Open Thread: Olbermann Continues Losing Viewers

By NB Staff | December 29, 2010 | 12:24

A  A

Today's starter topic: Left-wing MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann's ratings continue to drop:

The bad news keeps coming for MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann. The 2010 ratings data is starting to trickle in, and the news is not so great for the Countdown host. In a down year for cable news where all three networks registered a decline in viewers, Keith Olbermann lost 11% of his total audience, but what is most troubling is that among the coveted age 25-54 demographic Olbermann lost 25% of his audience. [...]

Keith Olbermann’s total drop in viewership was 2% higher than MSNBC’s network average, (11% vs 9%). In contrast, Rachel Maddow lost less of her audience than MSNBC as a whole. Maddow only declined by 6% compared to the network’s 11%. Maddow’s total loss was almost half of her lead in Olbermann, (6% compared to 11%). Olbermann also lost a higher than network percentage of those viewers age 25-54. MSNBC lost 18%. Olbermann lost 25%. Maddow only lost 14%.

What will happen? (Multiple choice)

Submitted by Slyrr on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 12:41pm.

a) Olby will wring his hands on the air, wailing and moaning about 'the loss of civil discourse' in cable news ratings (and then start swearing and cursing at conservatives).

b) Olby will blame Bush/Limbaugh et. al for the decline, and accuse them of 'hate speech'.

c) Demand that the fairness doctrine be reinstated so people will be forced to watch his show at the point of a government bayonet.

d) Assemble another panel of liberal-only guests and all of them will take turns swearing and cursing at conservatives.

e) Take a bath.

f) Blame God.

g) All of the above.

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

Good News. . . Bad News

Submitted by JustAl on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 12:41pm.

Good news: Liberals have a very, very short attention span, so they drift in and out of public discourse etc.

Bad news: Since liberals have a very short attention span, they think everyone does, so we hear the same BS time after time.  Every six months it's "US Guns Fuel MX Violence" and "Global Warming is Real".

Olbermann losing viewers is not surprising

Submitted by shawn. on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 1:00pm.

To me what is surprising is Fox News also lost viewers and the shocker is 70 percent of their audience is over 54. I wonder what the median age of a FOX viewer is

5% drop

Submitted by jon_torlin on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 1:28pm.

It's a 5% drop in viewership for Fox News which isn't much considering they have quite the number of viewers.  Plus, 2010 has been a particularly difficult year with people losing jobs, the myriad of disasters occurring, as well as the constant political BS coming from Washington.  I even cut back on how much I watch Fox News, it's just depressing to watch the news these days.

Hi Jon

I think the reason I was surprised is because this was an election year. I also though the majority of FOX viewers would be younger by more than a decade.

I'll tell you why Fox lost viewers

Submitted by jlfonz on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 8:34pm.

I can tell you because I am one they lost (not completly--but they lost me)

It's because they are putting on more and more liberal mouth pieces that shout over their counter-parts and the host does little or nothing to stop it--by the time they get a word in to stop the ignorant tirade--I've all ready turned the channel.  I'm also tired of both liberal politicians and so-called pundits blatantly lying and not a single person calling them out on it.  I don't mind listening to subjective debate at all--but as soon as one of them makes a completly intentional false statement---I turn the channel--and when I do that--I don't go back

MS-NBC needs to advertize

Submitted by Russian55 on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 1:59pm.

MS-NBC needs to do what CNN has done:  Advertize on FOX NEWS.

Apparently, CNN at least knows where the viewers are, they have been running ads on Fox News for some time now.  I don't think it is gaining them a lot of ground, but the fact is that they at least know who IS attracting viewers.

In the case of Olberman,. maybe her needs to put ads on Comedy Central, as the Daily Show is more his speed, but at least it is supposed to be made up and funny, whereas Keith makes stuff up and isn't funny.

Well, maybe he IS funny, but that's not what he was shooting for...

It won't be long now before

Submitted by Barack_must_go..... on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 2:14pm.

It won't be long now before MSNBC replaces  " Lean Forward " with " Bent Over ".

The only audience they seem to not be losing as quickly is the gays, so bent over is fitting in more ways than one.

They even had a special deal set up with N.Y. mayor Michelle Bloomberg whereby all homeless shelters were forced to tune into Olbermann's " Down For The Count " program in a last ditch effort to falsely raise viewership.

Funny thing though, the shelter residence made a mass exodus on the very first night.

When some where located, back under overpasses or sleeping on subway grates, they all said they would rather risk their lives out in the fridged cold than be forced to watch that asshole.

2011 is shaping up to be " The Year of Obama ".

The year Obama is exposed as not being an American citizen, Obama's bilking America out of billions in " jobs created or saved " scam, illegally breaking up the automakers and giving them to his union cronies, the year it is uncovered Barack was behind the Wikileak scandal, afterall he eagerly agreed to an interview with Rolling Stone even knowing about the damage to America their McCrystal interview was about to cause, then by years end, Rep. Issa will have exposed enough collusion/ corruption between the Ass Clown and the Holder Justice Department in distorting the Constitution and the truth, his impeachment trial for HIGH crimes against America will round out the year with a bang.

VATMAN & Robbing - The Dark Fright!

Submitted by Jack Bauer on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 3:04pm.

My fellow conservatives -- just thought you would like to know in the UK next week, VALUE ADDED TAX (the national sales tax on all goods and services) is going up to 20%!!

Are you looking forward to this great new tax starting in the US too? You knw they want it. Congress that is.

It began in the UK at 5% -- but thanks to progress we've now managed to reach 20%

For all you liberals who failed basic arithmetic, this progressives tax means in the US if you paid $100 for something -- the state would add another $20 costing you $120.

Nice huh? Every week is Christmas for tax loving liberals.

PMSNBC ratings

Submitted by sarge329 on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 3:36pm.

I don't know why anyone would be surprised at their ratings crash. I don't watch PMSNBC ( or Fox ) , but then, I don't know anyone who admits to watching PMSNBC. It doesn't help that their stock-in-trade is bad news, followed by worse news, and concluded with the worst news. When things are as bad as they are, few people want to be bombarded hour after hour with bad news. Not to mention the fact that, as far as they're concerned, EVERYTHING is W's fault, even though he was voted out of office in 2008 because BHO lied to the voting public. It's either W's fault, or all conservatives are narrow-minded racist/sexist/bigot/homophobes. It could be Sarah Palin's fault, or the Tea Party, or Karl Rove, or... well, you get the point. It makes as much sense as NYC's new " bagel tax " .

Submitted by jon_torlin on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 3:50pm.

W wasn't voted out of office in 2008, he was at the end of his second term.  Only way a president can be voted out is by not electing him for the second term, which is the thing many people are hoping for with the Chairman.  I'm still waiting for him to get impeached as if that'll ever happen.

What went wrong?

Submitted by Scottyb4292 on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 4:43pm.

How could this be? After all, Obly was stridently anti-Bush. We all know how evil Bush was, right? And here we had a guy who was laying in all on the line to point out how Bush was a fascist. Few others were laying that truth out there like Olby. So how could be be unjustly punished like this after speaking truth to power for so long?

It's not fair.

Why does MSNBC have a Private Sector Sponsor?

Submitted by Avitar on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 5:49pm.

I also do not think that the management will improve any with Comcast in charge.  I have spent ten years watching Comcast New England News and they are as ignorant as Obama's Father was.  (He nearly bankrupted Kenya.)

We have no shortage of good solutions Obama and the 111th congress just avoids them but we do have a complete shortage of Media people with any knowledge.

Rules for hiring new Media people:

1) BS degrees no BA degrees

2) Manufacturing or Agricultural backgrounds, Sales in a pinch no finance, communication or law backgrounds.  I know that there are some outstanding people who come out of those backgrounds but as a general they have been bad.

3)  No Ivey league graduates.  For some reason the real world does not circulate on those campuses.  Absolutely brilliant men come out of Brown University as ignorant as a spear chucking jungle dweller.  After they leave the campus they have four years that they have to catch up and that takes ten years.  That is the only ones I know.

4) Hire a Science Fiction writer for the staff.  You may not be able to afford a Gordon Moore but every news organization needs someone who can look in to the future.

Some Liberty Returns To Ohio

Submitted by stratman on Wed, 12/29/2010 - 11:03pm.

A good day for Ohio.

Ohio Supreme Court crushes the city of Cleveland"s oppressive anti-gun laws.  In a 5-2 decision, the Ohio SC states city gun laws can not exceed federal/state laws.  Chief Justice Eric Browm (Democrat - interim appointee through 12/31/2010) and Justice Paul E. Pfeifer (RINO - mandatory retirement 2012) were the opposing minority votes.

I am affected by this ruling since my city, which joined with Cleveland in the fight, has the second most restrictive laws (nearly identical) compared to Cleveland in the area.  Obviously, my city also spent taxpayer money trying to continue their oppressive gun laws as well.

I had spoken with my city's legal department shortly after the case went to the Ohio SC..  The attorney stated that if Cleveland lost they would change their laws.  I wonder how long until they do and everyone - city hall and the police department - complies.
