Open Thread: 'Teachers Unions Gone Wild'
By NB Staff | October 25, 2010 | 08:10
Self-styled "investigative journalist" James O'Keefe has released his latest undercover project. He took a hidden camera into a meeting of the New Jersey Education Association, and heard some pretty astounding things. Check out the video below the fold (WARNING: explicit and vulgar content).

Home School...

Anyone who thinks their kids can get an unbiased education that doesn't lean to the left is fooling themselves.
Americans need to wake up and take their kids out of this failing "indoctrination" system.

teacher's unions
Submitted by Huapakechi on Mon, 10/25/2010 - 8:46am.
Anyone that has dealt with the "publik eddkashun" system will recognize the atitudes of these people who are supposedly teaching our children. They are like any other union in that they can not tolerate the exceptional among their ranks simply because it casts light on the mediocre to pitiful job performance of the majority.
HOME SCHOOL!

The administration that just keeps on giving. That SOB did more long term harm to this country than every foreighn enemy we've had.
If we can't outlaw unions, then at least make it illegal for people with college degrees to belong to them, this isn' t, "labor".

We know this has been going on for years, it's not the first time we've seen these junkets and it won't be the last, however what we need is more investigative reporting like James O'Keefe does !! It seems Jounralist of today have forgot or were never trained or even know what investigative reporting is today and it has become a lost art hopefully Christie will find a way to really bust these Unions and it will spread like wild fire back to the Left Coast to rid our schools of such useless idiots who call themselves teachers !!!
Teachers need more what?

There used to be teachers who were concerned with educating -- now? Not so much. Just another union job.
Thanks teachers. You are now the problem.

Submitted by Texasteacher on Mon, 10/25/2010 - 9:38am.
Hey now, there's some of us teachers out there that aren't left wing wackos. Of course, I'm not part of any teacher organization either (except our state music organization, and I have to be part of that one to enter students in all-state contest). I hate it how these organizations make some of us look bad. I do not interject my personal beliefs on anyone. I'm there to teach a subject and it's not politics. Just remember there are teachers out there trying to help their students become productive citizens and not mindless liberal lemmings.

My late wife was a teacher and wasn't a liberal wacko either. Unfortunately, judging from the teachers I've met , you are in the minority. The wackos are a dime a dozen.
Thank you, your work is not in vain.

Maybe it's a Texas thing ;) My children have excellent public school teachers, which means I don't have to homeschool them or send them to a private school.

We know that most teachers are dedicated individuals who are light-years removed from the attitudes of the "upper echelon" of union leaders, and you are appreciated.

I've always said that anybody who leaves the education of their children up to the public schools is a fool. Our kids are in a pretty good public school system, but I'm not relying on that system to teach my kids what's important.
Yes, it takes a lot of time, but we sit with our kids almost daily to work with them on their homework and to see what's being taught. It's pretty easy to counter some of the liberal viewpoints if you take them on one at a time instead of trying to fix your child's mind at graduation.

DC schools now serving the third meal of the day.
Submitted by motherbelt on Mon, 10/25/2010 - 9:55am.
More on the "education" front: In Washington, DC, some schools are now serving supper as well as breakfast and lunch.
DC Students Receive Dinner at School.
And another big benefit of the after school dinners are that more kids are enrolling in after school programs where they can get some academic help as well.
So the dinners are really serving three purposes - fighting hunger, obesity and offering help with classwork too.
Watch the video. Do you see any kids in a classroom setting getting help with classwork???
The things I heard mentioned were step-dancing, hula-hooping and sign language.
Now, if they really had oodles of kids in the classroom-help program, wouldn't you think they would show them instead?
My experience with education reform
Submitted by ricklail on Mon, 10/25/2010 - 11:31am.
I don’t want to get too wound up on this. Back in the early 90’s the Rand Corporation fund a group called the New American Schools Development Association. NASDA gave out grants for “innovative” school projects. Gaston County, NC, where I was lived at the time, was awarded one of those grants with several million dollars. When they presented their concept to the public many of us got very suspicious. We formed a group to research the project entitled Odyssey. We then held meetings to inform the public. It involved the elementary, middle and high school my kids attended. We learned a lot about education reform like Outcome Based Education. We made up fliers that had OBE-Our Brains are Empty on them and passed them out. We got the project stopped after many months. We got it stopped because we found that the money was being squandered on things like gourmet ice machines and big fancy desk. NASDA pulled their funding.
To get to the point. In the program it would take kids from birth, they called them Alphas, and start their education all the way through college. UNC-Wilmington would be gearing up to further indoctrination them in college. UNCW would also be the only school in the state that would be allowed to train the teachers. Feeding the kids 3 meals a day was part of that program so it is not new. Also the schools would be using the children of students as the Alphas. In addition to all that there would be school based health clinics that would treat students for things like STDs, pregnancy (abortions) and mental health problems without the parent’s knowledge. At that time state law allowed it. (We were instrumental in getting that law changed.)
Guess who was one of the biggest supporters of this stuff. The NEA and their little piglet organization the NCAE, North Carolina Association of Educators.
Anyhow to wind it up. Our little group educated a lot of people on the teachers unions, the PTA and all the organization that were pushing crap like taking over for the parents. Three of our members got elected to the school board. I ran but I didn’t get elected. I was considered too extreme.
Sorry for rambling but I get pissed ever time I think about what the educrats tried to pull.
Obesity?
Submitted by SouthernRoots on Mon, 10/25/2010 - 11:30am.
1. Parents can't afford to feed their children.
2. Children need school meal programs because they wouild starve otherwise.
3. Two meals a day were being served at school.
4. A third meal is being offered.
Under the assumptions of #1-3, how can many kids be obese? If the kids are obese, then there is something wrong with the assumptions for #1-3.
How can kids have two meals a day at school and not have enough family income for food at home become obese?
Money down the into the money pit.

As usual with government, the real agenda behind this is control. They are now in effect, the parent, of those children. And what do the parents think? I'm a sure a good many of them are grateful to have someone else pick up the slack so they don't have to.

Christie's name to a teacher or spouse - they will go ballistic! There's a reason that the school budgets are voted off the regular election cycle - they would NEVER pass - but let's not forget the cities who let these contracts go through - unions, bad teachers, bad/corrupt "elected" officials - and we wonder why the country is in the shape it's in?
Example: work with a 20 something - history major - asks me, the old guy, what was the Bay of Pigs? (after I made a reference to it in a conversation) - I asked, then slighly amused, who fought in the War Between the States, and, do you believe that we (the USA) put men on the moon?? What kind of history is being taught, that I would even consider asking these questions? Nice job teachers!

The Left has had absolute power over the education system since the 1950s. This is not a surprise.

Why are we feeding children three meals a day at school? What happened to gathering the family at supper time to discuss and share the day's activities. I realize that in our hectic world and single parent situations this is not always possible but to take it completely away????? It's all about control. The insidious buildup to socialism by usurping parental influence.

Submitted by ginagwen7 on Mon, 10/25/2010 - 12:27pm.
Stop taking "public assistance" from govenment to babysit and educate your kids while you work to pay for a big house and nice clothes,to me it is no different from taking tax money for food stamps or housing assistance. Parents need to step up and take responsibility for the education of their children as well as feeding and clothing them. At one time when the schools were controlled on a local level, one might be able to feel safe delegating that responsibility to their community, but ALL government schools are federally controlled now--If you want the best for your kids GET THEM OUT!!!

Senator Candidate Joe Miller (Alaska)
Submitted by Tim the Enchanter on Mon, 10/25/2010 - 12:49pm.
Just read an article over at Free Republic. It seems that a judge appointed by Frank Murkowski (former governor of Alaska, and father to "Sore Loser Lisa" ) Issued some kind of order to Joe Miller to release some documents in his posession; said documents may hurt his campaign. Anyone know anything else about this? Sounds like political payback.

He said Republicans had driven the economy into a ditch and then stood by and criticized while Democrats pulled it out. Now that progress has been made, he said, "we can't have special interests sitting shotgun. We gotta have middle class families up in front. We don't mind the Republicans joining us. They can come for the ride, but they gotta sit in back."
None other than our Racist-in-Chief. I only wish this divider were on the ballot next week, we'd be rid of him sooner. And seriously, does he expect cooperation after saying things like that? As far as I'm concerned he can crawl under that bus of his, along with the rest of the people he's discarded.

Whether we like it or not his is how things are in the current education system, unhappy teachers lead to unhappy students and this leads to failures in the system, this a tested formula. I am strongly considering private forms of education, I fact I am about to apply for a rn to bsn online, this is my best option at the moment.
