Open Thread: Iowa Caucuses Tomorrow

By NB Staff | January 02, 2012 | 13:42

A  A

Today's starter topic: The Iowa caucuses are tomorrow and the final poll of the state, released by the liberal Des Moines Register newspaper, indicates Mitt Romney in the lead, just barely ahead of Ron Paul and Rick Santorum in third place.

Do the Iowa caucuses matter anymore? Will you be keeping an eye on the events of tomorrow or are you going to check in once they're all over?

Submitted by ricklail on Mon, 01/02/2012 - 2:18pm.

The repeat button on the remote only switches back and forth between 2 channels. Don't know what I am going to do. Right now it is the Dawgs and the Gators. Was watching Houston- State Penn errrr Penn State and the Rose Parade between the advertisements. They advertise more than NASCAR or the NFL. And then there is the advertising of their crummy prime time shows. I don't watch NBC or ABC prime time and very little CBS.

Running behind. Haven't got the dip and chips ready yet. See y'all after the games. Really don't care about the Rose Bowl.

The bar that appears across the top of your screen has a tab labeled "last 4." Clicking on it will show a drop-down menu listing the last 4 stations you visited [the 5th, of course, is the one you're already viewing]. I suggest you first visit each of the stations you want to switch between, then start using the "last 4."

Didn't I warn you about the ACC refs?

Charlie Weis has been the Gators problem all season. He left and look at how the offense has played. Better that most of the season. Then too he was beating the big uglies, the D & O line, to the training table. By the time they got to eat there was nothing but scraps. Since he left they have been eating better and putting on some weight.

Again we have to get our news from the UK. The laugher is that the Brady Campaign just will not admit they have been defeated. They are saying that it was just collectors and gun owners buying more. They never admit there were many first time gun owners. Cam Edwards proved this last week with calls from first time guns owners. They will not admit that women are buying more guns than ever.

What makes Matthews vulnerable to criticism . . .

Submitted by Galvanic on Tue, 01/03/2012 - 10:56am.

. . . of his metaphors is the fact that he regularly attacks others who use metaphors. He even attacks conservatives for using terms that he himself uses.

Remember his hissy fit over someone's description of the Obama Administration as a "regime?" (It may have been Limbaugh). Matthews went on and on about how the word regime is used to describe Third World dictatorships, and not freely-elected democracies.  He accused Obama's critics of wielding the R-word to imply that  Obama's Presidency was somehow illegimate.

Days later, he sheepishly apologized when video evidence emerged of Matthews using that very R-word to describe the Bush-43 White House not once, but several times.

Matthews loves to throw metaphors around, but when conservatives do the same, he finds some dark, subliminal message (often racist) in them.

the term. On the other hand, Limbaugh and other conservative talkers have used it repeatedly to describe this administration. It's become an habitual reference similar to the "liberalism is a mental disease/disorder" mantra.

That said, both of those terms/phrases rank relatively low on the scale of offensive speech, at least imo. I'm not particularly bothered by it.

strategy

Submitted by Agnostic on Mon, 01/02/2012 - 3:59pm.

The following states have at least a reasonable possibiltiy to go Democrat (not saying it will happen but within reason):

State / Electoral Votes / Running Total

Wa – 12 - 12
Or - 7 - 19
Ca - 55 - 74
Nv - 6 -80
Hi – 4 - 84
Il – 20 - 104
Mi – 16 - 120
NY – 29 - 149
Vt - 3 - 152
Ma - 11 - 163
Ct - 7 - 170
RI - 4 - 174
NH – 4 - 178
Md – 10 - 188
DC - 3 - 191
Mn – 10 - 201
NJ – 14 - 215
De – 3 - 218
Wi – 10 - 228
Pa – 20 - 248
Co – 9 - 257
Va – 13 - 270
NC – 15 - 285
Oh – 18 - 303

With 270 electoral votes needed for victory - notice how many of the states are controlled by one or two large cities/state capital (usually large public union). So the strategy isn't all that bad - except for the country.

NC going

Submitted by Agnostic on Tue, 01/03/2012 - 12:39pm.

NC is probably the first state that I could take off the list and some of that is because they are not reliant on a couple of large cities or the capital as their voting base.  However, it doesn't change the conclusion that states like Illinois (Chicago) and Pennsylvania (Pitt/Phila) have very strong conservative voters but are overshadowed by a couple of areas of population concentration. For this reason the strategy above has merits for party victory - it is just very bad for the nation as a whole.

NFL firings

Submitted by ricklail on Mon, 01/02/2012 - 6:56pm.

The Bucs have fired coach Raheem Morris and his entire staff.

The Colts fired Bill Polian who was VP and son Chris Polian GM. Irsay can't fire Jim Caldwell without Jesse Jacskon, the "Reverend" Al and the NAALCP coming down hard on him. That would be two black coaches in one day. There is a possibilty tha Romeo Cronell of the Chiefs gets the axe. Then it will be on for sure.

Rams fired their coach and GM

Jaugars told their entire coaching staff to clean out their offices and turn in their keys before the end of the day.

Still waitng for the Chargers to anounce that Norv Turner is history and Jason Garrett of the Cowboys getting the heave ho. Really surprised that Shanahan hasn't been shown the door. Then again the day is not over

Irsay says he fired the Polians because of bad draft choices. IMO Bill Polian was one of the great GM. He was not quite on the level with Gil Brandt, formerly of the Cowboys, but he did draft Payton Manning.

Once again, terrible coaching decisions cost Dawgs. Running up the middle against Spartans: sheer idiocy. FG try on 3d down in first OT: monumentally stupid.

I'm swearing off FB. Ready for baseball.

Making no attempt to get the first down with ~3 min left in regulation? They act like their afraid to pass it, then suddenly all they do is throw 20yrd passes.

Absolutely right, Boudin...

One more 1st down would have iced the game. Ordinarily, keeping it on the ground would have made sense, but MSU was stopping the run cold [what was it...sixteen times for losses?] Most likely, one pass completion--and GA's passing game was clicking--would have clinched it. Way too much time was left on clock.

Ron Paul has enough baggage to retire every New York bell-hop a millionaire on just the tips! On Domestic issues Ron Paul serves-up the political equivalent of a succulent Kobe Beef--His Foreign Policy however is a plate of stenched maggot infested beef. Sorry Paulistinians because it's a "package meal" I can't stomach his candidacy...

Do the Iowa caucuses matter anymore?!?

Submitted by ombdz on Mon, 01/02/2012 - 8:10pm.

Not sure how you can even pose that question. Even a glance at the past few competitive races on the Dem and GOP side shows that they do. But as always seems to be the case in Iowa, there are other storylines besides who finishes on top that may ultimately prove to be more important for the GOP ... http://bit.ly/qVdDUt

Now,if only my second favorite team can win.  That would be any team that's playing the U of Michigan.

To re-elect Obama would be like the Titanic backing up and hitting the iceberg again.

Obama to hold teleconference with Iowa voters

What the heck for, since it's a Republican-only caucus?

His motto is "Wherever two or more are gathered, for any reason, I will be there also, to get some publicity."

And get this from The Hill article:

The president and his family arrive back in Washington Tuesday morning after spending the past week on vacation in Hawaii.

Is nobody going to post Alan Colmes' despicable attack on Rick Santorum yesterday in which he said Santorum took his 2-hour old dead son home to play with it?

Now there's a big chunk of Liberal bias!

With 99+% of precincts reporting, Santorum leads Romney by 4--FOUR!!!--votes. Paul relatively close third. Gingrich fourth. Perry disappointing fifth...reassessing campaign. Bachmann last.

Karl "the brain" Rove says final tally will have Romney winning by around 20 votes.
