Open Thread: Will Grassroots Work Again for Obama?

By NB Staff | June 30, 2011 | 10:32

A  A

With a poll earlier this month showing that an unnamed Republican candidate could beat President Barack Obama by a narrow margin if the election were held today, Obama's advisers are scrambling to find ways to win his reelection in 2012 amid a $14 trillion debt and three wars.

Obama's dismal poll numbers are leaving his nostalgic advisers grappling to assemble an astroturf campaign reminiscent of his successful 2008 grassroots campaign. As the National Journal's Josh Kraushaar explains, Obama's administration has made a series of critical moves over the past month that reflect their growing concern for Obama's chances in 2012.

Check out Kraushaar's thoughts on Obama's struggling 2012 campaign after the break, and let us know what you think in the comments.

According to Kraushaar, a number of signals from the White House this month show a campaign toiling to position itself as coming out ahead on a number of failures, namely the economy and jobs, and attempting to engage voting blocs not typically seen as hotbeds of Obama support.

1. Searching for an economic message. [...] This is a time when the president needs to find his inner Bill Clinton, and feel Americans’ pain. If he wants to be one of the few presidents to win reelection in a stagnant economy, he’ll have to devote less time to defending past policies, like the auto bailout, and more to offering specific solutions to help people get back to work. Think a 21st century version of FDR’s fireside chats.

But there are few signs that the president’s economic messaging has changed. Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz recently said Democrats own the economy, but they don’t seem to be adapting their message to the bad economy likely to face them in November 2012.

2. Doubling down on manufacturing. [...] While there has been a small uptick in manufacturing jobs, it’s hardly enough to be felt by the blue-collar electorate, who have been bearing the brunt of the recession and never viewed Obama too favorably in the first place. [...]

The president’s emphasis on green jobs doesn’t help. It’s tough for many steelworkers to see themselves producing solar panels. Clean-energy jobs may be the future, but they’re not seen by displaced workers as a panacea.

3. Fresh fundraising concerns. With a strong connection to the grassroots and expertise with social networking, President Obama’s reelection team mastered the art of hitting up small donors in the 2008 campaign.

But there are telltale signs that the grassroots army that propelled him is in a much less giving mood. It’s not a huge surprise; the bad economy has hit Obama’s small donors too. When you’re having trouble paying the bills, you’re not exactly pining to pitch in hard-earned money to help a powerful president. [...]

4. Raising the stakes in the upper South. Obama’s strategists are raising the stakes in the two battleground upper South states, North Carolina and Virginia.

They’ve never been critical cogs in a presidential strategy. If Team Obama sees them as such in 2012, it suggests the campaign is struggling in states that were comfortably on its side in 2008, particularly those in the Rust Belt.

Do you think Obama will be able to reinvigorate his grassroots support of 2008 to bring out the same level of support? Or do you think his young fan base has become jaded and changed their views during his past three years as president?

Submitted by jon_torlin on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 10:52am.

At this point, since the Republican leadership has been rendered neutered, spineless, yellow-bellied, whatever, and they aren't out there actively responding to those BS comments he made(Rush isn't in a leadership position, even though he's responding all right), I don't know what to think anymore about anything.

Hell, the senators are saying they are going to work through the fourth of july weekend, and I have to ask, why?

Why do they even bother, because the Democrats in the senate, especially Dingy Harry, will just claim that the Republicans are being obstructionists and etc and blame them for the sky being blue, BLAH BLAH BLAH.  So what's the point?  The Dems had control for 2 years.  But it doesn't matter at this point.  Even if the Republicans had control, we've seen evidence that they will go spineless at the drop of a hat.  Sure, the freshmen like Rubio might show some enthusiasm and energy but they'll get whipped down by the likes of McConnell.

Ugh, the whole thing makes me sick.

Don't count the Repub's out so quick Jon. If the Republicans can keep the Dems in DC, that will be doing us a favor. Less time for them to get out and lie to their folks at home. The key will be to see what passes. If the republicans blink, then I will call them spineless. If not...well, lets wait and see, uh?

Submitted by ricklail on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 1:01pm.

If they would report on Fast and Furious it would fill at least a months worth of issues.

On the Fast and Furious front , Rep Issa denied Cummings a platform by not allowing a minority hearing. All they wanted to do was talk about gun control. The F&F hearings are not about gun control. So Cummings is having a forum today with speakers like Scmuck Shooomer and a bunch of gun grabbers. Cummings kangroo court

I want to take you back to hearings that Scmuckie had years ago. The lady testifing lost both of her parents during the Luby's massacre in Killen, TX. This lady had a gun in her car but was not allowed to carry into the Ludy's. Look at the expression on Scmuckie's face during here testimony.

But most unemployed people who want to work but can't find jobs because of Dear Leader's gross mismanagement of the economy will, instead of believing the bovine excrement he reads off his teleprompter, use their brains and realize what a charlatan Obama is. They will then vote accordingly. Let's just hope that the Republicans can produce a candidate who, unlike McCain, actually wants to win and will call out Obama for the failure he was, is and will be. Obama is going solely for the moocher, leech, and tick vote

Submitted by Dave. on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 11:04am.

His speech yesterday was a big step in that direction - never mind that eeeeeeeeeeevil corporate CEOs are only on 16% of the flights corporate jets make.

(BTW: That was the most disgusting press conference I have ever seen a president do).

If my fears are correct and there are enough among us who now depend on government for their very existence, Obama's reelection will be assured.

This is not the same America that threw Jihad Jimmy out on his bum in 1980, as we have raised a whole generation of Americans since that do not have the most basic understanding of the economics of their own employment, and who believe it is the responsibility of the government to take care of them.

And we are stupid enough as a nation to allow these people to vote.

Speaking of Corporate Jets, Dave

Submitted by Blonde on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 1:38pm.

Allow me to do the math...not for you, but for the liberals here, who are math challenged.

Obama's "big idea" is thus....it will obtain a $3 billion dollar savings in his projected $4 trillion dollar reduction over ten years.

3,000,000,000 / 4,000,000,000,000 = .00075

That, my friends, is the sum total of the budget "savings" Obama will achieve by his "soak the rich" corporate jet solution.

Now, as a hypothetical, suppose you were trying to achieve a savings of $1,000 over the next ten years. How much will you need to save every year, for the next ten years, in order to have wiped out your debt in ten years? (Since this is a simple example, we will leave interest out of the equation).

That's correct....you'll need to "save" $100 a year, each and every year, for the next ten years, to achieve your goal of $1,000 at the end of ten years. (We're keeping this example really easy).

Now, if we apply Obama's "ten year savings", per the math above, we get our ten year savings number:

$1,000 x .00075 =  75 cents

That's right....in our little example, Obama's brilliant plan has gained us a  grand total of seven and a half cents a YEAR in savings.

The guy is such a genius!

I suppose it depends upon the (R) nominee...

Submitted by Grumpy in Arizona on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 11:30am.

IMHO (and referencing only those declared candisates) - If a "RINO" like Romney, Pawlenty, Gingrich, Huntsman, or Johnson is the choice... Obama wins again.

If relatively single issue candidates such as Santorum or Paul are nominated... Obama might lose or worse might win.

If a "Tea-Party" candidates like Cain or Bachmann get the go-ahead... Obama is toast.

But the real key to victory is to take control of the Senate and strengthen numbers of conservative House members. I am really praying that a lot of the RINO's currently serving get "primaried," but I'm not seeing that movement happen right now.

rick, I'm beginning to wonder about the entire Constitution

Submitted by Dave. on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 2:57pm.

Actually, I have been wondering about it for some time.

I have seen almost no repubs in congress pointing out where the feds are clearly violating the provisions of that document, and you don't hear much at the state level, either.

If people in positions of power don't start speaking our about this sort of thing - like cops tasering granny, sending SWAT teams after school clildren, arresting kids for bringing an aspirin to school, etc., etc., we are going to all wake up in a police state at some point.

I have been seeing more and more instances of law enforcement at several levels trampling the 4th Amendment rights of American citizens.

Did you know that, thanks to the drug "war" and the Patriot Act, your home can now be searched without a warrant, and they aren't required to even tell you they were in your home until months after the fact?

Who knows what "evidence" they might turn up, particularly in the domiciles of those tagged as political enemies?

And that is not being paranoid, as the government already uses the IRS, and other agencies, to go after people they don't like, and have been doing it for years.

Just ask Herman Cain, who had the audacity to challenge Billy Jeff on national TV, and soon after went through one of the most anal IRS audits ever carried out.

"When I look around this room, I see America's future, our doctors, our teachers, our nurses, our engineers, our scientists, our soldiers, our congressmen, our senators, and maybe our president," Mr. Durbin remarked before asking the young people in the room to stand if they were "undocumented" aliens who would be eligible under the DREAM Act. Apparently, a large portion of the audience stood!

Yeah, Rubio really laid into Obama.  :-)

That is what the repubs need to start doing if they are going to have a chance, which is why Romney, Huntsman, and the other RINOs will be a disaster unless they get blown out early in the primaries.

I haven't seen any MSM reaction as yet, but I'm sure they will imply Rubio's comments were somehow racist.

That's all they have left to defend this dangerous president with.

Truly pathetic.

Back to his roots again?

Submitted by CobraMan on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 2:52pm.

So, Obama is trying to get back to his roots again? Let's see, he has African roots, Irish roots, and Hawaiian roots. Now he's after the grassroots? This guy has more roots than a prairie!

Oh, by the way, Obama's reliance on "grassroots" doesn't surprise me at all. Roots, after all, take from the environment, for their own convenience. They don't return anything until they finally rot away.

Also, grassroots are very superficial. Just like Obama, they don't have any depth.

Turbo Tax Timmy about to jump ship?

Submitted by Dave. on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 4:35pm.

If true, good riddance.

Maybe he'll go wreck something else now that he has finished his role of helping to totally wreck our economy.

Anyone who wants to hit the nation's largest block of employers with higher taxes, fees, and regulations - especially during a failing economy that he helped bring about, in order to keep from having to 'shrink government,' should not be allowed anywhere near the reigns of power.

In fact, they should be tarred, feathered, and run out of town on a rail.

This idiot clearly doesn't get it.

BTW - That linked Bloomberg story on Geithner is full of bull:

As Obama’s presidency progressed, and the economy began to recovery, Geithner’s stature grew.

I say BS, as this recession is now in it's 38th month, and Timmy is about two feet shorter than when he started.

Time to circle the wagons!

Submitted by Crew Dawg 64 on Thu, 06/30/2011 - 10:19pm.

In order to beat President Obama next year there are several things that Republicans must do, first diversify the ticket, Bachman and Cain seems to be a winning combination. Next, FULLY back the ticket and don't let the liberal media divide the party. Finally realize that there is no way to bust through liberal thought processes especially if they are being spoon fed by the MSM, so lets hope a lot of independents watch FOX news. Like my aunt replied when asked how in the world could Al Franken be elected to congress, "Democrats would elect a brick if they thought it would win."

Obama finally protect borders

Submitted by Agnostic on Fri, 07/01/2011 - 11:27am.

Of course by treating an ally, Israel, as a terrorist nation while simultaneously removing NK from the same list we are continuing the current administrations goals of isolating the US and increasing the relevancy of any nation wishing for the destruction of the US.  Ayres and Wright must be proud!

"As a matter of policy, (list on page 18 accounts prior to that) according to the inspector general’s report, citizens of Israel and other “specially designated countries” are subjected to a special security screening called a “Third Agency Check” (TAC) when they are actually detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the division of the Department of Homeland Security responsible for enforcing the immigration laws."

Add in the recognition of the Muslim Brotherhood (admitted assassins) and the current administration has seriously shifted the alliances of the US away from any nation that would actually hold any allegence for the US.

This is also yet another reason this bogus potus needs to be removed from office.  Treating our allies like enemies and treat our enemies like allies with wide open arms to welcome them.

What's next?  And what won't Congress do about it yet again?

jon,

Submitted by Agnostic on Fri, 07/01/2011 - 12:28pm.

In these things especially Congress is entirely powerless even if they actually had the numbers to do something. This is department driven and answerable only to the administration in charge.

As long as the Democrats control the Senate and we have a liberal supportive media there will be nothing that can make the administration answer for these types of policies. That is one of many reasons that voting is so important.

Maybe so

Submitted by jon_torlin on Fri, 07/01/2011 - 12:33pm.

But the Senate votes to approve of the department heads, don't they have the power to vote them out?  I find it hard to believe that except for the hard-liners like Schumer and Durbin that the other senators would be party to allowing communications with such a group, even if the Dems control it.

jon,

Once approved the heads of the departments are there until they step down, removed by executive or until the end of their term. Even if you have someone good at the top of the department they still take their orders from the Executive Branch. Funding is the only way and that is far from cut an dry because it is an established line item and not a special funding.
