Bozell: Congress Must Stop Using Taxpayer Money to Fund Left-Wing Propaganda at PBS, NPR

By NB Staff | October 06, 2011 | 10:45

A  A

"It’s an outrage that federal money has been an enabler for NPR and PBS since 1967 in their efforts to undermine conservatives and Christians," NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell complained in a statement released this morning that accompanies the release of a new Media Research Center (MRC) study detailing a comprehensive compilation of the 20 most memorable leftist excesses of National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting System.

"In this current era of huge deficits, surely this is the most non-essential spending. The pattern of bias from PBS hosts and contributors is more than severe. Now is the time for Congress to finally put an end to it," the MRC founder argued.

Some of the 20 instances in the MRC’s report on NPR & PBS include:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓
  • PBS host Tavis Smiley insists America has a terrible Christian terrorist problem. In 2010, he told an author that Christians blow up people “every day” in the United States.
  • NPR reporter Nina Totenberg wishes Jesse Helms death from AIDS. When Helms insisted in 1995 that AIDS drew a disproportionate amount of federal funding, Totenberg was disproportionately mean-spirited.
  • PBS regular Julianne Malveaux hopes Clarence Thomas dies young of heart disease. On the talk show To the Contrary in 1994, panelist Malveaux proclaimed, “I hope his wife feeds him lots of eggs and butter and he dies early like many black men do, of heart disease.”
  • Longtime PBS host Bill Moyers proclaims GOP officials wearing flag pins after 9/11 remind him of communist China. On his weekly show Now in 2003, Moyers ranted, “When I see flags sprouting on official lapels, I think of the time in China when I saw Mao's Little Red Book.”

Defund?

Submitted by HockeyKid on Thu, 10/06/2011 - 11:06am.

Heck, the government should be charging PBS and NPR retroactive fees for propping them up all these years. It's been proven pretty conclusively that any programming worth a look can find sponsorship in the open market. HGTV and DIY Network clearly demonstrate that nobody needs the government to keep "quality programming like This Old House" on the air.

I don't have such a problem with Tavis Smiley; he produces a good show that I like to listen to, even if I disagree with everything he says. There is no attempt to portray it as not an opinion show. I just think they could come up with something similar from the right. Someone like Mark Steyn could do a very good show. It's the Bill Moyers types that are inexcusable, because they are held out as journalists and given funding to match.

in the House, and then see what fate befalls those measures in the Senate. Remember, we don't yet have control of the Senate, so much progress in the House still gets stalled there. In particular, the House passed the defund NPR bill (HR 1076) in March.

If we get the Senate and the Presidency (or at least a large enough majority in both houses to override a veto, we can truly get things done.

This should have been a no brainer and easily achieved. I get that we can't have everythiing but this one makes me worried that once again the Repubs lack the stones to take on the cultural left.

How is this easily achieved? Do you think the Democrats in the Senate are going to give up a media source that supports their agenda?

It is either congress totally

Submitted by ForeverOnTheRight on Thu, 10/06/2011 - 12:53pm.

It is either congress totally defund these programs or congress selectively fund only the programs that are not politically biased, or controversial. PBS has programs that are not political but support the New Age religious philosophy, or push evolution which is part of secular humanism. which "worships" man and has no divine deity other than man.

Right is never wrong, Left is never right.

Much as I like & respect Brent Bozell...

Submitted by DaMav on Thu, 10/06/2011 - 1:15pm.

The government needs to get 100% out of funding media, period. I would find a 'balanced" or even an ostensibly pro-Republican network equally odious. Peddling partisan politics is not a legitimate function of government. Period.

The Republicans screwed up when they backed off on defunding promises during the early Bush years. Instead they proudly said they would balance it. Bottom line, they were too gutless to take on Big Bird and do what needed to be done. Look how that worked out.

Interesting read...

.....but really can't use this.

About thirteen of the points brought up happen around 20 or more years ago (16-25 yrs)! The most recent infraction was more than a year ago. Surely there's been more, and more recently. If we're going back that far, I'd expect the list to be closer to 100.

I do remember watching that round table with Mike Wallace at the time...I was dumbstruck by his answer. A lot of the military folk in that panel did put him in his place. Amazing how these journalists would be shills for our enemies in war in the name of objectivity, but refuse to be objective when it comes to Obama and other liberal ilk.

Hell...these guys can barely report on a perpetrator's party if it's a Democrat.
