For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: Ft. Hood's implications for gun rights.

Last week’s shootings, which killed 13 people and wounded more than 30, demonstrated once again the folly of “gun-free zones,” which attract and assist people bent on mass murder instead of deterring them.

Judging from the comments of those who support this policy of victim disarmament, Smith’s desire for a gun was irrational. According to Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, “This latest tragedy, at a heavily fortified army base, ought to convince more Americans to reject the argument that the solution to gun violence is to arm more people with more guns in more places.”

Note how the reference to “a heavily fortified army base” obscures the crucial point that the people attacked by Hasan were unarmed as a matter of policy. Also note the breathtaking inanity of Helmke’s assurance that “more guns” are not “the solution to gun violence.” In this case, they assuredly were.

Where guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. Seems pretty straightforward, no?

What idiots like Helmke overlook is the fact

that Hasan was stopped by a gun. But only after he had fired approximately 100 rounds killing 13 and wounding 30. I do believe if young Smith had been allowed to carry on Ft. Hood, the situation would have ended sooner. But then, I'm just an old gun clinging redneck with no sophistication.

Hint to the left....they have their freedom because of our military, past and present...and this is the thanks they always get...especially on a day like today.

MY gratitude is sent to all in the military today-past and present. Our family is eternally grateful.

Obama: the Coward In Chief

This morning started an Obama full press push back on Morning Joe with Tina Brown and a NY TImes reporter claiming the Fort Hood massacre happened because of the gun lobby and Chicago's Major Daley blamed the incident on "our love of guns."

The hardest thing to do is to confront what it right in front of your nose. What Obama and the left do is take the easier path which is to deny what is in front of your nose and bury your head in the sand - or the Ostrich Strategy.

This country has got to stop this ostrich approach to our Muslim problem. This man was a terrorist. Muslims preach intolerance of all other religions and the idea of Jihad aginst infidels if Islam.

They prey of Muslims individually who may be disturbed or disillusioned as was this man. The people who committed 9/11 were not any different than Nadal and to pretend differently is being an Ostrich.

What happened to Nadal is happening in all of our communities behind the closed doors of mosques who pretend to preach peace.

We need to take our heads out of the sand and confront Muslims in this country to aggressively purge their religion of all radicals.

Like I said on another

Like I said on another thread. Felons can't buy guns legally. So my form of gun contol would stop Muslims from buying guns.  We know but our government does not know that we need to control Islam.

Purge their religion of all radicals

To do this, you must first purge that religion of the Koran. That's the source of all of this. Any religion that relies upon a book that tells its followers to kill anyone not of the same faith can't be relied upon to become stable.

No Guns

I think the attack at Ft. Hood shows the folly of gun control. Military Bases have a no gun policy. You are not even allowed a knife on the base or fort. It truly does not give argument for gun control, but against it. Anyone who says different has never been in the military and doesn't know what they are talking about.

I could go off on a rant

but I already read a good one on this subject, by one of the best milbloggers on the internet.  Scroll down to "A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" (he refers to Hasan as TMSOS, the murdering sack of ****):

There is only one clear option if we want to prevent, or at least limit
the severity of these types of attacks in the future:  allow soldiers
(who trust each other implicitly, with their lives in combat) to carry
concealed privately owned weapons.  If a soldier is A)  Allowed by
statue to own a pistol, and B)  Allowed by the state to carry a
concealed weapon in states which allow it or, in states that don't, the
provost martial can authorize CCWs for on-post carry, then he should be
allowed to do so.  Keeping us unarmed makes us just as ripe a target
for terrorists as schools.  If only 5% of the 39 people killed or
wounded had a weapon to defend themselves, two people would have had
the means to stop TMSOS.  How many would be alive and uninjured if our
policies for "force protection" actually allowed the force to protect
itself.  Remember, I'm not suggesting issuing weapons for carry, just
allowing soldiers to carry a concealed, privately owned weapon, on
base, in and out of uniform.  We trust these soldiers in combat.  We
trust them on ranges and in training.  We trust them with all manner of
deadly and dangerous weapons and explosives.  Yet for some reason, we
don't trust them to carry a concealed weapon.

Every soldier and civilian in that gym was at the mercy of  TMSOS, and
he wasn't showing any mercy that day.  Only when a civilian contacted
police officer arrived (minutes later, when lifespans were measured in
seconds) was TMSOS stopped.  Sadly, until this policy is changed, we
will continue to be sheepdogs when deployed but sheep at the mercy of
wolves, or wolves in sheepdog's clothing, when we are at home, because
we are forced by our superiors' policies to be defenseless.  All I ask
for is the answer to just one question:

Can you demonstrate one time or place, throughout all history, where the average person was made safer by restricting access to handheld weapons?

And since safety and comprehensive risk management is at the
cornerstone of what we believe and how we plan, shouldn't we focus on
how we can best protect the force from future incidents of mass
murdering terrorists attacking us or our families or children on post?
We can't hire an MP to put on every street corner and in every building
(because they would soon just spend all their time setting up speed
traps for driving 22 in a 20--which is my perception of how MPs spend
99% of their "out in public" duty time.)  We can't catch everyone
coming on post with a weapon.  We can't take all the privately owned
weapons on post and store them in unit Arms rooms.  Because in the end,
it'll be someone who doesn't follow the regulation to secure their
weapons who then goes and murders unarmed soldiers, or worse, their
family members.

can only see one clear answer to protecting the force from future
occurrences of mass-murder.  Maybe that shows a lack of imagination or
understanding on my part, but at least, unlike J. Edgar Hoover and FDR,
I'm not advocating rounding up every person of a certain ethnicity or
religion and putting them in concentration camps.  I'm just suggesting
allowing soldiers the ability to defend themselves, and each other,
from this ever happening again.  I'd even bet (if we are so afraid of
concealed weapons,) that many would opt to carry openly, if that were
allowed in uniform.  Being that we ARE a stratified society, the Army
policy doesn't have to even be fair.  If it's a trust issue, the
commander can limit the regulation to include only Officers and NCO's,
or just officers. (Which has historical precedent.)

Sums it up pretty neatly, I think.

I hope he fails, too.

What is a vet?

Everything I have read ascribes this to Father Dennis O’Brien USMC.

What Is A Veteran? Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged scar, a burn or even certain look in the eye. Others may carry the evidence inside them: a pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg - or perhaps another sort of inner steel: The soul's ally forged in the refinery of adversity, Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem. You can't tell a veteran just by looking at them.

What is a vet?

He is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn't run out of fuel.

He is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the cosmic scales by four hours of exquisite bravery near the 38th parallel.

She - or he - is the nurse who fought against futility and went to sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang.

He is the POW who went away one person and came back another - or didn't come back AT ALL.

He is the Parris Island drill instructor who has never seen combat - but has saved countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account rednecks and gang members into Marines, and teaching them to watch each other's backs.

He is the parade - riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand.

He is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals pass him by.

He is the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb of the Unknowns, whose presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory of all the anonymous heroes whose valor dies unrecognized with them on the battlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep.

He is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket - palsied now and aggravatingly slow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the nightmares come.

He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary human being - a person who offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs.

He is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and he is nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known.

He was my father, a man whose departure has left a pair of shoes that I can't fill by half.

He was my friend.  He watched my back when I was watching his.

He was the high school classmate whose body was never recovered. He was everybody's dad back in the 50's, and we were all proud of them.

He was the nameless Lieutenant who wiped the spit of demonstrators off his clean uniform.

He is my brother, my cousin, my uncle.

He was our grandfathers.  And he was at times afraid, but he did his duty in spite of his fear, because he thought we had something worth fighting for.

So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean over and say "Thank You." That's all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than any medals they could have been awarded or were awarded.

Old media species: Moonbat-a-saurus-rex. Getting more endangered by the day.

As demostrated by this

As demostrated by this latest incident, the implication for gun rights is that those advocates for more restrictive policies will miss no opportunity to assert their misguided beliefs on everyone else. To somehow twist logic by creating an apples/oranges argument between civilian policy and military policy is absurd. Military personnel are trained professionals in regard to firearms, and the fact that guns would be restricted on a military base defies logic.

Consider this

God only knows how many of these jihadists are in this country, whether they are home grown or have come here via our porous northern and southern borders. The fact is, if our guns are taken away what the hell are we going to use against them, HARSH LANGUAGE!!

I believe there are more of these jihadists in this country, a lot more and I also believe that the American public, your ordinary gun owning citizen might very well be the last line of defense against a complete takeover of our country, much like the militia's were in the revolution.

I know one thing, that if liberals want my guns and my ammunition, come and take them if you have the guts, I'll be glad to give them to you, one round at a time.

Good grief!  Was he really serious?

I'm verklempt.

Let's also remember how he was stopped

He walked into a building full of unarmed US Service members and civilian support staff.  He killed 13.  He injured 30.  How was he stopped from killing and injuring even more?  A 5'2" woman civilian police officer stepped up and shot him 4 times with her own service handgun - taking one shot herself in the process.

"Proof again that tighter gun laws are needed."  Please - if just 10% of the occupants of that building (all of which are ideal targets of our country's enemies, and many of which are regularly trusted with our country's most advanced weapons of war) had been carrying a simple sidearm, how many FEWER would've been killed and injured?

WELL!!! That's just more

WELL!!!

That's just more proof that the cops should have their guns taken away too!

Too many guns caused this act of war.

And I don't worry whether the guy next to me is carrying.  Likely he thinks I am too.

LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

Where's the proof?

In every country that has banned firearms, crimes with the use of firearms has increased.  Even in cities in this country, the ones with the worse violence are those with the strictest gun control laws.  The stupidity of blaming the weapon for the crime goes beyond comprehension.

Instead of blaming the terrorist who commited these crimes, they want to blame the weapon.  Instead of blaming the total failure of our government in preventing this from happening when it's becoming very obvious that he was sending off warning flags all over the place, they blame the weapon.  Instead of admitting that every agency involved in his investigation failed miserably in doing their job and then correcting these failures, they blame the weapon.

How many more terrorist attacks will we have to endure under this administration before we do something about the terrorist here in our country?  Who cares if they are offended. I'm all for offending them. Heck, maybe if they got offended, they would go back to where  they came from!!!!  Why does this government feel the need to coddle and kiss up to those who hate us and want to destroy us?  It goes beyond any form of explenation to understand this.  And even more shameful is the media's part in justifying this terrorist attack and their attempts to excuse the terrorist and point the finger at the victims.

Something very sick and perverted has taken over out government and media.  Thank God that people are starting to waken up and see what has happened.

What have we come to when

What have we come to when our military is not allowed arms on their own base. And the outcry from the sychophants? More Gun Control!! If we banned guns altogether this wouldnt have happened!

Our military has a no gun policy on base, the soldiers we employ to protect us are not allowed to carry and the result is they get shot up, killing 13 on US soil by a Muslim Madman and the only outrage I have seen expressed is over Gun Control? Lord Help us.

Interesting comparisons

Isn't it interesting that this reminds me of what happened with Virginia Tech?  How so?  Well, the guy who did Virginia Tech prepared ahead of time for his shooting rampage(oh yeah, he even saw a hooker prior to his shooting, imagine that).  He scouted out the area, even blocked some doors, and so on.

Hasan was at best an infiltrator and a sleeper agent at worst.  He knew how Ft Hoot operated in terms of guns and security and so on.  He knew from the inside who his best targets are, what location, and so on.  Those are not the actions of a stressed out man or whatever they want to attribute to this incident.

To the soldiers who were attacked, they were attacked by someone they thought was one of their own.    Of course as it turns out, the FBI already knew about this guy a year prior to this, they knew he was someone who had a connection with the same group that caused the 9/11 incident.  The blame for this goes very high up.

I said before that it was bad enough that morale in the military is way down, but when something like this SHOULD have been prevented by taking the guy down long before this happened, I wouldn't be surprised if fewer people were to enlist(or re-enlist) once they realize what's going on at the higher levels.

Heads need to roll on this.

knee jerk cowardice

If only there weren't so many guns.....

Well, there are.  And here's another fact that liberals continually ignore:  A handgun is a great equalizer.  An armed woman will successfully resist an attacker 99 times out of 100 without having to shoot (would that more did).  When a single man is facing a gang of thugs, a handgun evens the odds tremendously.  Crime rates in "shall issue" states are down considerably.  Citizens with CCW permits comitting criminal acts are extremely rare.

Humans have been killing each other since the dawn of mankind.  Weapons remove the basic inequality between brute force/numbers and the more civil/productive.  Criminals will pick up weapons, and armed citizens will remove those from the gene pool.

Examine the realities of ANY mass shootings of the hundred years. The killers go for the "soft targets".  Large numbers of unarmed and confined targets.  The result of brandishing a weapon among armed citizens is predictable, and final.  Is this why liberals want us disarmed?

My Signature sums up Liberal Gun Control

Gun Control - The theory that a woman found dead in an alley, raped and strangled with her own pantyhose, is somehow morally superior to a woman explaining to police how her attacker got that fatal bullet wound.

If liberals are so convinced that 'gun control' works, why don't they erect a sign in their front yard saying this:

Bad Precedent

I am concerned that as a result of Fort Hood, terrorists now realize that a military base is not as difficult a target for attack as they may have assumed. It looks like almost as easy a target as most colleges and schools, which have always been considered the softest targets.

Under President Bush, the plot against Ft. Dix was thwarted.

Way to go with that Ft. Hood thing, Mr. Obama!  "Your watch" is broken.

Thanks to Hurricane Ida's remnants we are having a cool, rainy, windy day. I am suffering from a bit of the East Carolina Crud so I can't go out for the activities if they are being held at all.

I met Metal of Honor receiptiant Jerry Crump one time at the VFW in Lincolnton, NC. He too died of a freak car wreck on his way home one night. He was working as an ROTC instuctor at Davidson College when he struck a parch of black ice. His car when off the road and down an embankment killing him.

Never forget that Ole Blood and Guts himself, Gen. George S. Patton, too died in a vehicle accident.

Until I See My Leftie Neighbors Give Up THEIR Guns

... I will not be worried, despite the drumbeat of propaganda from the MSM.  Armstrong & Getty, a morning drivetime talk radio show in Northern California (knew910.com), had an interesting call on Tue. 11/10.  The caller claimed to be a Muslim who had served in the Army in the 1990s.  You might expect him to launch into a rant about mistreatment of Muslims in the military and other grievances, but the caller complained about the policy change in 1993 when the military forced Officers on bases to stop carrying weapons.  His contention?  If Officers at Ft. Hood had been armed, they might've been able to stop Hasan sooner rather than later, while waiting for civilian police to arrive. Quite a surprising, atypical response.  People like the protection that having a gun affords.  As long as criminals have guns, average citizens (including Libs) will want to have guns.

I don't recall officers ever carrying on post. When they paid us in cash the officer was always armed as was one of his sargents. That is the only time I saw them carry a load weapon. MP's were the only others had loaded weapons.

We were never issued ammo when we picked up our weapons. Got that once we got to the range or training area. All brass and ammo had to be turned in before leaving the area.

I posted an item from a milblogger, above.  He stated that there was an historical precedent for officers being armed in garrison, but of course, that could go back to Custer's time.  I suppose we dould do some searching on the internet.

It only makes sense that someone who is licensed to conceal carry should be allowed to do so on a military installation.  Particularly in this day and age (and we have alot of open bases here).

I hope he fails, too.

Rick, that's my memory also.

Rick, that's my memory also. I go to the local Navy base occasionally and there is a huge sign that warns: "NO Weapons may be brought onto this base by anyone entering the property." There are occasional checks--going over every inch of your vehicle with mirrors and a dog, but not often. It's probably 100 percent of all vehicles checked these days though, given the Ft. Hood tragedy.

No citizen's right to life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, or property is safe as long as Obama is President of the United States.

Never have I seen armed anyone on base except cops

No way in hell.  I, as an officer, once entered base with two boxes of shotgun shells and (lucky me!) my truck was searched that morning in a random selection.  When they saw the shells - the shells, mind you - they freaked.  The cops (SF) thought for SURE they had found a vehicle with a gun!

Unfortunately for them I own no shotgun and was taking them to the range that day for some shooting with a rented gun.

Milwaukee muggers are patriotic

Four men who mugged a Milwaukee Army reservist at gunpoint returned his belongings and thanked him for his service after finding the Military ID.

HERE is the link to the story.

Happy Veteran's Day to my fellow vets! (US Navy Submarine Service 1971-1979)

Why is no one talking about..

1. Lone gunman.

2. Screaming "Allah Achbar"

3. Armed with 2 semi auto pistols.

4. In the vacinity of over 600 people.

5. Gets off over 100 rounds??

He would have to reload several times! What are we not being told?

"The bureaucracy is growing to meet the needs of the growing bureaucracy"

MM...he had one of these...

The most powerful type of ammunition for the FN 5.7 gun is available only to law enforcement and military personnel. Gun control advocates call it a "cop killer" weapon because that ammo can pierce bulletproof vests, and its use by Mexican drug cartels worries police. (one clip carries 20 rounds) from here

v

Re FN

By the way, it appears that the anti-2nd Amendment groups' claims that with the restricted armor-piercing ammunition Hasan's gun can penetrate standard body armor may be false.

"The Five-SeveN pistol was released to the U.S. civilian market in 2004. Shortly thereafter, the Brady Campaign and a trio of anti-gun law enforcement organizations made the claim that the gun was a “cop killer.” This claim was based upon a misrepresentation of marketing materials discussing the pistol’s capabilities using SS190 armor-piercing ammunition and non-certified “tests” that were contradicted by more stringent and controlled testing done by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (BATF)."

http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/

Hasan was not using the restricted ammunition. I believe he chose that weapon for the large magazine, not the claims of armor-piercing capability. He suspected that he would be under fire and probably die while reloading.

MM..update on Hasan the 'lone gunman'

Mr Shy found this article:

  • The gunman quickly reloaded his weapon, methodically moving away from Spc. Logan Burnette after shooting him several times during last week's deadly rampage at the Fort Hood Army Post.

"He was very swift, very tactical," Burnette told reporters Wednesday outside the Metroplex Adventist Hospital near Fort Hood.

  • Army 1st Sgt. James McLeod, of Fort Hood's 467th Combat Stress Control Detachment, told reporters he was there when the shootings occurred.

"I can't really say that the perpetrator of this was really one of our own," McLeod said. "Soldiers do not do this to each other, so this is something a little bit different."

...seems he was well 'trained' in what he was doing.

Re Columbia prof

In some articles I have read on this, it is not made clear that the victim was a woman. They use words like Columbia employee, or coworker, etc.

Not only will he go free, I suggest that the victim will be pressured by her employer to drop any charges and she will be sent to 'Diversity Awareness' training to assist her in recognizing how she drove the professor to violence.

Today would be a good day to be in Fredricksburg, Texas at the Pacific War Museum.

The home of Admiral Nimitz, the museum occupies several locations and one of the best museums on war I have ever seen.

I would like to express my appreciation to the people that created and manage the institution!

Nimitz's home

That is no lie.  I have had the privilege to visit that museum and buy some items from its bookstore some years back.  If any of you are in TX, you gotta go there.  Only 62 miles from San Antonio.

Both my parents are from there.

Some years back, two work buddies and I were on our way to the Guadalupe River for our annualLabor Day lost weekend.  As we entered Fredericksburg, we realized there was a Parade going on.

We found a place to stand and watch, and here comes Former President Bush I and Eddie Albert, in the back of a convertible.  They were expanding the WWII Museum to include a chunk of real estate around the old Nimitz Steamboat Hotel.

CNN.

The Most Trusted Name In Tarring & Feathering The GOP Brand With Its Choice of Words.

Check out this homepage-featured piece on Michelle Bachmann "crashing the party", with this as the blurb:

In many ways, Michele Bachmann is the ideal political creature of the Tea Party era. Her path to power doesn't lie in moving up the GOP leadership ladder, but in ignoring it entirely. FULL STORY.

Then when you click on that, you get this headline:

Michele Bachmann's 'high stakes' political game grows

And then the article, which I'm just starting to read and I'm sure features a plethora of more carefully chosen words and phrases.

We are "creatures" seeking out a "path to power", "ignoring entirely" (reckless, I tell you!) the moderate/RINOs, "crashing the party" (unhinged!!) and playing high stakes "games".....

JOKE OF THE DAY:

One day a fourth-grade teacher asked the children what their fathers
did for a living.. All the typical answers came up -- fireman,
mechanic, businessman, salesman, doctor, lawyer, and so forth.

However, little Justin was being uncharacteristically quiet, so
when the teacher prodded him about his father, he finally replied,

'Okay...my father's an exotic dancer in a gay cabaret and takes off
all his clothes in front of other men and they put money in his
underwear.

Sometimes, if the offer is really good, he will go home with some guy and stay with him all night for money.'

The teacher, obviously shaken by this statement, hurriedly set the
other children to work on some exercises and then took little Justin
aside to ask him, 'Is that really true about your father?'

'No', the boy said, 'He actually works for the Democratic National
Committee and helped get Barack Obama elected President last year, but
I was too embarrassed to say that in front of the class.'

Veterans Day

I discovered a new version of one of my favorite songs....a fitting tribute to the Greatest Generation on Veterans Day.

I talked to my step-dad today, he will be 87 next month.  He flew B-17's.  My uncle (who was in the Pacific) is still with us....but we lost another family friend just yesterday.  These wonderful men and women won't be with us much longer.  We owe them so much....too much to let our country be taken away by greedy politicians and idealogues.

To all of our veterans, my sincerest thanks.

I hope he fails, too.

God Bless the Vet

Our fighting men and women are in the midst of a war. The General on the ground asks for additional troops to help those on the frontlines. The Commander-in-Chief dithers for months as our troops wait. And wait. And wait. And die.

This is dereliction of duty by the so-called CIC.

That's a High Crime in my book.

Two
U.S. Secret Service armored vehicles used to protect Vice President
Biden struck and killed a pedestrian in Temple Hills early Wednesday
morning, authorities said.

The vehicles were traveling together from Andrews Air Force Base at
about 2:30 a.m. when the pedestrian was hit at the intersection of
Suitland Parkway and Naylor Road in Temple Hills, U.S. Park Police said.

snip of comments:

You know, for years I've been saying that the way SS tears up the DC
streets in their trucks will result with an pedestrian getting killed.
I hope. No, I PRAY, that this incident is a reality check to all of the
SS behind the wheel, thinking that they're better than everyone else on
the road. Doesn't matter who you outrank when you kill someone by
accident, buddy boy. -Hurricane

Must be W's fault! -1415dr

Everyone who lives in DC and/or works downtown has been afraid this would be
them. The Secret Service are very inconsiderate drivers, especially
when it comes to pedestrians. Maybe now someone higher up will get wind
of the problem, and something will be done about it. I'm not going to
count on it, though. - rufrignkidnme
