Open Thread: Why Did Obama Walk Out on Debt Negotiations?

By NB Staff | July 14, 2011 | 10:20

A  A

Two days after Anderson Cooper described President Barack Obama as the "adult" in a room of unruly Republicans, Obama reportedly stormed out of a heated discussion on debt negotiations yesterday due to his frustration with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.

Also yesterday came a stern reminder from House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi that the president has repeatedly listened to the concerns of Congress but that "nobody can out debate him." Check out a video of Pelosi's remarks after the break, and let us know what you think of Obama's actions in the comments.

According to Politico, the debt negotiation drama came after a bitter debate between Obama and Cantor.

“He shoved back and said ‘I’ll see you tomorrow’ and walked out,”House Majority Leader Eric Cantor(R-Va.) told reporters in the Capitol after the meeting. [...]

When Cantor said the two sides were too far apart to get a deal that could pass the House by the Treasury Department’s Aug. 2 deadline — and that he would consider moving a short-term debt-limit increase alongside smaller spending cuts — Obama began to lecture him.

“Eric, don’t call my bluff,” the president said, warning Cantor that he would take his case “to the American people.” He told Cantor that no other president — not Ronald Reagan, the president said — would sit through such negotiations.

Democratic sources dispute Cantor’s version of Obama’s walk out, but all sides agree that the two had a blow up. The sources described Obama as “impassioned” but said he didn’t exactly storm out of the room.

A Democratic aide furthered the Anderson Cooper line in regards to Cantor, saying, "This is just more juvenile behavior from him and Boehner needs to rein him in, and let the grown-ups get to work.”

While the two accounts of Obama's exit from the room don't quite match up, both are in contradiction to Pelosi's remarks that Obama has been incredibly patient in listening to the concerns of Congress.

Some "adult"...

Submitted by Chris Norman on Thu, 07/14/2011 - 10:29am.

Is an "adult" someone who let's the liberal children have everything they want? "Sure, kids, we'll just get Visa to increase the limit on the ol' credit card and we'll keep on charging". Some "adult".

Scuba Dude: Exactly correct!

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Thu, 07/14/2011 - 10:55am.

And although the botox-meister Pelosi believes that no one can out debate him, his lack of experience in negotiating with seasoned political veterans brings his temper tantrums to the forefront... I mean it must be terribly frustrating for him to have to "deal" with people who aren't buying into his "I can walk on water" shtick.

Side note: While watching the Pelosi video, I couldn't help but noticing those are pretty attractive chairs around the table... as for what Madam Botox was saying, I have no idea, just tuned her out.

The incompetent stooge

Submitted by NotFondOfLibs on Thu, 07/14/2011 - 10:31am.

Obama's behavior is consistent with someone who has no arguing or debating points and is incapable of addressing an issue head on unless HE gets his way. He walks away from anyone who has the facts and challenges him. The Republicans should stand their ground and not give this jerk one inch of maneuvering ground.

I'm sure when tingles finds out obumblebutt has lost the election, the tingle up his leg will turn into a bullet to his brain. Not being able to have a reasonable conversation with someone that disagrees with him would be the perfect replacement for Chris.

I think I'm starting to get a tingle up my leg for Nancy, she is so hot, and if I were able to coerce her into bed, she'd be telling everyone I have a 12 inch Anthony W., she is such a good liar. Oooh baby.

Obama was an overindulged

Submitted by Gat New York on Thu, 07/14/2011 - 11:04am.

Obama was an overindulged child who was brought up to believe that whatever he did was right and that everyone else was wrong - that he was better than anyone. He never learned humility.

Every crisis situation he has been involved with repeats this narrative and constantly places him in trouble. The only way out is media bias.

What has further undercut the media is the NY Times book review that Obama lied about his mother being rejected by CIGNA because of a pre-existing condition (cancer). CIGNA documents say that everything was paid for.

What is becoming evident to American people, despite the media, is that Obama lacks mature management abilities and is, himself, extremely immature in his dealings.

Submitted by iveseenitall on Thu, 07/14/2011 - 10:39am.

The child is clearly frustrated because he's being forced to WORK for a change. After all, he had to cancel a vacation, stop the planning for his upcoming birthday party, call his hoop budies and cancel a pick-up game, on and on. Remember, he said he'd rather be figuring out the NFL lockout than working on the nation's economy. The adolescent loser just can't take the "pressure" any more. Obama's handlers see this as his defining moment

Submitted by Galvanic on Thu, 07/14/2011 - 10:53am.

The DNC and Obama's handlers need the voters to forget the Stimulus and Obamacare, because no matter how much spin they've applied and how much finger-pointing they've aimed at the Republicans, the polls show that the voters haven't been swayed.  The Far Left wants Obama to put the GOP in its place.

So, this is the opportunity and the stage is set.  Obama knows that if he is perceived as losing this moment, his re-election chances are doomed, so he provides a lot of melodrama for the Left and the MSM to establish himself as the only firewall between the American public and Republican nation-wrecking.

And so far, that plan appears to be working well with the MSM, though it's too early to gauge the impact on the voters.

Don't forget that the model for this gamesmanship is Clinton, who managed to convince a majority of Americans that it was Gingrich and the Republican Congress that shut the government down, rather than his veto of the Federal budget bill.  And that image persists today.

Is Obama as slick as Clinton?  Can he pull it off like Clinton did?  I think we're find out between now and August 2.

would know better than to say "Don't call my bluff", suggesting that it actually is a bluff. Of course a bluffer does not want people to call his bluff and when you say "my bluff" you're actually owning it.

In honesty it is simply no more than bad phrasing. I'm not even going to go the "Freudian slip" route of liberals that like to commandeer peoples words and meanings. Despite the advisability of saying "Don't think you're calling my bluff" or "Don't go all in because you think you're calling my bluff", this is just about as damning as many "Bushisms" that the left used to amuse themselves with. It's still fun, if nettling to libs, to speculate what he might have meant by "my bluff"...

Reality bites!

Submitted by Blonde on Thu, 07/14/2011 - 11:43am.

I love it. Eric Cantor is one nasty piece of work. He grew up in the environment of politics (his dad worked for Ronald Reagan as his campaign treasurer)....so the game is ingrained in his very DNA.

I'm not surprised he got Obama's goat.

The next thing "we" need to do at these meetings is to replace Mitch McConnell (right after we strip him and paint a yellow stripe up his back) with Marco Rubio....who actually called Obama "not competent" in his interview with Rush Limbaugh on Monday.

Can you imagine how infuriated Obama would be with Marco sitting across the table from him? Just the sheer presence of a "young, good-looking, articulate (for real this time) up-and-coming political superstar" would make Obama cry. For that matter, let's bring Allen West, too....that way we can add "black" to the aforementioned list.

Note to Harry Reid...if you ask for Cantor to be dismissed, Nanny's gotta go as well. And she's not going to like that!

Nancy says "no one can out-debate him"

Submitted by TheHistorian on Thu, 07/14/2011 - 11:31am.

There are two reasons for that Nancy:

  1.  Because his teleprompter organizes his thoughts. Without it, Nancy, it takes 30 minutes to get a semi-coherent thought out of him.
  2. Because he storms out of the room when someone out-debates him.

Nancy,  you ought to take your talking points and put them on your pineapple or grapes to make them grow.  Otherwise, the rest of us call it manure in polite terms.  You are a  fraud and a failure, and the stupid people of SanFrancisco should be ashamed that they ever  voted for your sorry politics.

On Obama's Coat-of-Arms

Submitted by AMR1960 on Thu, 07/14/2011 - 12:02pm.

Obama styles himself as REGAL…

In keeping with his delusion his Coat-of-Arms would have the following:

A Commode- Because everything he touches turns to fecal matter.

A Box of Kleenex- To dry his eyes, and wipe his nose when he has one of his "wee-wee moments"

The number 1040- To show Obama's love of taxation.

2012 can't arrive soon enough

Wasn't today the deadline by Turbo-Timmy to have a deal reached?  Hm, nothing's happened so far except Obeyme got wee-wee'd up.

And there was talk about doing these negotiations at Camp David, which Boehner turned down, saying "no need."  Maybe he is growing a pair and sticking to his guns and will do the right thing after all?

This political kabuki theater is doing absolutely nothing for our economy, our nation, or our nerves. All of those bozos need to be thrown out of Washington on their ear. It's too bad there is no Constitutional provision for recall of Congressmen or the President. And why the GOP leadership isn't busy preparing Articles of Impeachment instead of debating over budget cuts is beyond me. Remove Obama from office, the economy takes care of itself (after repealing all those pesky Executive Orders).

And as far as the media is concerned, I can certainly do without their bloviating, their obfuscation, their outright lies, and their attempted manipulation of the political environment. In other words, they can go straight to Hades.

He is having his bluff called and it becomes more and more self evident daily that not only does he not have the cards, the ones he does have aren't even matching the deck. SO many decks used to build his house of cards have him so confused he cannot keep straight which noes he used when.

The implosion continues.

The Birth certificate forgery and GunWalker are proving inescapable for him, and he knows that things are crumbling around him. Notice Trump back on the horse yesterday? Gee, why do we suppose that is? Why wold Barry make such a scorched Earth comment about not sending out Social Security checks? It is because he knows the round ending bell ringing is a long way off yet and he is being flogged on all fronts. His back is against the ropes and he is being pummeled by his own lies.

Barry knows his time is short.

Now, I just heard Barnicle the idiot/plagarizer say of Michelle Bachmann "She wants to tie repealing OBAMACARE to the debt ceiling debate, what a ninny {paraphrase} do 1 thing at a time!!!"

I contend HE is the ninny, and the R's need to STRESS the connection between spending, regulation, and taxes with the raise/no raise of the debt ceiling or as bad as Pres. "I Won" {sorry, can't muster up an ounce of respect for this tool} is at this "game" he WILL win!!!

Submitted by mattm on Thu, 07/14/2011 - 4:38pm.

He's doing exactly what Dayton is doing in Minnesota. Look for a federal government shutdown in the near future if the Minnesota shutdown goes as the Demonrats plan.

The republicans, again, need to grow a pair and take these usurpers to the woodshed.  Obama can and should be impeached, his forged birth certificate and his illegal war should suffice.  As for Dayton, his shutdown was part of a pre-planned campaign strategy to damage republicans for the next election.

Should suffice?

Submitted by jon_torlin on Thu, 07/14/2011 - 5:17pm.

While I agree with what you said, what irks me is that even though you say "it should suffice," at least to those of us around here, apparently the republicans are waiting for something more or making a list, whatever it is, some kind of threshold to be reached before they will even talk about pursuing an impeachment!

Look at Clinton, he got impeached on PERJURY, which pales in comparison to everything we've seen so far by the bogus potus.

You mentioned those two things, add more to that, he committed extortion on TV (threatening checks for SS recipients), someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that a crime?  Then his threat to use the 14th Amendment as justification to unilaterally raise the debt limit(does no such thing), dereliction of duty as a Commander in Chief, the border situation(especially after his thing in El Paso), the TSA, the EPA, and a few others.

So with all that, where's the line to cross?  That's what's mystifying about the whole thing.

Jer, were you referring to Bambi or Snarlee?

Why does Bambi keep having press conferences and meetings to say, "Wait for me.  I'm your leader!"?  Most people recognize a leader when they see one.  Apparently it's not so apparent in this case.

Reminds me of an Officer Efficiency Report a general officer wrote on a 2nd Lieutenant (true story) who was REALLY a lousy officer.  All the General wrote was, "Why anyone would follow this officer, except out of sheer curiosity, is beyond me."  I kind of feel like that about the Dear Leader(?).

But he's really a good man, and very articulate.  After all he wants to "Save the Wails" and "Pray for Whirled Peas."  But he really should learn not to say, "Don't call my bluff" when he's bluffing.  Guess they didn't teach that at Haaaavud.

alleged cuts.  The Senate dems want to cut 3 dollars from the Defense Dept, for every dollar cut from the waste and bloat in the rest of the ENTIRE federal budget.  And without touching Medicare, Medicaid and SS.  SO, what exactly will they cut?

Let's see, the Dem's Senate plan would cut the size of the Federal vehicle fleet by 20%?  Hmmm, what about all those Chevy Volts they promised to buy?  Cut the travel budget of Federal Agencies by 20%, again, what about those Chevy Volts?  Or, will the employees have to fly coach now?  And cut printing costs?  Wow!!  That's just terrific.

Meanwhile the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force, who, by the way, are mandated to be maintained, take the biggest hit of all.  Who cares if the SEALS might be on their 6th deployment overseas, Obama doesn't want to pay them, anyway.  But, keep that 767 in reserve, maybe Pelousy will be back in the Speaker's chair in '12?  And, stock the bar and charge it to the Defense Department.

To re-elect Obama would be like the Titanic backing up and hitting the iceberg again.

Throw chaff, throw chaff, stonewall, guffaw, and then do the one-eighty about how seriousness is required when their guy shows some flaws.

The "smartest kid in the classroom" just said one of the dumbest things I've ever heard anybody say.

I don't know why I say Li'l Eddy instead of Li'l Eric...

Submitted by Jer on Thu, 07/14/2011 - 10:37pm.

[well, I'm sure it's name-conflation with the performer Eddy Cantor] but, in any event, here is a photo of Congressman Cantor--proud, confident and statesmanlike--prior to the youngster's tearful, lip-quivering conniption yesterday. But, the WH has invited him back. Maybe he'll behave like an adult next time.

If he does, and

Submitted by UpNorth on Thu, 07/14/2011 - 11:16pm.

he and O are alone in the room, that would make one adult in the room.  Right, Jer?  And it won't be the community organizer.

And, again, you didn't address the lie that the WH was pushing that they didn't exclude Fox from an interview.  So, how's about the claim that O didn't walk out?  Will we have to wait another 18 months to see the results of another FOIA?

Youngster?

Submitted by Blonde on Fri, 07/15/2011 - 12:48am.

He's 48 years old, has been a member of Congress for over ten years (a tad more experience than Bammy, eh?)...and was in the Va. legislature for ten years before that. Oh yeah, and his daddy was Reagan's campaign finance manager.   Pretty nice pedigree, you must admit.

Your snide description holds no water, Jer.

Eric Cantor might be a mean little plick, but he's far more experienced than Obama. Smarter, too. He got the best of Obama, not the other way around. Obama's rep for petulance is expanding exponentially. My one sincere hope is that Boehner & McConnell bring both Marco Rubio and Allen West into this little fray, Obama will lose his mind to these two....Marco is younger, prettier, smarter, and both more articulate and more of a rock star than O.   Allen West is black and a much bigger badass with his eyes closed and his bedroom slippers on than Obama could ever dream to be.

for the R's to send a delegation of "mean little plicks" up to the WH. That's all that the petulant, small, narcissus will understand, and the meeting shouldn't take all that long.

I'd be happy to see Cantor, Rubio and West be the only ones to go to the next meeting, along with their respective leaders.  Knowing that Ear Leader would just go nuts at that.

To re-elect Obama would be like the Titanic backing up and hitting the iceberg again.

I am more in love with Marco & Allen every day

Submitted by Blonde on Fri, 07/15/2011 - 1:09am.

On Tuesday, Marco named this emperor with no clothes correctly (in an interview with Rush Limbaugh)....INCOMPETENT.

I saw Allen interviewed today....and the interviewer asked how he could be sure it wouldn't be "politics as usual"...to which he replied "because I'm here".

The Tea Party freshman are not going to allow any grandiose idiot "deal". The Republican powers that be have twigged to that fact. Mitch McConnell can kiss my ass with his deal, it's not going to happen that way. We have another election in sixteen months, and the broom is still hot.

a. Cantor acted like a spoiled brat

b. The President, older than Cantor, is constantly derided as "that little boy" by his critics--and that's one of the more complimentary terms

c. And, furthermore, I'm at the age now where anyone less than 50 qualifies as a youngster.

Submitted by Blonde on Fri, 07/15/2011 - 1:06am.

You look like an idiot arguing this point. Cantor is not 26 serving his first term, he's a legislator with over 20 years of experience...and Obama is the nOOb in this big boy game. Obviously at a huge disadvantage because his only experience was as a gun holding community organizer, a la Jesse Jackson and Rainbow Push, negotiating with the only weapon in his arsenal as public blackmail. Oops.

Obama is the one acting like a spoiled brat.....remember "elections have consequences, I won"? Well, now we've had another election, and Obama lost.

Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander....Halperin was correct. Obama is acting like a Big Richard.

"Give it a rest" is barking orders?

Submitted by Blonde on Fri, 07/15/2011 - 1:41am.

Your skin is thinner than Obama's.

I notice you didn't address the FACTS I stated....you may not like Eric Cantor, and it's more than obvious that you don't respect him. But the fact IS he is not a "child", and he has FAR MORE experience than Obama in the political arena.

Ignore that at your own peril, and of course, feel free to have your feathers ruffled by FACTS. Oh...and it is a fact that your persistence in characterizing Cantor as such, here, on a conservative site, DOES make you look like an idiot.

I know facts are hard for liberals. But you really ought to try to live in "realville", to *ahem* coin a phrase.

P.S. When I choose to bark orders, you'll know it.

It's okay to refer to the President as a "jug-eared, piece of sh!t SOB, purple-lipped rat bastard commie Kenyan", but calling Eric Cantor a "youngster" is an inexcusable offense which I commit at my peril and risks your REALLY barking orders at me in the future. Because this IS a conservative site, after all.

Is all of that in some recently amended terms of use which I haven't seen yet?

about Obama. I could very easily point to the incredible Bush nonsense/name calling that the liberal trolls routinely use here, but since you are merely a liberal and a not a troll, I won't stoop to the tactic that you just used.

However, I digress. I see you are still refusing to acknowledge the FACT that Cantor is an extremely accomplished legislator. But the fact that you incessantly referred to Cantor as a "youngster" and were therefore called out on it, ON A CONSERVATIVE site...seems to befuddle you.

And, of course, "give it a rest" still remains "barking orders" in your lib-land.

If I were you, I'd reconsider your presence here. Thin skinned and whiny isn't a good look. Not on you, not on Obama.

Finally, when I choose to "bark" orders, you'll know it. (Hint...capital letters).

Well, you are not me. And you also are aware that I have never once posted anything personally disparaging about Bush in the four years I've been here. On the contrary, I've often expressed my admiration for him and the entire Bush family.

In light of your previous responses, I wonder just how thin-skinned your reaction may have been if I had popped up out of nowhere and instructed you to "give it a rest" because you were "looking like an idiot". [Hint: I bet the reaction would have involved quite a few capital letters.]

I think you should review your posts and reconsider your comments. Making demands and name-calling doesn't become you.

That's what makes the point

Submitted by Quasi-socialist on Fri, 07/15/2011 - 11:32am.

You don't want to be judged by 1) what others said about Bush, or 2) to the extent that you are known to vocally censure such expressions. So why bust out what others are saying when you know that it does not have the relevance to everybody just based on their being against Obama?

Is "Youngster" so bad? Perhaps not, but "spoiled brat" goes further. We send young people to Congress. There's even a cachet about electing young presidents , and even "youthful exhuberance" is cited as a needed ingredient in politics. So you either mean something more along the lines of "spoiled brat" or you mean nothing really.

As for saying Cantor acted like a "spoiled brat", is about the same as accusing Obama of "storming off". So your argument is an unfounded "No, you!"?

But, regardless, the difference in your own behavior is precisely what makes the type of argument that one should not be treated as a type, when you already distinguish yourself from that type.

If somebody has to say it than I will: I hope I never stoop to "jug-eared" or even "mom--wearing" to criticize the president of the United States. I also hope to never stoop to mispronunciation and gaffes to indicate the intelligence level of people, which gains nothing in my eyes by not being as crass as "jug-eared" or "chimpy"--because it's just stupid. I also hope never to stoop to gaffe-commandeering like "Bachman idolizes John Wayne Gacy." because that's also stupid. Opportunism is a stupid way to make your point, and a good way to get into a tu quoqueargument down the road when some light on your side proves himself human.

Obama's maturity

Submitted by JohnK on Thu, 07/14/2011 - 5:55pm.

If you look at the key elements in Obama's character - his understanding of economic systems, his theories of social structure, his approach to foreign policy, his concept as to what it means to be President of the United States, and, now, his petulant attitude in negotiating with tough opponents - Obama is, in all these aspects, the equivalent of a spoiled college sophomore.

Obama's "position"

Submitted by SaguaroJack on Thu, 07/14/2011 - 9:01pm.

Obama's position, and the 'Crats', is not to specify anything to cut, but to wait for the Pubs to do that and then run to the press: "Looky! They wanna starve widows! See what they plan to cut? Heartless!" That's why the 'Crats won't proffer a budget -- which they haven't done in over 800 days, thus breaking the law. Again.

Cantor's standing has gone WAY up during all this. Boehner didn't have a pair to stand up with. Neither did Obama, but after all, as he will readily remind you, he won. You try to show proper respect to a snot like that and it just ratchets up his arrogance.

Conservatives have respectfully stood by and watched Pubs and Dems run the country into the ditch. It's time we banged our fists down and took charge -- with an attitude. That's all the liberal mob has ever respected. The Pubs? They'll obediently follow anybody who tells them what to do, as the Left has been doing to them for 25 years.

.

You were born American. That's the best break anybody ever got.

Looks like Obama's venting his frustrations on Fox News.

Submitted by Phryj1 on Fri, 07/15/2011 - 12:16am.

Since the same unscrupulous NotW reporters who worked with the sleazeball p.i. in Britain allegedly tried to get info on 9/11 victims here, Obama and congressional Dems have ordered an FBI investigation into News Corp. This shouldn't be necessary because it's pretty clear British authorities have a handle on the situation -and the 9/11 victims in question were British nationals anyway- so it looks politically motivated.

Speaking of which, has anyone else seen some of the anti-Fox News comments floating around on various other blogs and forums? All kinds of absolutely ghoulish cackling at the very possibility that the FBI investigation may lead to the demise of Fox News, the one TV news outlet that actually bothers to criticize Dems and give conservatives a voice on TV. Am I the only one who finds this immensely disturbing?

Fortunately, there is a way this can backfire badly for Obama and the Dems. This investigation could well be a complete waste of time. Then we'd have a situation where a sitting president and his party are exploiting 9/11 victims and wasting taxpayer resources in a vain effort to silence their most prominent critic and the leading voice of their opposition. Looks disturbingly like fascist thuggery.

If Paul Ryan's plan was a 'gift to the Democrats', the Dems attack on Fox News could well be the GOP winning the lottery.

EDIT: Okay, this is what happens when I go off on a rant after skimming an article. I've just been notified (h/t Jer) that a Republican senator, Peter King, requested the FBI investigation. Which I would've noticed earlier had I actually read the entire article about the FBI probe. Excuse me while I wipe the egg off my face.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

Barack Obama is a tax and spend socialist who wants to transform

Submitted by Rush Fan on Thu, 07/14/2011 - 11:06pm.

this nation into another European welfare state. Obama can't accomplish that goal by dealing with deficit-cutting Republicans, and especially with a recalcitrant Eric Cantor.

Unless we defeat Obama in 2012, high unemployment and slow growth will be the norm, along with Greece-like demonstrations in the streets, as unions and others on the government dole demand their portion of the shrinking pie.

The Wall Street Journal's Daniel Henninger wrote a piece yesterday titled The Disappearing Recovery, with a subtitle What if the weak recovery is all the recovery we are going to get?

Henninger begins his article with:

Barack Obama, John Boehner and Mitch McConnell have been performing an intricate scorpion dance over spending, taxes and the debt ceiling, premised on the belief that this is the deal that would ignite the recovery.

But what if it's too late? What if that first-quarter growth rate of 1.8% is a portent of the U.S.'s long-term future? What if below-normal U.S. GDP is, as the Obama folks like to say, the new normal?

Henninger goes on to discuss the thoughts of Robert Lucas, the 1995 Nobel laureate in economics. The dire predictions of Professor Lucas may not be that far off:

"If we're going to move to a European welfare state," says Prof. Lucas, "we're going to have to pay a European price." And that price could be a permanently lower level of GDP per person. The U.S.'s amazing 100-year ride would slow.

Among the many things any such drop in GDP will siphon away is America's relentless productive vitality. "So much new happens in the United States," Prof. Lucas says. But will it still?
