Open Thread: Santorum Wins Missouri, Colorado, and Minnesota

By NB Staff | February 08, 2012 | 10:01

A  A

With all the focus on Newt Gingrich versus Mitt Romney of late, former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum not only reminded everyone of his presence once again, he did so in a sweep--taking caucus victories yesterday in the important states of Colorado, Minnesota, and Missouri. He was not awarded any delegates for these victories, however, so the question for today is, how much do Santorum's triumphs count? A lot, not much, or somewhere in between?

Rick Santorum jolted the Republican presidential race Tuesday with a three-state sweep of nominating contests in Colorado, Missouri and Minnesota, puncturing Mitt Romney's claim to be the unstoppable front-runner.

Mr. Santorum's three victories—one in the Mountain West and two in the Midwest—give his campaign a much-needed burst of momentum while stirring doubt about Mr. Romney's abilities to woo conservatives to his side in important electoral swing states such as Missouri and Colorado. So far, Mr. Romney has won in states where he has devoted significant campaign time and advertising dollars.

In two of the states, Colorado and Minnesota, Mr. Romney had won by large margins in 2008. He was hugely favored in Colorado in the days leading up to the Tuesday caucus. Two of his top aides have deep experience in the state, and his campaign has been busy organizing there for months.

Of the eight nominating contests so far, Mr. Santorum has now won four, while Mr. Romney has won three and Newt Gingrich one—a tally that seemed unlikely on a few days ago. Until Tuesday, Mr. Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, had won only a single contest, a narrow victory in Iowa's Jan. 3 caucuses.

Fundemental Christian views do align with conservative ones...

Submitted by vrwc13 on Wed, 02/08/2012 - 11:14am.

For conservative Republican voters who can’t accept Ron Paul’s bring-the-troops-home foreign policy, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum seems to be emerging as the best alternative to Mitt Romney.

http://nbcpolitics.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/01/02/9899394-santorums-conservative-record-strong-but-with-a-couple-of-flaws

Santorum’s career rating from the American Conservative Union, based on dozens of roll call votes during his 16 years in Congress, was 88 out of 100, not quite as conservative as that of Ron Paul or Jim DeMint of South Carolina, for instance, but still ranking Santorum as one of most conservative Republicans in Congress.

A surprisingly good article from msnbc, that addresses the good and the not so good.

btw: look at Rmoneys wins so far - 'blue' states mostly.  Santorum picking up the 'red' ones.  And I expect that trend to continue through super Tuesday.

Submitted by jay_1975 on Wed, 02/08/2012 - 12:05pm.

"One of the criticisms I make is to what I refer to as more of a libertarianish right. … This whole idea of personal autonomy, well I don’t think most conservatives hold that point of view. Some do. They have this idea that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do, government should keep our taxes down and keep our regulations low, that we shouldn’t get involved in the bedroom, we shouldn’t get involved in cultural issues. You know, people should do whatever they want. Well, that is not how traditional conservatives view the world and I think most conservatives understand that individuals can’t go it alone. That there is no such society that I am aware of, where we’ve had radical individualism and that it succeeds as a culture."
Rick Santorum, NPR 2006

So, the guy who doesn't support individual liberty and wants to create laws based on his religious views is a "conservative"?

WELL!!! if this trend continues....

Submitted by Willis_Leon_Johnson on Wed, 02/08/2012 - 10:43am.

In 2010 elections, the People of Colorado chose Dan Maes to run for the Governors seat.

Unfortunately, Dan was NOT the 'chosen one' by the party elites.

No amount of backstabbing, lying, and curious vote counting could change the fact that the People did not like the fool that had been personally picked by the elitists.

It made no difference how much money the party elite spent pushing their lackey, the People told them to stick their choice in the corner and allow the PEOPLE TO CHOOSE THE PERSON THEY WANTED.

In order to punish those stupid voters that are too ignorant to understand that the elites are better at picking the candidates they can control...

The 'republican party' in Colorado, dumped the Peoples choice and backed a third party candidate for governor.

little tommy tancredo switched parties to give the elitists a choice, and no expense was spared to shove little tommy down our throats.

Oddly enough, little tommy LOST, The PEOPLES CHOICE lost, and we got a democrat for governor. BUT, in party politics, "It is always better to lose the election than to win with a candidate that cannot be controlled to do the bidding of the elite".

Will the national group of elitists push romnee into running as a third party to punish those stupid voters again?

Dan Maes was a liar and only in it for the mortgage payment. He was only the "people's choice" because Scott McInnis' plagiarism fiasco at the last minute. If Maes was so truly the "people's choice", then why did he only get 11% of the vote? Even registered Republicans couldn't stomach that loser and went for Tancredo and it was the independents that selected Hickenlooper.

He does a very good job of detailing the corruption and underhanded dealings of the 'republican elite' as well as the Tea Party wannabe groups in the State.

Dan Maes was a secret agent

Submitted by jay_1975 on Wed, 02/08/2012 - 12:46pm.

Dan Maes was a secret agent in Liberal, KS, wait, no he wasn't. He compared himself to Serpico and said he was an undercover agent, but he was just a uniformed cop who got fired for telling his fiance about the sting operation. He never received a check from Freda Poundstone, but he did, but it was for his mortgage and not his campaign, but he said it was for his campaign. He lied about how much money his campaign had raised and was called out when he had to publish the actual amounts which were much lower than he claimed (which he blamed on his wife and daughter, talk about integrity). He claimed to be a successful business executive but his tax returns showed that he was never really successful at anything or turned a profit. After Maes sold a failing company he started, he claimed that the new owner kept him on, but the owner refused to back that claim. The best was when Maes said Tancredo shouldn't be at the debates if he couldn't pull in at least 20% in the polls, then when Maes fell to 15%, he refused to back out of the debates. He was a piece of trash and the state rejected him soundly. I am sure with all of his vast business successes and undercover work, he would have no problem moving on with his life.
You cite a book by Maes to vindicate Maes? Really? I am sure OJ's book claims his innocence as well, does that make it true?

Your refusal to address six different cases of lying or misdeeds presented from six different sources shows your inability to think critically. You can't admit that Maes sucked and disregard all evidence to the contrary. Your only evidence of foul play is Maes' own words. Pretty shoddy evidence on your part. I did the research on my own.

YOU spout the party elitist lines just like a recording.

The State of Colorado has a democrat governor because the party elites REFUSED to accept the PEOPLES CHOICE and demanded the vote be split buy backing a third party candidate, ensuring a democrat win rather than accept the person THE PEOPLE CHOSE TO RUN FOR GOVERNOR.

The national party is doing exactly the same thing now.

The elitist snobs running the 'republican party' are extremely willing to send this nation down the tubes rather than accept the fact that the vast majority of the people do not want another 'lesser of two evils', and romney is not much 'lesser'.

If the people chose that loser, they weren't happy with that loser once they found out what a loser he was. If he was so much the peoples choice, then why didn't the people vote for him? Man, you not only drank the Maes kool-aid, but I think you made an extra gallon, put it in the fridge and still sip from it today. Get over it already. Your guy sucked, the voters of Colorado knew he sucked and voted for someone else. Even if Tancredo didn't run, it wouldn't have mattered as Hickenlooper took over 50% of the total votes. Maes would have been a loser in a two way race, just like he was in a three way race. No matter how you cut it, your "peoples choice" came in last and was soundly rejected by the people. Ok, time to stop the BS, are you Maes? Because if not, then you must be a Maes stalker.

I wouldn't bet on it

Submitted by CobraMan on Wed, 02/08/2012 - 2:17pm.

I wouldn't bet on Romney just yet. There's a very long way to go. This promises to be a long, contentious battle, the outcome of which won't be known until the finale Battle Royal of the National Convention is over. Romney can "win" as many "pledges" as he wants, but even if he "wins" the "pledges" of over half the delegates, there's no guarantee that the delegates will actually cast a vote for him during the Convention. Not that many States have laws that require the delegates to vote according to the results of the State primary or caucus "general" elections, you know.

"Pledged" delegates (and that all you really win in a Primary or Caucus, a "pledge") have changed their mind, and their vote, in the past, you know. There's really nothing to prevent them from doing the same in the future. If none of the candidates wins the required number of delegate votes in the Convention (1140, I believe), the battle will continue on and on, for days, possibly! It's happened before and it will happen again!

In this respect, Obama has the clear advantage. As he is running unopposed, ALL of the DNC delegates will cast their vote for him. There's no possibility of the GOP nominee to point to Obama and say: "He's not that well loved amongst the Democrats, you know. Just look how splintered the DNC delegates were." Well, guess what Obama is going to do, with the help of the MSM? I mean, really, they're already doing it!

Welcome to the Foo Foo Caucus!

Submitted by CobraMan on Wed, 02/08/2012 - 1:48pm.

"He was not awarded any delegates for these victories, however, so the question for today is, how much do Santorum's triumphs count?"

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Foo Foo Caucus! If at first you don't succeed, we'll give you two more chances, just like the Good Fairy did for Little Bunny Foo Foo!

You know, the caucus system isn't much different that the presidential election system. That system, too, gives the candidates three chances to win. First you need to "win" the "general election," then you need to "win" the Electoral vote (National Conventions, anyone?), and then, finally, you need to "win" confirmation by the House, kinda like how the party "committees" have to verify the "winner" of the "convention." Just as the Hose has the power to do with the Presidential election, the party "committee" can overturn the "apparent" results of the "convention" and tell everyone: sorry, everyone, we've changed your minds for you! Candidate X is now the Official Winner, just like they did for Santorum!

Why do we even bother with a "general election" anyways? The only thing it immediately accomplishes is to allow MSM types, like Dan Rather during the 2000 elections" to hyperventilate as to how "this could go in several directions."

I will never forget tuning into CBS at midnight and seeing Dan Rather trying so hard to "explain" to people just how Al Gore could still "win" the election by holding up a US map and pointing to each "key" state and saying "if this sate does this, and that state does that," only to have his own fellow stage member look to him and say: "the best Al Gore can hope to accomplish right now is a tie."

I've NEVER seen anyone try so hard to deny reality as Dan Rather did during the 2000 general election. That's the first time I've ever witnessed what can only be described as a "psychotic break," and on national TV, no less!

CNN presents Santorum as 'wishful thinking'

"Santorum, the 'coulda, shoulda, woulda' candidate"

http://www.cnn.com/2012/02/08/opinion/stanley-santorum/index.html?hpt=hp_c1

"All this amounts to Santorum being the "coulda-shoulda-woulda" candidate of 2012. If only his victory in Iowa had been reported accurately, he might have had bigger momentum going in to New Hampshire and South Carolina. And if only conservatives had coalesced around him rather than Gingrich, he would be the front-runner. And if only Republicans voted on the basis of what they believe in rather than what they think is electable..."

...well just maybe it's not to late for Repubicans to vote on what they believe...

'Cause the Dems/liberals/msm have to be a little worried right now:

- the Wizard of Ob has pissed off the Catholics, and Santorum is one. Hmmm, could spell trouble as the the Catholic vote could shift big time

- the youth have become disinchanted with the Wizard of OB, and Santorum isn't another McCain/Dole type

- if Santorum can find a way to garner even more of the women voters, then

...yeah, the Dems/liberals/msm have a right to be worried (already throwing out ad hominem with: "your GOP buddies didn't like you").

Santorum cannot win the election. Neither can Newt. Romney is the Republican party's best bet, and no one in the party seems to like him.

I don't see any reason why he can't be elected. History is full of examples of candidates "coming from behind" and winning an election, despite what the majority of the press was saying at the time.. Lincoln was one, Obama another. I do remember how the majority of the press, and the Democrats (but I repeat myself), all declared Reagan as unelectable, until he won with the largest margin in history!

It's official, Obama loves illegal immigrants! His administration has created an official "public advocate" for "undocumented workers" (isn't that the Newspeak term these days?) being charged with immigration violations! I guess it's not enough that those people already get a lawyer to represent them, at the tax payer's expense, no doubt, but Obama has seen fit to actually create a new "advocate" for them, within ICE itself, no less!

Rick has never been one to let conservative principles get in his way of pragmatism.

But I am the only "true conservative" in this field of conservatives, except for "Doctor No" over there who "votes No on every spending bill."

Yea, in Rick's world ya' gotta vote liberal half the time or that reaching across the isle is meaningless.

Sacrifice the principles and save them for the ignorant and easily fooled voters during election time. Tell them you hate abortion and love family values but when caught voting against your "rock solid" principles make up any excuse and the boobs will eat up your crap like "the other white meat."

The Voting Record:

The Record is to bogus conservative politicians what the wooden stake is to Dracula.

1) Rick said he made a mistake voting NCLB, but only after doctor Paul forced Santorum to admit he made a mistake.

A "mistake!" Santorum, It was a sanatariun doozy! A real whopper that only can only be explained that he enjoys these forays into the "Land of Liberaldom" when he thinks no one is watching?

Rick the "only true conservative" cast his vote for the No Child left Behind legislation that added a huge increase to Jimmy Carter's Department of Education.

That department of perversity indoctrinates your child in public school! it's the very same department that pushes the perverse "life style" of HOh-MO-SEXUALITY on impressionable school children.

That perverse "federal" department that Ronald Reagan wanted his fellow Republicans to help him abolish in the 80's got a big boost from senator Santorum two decades later to help it grow into an even bigger bully to punish young kids in every public school in the land! Had the DOE repented from their multiply sins of indoctrinating kids into socialism and perversity when Santorum's sanity left him to vote Yes for this pro-abortion; pro-marxist, pro-homosexual cabinet agency?

All right that is not "nit picking," unless you believe that Reagan was wrong about the Department of Education?

All right he says" I made a mistake." Rick you are a poster boy for "mistakes." Your sins have piled up with every trip you've crossed over to the wrong side of the tracks - Liberal town.

Rick Santorum claims to be "right to life" and has conned some "pro-life " organizations despite having voted for this pro-abortion bill: http://www.votesmart.org/bill/5480/21800/27054/abortion-clinic-access-bill

Who's desperate? All of them it seems. Newt and Santorum aren't even eligible to pick up delegates in every state, Ron Paul will never have the support from the party and Romney can't get over 50% of the vote in the primaries. They keep attacking each other, spending money and further tarnish the brand. Their desperation only helps Obama, unfortunately. Oh well, at least the Senate should change hands this go around.

It's luck for Newt and Santorum that they really don't actually NEED the delegates from every state. So, those "lost" sates are irrelevant.

That's what happens in the Primary process, you know. But "tarnishing the brand?" I just don't see it.

I mentioned a week or so ago that Obama and Co. want Romney to win the nomination so they can use RomneyCare as an albatross to hang around his neck. Yesterday afternoon in the car, I heard about this on the news...

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House is taking on GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney over his criticism of President Barack Obama's birth control coverage mandate. Press secretary Jay Carney says Romney is an "odd messenger" to be attacking Obama over the issue.

The mandate requires that church-affiliated employers such as hospitals or charities provide birth control coverage even if it runs counter to their religious beliefs. Romney has accused Obama of an "assault on religion" over the issue. But Carney says a virtually identical policy is in place in Massachusetts, where Romney served as governor, and that it's ironic for Romney to criticize Obama over it.

Going way back to 1994, when he backed abortion rights as a Senate candidate, Romney’s wife, Anne, made a $150 gift to Planned Parenthood on their joint checking account. The Boston Globe published this photo, which shows Romney at the fundraising event for Planned Parenthood in Cohasset, Mass. By 2002 he was back on the campaign trail again, this time as a gubernatorial candidate promising to maintain the family-planning status quo in Massachusetts. -
