Open Thread: Will Tea Parties Be Reimbursed?

By NB Staff | October 28, 2011 | 12:08

A  A

Nationwide, Tea Party groups are upset by the double standard applied to their rallies and Occupy Wall Street protests. While Tea Party groups typically are required to pay a fee to use a park for a one-day rally, OWS protestors have set up camp in the same parks for days at no cost.

One Tea Partier, Colleen Owens of Richmond, VA, is taking action, demanding that the Richmond City Council refund the $10,000 that the Richmond Tea Party was charged for their Kanawha Plaza rallies, the same venue Occupy Richmond protestors have been using at no charge.

Owens is not the only Tea Partier demanding fairer treatment. Do you think any of the Tea Parties will be successful in having their money reimbursed? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Owens, along with others, believe that the OWS protestors are getting a free pass to break the law and not pay permit fees. According to FOX News Radio's Todd Starnes, Tea Party activists are growing increasingly frustrated with the situation:

“We’ve had to pay for the police, the sanitation, we had to pay for emergency personnel, and we event had to buy a $1 million liability policy,” Owens told Fox News. [...]

“We’re trying to show this is unfair and biased treatment by the mayor and the city council,” she said. “Either force the occupiers to follow the law that’s on the books or evict them.” [...]

“If they are not going to apply the law equally, then they should refund our money,” she said. “They’ve been camped out there for almost two weeks and they have not paid one dime. They are not being held accountable to follow the law, yet we were expected to follow the law.”

Owens is joined by Tea Party leaders across the country who have experienced similar frustrations. In Nashville, the Tea Party was refused access to hold a rally at Legislative Plaza, the same place where Occupy Nashville has been camping for three weeks, apparently without securing a permit. In Louisville, Tea Party organizer Wendy Caswell explained that Occupy Louisville protestors could camp in Jefferson Park until the end of the year for a $25 fee, while a permit for a one-day Tea Party rally at the same park cost $75, on top of insurance, security, and medical personnel.

Do you think Tea Party organizers will have any success in securing reimbursements? Will cities begin cracking down on OWS protests without proper permits? Or do you think OWS protests will continue getting a free pass?

OWS is about 'fairness'?

Submitted by MidAmerica on Fri, 10/28/2011 - 12:16pm.

Cities are cash strapped.  The OWS are a drain and a distraction to them but because they have the blessings of the media and the Whitehouse taking action to remove them is held back.  However the threat of legal costs incurred from Tea Partiers lawsuits may prompt the cities to close out the squatter camps.

Pop this link &  search on anything in the following string to go straight to the pic I'm talking about: In a hilarious vignette that illustrates in miniature the absurd unfeasibility of the whole "green energy" scam, the Occupiers had set up a bicycle connected to a dynamo so that the computer in the media center would be powered by renewable and sustainable energy! Yeah!

That pic, and the one below it, are just bloody perfect for this bunch of nitwits.

Things I have learned by listening to NBC, CBS, etc

Submitted by ThisnThat on Fri, 10/28/2011 - 12:41pm.

  1. Tea Party people are sick, depraved, mean and nasty little racists. They are also an extreme minority whose views are rejected by at least 600 million Americans. These people are just puppets of Big Oil, Big Banks, and other selfish people who are ruining our country. The reason they didn't get arrested, and why the parks were so clean after their "protests" is because there were so few of them at their rallies. And besides, the police are under orders to protect them -- even those that spit on our beloved Congressmen.
  2. OWS protesters are All-American patriots who reflect the majority opinion of all peace-loving Americans. They reflect -- by their diverstty, intellect, and good-will -- true American values. Yes, there are a few disruptions at the protest sites -- but it's because they are so young and energetic. Besides, there are so many of them at so many sites worldwide, that any reasonable person could expect a few youthful sidetracks. The real reason many have been arrested, however, is due directly to police brutality, and the infiltration of extreme right-wing elements devoted to causing trouble.

Have I got it about right?

Great news

Submitted by ricklail on Fri, 10/28/2011 - 1:00pm.

Most of you know that I am no fan of DOOK. Wednesday my 3 year old grandson under went 10 hours of surgery to remove a kidney and repair his bladder at DOOK's Childrens Hospital He got to leave the hospital today. They have to spend the night in Durham in case any thing goes wrong. If all is well he can go home tomorrow. I still don't like DOOK but I think his surgeon was great. By the way his surgeon was a grad of Tulane. DOOK Hospital is OK in my book. And the best thing about the whole experience; I didn't get into any fights with any DOOK fans. And one of his nurses was grad of UNC School of Nursing

This doesn't come from me. Instead, this was said at the top of the news hour by Andrea Mitchell's (MSNBC) first guest today.

I guess MSNBC is finally realizing that o'bama has nothing -- absolutely nothing -- positive to sell to America, does he? The only thing left is negative campaigning. And to do that effectively -- he needs money, which explains his constant campaign mode. Again -- explained by MSNBC today.

In my opinion, the inequality

Submitted by Minarchian on Fri, 10/28/2011 - 2:07pm.

In my opinion, the inequality in treatment between the Fleabaggers and the TEA Party by these cities are a form of content discrimination and against the 1st Amendment, and equal protection.

The TP should find a good lawyer and collect their money back, and then some. Either that or force these cities to enforce the laws equally by demanding these Fleabaggers pay up for the time they've been there and from this time forward.

But, then again, it all depends on finding a judge who actually believes in equal protection and the 1st Amendment.

States need to look at

Submitted by forest on Fri, 10/28/2011 - 2:58pm.

States need to look at stripping municipalities of the privilege of requiring permits if they are unwilling or unable to enforce their regulations without discriminating. I've read about a number of mayors "waiving" permit requirements for their Jacobin friends. They can't do that.

And going forward I don't see why anyone would submit to permit requirements in municipalities that have abused their authority in this manner. Just ignore them. I hope they enjoy the breakdown of law and order that they have invited.

Submitted by killa37 on Fri, 10/28/2011 - 3:12pm.

I take the side of the TEA Party here, of course ...........but I'm not going to call it the TP, because that seems to be a little too close to something that is NOT being used at the OWS bowel movements. But I do think that if the TEA Party does manage to successfully sue, or otherwise make their case legitimate with regards to the money that they had to pony up for their own rallies, the MSM will somehow, and predictably, paint them as some kind of whiners, or crybabies, or complainers for having to pay to use the public services. After all, we all know that the TEA party is comprised of a bunch of rich white conservatives who can afford it................and the OWS bowel movement is just a bunch of poor, jobless, homeless, disenfranchised common folk who all have the same goal - weath redistribution and social/financial justice.

Are we surprised by this, really???

Arab Spring Optimism gives way to fear of Islamic Rise

If you read this, it would appear that the analysts are surprised by this development even though it was a "fear" or concern at the time.

How many of us predicted that this would happen and that it was the only thing that would happen instead of  "democracy?"  I mean, really, with the Muslim Bro'Hood involved, was there any other direction this could have gone?  For pete's sake, this was easier than shooting fish in a barrel!  The biggest clue?  DuhOne communicating with the Bro'Hood!

And there's a paragraph that says this:

Worrisome in their own right, these developments also raise difficult questions, in an already contentious political season, about the conduct of President Obama and his national security team: Has the White House done all it could to steer the Arab Spring in the right direction? Have events to date strengthened U.S. security – or left America weakened abroad, with Islamic fundamentalism ascendant?

The answer is real simple, the WH steered it in the Islamic direction.  The clue for that?  Soetoro's obvious joy about the way it's going over there, he cheered for it, for God's sake.  Not Allah, you muslim poser, GOD!

Then there's this:

Some conservatives, however, are inclined to blame the Obama administration for mishandling the Mideast upheaval.

These conservatives need to change that line of thinking, it wasn't MISHANDLING, it was DELIBERATE.  Stop being nansy-pansies about the whole thing, Conservatives and Republicans!  We have a Muslim in the White House!

This is the kind of thing I and others have mentioned on here time and time again, these things are not the acts of an incompetent.

IRS Gone Bad: Are Things About to Get Even Worse?

Submitted by upcountrywater on Fri, 10/28/2011 - 4:11pm.

Clients have been liened without notice to their representatives. Installment plans were canceled without warning or explanation. Reconsideration requests were summarily denied. The word “abuse” in reference to IRS popped up more than once.

Even more worrisome, the turnabout is quite sudden: budget cuts are already being contemplated for as soon as mid-November 2011. With the 2012 tax season just a few months out, I fear the IRS has already been forced to sharpen their knives.

Utterly typical, BK

Submitted by Blonde on Fri, 10/28/2011 - 6:14pm.

Rush read a transcript of Herman Cain today, being interviewed on FBN....which kind of flies in the face of the typical Democrat meme of Republicans as racists:

RUSH: Just this afternoon on the Fox business channel, Fox Business Network, they talked to Herman Cain. They were on Cain's bus down in Talladega, Alabama; and one of the Fox correspondents, a guy named "Barnes," said, "The last presidential candidate to come to Talladega was former Alabama Governor George Wallace, a segregationist."

CAIN: I remember being on the bus in Atlanta riding as a young teenager where I would see the sign at the front of the bus that said, "Whites seat from front. Colored seat from rear," and I had to sit in the back of the bus because of the greatness of America and the fact that we have this ability to change, that's one of the things that has made us great. And today I don't have to sit in the back of the bus. I own the bus, and my picture is on the outside! That's the greatness of America -- and, I'm running for president of the United States of America! It doesn't get any better than that.

WE NEED TO HAVE A NATIONAL TEA PARTY DAY in NOVEMBER

We need the various Tea Party groups around the country to secure permits for having an event, as we did last year, where current OWS idiots are squatting. Waaaaa Double Standards, naw.

Submitted by Less1leg on Sat, 10/29/2011 - 5:11am.

Its intriging to read about the OWS groups as they waste more time griping about injustice and rights, and all kinds of stuff. Funny, how they talk about "rights" and " freedoms", when they themselves brandish the sword to remove other people's rights and freedoms.
But its staging marches, and protests, and even better "occupying" public property without permits. Then, to tell the Press that they shouldn't be photographing their encampment locations or physical violence may accompany them or have their equipment damaged. Hmmm.
You, Flea Party people are using what? Hmmm. Public property, without permits to be there, put up tenting on public land not zoned for camping. And even make a mess out of the public lands without cleaning up after yourselves. Funny how all this happens huh?
Then the new story. Actual homeless people come to your publicly owned land areas where Flea Party people have put up tents. And you don't offer them the Free Food that your organizers demand the 1%ers divide up their personal wealth to redistribute their incomes and prosperity to all others, as in the other 99%. But some how I'm missing something. Its OK to dip into another person's bank account, take or squat on other people's personal property if vacant, even take food off another person's personal property (farmland). But its not acceptable for the homeless to share the foods of the Flea Party organizers staking ownership over public lands during this OWS deal. Just weird.
