields of despair, as we have been told will happen if we don't vote for so-and-so. But what is it that the politicians, and the politiphile press, keep telling us, day after day, election after election? We just one election away from total annihilation, just as they told us 200 years ago!
Well, hay, politiphiles, do me a favor and wake me up the next time we undergo that self-annihilation because we voted for the wrong person as President, or Governor, or Mayor. I have seemed to miss it every time it has happen.

Obama's Budget Cuts Targeting the Military
Submitted by Blonde on Mon, 03/05/2012 - 2:32pm.
Allen West sends out a weekly "constituent e-mail"....and here's a part of what he wrote this week:
We had our first hearing of the Subcommittee on Military Personnel of the House Armed Services Committee this week and the news is not good. The Obama administration’s proposed defense budget calls for military families and retires to pay sharply more for their healthcare, while leaving unionized civilian defense workers’ benefits untouched. As well, we are looking at cutting close to 130,000 uniformed troops, but cutting only 7,000 Department of Defense civilians.
In addition, the Obama administration is looking to create a BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) commission to examine changing the military retirement system. If you do the analysis, you find that less than one percent of the American adult population draws a retirement from serving in the United States Military. The idea of taking out the United States economy budget woes on our military is despicable.
The most alarming points about the healthcare plan include:
- Increases between 30 percent to 78 percent in TRICARE annual premiums for the first year. After that, the plan would impose five-year increases ranging from 94 percent to 345 percent. That's more than three times current levels.
- According to Congressional assessments, a retired Army Colonel with a family currently paying $460/yr for healthcare will pay $2,048.
- The new plan also hits active duty personnel by increasing co-payments for pharmaceuticals and eliminating incentives for using generic drugs.
- Veterans will also be hit with a new annual fee for the TRICARE for Life program, on top of the monthly premiums already being paid. In addition, some benefits will become “means-tested,” making them similar to the welfare system than as a benefit for Military service.
The disturbing issue here is that this Administration seemingly believes the fiscal woes of exorbitant debt and deficits can be remedied on the backs of those who have been willing to give their lives for America. The real goal appears to be to try and force Veterans into the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) healthcare exchanges, by forcing them to opt out of TRICARE because it will eventually become unaffordable.
Also on my mind as I'm writing this--- this Administration's willingness to continue to appease and apologize to radical Islamists. When is President Obama going to stand with Israel against this present evil in our time? I, for one, will not be quiet about this issue, until this President makes it abundantly clear his loyalty is with America's one true ally in the Middle East, Israel

As I stated elsewhere.
Submitted by The Vet on Mon, 03/05/2012 - 3:15pm.
A small increase in Tricare is not unreasonable. Tricare deductables and limits and the Tricare Prime fee has not changed since the 90's. But as usual, they abuse our trust. Tricare Prime going from 460 to 2000 is insane.
For those of you that don't know what Tricare Prime is --- Tricare Prime is what retirees use when they are close to a military installation. You pay a set fee for the year - currently about $460. Then you visit the military doctors on base for any doctor visits. You arrive and are put on a waiting list for the day. Active duty come before you so you wait for an opening. Essentially you are visiting an active duty officer doctor. He gets paid the same paycheck every month so outside of whatever medical supplies you use in a visit, no money would ever change hands anyway. And the nursing and admin staff are all enlisted getting a paycheck for their jobs regardless of whether you visit or not. They are there to serve the active duty.
So the $460 goes to whatever you use medically in a visit. The paper you sit on. The disposable gloves the doctor uses. X-ray film. Etc. And any prescriptions you get there. All the people get active duty pay whether you go or not.
So to go from $460 to $2000 is just a hair bit insane. And more disincentives for people to stay for 20 years

I always thought he was a just-the-news kind of guy. But lately, a lot of his stories and/or headlines seem to me to be pushing some agenda or other.
There have been a few recently, the specifics of which I don't recall, but today, linking to this story:
Obama, Netanyahu Give No Sign of Narrowing Gap on Iran
the first paragraph of which is this:
Reuters) - President Barack Obama appealed to Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday to give sanctions more time to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions, but the Israeli prime minister gave no sign of backing away from possible military action.
Drudge's takeaway and headline is Barack to Bibi: I've got your back!
I mean, Come ON!!
The slight reference to that is this:
Obama took a double-barreled approach, seeking to assure Netanyahu that the United States was keeping the military option open against Iran and always "has Israel's back," but also urging Israeli patience to allow sanctions and diplomacy to work.
Newsbusters pals, please read that article and tell me if you think the main idea of it is that the US has Israel's "back."
My takeaway from this is: Don't believe Drudge's headlines.
