Open Thread: GOP 2012 Roundup

By NB Staff | May 23, 2011 | 09:48

A  A

With official announcements from Herman Cain on Saturday and Tim Pawlenty this morning, and news of Sarah Palin buying a new house surmised to be potential campaign headquarters in Arizona, do you think a GOP frontrunner will emerge from the pool of candidates any time soon?

Check out a roundup of this weekend's GOP announcements and speculation below, and give us your thoughts in the comments:

And as reported by Newsmax yesterday,

Confirmation of a Palin house purchase in Scottsdale likely would rekindle chatter about whether Palin might run a political campaign out of Arizona, the home state of U.S. Sen. John McCain, who plucked her from relative political obscurity in 2008 to be his vice-presidential running mate, the Republic speculated Sunday.

Palin has been rumored to be considering headquartering her 2012 White House campaign, if there is one, in Scottsdale. She also has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz.

Perhaps even more important than the viability of any one candidate is whether the current field is a suitable one. For all the handwringing about the absence of a so-called "savior" candidate, prominent right-of-center bloggers such as Erick Erickson and Glenn Reynolds have pushed the "go to the races with the horses we've got" approach. Where do you stand on that question?

Herman Cain is not a viable candidate nor right for the party

Submitted by lrgon on Mon, 05/23/2011 - 10:46am.

His support for Tarp(Toxic assets Relief Program. In short a welfare check for bankers) is one big indication that he "doesn't get" the Tea Party message: bailouts of bankers and their banks is not what Americans want.

Those of us who have watched Allen West, see Ronald Reagan, reincarnated.

None of the declared candidates are capable of exuding such a sense of courage, resolve, and forthrightness as Allen West.

Of course we have a problem with the class of candidates!  We've seen brilliance and he's not running.

By now, he's got to know how much his country needs him.

Maybe it's wishful thinking, but I don't see how we can let him sit out this election.  I'm mildly impressed with Cain Bachmann, and less so with Pawlenty, but we can do better than that.

The moonbat in the video is the same moonbat who got thrown out of last month's Town Hall.

If the Republicans run with the same old same old, i.e., an old white Washington insider, Obama wins.
Palin, I like her and think she is 10 times better than Obama, but she is too divisive, the MSM will destroy her with lies and distortions.
The Democrats, and their toadies in the MSM, will play the race card if the Republicans pick a white guy or gal.

"The Democrats, and their toadies in the MSM, will play the race card if the Republicans pick a white guy or gal."

So, basically you're saying we should cave in to the race baiting, and let the dems pick our candidates for us. If that's the idea, they've already won, no matter who wins the election. Maybe while we're at it, we can stop calling for low taxes, and become pro-abortion...you know, so the media and the dems will talk nice about us.

No thank you.

video of him drinking guinness

Submitted by jon_torlin on Mon, 05/23/2011 - 11:04am.

I just saw the Chairman in a video on Fox News where they show him at an Irish pub.  He appears to be drinking a pint of Guinness.  Some would say that if he were really a Muslim, he wouldn't be touching alcohol.  Well, guess what......

I'm one of those people that know how to read lips.  He had asked if there was no alcohol in it.  Here's a direct quote "There's no alcohol in it, right?  Ok, good."  And he didn't drink the whole thing, just took a sip and handed it back.  Might have been Kaliber or some non-alcoholic brand.

You be the judge.

Reagan was not Reagan until

Submitted by MidAmerica on Mon, 05/23/2011 - 11:25am.

Reagan was not Reagan until later in the campaign. He still had challengers and Republicans who opposed to him early on.  So we can't be too (nor should we be) judgmental about the candidates we have before the campaigning even begins.

After all why do we talk about the candidates we have are weak?  Because too many of us have bought into the media spin.

Our candidate becomes strong when we get behind them and support them.

Our eventual candidate is weakened when voices from our side trash talk opposing candidates thinking they are supporting their preferred candidate this way.

Sarah Palin house purchase

Submitted by jon_torlin on Mon, 05/23/2011 - 11:49am.

I would expect the MSM to start harping about Sarah Palin buying the house in Scottsdale and start calling her carpet bagger and etc.

I suppose it might be true if she were to actually run except that she's not running for a senate position like Shrillary did.  She's not running for anything yet.

And if she were running, she'd be running for leadership of the country.  Cheney had to move his residence to Wyoming when he did VP for Bush.

Maybe she's just buying a winter home

Submitted by Blonde on Mon, 05/23/2011 - 12:00pm.

Like a million other snowbirds do. Bristol just bought a house in Phoenix, so why not Sarah & Todd Palin, too?

Scottsdale is very nice, and bargains abound in the housing market.

Doesn't need to for President

Submitted by c5then on Mon, 05/23/2011 - 12:03pm.

The only reason she would need to purchase a house in Arizona was if she was planning to run for Senate there. She can put her HQ for President anywhere.

And doncha know, Gerald O'Hara came from the same town Obama's visiting, where he drank the fake Guiness.

At least Prince Phillip had the good sense to just look at the Guiness longlingly and not drink any, instead of faking it, when he and The Queen visited Ireland last week.

And The Queen wore green, as a gesture of goodwill. Moochelle, of course, wore a dress inspired by the PLO. And she was having a bad hair day, as well.  And what's up with the fake eyelashes?  And was she wearing her pj's as she left the WH last night (last photo).  These are the questions the fashion police have.
