Open Thread: Can Democrats Keep Weiner's Seat?
While former Rep. Anthony Weiner's district is not always a Democratic stronghold, it does tend to vote more liberally. David Weprin, the Democratic New York State assemblyman running in the special election for Weiner's former seat is not the greatest candidate, either. A few weeks ago, he told a newspaper that he thought the national debt was around only $4 trillion. With a weak Democratic candidate, some are wondering if Republican Bob Turner can take the seat, and if he does, hold it in the November election as well.
So far, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has already spent nearly $500,000 in TV ad spots in the district, which began airing yesterday and will continue through Monday. The Democratic House Majority PAC has also bought additional advertising time to support Weprin. If Turner still pulls a win, do you think he could also hold the seat in November if a stronger candidate ran against him? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Just hours after the DCCC's ads began airing, though, they had to pull one that showed Weprin's jet flying low over Manhattan, only days before the tenth anniversary of 9/11. That wasn't the only stumble for Weprin, either. Another influential Democratic assemblyman actually endorsed Turner for his background as a businessman and as a "message to President Obama about his failed, disastrous economic policies...".
Do you think a Republican win in Queens, NY would send a strong message to Obama about his failed policies? Or do you think Democrats can find a stronger candidate than Weprin in November if Weprin doesn't win the special election?

they always find a way to pull out the win. This is all about making a big deal out of it so it looks like a big victory in the end.
I have to defer to New Yorkers on this one, but . . .

. . . wasn't the NY State legislature going to drop Weiner's old district as one of the two House seats the state has to yield following the 2010 census? Or has that idea been abandoned since Weiner resigned?
I will have to check that

I will have to check that Galvanic. I thought his district was going away too.
Probably depends...

"Former Democratic New York Mayor Ed Koch said Tuesday he wants Republicans to take the district formerly represented by Rep. Anthony Weiner–a seat held by Democrats for decades.
Expressing outrage over President Barack Obama's views on Israel, Koch warned in an interview that the Sept. 13 special election to replace Weiner could become a bellwether on the president's recent calls for Israel to return to its 1967 borders with land swaps.
New York's 9th congressional district, which covers parts of Brooklyn and Queens, is one of the most Jewish districts in the country..."

One year at NB… and I get an OT about a wiener-seat??? …
Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Fri, 09/09/2011 - 10:18am.
… Come-on NB, cut me some slack! I graciously did not mention my actual one year anniversary here (yesterday) so as to not embarrass the President by forcing him to reschedule his speech once again. Wasn’t that enough???
… Having my renters move-out yesterday, breaking their1year lease because they decided to divorce and with the wife running off to Minnesota , abandoning her two kids, to be with her boyfriend was an ugly situation! Wasn’t that enough?
… Having my favorite “watering-hole” raise their happy hour beer prices by 50 cents was just another kick in the teeth yesterday. Wasn’t that enough?
… Finding out yesterday that the woman I asked to have dinner with me tonight has a criminal record for kiting checks. Wasn’t that enough?
… Yesterday I realized that I’m out of paper napkins! But, evidently that is still not enough for you!
Now the final insult! An OT about Anthony Wiener’s House Seat! Oh the horror!!
Thanks a bunch NB! The 24 hours of my 1 year anniversary is now just perfect!!!

P.s.: I’ll stick around another year… just because this site is too good to pass-up. Thanks NB! :o)

My wife's 2005 Mercury Mariner got flooded. She has been wanting a new car for a while. We lost some shingles off the roof. My son lost his house and car. Both were flooded. We'll make it. We are following Maria now. It is taking the same path as Irene. If it comes it will be next weekend. The best thing about a hurricane is that the surf fishing along the coast is great right after it passes.
Sorry to hear about your losses, Rick...

Might as well have a good attitude. You know this monster is off the coast and headed this way. You know the damage it is capable of doing. . You know you are going to lose power and the roads will probably be blocked by downed trees. You know that it may be a couple days before you can get out because of the flooding. You can't stop it so you get ready for it.
Well...

Happy one plus one !!
Despite the income drop, no renters is oft times better than worrisome renters.
Raising happy hour prices should be a felony; punishable by serving on Moochelle Obama's staff, without pay, until January, 2013.
Go ahead with dinner plans, order top of the menu, and allow the belle of the book of bouncing bounty to treat.
This is one time where if you are out of paper, using plastic is really not a viable alternative.
As much as I dislike Anthony Weiner for the smarmy, disgusting little worm he is; watching his self-immolation was without a doubt (based on the eventual outcome) the most satisfying political spectacle I have witnessed in a long time.
Hang in there, Grumpster; this place would not be near the fun without your posts.

Fed Gov't not helping with fires
Submitted by jon_torlin on Fri, 09/09/2011 - 12:13pm.
I'm real proud of the federal government that's been helping us out with the fires and etc in Texas for the last several months. They let us use the firefighting planes and heavy equipment to contain the fires in rapid short order went a long ways with us. And the aid that Governor Perry requested was expedited. God I love this government!
Ok, obviously none of the above happened.
We really are on our own with help from other states at the state level. It's things like this that it makes it real easy to want to tell the federal government to shove it and post national guards at key places where the fed government may want to come in to cause problems, like our power plants. Put simply, they are not part of the solution, they are not just part of the problem, they ARE the problem.
Each day it feels like we're just drifting apart, that what used to make this country great is slowing withering away because of people like Soetoro and his minions like Nappy and Holder, while we are under assault from the cartels and the Mexican military. And his "re-elect me" speech last night, while it was fun to make fun of, really left me in a sour mood. You gotta love the Republicans for not standing up like trained seals all the time and kudos for Boehner for staying seated while waiting for the blah-blahs to stop.
God what a pathetic situation.
