Open Thread: Does Obama Know the Difference Between England and Great Britain?
Following the contemptible storming of the British Embassy in Iran by violent protestors, President Obama rightly condemned the Iranian government for not controlling the protestors and protecting a diplomatic outpost. In doing so, however, he made yet another embarrassing foreign policy gaffe: referring to the embassy as "English" instead of "British."
How do you think the media would have treated a Republican presidential candidate if he or she made the same mistake? Check out a video of the press conference after the break, and let us know your thoughts in the comments.
According to the Heritage Foundation:
In case the president is unaware, England forms part of Great Britain, which also includes Scotland and Wales, though not Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom. There is no such thing as an “English” embassy anywhere in the world, and there hasn’t been one for several centuries.
Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised by this latest slip-up by President Obama. After all he recently described France as America’s closest ally, and famously declared that he has traveled to no less than 57 states. But it would be nice if the leader of the free world bothered to look at a map once in a while, or even paid a visit to the British Embassy in Washington, currently housing the Churchill bust that Mr. Obama unceremoniously threw out of the Oval Office soon after his inauguration.
The "English" gaffe not only calls into question Obama's foreign policy expertise, but also his opinions on the relationship between the US and Britain. Rather than fostering continued relationships with countries throughout Europe and strongly supporting Israel, many of Obama's policies have denigrated those relationships while appeasing enemies and adversaries. Calling France America's closest ally was a blow to the "special relationship" shared by the US and Britain since the Great Rapprochement in the two decades leading up to World War I.
Of course, the White House and the media will inevitably dismiss the remark as a minor blunder, but it will not be the first time Obama has treated the key ally of Britain without the respect it deserves. What are your thoughts on the matter?

That was my whole take on it too, MB................he looked like Alfred E. Obama sitting there - wide-eyed and detached from reality - and stammering and stumbling his way through another tedious and boring statement that held about as much weight and 'gravitas' (a favorite lib word) as your little Yorkie growling at my ankles while I'm wearing some steel-toed construction boots!!! Only difference is - your Yorkie is a lot cuter!!! I'm sure that the Iranians (I'm surprised he didn't call them the Persians) are just quaking in their boots after this aggresive and tough threat from Boy BlahBlah.
Maybe he'll send in a couple of drones and blow up some goats or sheep................and he'll call the Persian Embassy in D.C. and invite them to a 'beer summit'. Oh, I forgot - they don't drink OR have homosexuals in Iran.............so I guess Boy Barry strikes out on both accounts!!

I'm not sure this is a gaffe so much as a diss against our British allies like he's been doing so many times before. It seems Alaska and Hawaii are one State, or are 2 left to go? That would really make 59 States! Not just a mere 57! LOL.

Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit, but my staff would not justify it."

Submitted by stratman on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 5:06pm.
England is one country of Great Britain, AKA United Kingdom. The other countries are Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland (though sometimes Northern Ireland is referred to separately). The word British may describe a citizen from anyone of these countries (or just those from England).
Therefore, diplomatically speaking, to call the UK's embassy in Iran as "English" instead of "British" is a gaffe since it ignores Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

I wouldn't be surprised if Obama doesn't know the distinction, as he didn't know that the spoken language of Austria is not "Austrian."
Remember that Obama's alleged 'worldliness' was mostly based on his brief residence in Indonesia as a boy and a presumption of intellectual prowess. Just as his lofty image as a leader has vaporized, so has the assumption that he is as intelligent as they made him out to be.

Seems like a pretty trivial criticisim to me. I'm sure the President understands the difference between England and the United Kingdom. So he misspoke -- who cares? It happens. Like the 57 state thing -- does anyone here really believe that Obama thought the U.S. was comprised of 57 states? There are a lot of reasons to be critical of Obama -- but this English versus Britain gaffe doesn't seem like a very strong one.
Well, it might not seem like
Submitted by killa37 on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 12:05pm.
Well, it might not seem like that big of a deal - until you start adding up the never-ending string of 'trivial mistakes' that this psuedo-intellectual has made, and will continue to make. And the 57 state thing - I, for one, know for a fact that there are 57 moooooooooooooooooooslem countries in the world - and apparantly that was more central in Boy Barry's mediocre-IQ brain than the number of states in the USA - a country that he disdains, disrespects, and dispises (aside from what he can get out of it for himself). And remember, he STILL hadn't visited one or two more AFTER the 57.
I think the crux of the whole subject is that Boy Barry is NOT an intellectual heavyweight by ANY stretch of the imagination, and it's pretty obvious if one chooses to pay attention - which is something that the MSM declines.
Not to mention the fact...

he may be an idiot, but not that dumb. The point is, we ALL make mistakes, gaffes, whatever you wish to call them, but when one is uttered by Obama (which happens far too frequently to be coincidence, IMO) is it either ignored by the medi or passed off as a simple misstep. Republicans on the other hand are savaged as morons, idiots, incapable imbeciles, the list goes on. We are being just as critical of the media treatment of Obama as we are of the man himself....the point of this website, in case you missed the tagline.

How can you use "trivial" and POTUS in the same sentence?
You may not agree that all 103 gaffes are really gaffes. Some of us believe they are clues to this man's real views about the US. Read each of them carefully, then step back and look at the big picture.
His view of American and World History is based on revisionist history. He is a socialist/communist who does not believe in the Constitution, his agenda is so important that he circumvents a 235 year old legislative process; he incites class warfare, he has caused divisiveness not known to us in over 50 years. He has abandoned all of our allies. Those are not gaffes or mis-spoken words. They are clues to who this man really is and how the media have hidden who is the real Barack Obama.
Far52, I would agree with
Submitted by Liberallies on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 12:26pm.
Far52,
I would agree with you if it wasn't for the fact that the Democratic party and Left wingers LOVE to pounce on real and made up gaffes, big and small, when they believe Conservatives and Republicans do it. Thus, nothing wrong in using the Left weapon against them.
Now do you believe the media and the Left would not have made a big deal if Bush claimed there were 57 States? If he mispronounced the word corpse? (The Left went crazy because Bush pronounced nuclear with a Texan accent!) If Bush had claimed that Austrians speak Austrian?
The Left, the Democratic Party AND the media went crazy, attacked Bush and attack any Conservative and Republican whom they believe committed a gaffe. Why not do the same to the Left and Democrats?
Additionally, we were told that Obama was the smartest, most intelligent President to have EVER been elected. His gaffes and inability to give a speech without his handy teleprompter prove otherwise.

Target would only have 1% of their normal shoppers, so the idea is clearly false (that they are the 99%). More like the STOOOPID 1% vs. the successful 1%. Opposite ends of different worlds.
Also ironic because I think, not sure, that Target gives 10% of profits to charity. I don't think many companies do that.

Still awaiting his transcripts albeit with grade inflation and minority status, probably fairly good. Really would like to see how/why he got into Columbia with his admitted disaster at Occidental...and who paid for Columbia/Yale ??
However, it is clear that his Obamaness does not know the difference, to use old phrase, between his alimentary canal ending and a hole in the wall...
I well remember the media touting Gore and Kerry's brain power till reality showed them to be in the gentleman's C category as to College GPA.
As the media tightens and enhances its iron curtain over America as to what they tell us/do not tell us/spin and cheerlead for Obama: seems a lock for a second term for this arrogant fool. Think Australia as a place to live; I am.

To be honest, I don't think
Submitted by lotr on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 1:49pm.
To be honest, I don't think it's that big a deal -- I think most people equate English with British, and "Great Britain" itself is no longer a country. It might have been akin to saying "the Russians" instead of "the Soviets" back when it was the USSR.
That said, however, it is a perfectly legitimate observation that if W had said it, Andy Rooney would've been on the next 60 Minutes with snide comments about how stupid he is. It's the unfair media treatment of conservatives that I find highly problematic.

Time to self-denounce

Later. I have more important things to do, like attend a mandatory neighborhood meeting where I will self-denounce myself for not loving His Majesty The Shahinshah enough. Also, I need to make sure I even have portraits of Him in my closets so there is no escape.

FALSE STATEMENT on Palin
Submitted by MaximusBraveheart on Thu, 12/01/2011 - 3:57pm.
"Rick Perry is stupid." ---------FALSE-------- That is in your opinion. He is Governor... not too shabby in my book.
"Herman Cain doesn't know foreign policy" ---- FALSE as a whole --- One could add "as well as the other candidates," and thus may be more accurate.
"Sarah Palin can see Russia from her house."
----------------- FALSE slander !!! --------------
From Governor Palin's September 11, 2008 appearance on ABC News, during an interviewer Charles Gibson asked her what insight she had gained from living so close to Russia: She said: "They're our next-door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska":
Two days later on Saturday Night Live, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler appeared in the now famous sketch portraying Sarah Palin and Hillary Clinton, during which Fey warped Governor Palin's remark into this: FEY AS PALIN: "And I can see Russia from my house."
NOW just imagine what we could do with Obama's words given that level of editorial freedom.

It IS a fairly trivial
Submitted by trak65 on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 2:38pm.
It IS a fairly trivial mistake in isolation. You can also say on the 57 states that, okay, he probably meant 47 of the continental 48. The real story, and the raison d'etre of NB, is the absence of any coverage or discussion in the MSM news, talk shows, opinion pieces, etc. If W or Palin had said one of these things we would hear a LOT more about it and the intent would be to diminish them in the eyes of the public. That doesn't happen with dems -- especially Obama. And don't even get me started on Biden!
The Treaty and Act of Union classes were skipped
Submitted by gopcongress on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 2:42pm.
Apparently, Barack Obama, international genius of Harvard U, skipped how the UK was formed with the Treaty of Union in 1706, followed by the Act of Union in 1707, formed what is known as the UK.
To be fair, international sports ("sport") teams in the UK conform to their own regions, such as Scotland and England, in events like the World Cup and the Olympics. It would be comparable to California competing against, say, Texas in the Olympics or World Cup. And during the Cold War, we interchangeably switched Russians with Soviets with no need of worrying if we were technically "correct," no doubt pissing off the Georgians, Ukrainians, Lithuanians, Latvians, Belarussians, etc. This included presidents including Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Nixon.
But you are right. Had President Cain or President Gingrich said "English Embassy", forget about it. The press would have a field day. Instead, maybe we can make a DVD of the gaffe and send it to the Queen.

He believes that Washington DC is the United States of America. Why shouldn't he believe that England is Great Britain? There's only one of them and and 57 states. Why shouldn't he be confused? When he's through with us we will be the USSA.

This can't be coming from the brilliant, the amazing, the sheer genius that is Obama, can it? Heaven knows we're told how smart he is ad nauseum, all evidence to the contrary. Personally, I'm still waiting to see some evidence of this vaunted brilliance.

Anyone catch what Bret Baier said about his Romney interview?
Submitted by PrairieSky on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 10:10pm.
Bret Baier was on O'Reilly tonight talking about his interview yesterday with Romney...Apparently Romney actually told Baier after the interview that he didn't like the interview, and didn't like the way that he was treated...The interview was not a high point for Romney, but that was entirely his own doing. Assuming that Romney gets the nomination, if the irritable and petulant attitude that we saw in the interview is what we can expect from him during the general election campaign, the Republicans have a real problem.
I am still on the fence as to who I will be voting for in the primaries, but Romney did himself no favors with me.

I missed that interview

but what you said doesn't bode well for Romney. If he can't take it now...That's why I like Cain, he can take it and turn it around on fools like Lawrence O'Donnell.
Rad...No, it sure doesn't...It actually really surprised me...
Submitted by PrairieSky on Wed, 11/30/2011 - 11:19pm.
that Romney reacted the way he did...He reminded me of Obama...Thin-skinned, a bit arrogant, and petulant...Lord knows we have enough of that in the WH now...We don't want to elect another president who gets really, pardon the expression, pissy, when he's asked a question he doesn't like or doesn't have an answer for.
That interview really left me very unhappy and frankly quite disturbed about the prospect of Romney as the nominee. If an interview with Bret Baier throws him into a fit of pique like this, can you imagine what going head to head with Obama, the Dems and the entire MSM will do?
Not good...not good at all.

New Lefty Party

I don't normally watch Bull-Dyke Maddow but I glanced at it last night and saw Rocky Anderson. He's forming a new "Justice Party" to run for president. It's the usual things lefties like: Bush and Cheney on war crimes, Corporate greed, the Patriot Act is illegal, the Govt needs to spend more money, etc etc, then he says Obama sold out. Hopefully this guy gets enough traction to siphon some votes from Obama.
