Open Thread: Democrats Losing Voters in 2012 Battleground States
It seems President Obama's speeches on class warfare, big government, and comments on American laziness haven't worked in his favor. According to ABC News, the number of registered Democrats in battleground states for next year's election has dropped by nearly one million. Some of his supporters contend that Obama will still win the independent vote, where many of those Democrats have gone.
Do you think Obama can win the independent vote in 2012? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
The analysis from ABC on the drop in registered Democrats suggests Obama is losing huge numbers of voters in key battleground states:
A report released today by the centrist think-tank Third Way showed that more than 825,000 voters in eight key battleground states have fled the Democratic Party since Obama won election in 2008.
“The numbers show that Democrats’ path to victory just got harder,” said Lanae Erickson, the report’s co-author. “We are seeing both an increase in independents and a decrease in Democrats and that means the coalition they have to assemble is going to rely even more on independents in 2012 than it did in 2008.” [...]
In eight states that will be must-wins in 2012 – Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina and Pennsylvania – Democrats lost 5.4 percent of their registered voters while Republicans lost 3.1 percent. The number of independent voters in those states jumped 3.4 percent.
While the independent vote could possibly still sway to Obama, the election results of 2010 would suggest otherwise.
Obama snagged 52 percent of unaffiliated voters in 2008, but those independents flocked to Republicans in the 2010 midterms with 56 percent opting for a GOP candidate. Between 2008 and 2010, there was a 27-point shift in which party independents chose.
Could this all be a result of Obama's insistance that we need more government? After all, in his Tuesday speech, he said "...they argue, even if prosperity doesn’t trickle down, well, that’s the price of liberty. Now, it’s a simple theory. And we have to admit, it’s one that speaks to our rugged individualism and our healthy skepticism of too much government. That’s in America’s DNA. And that theory fits well on a bumper sticker. But here’s the problem: It doesn’t work. It has never worked."

"Independent" voters are getting a little respect.
Both parties have taken these voters for granted for way too long.

The Republicans have been bending over backwards so far to cater to the Independents, we've ended up with McRino and, for instance, Charlie Crist in Florida.
I think that is because the Establishment Republicans mistakenly believe that Independents are the "squishy middle" spectrum in their views. This, IMO, is mistaken. I believe Independents are fed up with the party ideology of both sides, and while basically voting pretty much straight party one way or the other, choose not to identify with either party.
I, myself, would register as an Independent, except here in Florida, I would lose my privilege of voting in the primaries. Which is as it should be. Unless one chooses to self-identify with a party, one shouldn't have the ability to determine that party's candidates in the general elections.
As for the Democrats, other than Obama, who stubbornly refuses to do so, I think many Democrats are running to the right (particularly on the fiscal front) after the Tea Party drubbing of 2010. See Claire McGaskill as an example.

and I admit to being biased, but I sincerely hope he's out. I do base my "hope of change" on the fact that many who voted to put him in office had left his camp. He's lost independents, he's lost apologist moderates, he's lost a lot of middle-America, he's lost some of his own party, and he's even lost some of the black vote. How democrat math comes up with a win using these numbers is beyond me (as is most of their philosophy). Based on this and my personal desire, he won't win reelection.

But while this is an effective campaign tactic in Chicago, I don't think Bambi or his (mis)advisors have the skills to carry it off on a national level. And after all he and his cronies have gotten caught at over the last several years, as well as the CONSTANT election rigging by democrats as a whole, this aspect will be closely monotired. Great point nonetheless!

And isn't that the real reason the NAACP is running to the U.N. to complain that states have finally awakened and are requiring proof of a voter's legal status? The “most vicious, co-ordinated and sinister attack to narrow participation in our democracy since the early 20th century” they say. I guess Eric Holder simply isn't doin his job, right?

I read that this morning and immediately thought, "Since when does the U.N. have the right to govern our elections?" As far as I am concerned we should have kicked the UN out of the US YEARS ago. Let them fend for themselves.
As far as the Dems fighting voter ID requirements on the basis of freaking human rights, or racism, or any other "unfairness" I think we need to laugh in their faces and go ahead and do it. I know in Georgia we have to show an ID to vote and I haven't noticed it cutting down on voter turnout. ..."independents" are considered to be much too important in the grand scheme of things and are nothing more than fence sitting, squishy, which way is the wind blowing followers.
Leaders, who declare themselves Rep or Dems without hessitation, don't sit around waiting for opportunity to land in their laps; they take the bull by the horns and lead. This is why "independents" are so easily swayed and therefore are becoming less and less relevent.

There are three types of independents:
One is the person that is independent because they have no strong opinions, don't know enough to make a decision or think that declaring a party makes one too controversial ('squishy voters').
The second is the person who thinks of them self as too free thinking to be defined by a party (nearly all of these are Democrat voters).
And third is the person who is basically a conservative, at least fiscally so, who has seen the GOP go down the big government path every time they have been given the room to operate and they are tired of even giving titular support to the party (nearly all still vote Republican but will often sit out on votes).
Thanks, Agnostic

I replied pretty much the same thing, above (before reading your post)....except I didn't really detail the types of indies.
I truly believe the "squishy middle" (funny, I think I used the same term) is getting smaller all the time, while the people with a political ideology who disdain the label group is getting larger.
Which is why I think Republicans need to abandon the centrist approach to appeal to the squish people, and get back to true conservatism, where our candidates run on ideas of how to get back to our founding Constitutional principles.
While I think Newt's past has shown a propensity to squish, I think he's seen the light, so to speak.

the squishy middle is getting smaller but President Obama is not worried about the independent voters. He is focused on the uninformed or single subject voters. These people will not be showing up in polls for several months and a certain class of these people will not even be registered until the several months from now.
This is why it is useless to look at these polls now. Sure, Obama supporters are no longer showing up on the registers - they were only put there, by ACORN or some other activist groups help, for the 2008 vote. They are gone now but as time draws near they will be brought back with the same empty promises and bribes. The good news for the Republicans is that I don't think Obama will win any more states than he did in 2008 so it will only be a matter of how many electoral votes he will lose.
IMO, he's going to have to fool a whole bunch of noobs

...to the political process.
Because his promises to the dumb masses, and those easily led down the primrose path, haven't been kept. Obama hasn't paid the mortgage out of his stash for the galactically stupid, nor has he fixed it so that illegals get amnesty, nor provided free education for the OWies.
Unless the economy drastically turns around (and I don't believe these unemployment numbers for a second, and I'm sure after the holidays all of the temporary workers will fall off and drive the numbers, even jury rigged as they are, back up), I expect to see Obama's numbers crater further. In his desperation, I can only imagine what kinds of idiot moves this bunch will make.

and you'll notice that the maimstream media never seem to cajole Democrats to "move to the center" to appeal to "independents." Probably because they know most "independents" are Democrats who just want to feel like they're not "beholden" to a party.

Mr. Obama is recognized for his lazy do nothing ethics and continuous whine about it always being someone else’s fault.
He has supported too many scandals and corruption officials, has shown very poor judgment on many of the important issues to Americans. His sole purpose has been to cater to the special interest groups that buy his opinion.
He has been responsible for way to many errors in judgment and corruption to gain the majority of the independent vote.

A great read about how the 'won' spoke more platform(running for 2012) than policy(doing his job).
Basically a rant about the wealthy robbing the rest.
Get a clue voters, the 'king' has no clothes... time to 'hope' for a real 'change'.
That once it's understood the Kansas speech was the work of the party leader, not the president of the United States, it becomes easier to think about it without overreacting to its intense and vivid rhetoric... Mr. Obama, the bloodless political analysis of the speech runs, was just rallying his base. He needs to.

Fortunatly, I'm going over this weekend to be with both of my sons and my grandson, so I'll miss the Royal Leeches...........but my son who lives there isn't looking forward to the inconveniences that will be caused starting next weekend.

Question. Yesterday here I was behind a car with " Defend Hawaii" decal and a "scary" looking assault rifle silhouette (made me nervous).
Now that I've calmed down from that "threatening image", can you tell me what this is about?

Place all the Family that needs Coverage in one spot. Never occurred to me that is was a personal reduction program. At least 500 to 1,000 people that can spend time with family.
Obama... how much additional personal will be needed....Nope to bring your family that will be extra, or some other caveat .

My respect for Bush(both of them) got a little higher, I had suspected it was something like this.
On the other hand, my disrespect, my scale of dispicable for Soetoro has gone down to a new low because I didn't know that was going on. How cruel they can be. That wasn't a question of how cruel can they be, it's that they ARE cruel. I hope they get bad weather down there the whole time. (Sorry, killa! I don't want them having a good time!)

Rain gear around here is a swimsuit.
Wind will drive one crazy, not to mention ankles getting sand blasted and the trades have been blowing around here big time. Wind whipping up some whitecaps right now, heh.

Clinton, instead of going to Camp David, decided to go to the Kennedy Center on Christmas night to see "The Will Rogers Follies" starring Mac Davis. 50 police officers were held over their normal shift, not to mention the retinue of Secret Service Agents etc, who had to forego Christmas with their families to service the Great Ego. Who probably couldn't stomach staying somewhere cooped up with Hillary. The epitome of crass selfishness.

Romney, Newt and all the other GOP candidates need to hammer Obama unmercilessly. He's got sooo many lies and anti-USA statements on record that even I could put together countless ads. This is what voters want and I can't for the life of me figure out why they aren't all doing it. The winner will be the one who attacks Obama the best and the most. What are they afraid of? Let's also support Rocky Anderson, a lefty who's going to run on a new party ticket. He can surely siphon off some votes from Obama. I don't care what Newt or Romney did 10/15/20 years ago, I care about what Obama has done for the last 3. We all know Obama will be extremely negative so why pretend?
