Open Thread: Almost a Fifth of New Obamacare Waivers Go to Pelosi's District

By NB Staff | May 17, 2011 | 10:03

A  A

And not just any businesses in the House Minority Leader's wealthy San Francisco district either. Nearly 20 percent of the 204 Obamacare waivers granted last month went to "fancy eateries, hip nightclubs and decadent hotels" in that district, according to the Daily Caller. Check below the break for more details.

Of the 204 new Obamacare waivers President Barack Obama’s administration approved in April, 38 are for fancy eateries, hip nightclubs and decadent hotels in House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s Northern California district.

That’s in addition to the 27 new waivers for health care or drug companies and the 31 new union waivers Obama’s Department of Health and Human Services approved.

Pelosi’s district secured almost 20 percent of the latest issuance of waivers nationwide, and the companies that won them didn’t have much in common with companies throughout the rest of the country that have received Obamacare waivers.

Other common waiver recipients were labor union chapters, large corporations, financial firms and local governments. But Pelosi’s district’s waivers are the first major examples of luxurious, gourmet restaurants and hotels getting a year-long pass from Obamacare.

Thoughts?

I hope he blasts her and the Obamacrap out of the park so it will at least make Fox News.  He needs to establish his credentials as a racist, after all!!  At the same time he can be branded a sexist and a homophobe!

Allen West's Town Hall

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 05/17/2011 - 3:36pm.

He was awesome!

He's not running this time around people. Get over that. (Although I still suspect he may accept the #2, and no, he wasn't asked and didn't imply that, that's just me). He said he isn't going to endorse anyone this early (very classy).

The "organized" Move.On protest consisted of about 8 loons in red shirts. A couple were noisy and rude, one got tossed by the cops.

Here's a picture, can't wait for the next one.

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 05/17/2011 - 5:13pm.

He mentioned it today, too. He's not as tall as he looks on TV, but you can tell he works out, constantly.

He has an excellent grasp of facts and figures, didn't have a notcard, nor even a podium. Did I mention the man who sang the National Anthem, a capella, was by far better than most you'll hear at professional events. I had tears in my eyes, he was so fabulous.

He's even more impressive in person, gracious, and has a natural charm and the leadership just flows out of him. At one point the crowd was getting really annoyed at the hecklers, and he'd had enough so he said "At Ease", which was funny and diffused the situation. (The cops tossed this idiot a bit later, and the Secret Service had eyes on, and then sat down next to her).

What is happening in Libya?

Submitted by ricklail on Tue, 05/17/2011 - 1:50pm.

The son in law returned from Yuma on Sunday and was told their squadron of EA-6 Prowlers would be going to support the NATO operations in Libya in July. They were supposed to being going to Afganistan in October. I assume they will be based in Avaino, Italy. Their pilots have trained there before. In 1998 a Prowler flying too low clipped the cable on a ski lift killing 20 people while returning to Aviano from a training mission.  By the way my son in law's CO was in that plane and is not allowed to return to Italy.

I'm betting that he takes a pass on this since it seems to fit in with his plan of letting the crazies of the world win so we can be "put in our place."

And the Mexican Federales are

Submitted by Beukeboom on Tue, 05/17/2011 - 12:38pm.

And the Mexican Federales are losing (arguably lost) the battle against the drug cartels and possible in some instances actually aiding them. It's been reported that local law enforcement in areas of Mexico known for violent drug cartels are in the back pockets of the cartels and the ones refusing to cooperate are targeted for death. The Mexican government has done little to curb the growth of these cartels in the past. Now they claim they are stepping up their fight (not a trustworthy claim) against the cartels but it's probably too little, too late. The violence is now creeping into the major Mexican tourist areas where it once was relatively safe. Pretty soon, since neither governments are really doing what needs to be done, Mexico will probably end up being declared a "no-go" zone.

The Mexican Government is trying

Submitted by Blonde on Tue, 05/17/2011 - 3:45pm.

But you are correct, the Federales aren't helping, in fact, many of them are "in" on it.

The Mexican Army, and more importantly, the Mexican Marines, regularly take on the Drug gangs. The Marines never lose. If you hear about a big "shoot em up", it will typically be the Marines, killing the drug gangs. The problem is, the Drug Gangs pay the ex-soldiers, and the pay is good. They estimate there's at least one hundred special forces trained personnel on the side of the bad guys, doing their training, etc.

And now, the Drug Gangs have turned to terrorist tactics. I think WE need to work WITH the Mexican Government on this. Provide them support (AWACS) and coordinate efforts. These gangs are now going cross border into Guatemala with their terrorist tactics. Putting them on the offical terrorist watch list is a start, but it needs to be done with the cooperation of the Mexican government. I'm not sure the gangs will come here like they have in Guatemala, guns blazing, but we MUST stop the flow of the drugs.

Allen West mentioned this today, but there are not enough of our Critters who care about this. We need to bring the pressure to bear on this issue, and tie it into illegal immigration. No rest for the weary, people.

As Allen West said earlier this year, the election of 2010 was a shaping action, preparing the battlefield. The big war commences with the primaries.

War in Mexico.

Submitted by Newsbubba on Tue, 05/17/2011 - 12:42pm.

But, never fear.  El Bambi has it under control.

Submitted by ricklail on Tue, 05/17/2011 - 1:39pm.

There were  3111 murders in Juarez last year. So far this year they are on a pace to have over 5000. Feb 2011 was up to 229 from 163 last Feb a 40% increase.  This in a city of about 1.5 million. It is now the murder capital of the world.

Contrast this with El Paso that had 1 murder in 2010. That was a murder-suicide.

waivers

Submitted by alvin on Tue, 05/17/2011 - 11:57pm.

Once again the right wing gets it wrong - implying Pelosi asked for special treatment:
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) played no role in the process by which health care waivers were granted to a number of businesses in her district, according to the company that actually requested the waivers on behalf of its clients.
Flex-Plan Services, a third-party benefits administrator based in Bellevue, Wash., made the formal applications for waivers from President Barack Obama's health care law, said its founder, Hilarie Aitken.
"I don’t tend to vote Democratic, but I feel bad for Nancy Pelosi," Aitken said.
