Open Thread: Food Stamp Nation?
Today's topic: The growing number of people dependent on federal largesse is becoming a problem for the nation's budget. A new study by the Heritage Foundation shows that the number of people who receive cash payments from the federal government is at all-time highs:
Skyrocketing food-stamp enrollments over the last few years have played a notable role in this year’s presidential race, but it’s not just food stamps that have exploded — it’s entitlements, generally: housing subsidies, Medicaid rolls, college loans and much, much more.
And the trend is threatening to chip away at the very pillars that keep America’s civil society functioning.
Today, one in five Americans — 67 million of us, all told — rely on federal aid in obtaining housing, food, income, health care or education.
The dependent population has been growing for years, of course. But the “Index of Dependence on Government,” published annually by The Heritage Foundation, shows remarkably sharp spikes in dependence in the years since President Obama entered the Oval Office.
Over the two-year period 2009-2010, the number of people receiving aid from the feds grew 7.5 percent. And the payments got much more generous, too. In 2010, the average recipient of federal assistance collected benefits worth $32,750. That’s more than the average per-capita disposable income in America.
Dependency-related programs now cost $2.5 trillion annually. That’s roughly 70 percent of the federal budget.

The real outrage is that those funds are not counted as income when deciding who is "poor."
How about if you add those entitlements to the actual base income? The poverty line is around $22,000 for a family of 4, to which is added the entitlement, totaling about $55,000 a year for that family, and they are still classified as "poor."

It's not the food stamps that's the problem

It's the punitive practices being forced on private sector companies which prevents them from hiring as many people as they would like to, but also that existing places of businesses are going out of business due to lack of sales/commerce that those people employed are let go.
Those lack of sales are being caused by people not spending as much money as they used to because of the high price of gasoline and food, especially food prices being forced to be raised due to the cost of gasoline to deliver them. So some businesses will suffer because their customers do not have enough money left over to spend. I know several places in town where I live that they had to raise prices because the delivery trucks added some extra surcharges and fees because of the gas prices being so high. A diesel truck that used to cost a couple hundred dollars to fill up would now cost around 1000 bucks to fill up.
And then the price of gas/fuel is high because of what this bogus potus has done with the illegal oil moraturium against oil companies to drill even off shore even though other countries like China and Russia are drilling just off our own shore lines, so lack of production of oil in this country has decreased significantly. Not to mention other petroleum products made from oil, the prices of those have gone up as well, pretty much the thousands of things made from it are now at least double the cost of what it used to be.
It's a HUGE domino effect and one that's being pursued by this administration as a way of breaking this country, it's not just about food stamps. Food stamps are a symptom, not a cause of the spending going on. The cause is the bogus potus and the slime dems in Congress from 2006 on.(even if they lost the House, they still control the Senate)

I can't tell you the last time gas was under $4.00 around here...........and if I could, it was still in the high $3.00 range. But, hey - we'll be Brazil's best customer, and the Canadians will ship their oil, by way of Warren Buffets trains, to their west coast for transport ot China.............maybe the Chinese will sell it back to us, and we can be THEIR best customer too.
Of course, we've got more oil here than the damn mooooooooooooooooooooslems..........but, as MC Hammer so ironically noted - 'you can't touch that'!!! Or.......even as the Beatles said - 'You can't do that'!!!

While this may look like bad news and a negative trend to anybody with any common sense or sense of responsibility and ethics and self-respect, it may actually warm the hearts of the REGIME and others who are actually TRYING for this result.........knowing
that the more people they can get dependant on them, the better chance they have of controlling them.
And on that note, I was reading a little story about a note that Boy BullSh*t wrote to some unemployed carpenter - telling him that the 'recovery' was probably going to take another couple of years -which, to me, is Obamaspeak for 'vote for me'. But I liked the guy's response - after he had sold the handwritten note to pay for some truck repairs. He said of Obama - 'he's a lying SOB'!!

My son worked with me for 35 years and payed into the system all those years. He is now disabled and is denied medicaid ane other benefits given free to illegals and resident loafers because his wife works a part time job.
There appears to be a big sign at our borders that reads "Come one come all and share my stash. Free guns to all criminals".

The father who famously shot his daughter's laptop (on YouTube) as punishment for her snotty comments on Facebook has been investigated by both the police and Child Protective Services after "someone who was concerned" reported him to local authorities.
My question is, why is it illegal/dangerous to shoot your laptop? What in his act (watch the video) warranted investigation?
BTW, the cops apparently said "good on you". Not sure about CPS.

In his defense he is at his breaking point with the kid. Better to shot the laptop than her. Since kids live in a high tech world maybe YouTube and Facebook are the best way to get his words across. When I was a teen my dad took the tag off the car i was paying for when I did something real bad. Kids today would have no fear of the law and drive the car anyway.

One thing to note about this father, and his mentioning of the mother who was in agreement with him, he wasn't ranting and raving like a lunatic shooting off in any willy nilly direction with his gone. He was very very deliberate about the whole thing, which scares some people. This was even demonstrated in his shooting of the laptop, it wasn't some "gangsta" style rapid shooting, he did it carefully and deliberately too.
I've heard stories of something like this before where a father/husband would take something that offended him and just outright shoot it and they feel very justified in doing so versus doing something like taking it back to the store and selling it or something.
I wouldn't be afraid of this guy, but at the same time, I would be very respectful of him because I wouldn't want to piss him off. ;-)

I think I also heard him mention "step-mother", which to me indicates he's divorced from the girl's mother....yet they are both in agreement about shooting the laptop! IOW, not going to play the "set the parents against each other" game.
I would have loved to have seen this young lady's face as she watched her father's video. I would imagine she's going through the five stages of grief about now for her dear, departed laptop, as she comes to the realization that she brought it on herself.

I would have loved to have seen her expression as well as her friends who might have seen it but instead of going through any grief for her laptop, she should be telling herself "I better fly right and respect my parents." Her friends should be as well. Well, she SHOULD, but if what we saw of what led up to all this, I seriously doubt it.
She should be glad she's not living with a Muslim father who would have killed her at the drop of a hat.

I was noticing the traffic in the background. I live in the country, but we still have a distance limit (I think 150 feet) in which you aren't supposed to discharge a firearm, and then it has to be away from traffic. No one around here really cares. You can tell when a neighbor has gotten a new gun or trying a new ammo load because it sounds like Beirut for a while.
Anyway, I noticed he turned toward traffic and was hoping that no ahole neighbors or locals that recognized him would call the county.

Here I don't know of any law within 150 ft of a highway. I could be arrested in my own back yard for carrying a gun. I live within 1000' of a school. My neighbor behind me is kind of like yours. When he gets a new gund he has to fire a bunch of rounds through it.

Saw a poll this morning that as of right now Obama leads Rumney and Sanatarium by about 9 points. Those 9 come from independents voters who claim their economic situation is better. You could very well be right, but as I see it, the Dear Ruler will probably go through one more election cycle - if only for the sake of appearances, before he declares himself Barry the Boy Caesar, the Most High, Exalted Dear Ruler, Ist Amerikan Premier, and Potentate for Life.
As I see it, another half to three-quarters of a million or so layoffs should give him enough dependents to effectively cancel out the votes of the net tax producers.

And let's not forget his ace-in-the-hole when all those ballots "mysteriously" turn up in the trunks of ACORN (or whatever they are calling themselves now) and SEIU goons in whatever districts the Dear Ruler may fall a little short vote-wise.

I don't think Obama will do anything if forced to leave the WH but his followers will do the worst thing they can do to this nation - make him a martyr. If he leaves as a self/media selected martyr to liberal ideas and racial politics instead of leaving as a failed President there is a real danger of his less socially acceptable followers becoming overcome by their need for social justice. It will also stand for several generations in the liberal doctrine as an example of the intolerance of America and especially the core racial hatred of white America.

My family grew up on raw milk for generations. Hell, the people who wrote the Constitution drank it, too.
I smell the influence of "Big Dairy," behind this, as well as government's predosposition to tyranny.
At least some people are waking up to the FDA's war on raw dairy products.

Since my tomatoes are coming along swimmingly, I have been having caprese salad for lunch every day. Which of course had me looking at recipes for fresh mozarella. I think raw milk would be great, and I'd really, really like to find a source for raw goat's milk.
I'm really cheesed (sorry).....a woman in Obamaworld can take whatever she wants OUT of her body, but can't put raw milk IN it!

As for caprese salad, you can make a meal out of it if you add enough mozzarella and some crusty bread, or croûtons made from the aforementioned crusty bread. :-)
Or you can lay off the cheese a little and serve it right ahead of my spinach lasagna.

You know, I'm a big believer in rewards for success. Having said that, the lib dems are sure big believers in the exact opposite, such as a medal/ribbon for restraint in a war zone(IE not firing back at the enemy who wants to kill you). Well, guess what, in that wonderful new budget of the most holy Lord and Savior DuhOne, the TSA is basically billing any American who wishes to fly for their services and will charge more for one way trips and etc.
In other words, you're paying them to grope you some more. And they don't and won't have any success to crow about while doing it. Get this, there's even a proposal that "permits" the DHS to raise that fee on their own, so the passengers get to be groped AND screwed! Glory Hallelujah, this is great!
Everyone screwed some more in budget!
