Open Thread: NYC Union Delays Snow Removal Deliberately
Today's starter topic: Sanitation workers in New York City deliberately slowed down snow removal operations there in protest of cuts made to their budgets:
Miles of roads stretching from as north as Whitestone, Queens, to the south shore of Staten Island still remained treacherously unplowed last night because of the shameless job action, several sources and a city lawmaker said, which was over a raft of demotions, attrition and budget cuts.
Selfish Sanitation Department bosses from the snow-slammed outer boroughs ordered their drivers to snarl the blizzard cleanup to protest budget cuts -- a disastrous move that turned streets into a minefield for emergency-services vehicles, The Post has learned.
"They sent a message to the rest of the city that these particular labor issues are more important," said City Councilman Dan Halloran (R-Queens), who was visited yesterday by a group of guilt-ridden sanitation workers who confessed the shameless plot.
Halloran said he met with three plow workers from the Sanitation Department -- and two Department of Transportation supervisors who were on loan -- at his office after he was flooded with irate calls from constituents.

The family of that baby who died because the ambulance couldn't get through should sue their A$$ES off.
Just because an ambulance gets there doesn’t mean you can save a person,” the mayor said when asked about the incident. “Delivery of an ambulance doesn’t guarantee that medical help can get to do what you need to have done.” -Bloomberg
Uh, maybe not, Mr. Mayor, but the ambulance not getting there pretty much guarantees that what's needed won't get done!
But, of course, the union will say that even if they were plowing full force, that's no guarantee the ambulance would have gotten there in time.
If for no other reason, make the SOB's go to court and have to defend themselves!
They won't be tried

I predict the MSM will tamp this down through lack of and biased reporting. I also suspect there will be no changes to union rule. The big city unions are much more powerful than any of the polititians -- and obama will makd damn sure no one tramples on their rights.
Just to be sure, I decided to select one MSM outlet to see what they had to say about the NYC unions. CNN. And guess what? CNN doesn't even mention the unions -- at least on their front page at CNN.com. Their only comment about the storm is here, and they only mention that Bloomberg is under fire.

The union should be forced to pay for the cleanup itself
Submitted by c5then on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 1:09pm.
That is the least that should happen. Their actions (or innaction) lead directly to the deaths and injuries of people. The union should have to pay back the city for the full costs of the cleanup and the union leadership should be tried on manslaughter charges and criminal malfeasance.

New York
Submitted by Gothampc on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 1:30pm.
As a New Yorker, I can tell you that the city is run by the union. A few years ago, the public transit system was stopped for three days because of the union. The union bosses for the transit system are smart because they keep renegoitating their contract to end a week before Christmas, knowing that that time period is the height of inconvenience.
In my opinion, New York has only itself to blame. The citizens allowed Mayor Bloomberg to run for a (illegal) third term. He is a pansy mayor that didn't even deserve a second term. When confronted with the snow removal issue, his response was "I'm angry too." But he doesn't have the right to be angry because he's the one in charge and the one that we've entrusted to get the job done.
As far as I'm concerned, New York you got what you voted for.

The folly of 'government command/control'
Submitted by Slyrr on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 1:33pm.
This of course comes as a surprise - only to liberals. Only liberals believe that unions are pure and holy. Everyone else knows that, whatever they were in their beginnings, however noble their intentions might have been, that unions are now nothing but pest-holes of graft, greed, violence, corruption, waste and criminality.
And it's the perfect illustration of the folly the idea that government can 'control' anything. Look at New York - it's the most heavily taxed state in the country. Bloom-butt and his thugs have soaked the residents of that state ruthlessly, plundering the working man's paychecks, confiscating private property, siezing possessions, money and goods. They tax everything that can be taxed. They even tax you for the taxes you pay - and before long they'll be taxing the taxes on the taxes.
And what have the citizens of NY gotten in exchange for all this taxation?
Bloom-butt, Obama and all their liberal Demorat ilk loudly boast that if people will just surrender all their money to the government, then they, the government, will use it to build a utopia. They'll make the perfect communist/hippie society where everyone will live forever in paradise on earth. They boast free health care - free houses - free cars - free food - free retirement pensions - everything, free, free, free. And that the people won't have to lift a finger to get it. You can even quit your job and live off unemployement forever. Just let the government take everything from everybody - put yourself in their hands - and they'll take care of you from 'cradle to grave'.
This blizzard, and other incidents like it, puts the burning light of truth to the lies of the liberal democrat left.
Because Bloom-butt and his thugs bought into that lie, and made the promise. They taxed everyone. And what did they do with those taxes? They set up corrupt, wasteful government offices that tell everybody when to spit and throw you in jail if you don't do exactly what Bloom-butt and his armies command you. They tell you how many calories you can have in a dessert. They set up armies to put down bake sales at schools if they try to sell cookies. They create an army of 'salt nazis' to attack restaurants if they have too many salt shakers on their tables.
They've taxed the snot out of NY to create a government gestapo to sieze control of every aspect of the lives of every man, woman, child, infant and unborn in their clutches.
But when a REAL crisis, like this blizzard, happens - they prove that all that tax money was wasted. They're helpless. They're useless. Bloom-butt is now scampering back and forth in his office, wetting himself, and blubbering, 'there's white stuff falling from the sky - what do I do? What do I do?' All the tax money he's plundered - all those billions, all the freedom and liberty he's squashed, and all it takes to turn him into mush is some snow.
When government tries to do everything, they wind up being able to do nothing. The time has come for every government official, Demorat or Republican, to fall on their knees before the American people and beg their forgiveness for their arrogance, their greed and presumption. The time has come for them to admit their failure, and to dissolve every government agency forthwith, and pare government down to only it's Constitutionally prescribed duties. All other agencies/committees/bodies must be immediately and aboslutely dismantled.
They thought they could control the galaxy if they could just tax us enough.

So will Bloomberg cave to any claim of victimhood by the unions because IF YOU DO then who's next? The Police Union? Just imagine the police being vindictive leaving the citizenry to fend for themselves during a slowdown in 911 response OR fire department slow down to fires and medical emergencies.
It should go without saying that a criminal investigation be conducted to determine what culpability they (union leaders) had in the TWO deaths that occurred. A baby and a senior citizen died as a result of the EMS delays.
Charges: Depraved Indifference? Negligent Homicide? Involuntary Manslaughter?
The relatives of the TWO people who died as a result of this gross negligence have every right to sue the Sanitation Union as they were being vindictive. After all, they've got lots of money and deep pockets since they seem to have lots of money for campaign donations. It's time to share the wealth!

Basic duties of a mayor.

It's interesting that you say that as, not too long ago, those used to be personal responsibilities and not civic responsibilities. The two main "duties" used to be fire and police protection.

Where I live, both the police and fire functions are contracted out to the county. Where of course, they stick us up for an ever increasing "share" to cover the "poorer" cities. Sweet, huh?
The problem is the government union. These employees can literally get away with murder, and unless there's a specific clause in their contract (obvious slow work), they get off scot free. As they will in this instance, the union bosses know those contracts inside and out.
Bloomie's no Reagan. He doesn't have the cajones to fire them all. It would be an interesting platform to unseat him next time around, unless that "rent is too damn high" guy starts making real inroads.

Getting away with murder is
Submitted by dscott on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 3:47pm.
Getting away with murder is the real issue here. IF the NYC prosecutor or the NY Attorney General can't get their act together to launch an investigation and find enough to charge the union bosses with contributing to the deaths of at least two people then YES, union activity has become a license for MURDER. The fault of which rests squarely on the pols who enabled these thugs through past behavior to actually think that such tactics would work.
We shouldn't be surprised though that those charged with enforcement of the law are foot dragging since they set the precident for it when they refused to hold the union thugs accountable for beating up the black vendor at an ObamaCare event. Yes, it this incident was in a different state, however, we have seen a pattern emerging where union sponsored violence is unchallenged by the authorities in general.
By my estimate, we have conspiracy to commit extortion (maintain union wages and positions) of at least 6,000+ counts via a protection racket of NOT engaging in slow downs; we have contributory negligence of at least two deaths; we have Enterprise Corruption of the Union itself in that union officials via sanitation supervisors conspired to extort funds from NYC. That merits a RICCO case.

Which one is the real criminal, here?
Submitted by ThisnThat on Thu, 12/30/2010 - 2:43pm.
Candidate #1: In Massachusetts, a man serving 3 concurrent life terms for a series of armed robberies, and with a history of violence, is released on parole because he told the parole board "he regretted robbing people to feed his heroin addiction and that he was new and different". He shot and killed a police officer last week.
Candidate #2: A standout North Carolina high school student is suspended for the remainder of her senior year and charged with a misdemeanor for having a small paring knife in her lunchbox. It was actually her father's lunchbox which she took to school by mistake.
In the first case, the typical liberal thinks that the criminal has been mis-understood all his life, and people have been mean to him, and he therefore deserves a second chance. It's also convenient to bend the rules here in support of the proven criminal. In the second case, this is an opportunity for the typical liberal to punish someone for being successful and trying to become someone. This is a chance to stand behind the stupid and totally wrong rigid rules, cut her down to size early in her life, and if her life is ruined enough, she would become dependent upon liberals for her care and keep, thereby garnering sympathy if she would just sink low enough.
In both cases, it's convenient for the liberal to completely ignore the facts, just so they can show everyone who's really the boss.

Why is the school board holding an emergency meeting tomorrow nigh?. They say the reason they checked her lunch box was she was caught with the wacky weed. Sounds like your typical educrat CYA. Why does she have a court date on the weapon charge? That infomation is right off the NC court calendar for Lee County. Notice no charge for possesion. The only way she gets charged is through the school. This superindent is flat lying.

The only team they played with a winning record was a 6-6 kentucky. The combine record of all 4 teams was 13-35. The only other games they won against UAB and Tenn-Martin. Hmmmm....let me see, your Vols are on a six game losing streak to my Gators (couldn't even beat this Gator team, admittedly the worse team fielded in at least 20 years, at your place)....and you want to trash talk?
Pardon me, Jer. Will Muschamp turned down the Vols $3 million a year offer, one year ago, in about a nanosecond. And accepted an offer from UF, at a half a million less, in half that time. The only reason you haven't heard the rest of our coaching line up yet is so as not to upset the bowls....ours and others. No worries there.
The cherry on the top is that Florida is loaded with talent. Those ESPN idiots last night were carrying on about TN's "young" team. Here's a clue for you. Florida played 43 underclassmen this year. We are loaded with young talent. We've had top recruiting classes for the last five years. Volunteer recruiting has been subpar for a while, but after Lame Kitten raped and pillaged your program last year, you'll be lucky to get a top 25 class for the forseeable future, much less a top 5 like Florida has had for quite a while now.
So please, continue with the Volunteer whine of "wait until next year".
I guarantee if Stick Boy pulls that throat slash crap in the Swamp, my guys are going to break him in half just for the fun of it.
P.S. It's hardly the referees' fault that Tennessee's DC can't count. Too many men on the field is too many men on the field. LSU's was way funnier, because of Mad Miles' clock screw up (yet again). But I love the fact that Vol fans keep whining about "we wuz robbed".
Jer, just chalk it up as another Moral Victory, a la Lame, and move on.
P.S.S. It's not actually my hatred of the Vols, or actually some of their individual fans....but it's Voldom in general, their obnoxious and stupid fanbase (I understand it was quite ugly last night after the game in TN).

Too funny.
I have to admit, I used to be creeped out by cats. I grew up with dogs. However, when I was forced against my will to take in a kitten (a fluffy, very cute orange-colored kitten with lots of pretty white markings), I pretty much raised him like a puppy. He's still a cat, of course; but he's just been trained differently.
Anyway, he's super smart, happy, content and adorable...and I can't believe how much I like the little guy. So the trick is for the kitten to look more like a puppy and to raise the cat like a dog. It works out great!
Yeah, this is hardly worth anyone reading. Sorry. Back to the Dawgs...

Rumor now has it that we're going to have an NFL guy as OC....Charlie Weis, who's ressurected the KC Chiefs offense this year.
That ought to be interesting. Boom Muschamp is a D guy, and promised to bring in some NFL types. Think of the offensive recruiting we'll be able to do.
Wow!

Monty was such an oustanding DC and really just a nice, loyal and ethical man here in Tampa Bay. It is hard to imagine that Lane and he are even related. Monty will go down in the NFL history books as the architect of one of the great defensive dynasties in the NFL and the creator of the Tampa 2. Lane's legacy is looking pretty disgusting right about now.
I was really hoping that Monty would finally decide to give head coaching a shot and step in when Lane left Tennessee. Don't know if he would do well but it would have been worth seeing. Besides, his speaking style and connections in Florida would get a lot of those southern boys to sign with Tennessee and Tennesse could really use some of the speed that comes out of Florida.

Army Football Practice for Army/Navy Game Delayed
West Point (NY) -- Army football practice was delayed nearly two hours yesterday after a player reported finding an unknown powdery white substance on the practice field. New head coach, John Mumford, immediately suspended practice while police and federal investigators were called to investigate.
After a complete analysis by both the FBI and Army Intelligence, forensic experts determined the powdery white substance unknown to players was the goal line.
Practice was resumed after special agents decided the team was unlikely to encounter the substance again.

Former 'Car Czar' Rattner Agrees To Pay $10M To State Of New York"Steven Rattner, who served as the Obama administration's "car czar," will pay "$10 million in restitution to the State of New York and be banned from appearing in any capacity before any public pension fund within the State of New York for five years," the office of New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo just announced.
As NPR's Jim Zarroli reported in October, Rattner had been accused of paying an associate of New York's state comptroller to steer state pension fund business toward his (Rattner's) private equity firm. Rattner previously agreed to pay $6.2 million to settle federal charges over the "pay-to-play" scandal."

Unbelievable New Years Eve here.
Went snowboarding today and they closed down the slopes about 1pm. There was an avalanche and 4 people were killed. Worst snow storm I have ever seen here in over 4 years. When I got home there was 18 inches of new snow on the ground. In an area that snow only sticks to the ground a few times in Jan and Feb.
I have never seen more than 5 inches on the ground here, but we will probably have over 2 feet by the end of tomorrow.
Anyway, Happy New Year!!

This state consistently produces some of the best football talent in America. I know many of them wind up playing in Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee, but still, with the calibur of the players we had this year, we should have won ten games.
