Open Thread: Obama's Hollywood Ties

By NB Staff | October 26, 2011 | 11:09

A  A

Besides stopping by for an appearance with Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" yesterday, President Obama held an undisclosed meeting with high-level Hollywood executives and celebrity representatives.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the event was not a fundraiser and attendees were not expected to donate to Obama's campaign, but those in attendance were all previous Obama supporters and are considered "'influencers' with the ability to help Obama shape the national political conversation heading into...2012."

What do you make of the secretive Hollywood meeting? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Among those invited to the event were Miramax co-founder head Harvey Weinstein, CAA's managing partner and music head Rob Light, "Modern Family" creator Steve Levitan, Atlantic Records chairman Craig Kallman, Warner Bros. Records president Livia Tortella, and actor Kal Penn.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the meeting was fairly laid back.

...[T]he vibe was casual. The president appeared for about 25 to 30 minutes, telling the group that his campaign would be tough and he needed their help to engage the Hollywood community in particular and the general public at large.

This meeting followed Obama's Monday night fundraiser at the home of Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith, which cost at least $5,000 to attend. At the fundraiser, Obama told the 200 guests, "We've got about 60 percent done...I'm pretty confident we can get the next 40 percent done in the next five years." The attendees of yesterday's executive meeting all have the power to continue delivering more celebrities to major campaign events in the future.

Hollywood liberals trying to help a Democratic president is no surprise, but will it make any difference?

Nobama might consider that…

…if he has to go on Leno’s show to get an audience – perhaps people have just stopped listening to anything he has to say. I know I have.

The Leno appearance is an attempt to...

try to recapture and reignite the younger voters who were behind him in '08, who have become very disillusioned with him...Obama's getting desperate. He's lost the independents, he never had the Republicans, and his base is less than thrilled with him, so he's running around the country like a chicken with its head cut off, trying to reingratiate himself with the groups that supported him in '08.

And to your point about whether people have stopped listening to Obama? Yep...Most Americans have stopped listening to him, and don't believe much of what comes out of his mouth anymore...They don't listen to him, they don't trust him, and they've lost confidence in him.

How apropos.

Submitted by jon_torlin on Wed, 10/26/2011 - 11:36am.

The word for this is apropos.  How fitting that a bogus potus has to go to a group of people who specialize in all things Hollywood which is making movies and TV shows of FICTION and it's not a fundraiser but to talk to "influencers."

So DuhOne's trying to win us over with fiction.  He's been fictional ever since he came into the public eye.

Sorry, that's one show I ain't watching.

Yeah, no ka oi, I was reading last night that Barry said - in some speech yesterday - that we have lost our inspiration and imagination (or some such words) here in the USA. Speaking for myself - I'd be VERY inspired to get rid of him, and I can imagine what a better future we might have, once he is gone........................although I know it's going to be a tough road, given all the damage that the REGIME has done.

The Obama State Department has spent $70,000.000 on the purchase of Obama's own books. Obama's spokesman has yet to release a comment.

Hillary, what the heck were you thinking? Not even your own husband would do something like that! It is the epitome of corruption!

Hollywood better check the rear view mirror

Submitted by MidAmerica on Wed, 10/26/2011 - 1:01pm.

I'm not too concerned about a failing President getting help from a flailing Hollywood.  Hollywood is in decline as is this President.  I watched a report on tv yesterday about Bollywood raising their technical level and someday hope to compete directly with Hollywood.  That would be fine with me.  Competition would make for better product and Hollywood definitely needs better product.

Spread that money around, Obama!

Submitted by PrairieSky on Wed, 10/26/2011 - 1:28pm.

Boy, Obama's spreading our money around again, isn't he? In Nevada, he's telling everyone he'll bail them out of their housing troubles, and now in Denver, he's telling college students he'll help them pay for college..All with the taxpayer's money...Again.

He's no doubt going to continue to keep passing out the goodies in a desperate attempt to try to bribe the voters into re-electing him...Good luck with that one, Barack.

people have stopped listening to Hollywood

Submitted by SouthJersey1953 on Wed, 10/26/2011 - 1:32pm.

I think people are generally tired of hearing what the Hollywood elite have to say and are seriously starting to realize that just because someone is an actor, doesn't mean they know anything about real life.

Cain Smoking Ad

Submitted by BuffNBone on Wed, 10/26/2011 - 2:35pm.

I haven't seen the ad but it sounded like someone taking a break after successfully achieving a climactic event like a "romp in the hay". For some it might be a ham sandwich and others a cigarette.

So not wanting to offend muslims possibly the producers opted for the cigarette image instead of one where someone chomps down a pork sandwich.

ex-ACORN behind OWS

Submitted by jon_torlin on Wed, 10/26/2011 - 2:43pm.

Looks like Fox News got an exclusive that the people who were in ACORN are behind the "leaderless" Occupy Wall Street.  That's another group besides CAIR doing some of them in Florida and a couple of other locations and Soros bankrolling a large part of it if not the whole thing.

ACORN Behind the Scenes

It's amazing the level of idiocy but also deceit that's behind this Occupy movement compared to the TEA Party rallies which were truly legit.

A decision was made to get Michele more involved in the campaign. Obama has convinced Hollywood to reinstate those informational shorts that precede the main feature. The first to be produced will be titled Knitting With Michele and Perfect Pie Crust, the First Lady's Way.

Hey. They believed Hope and Change, didn't they?
