For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Democrats who politicized the Afghan war are reaping the consequences.
...with Democrats in charge of the entire U.S. government and George Bush nowhere to be found, Pelosi and others in her party are suddenly very, very worried about U.S. escalation in Afghanistan. “There is serious unrest in our caucus,” the speaker said recently. There is so much unrest that Democrats who show little concern about the tripling of already-large budget deficits say they’re worried about the rising cost of the war.It is in that atmosphere that Obama makes his West Point speech. He had to make certain promises to get elected. Unlike some of his supporters, he has to remember those promises now that he is in office. So he is sending more troops. But he still can’t tell the truth about so many Democratic pledges to support the war in Afghanistan: They didn’t mean it.
Will the dithering Dems see the war effort through?

I will also be curious
Tue, 12/01/2009 - 09:50 ET by MidAmericaI will also be curious as to how obama refers to the Taliban. Will he reach out to them for a solution or will he critisize them for being evil as he has said of doctors, capitalists and FOX News?

Tue, 12/01/2009 - 11:19 ET by slickwillie2001There's already some thinly-reported news out there that the Bamster's team has been in negotiations with the Taliban, perhaps willing to cede several provinces of Afghanistan in exchange for a cessation of hostilities.

c5, I think it's "all of
Tue, 12/01/2009 - 10:24 ET by motherbeltc5, I think it's "all of the above."
Stuart Varney said of Obama ( I think it's in Brad Wilmouth's blog; he was talking to Hannity and Dana Perino):
Look, is the president's heart in victory? Is his heart in winning?
Why is he prosecuting CIA people? Criminally prosecuting -- when they
kept us safe? Why is he bringing terrorists to New York City, the scene
of the crime, when they're going through a civil court? Is this man's
heart in victory?
[ ]
My perception is that his heart is not in it. Hence, the
dithering and delay over Afghanistan. And the half-hearted idea of what
we're going to do there. Hence, the criminal prosecution of CIA and the
trials in New York City.
Frankly, I think Afghanistan is a losing situation. The country is not amenable to "nation-building." But Obama was the one who said it was the "necessary" war.
He needs to man up. If he thinks he was wrong, he needs to say it and commit to withdrawing our troops. If he thinks he was right, he needs to go "all in" and get the job done.
What's this about laying out a plan for a surge AND a plan for withdrawing troops? That sends mixed messages to the Taliban and everyone else!
He wants to portray himself as a strong leader, but as Varney said, his heart's not in it.
That's why he needs West Point Cadets as a backdrop for his speech.

LOL, I guess the chickens are coming home to roost. Quite a few Dems voted for the war in Afghanistan and now they have it. Its their war and they will botch it up. Duh Vain One should have given the troops months ago when they were first requested so they could be moved in and setup.
Obama and his advisors most likely know nothing about war and think its like a video game or a movie where logistics don't count. Instant deployment and placement. The SCM will cover for him and applaud hi corageous decision going against his parties wishes. Duh VAin One will win the war Bush got us into; all hail Duh Vain One.

Tue, 12/01/2009 - 14:59 ET by celatorObama has several goals to accomplish tonight. Among them:
1. Make sure we know he has his big boy pants (the pair that doesn't have an embroidered picture of Che Guevara on the back pocket).
2. Blame the previous administration for not "doing the job".
3. Put on his serious look, to suggest this is a real important speech and he's real, real serious.
4. Avoid using the word victory.
5. Confuse as many people as possible as to what the blazes he is really saying and what the real outcome of his plan is supposed to be.
6. Convince the American people that if his plan works, he gets all the credit, if it fails it's our fault.
7. Make sure we don't connect his time-wasting dithering on the issue with the jihadists' need to buy time to arm themselves to the hilt and complete their recruiting and training before we surge.
8. Leave himself all sorts of openings if this thing doesn't work.
9. Convince us that he knows what is going on.
10. Create a timetable so the jihadists know how long they have to hide in the mountains until we leave.
No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

Cheers Noel Chandler of Okeechobee Florida
Tue, 12/01/2009 - 18:38 ET by kangarooI am in Okeechobee Florida right now, we have a property up here and I am planting as many fruit trees as I can. any way every 3 years we can get free mulch from the county, they give it to us to save the dump fee of 200 bucks or so a load. We have some wicked neighbors that live well over half a mile away, and put stop to that today reporting it as trash. Well a few phone calls from us the citizens and we are now aloud to get the mulch. The company went ballistic from being stopped, we went ballistic cause we couldn't get the mulch that we were promised, we both whispered lawsuit, and with in hours all was resolved. We are 20 miles out of town in a small community on the Kissimee River, The county Commissioner Noel Chandler District 2 took time out of his day to come out here to see what the problem was, I say cause the perverbale sheet hit the fan somewhere along the line. He said yep that is mulch so we are back in biz, We were only going to get some mulch but they are sending every truckload here, excellent!!!! I guess they got really peaved at these need to get a life nobodys trying to rock the boat mongrals. Anyway want to give a shout out to Noel Chandler no matter if you are a dem or repub, thanks for caring enough to stop the maddness of some. Cheers
