For general discussion and debate. Possible talking point: confessions of an ObamaCare supporter.
[The New Yorker's John] Cassidy is more honest than the politicians whose dishonesty he supports. "The U.S. government is making a costly and open-ended commitment," he writes. "Let's not pretend that it isn't a big deal, or that it will be self-financing, or that it will work out exactly as planned. It won't. What is really unfolding, I suspect, is the scenario that many conservatives feared. The Obama Administration ... is creating a new entitlement program, which, once established, will be virtually impossible to rescind."Why are they doing it? Because, according to Mr. Cassidy, ObamaCare serves the twin goals of "making the United States a more equitable country" and furthering the Democrats' "political calculus." In other words, the purpose is to further redistribute income by putting health care further under government control, and in the process making the middle class more dependent on government. As the party of government, Democrats will benefit over the long run.
Finally, some honesty.

Sure. But we didn't need that, of course. They could all stay perfectly tight-lipped and we'd still know that was the purpose of Marxcare.
Also, we know there is NO altrusim in robbery, I mean "wealth redistribution". It PURELY furthers their power aims by creating dependency, as this guy freely admits.
That kind of "political calculus" as he calls it is fully ILLEGAL under the United States constitution.
Democracy does not have the right to rob from producers and give to non-producers. That is NOT the purpose of democracy. That is a form of nation-destroying weapon.

I don't understand how anyone can think that "lib" is a viable political point of view, given all the facts that we have available to us today.
I mean back in the 70s, when all you had was the networks, sure I can understand how you'd be a lib. But now we know how much we've been lied to, how it's nothing but a constant stream of propaganda, how they ignore important facts and just push their agenda. How anyone can see these things and still call themselves "lib" - it doesn't make any sense to me.
Who we call "libs" today are actually leftists - ruled by tribe, not issues. To be conservative is the only reasonable, people-focused politics today. The left is in bed with the really big money, trying to force totalitarian rule on America.
Conservatives want minorities to succeed, leftists want them forced into victimhood like the palestinian camps so they have a reliable voting bloc.
Anyone calling themselves "lib" have picked the wrong horse & been duped. Or they're perfectly happy with the above as some are.

Memo to NB - Ban Shawn
November 10, 2009 - 13:29 ET by ThisnThatNB Staff -- Shawn, et al are complaing that they are getting no respect from their lefty friends at other sites. Why? Because they have no badge of honor from Newsbusters, that's why. For their sake; for mercy; doggone it, for humanity -- please issue a ban. The ban can be temporary; but it must be on their record.
As for all other NBer's: When Shawn is banned, it's time to gather around a post and let him have it. Complain about his past posts; cheer the fact that he's banned; and welcome the fact that we'll never have to deal with his outrageous comments ever again.

Pistol Pete
November 10, 2009 - 13:56 ET by general companyThe best ever, has to be Maravich. Might not of been the best Pro, but he is still the all-time leading NCAA Division I scorer with 3,667 points scored and an average of 44.2 points per game. Keep in mind, there was no 3 point shoot in those days. He was also a quality person, and we lost him much to soon.

November 10, 2009 - 14:04 ET by Cool ArrowHe was the Dick Fosbury of basketball.
Everything fell into place for the phenomenon. Had his father not been coach, I doubt LSU would have bought into his atypical ball-handling style (now the standard in the NBA).
Why this Globetrotter style was not taken seriously until Maravich, I don't know, but he brought it into the real game.

Kareem vs. Pistol Pete
November 10, 2009 - 22:49 ET by easygoerYou forgot to add that Maravich did it in three years (as did Kareem, freshmen couldn't play varsity then). But while I love Maravich, I don't believe that any NBA GM or head coach, if they had to choose one player to start their team with, would pick Maravich over Kareem. While Maravich is statistically the greatest scorer in college history, he was the only player on very mediocre teams. He never even played in the NCAA Tournament! Kareem won the NCAA championship in all three varsity seasons. There's no doubt in my mind that had Kareem played on those LSU teams and Maravich didn't, Kareem would have scored as much, if not more, than Pistol Pete did. And would have, at least made the tournament. Likewise, I doubt UCLA would have won three championships in a row with Maravich instead of Kareem. Another example, when Kareem was a freshman he led the freshman team to a 75-60 rout of the UCLA varsity team in a scrimmage. They were no ordinary team, either. They were the defending NCAA champs and were ranked numer one at the time. He poured in 51 points in that scrimmage. Almost personally outscored the entire varsity team. Also, the NCAA banned the dunk because of Kareem.
As for their pro careers, there really is no comparison. His first season he transformed perennial patsies, the Milwaukee Bucks, from a 27-55 team to a 56-26 one. The following year they won the championship. Kareem led the league in scoring twice (Maravich once). Had a higher career scoring average (24.6 to 24.1). Had a much higher field goal percentage (55.9% to 44.1%) And, most importantly, won a record six MVP awards and six championships. Maravich won neither. Having said all that, Pete was an absolute magician with the ball. Seemed to defy physics. I rememer watching him drop in 68 points against my Knicks in 1977.Good guy, as well. As is Kareem.
Well,
November 10, 2009 - 23:28 ET by general companyActualy Pete did play his Frosh year, 17 games averaged 43 points per game. But the NCAA did not count those numbers back then.
While Maravich is statistically the greatest scorer in college history, he was the only player on very mediocre teams.
The year before he came to LSU their record was 3-20, in his last season they finished 20-8 . Out of 83 College games he scored over 50, 28 times.
There's no doubt in my mind that had Kareem played on those LSU teams
and Maravich didn't, Kareem would have scored as much, if not more,
than Pistol Pete did.
Ridiculous statement, it is easier to score with good players on your team, watch any video of Pete, he was double and tripled teamed constantly. UCLA was on another planet back then. Kareem played well above the rim, while Pete was shooting from wherever, if there was 3 point he would had averaged 60 or so, Kareem would not had improved his point total at all. Once in the Pro's, Kareems longevity and teammates help make him one of the NBA's greatest ever. Now I apreaciate what Kareem and other accomplished, I just think Pete was a little better, with a harder row to hoe.
Wierd tidbit about Pete: Maravich had told Pennsylvania reporter, Andy Nuzzo, "I don't want to play 10 years in the NBA and then die of a heart attack at 40."
Witch is exactly what he did.
My Gov. thinks I am dangerous, so be careful
"Television is a freak show" Bernie Goldberg
GC
November 11, 2009 - 04:06 ET by easygoerI must respectfully disagree. While it's true that it is easier to score with better players around you, there was no stopping Kareem back then. He was just too big. There were hardly any seven footers back then. Certainly, none with the skill of Kareem. Why do you think they banned the dunk? You speak of no three pointers back then. That certainly kept Pete's average lower. But Pete's career shooting percentage at LSU was 43.8. He was a helluva shooter but I doubt his three point percentage would have been much higher. If the dunk wasn't disallowed, what would have been Kareem's shooting percentage on dunks, 99%? As it was his career shooting percentage at UCLA was 63.9%. Banning the dunk was probably the best thing to happen to him for it forced him to develop his skyhook. Which is the most lethal shot the game has ever seen. I've seen it happen many times. When his team really needed a basket they invariably fed it to Kareem in the low post. Even at the end of his career when he was surrounded by others who could score, like Worthy, Magic, Scott and McAdoo.
Who cares if Kareem played above the rim? Both these guys were incredibly gifted by God. One of Kareem's gifts was his height combined with agility. Other very tall men from that era, like Artis Gilmore and Bill Walton, also played above the rim and couldn't score like him. Kareem was also double and triple teamed. He should be downgraded for kicking the ball out for an open shot? For playing a team game, according to Wooden's philosophy? In addition to having a rule changed specifically for him which took away a shot he'd never miss? The name of the game is winning, not scoring gobs of points by taking every shot. Maravich was an outstanding passer and if he was double and triple teamed as much as you say (I don't doubt that he was) either his teamates were a bunch of bricklayers who couldn't hit a wide open shot or Maravich's father told him to take every shot. With Kareem on that team Press Maravich would have had Kareem taking all the shots. You also refer to how Maravich improved his team, He took a putrid team and tuned them into a mediocre one in a lily white conference. Yeah, he went 20-8 his final year but the two years prior, LSU went 13-13 and 14-12. The SEC wasn't exactly a powerhouse basketball conference back in the 1960s what with their mostly white teams. Remember all white Kentucky's (the SEC's best team back then ) loss to Texas Western.
The year prior to Kareem's joining the Varsity squad, UCLA went a disappointing (for them) 18-8. The following year with Kareem they were undefeated and won the championship. Again, it's about winning. He should be penalized for playing within the system laid out for him? There's no doubt in my mind that LSU would have been a better tteam with Kareem instead of Maravich. And there's no doubt that UCLA with Maravich instead of Kareem would not have gone a combined 88-2 with three championships. And those two losses he had a a legitimate excuse. The first loss to Elvin Hayes' Houston Cougars he had a scratch on on his cornea ansd scored only 15 points. In the rematch in the tournament UCLA destroyed Houston 101-69. The second loss to USC could be attributed to USC playing a four corners type stall game. Maravich was also not known for his defense (to put it mildly) while Kareem was an outstanding shot blocker and alterer and force in the paint. Finally, I'll stick with the point I made in my previous post. You won't find a GM, coach, scout or writer who'd take Maravich over Kareem. Maravich wasn't even the first pick in his draft. Kareem was. Only a mad man wouldn't have picked him first the year he came out. Just my two cents. Nice back and forth with you.
Well I dont agree
November 11, 2009 - 15:43 ET by general companyThere's no doubt in my mind that LSU would have been a better tteam
with Kareem instead of Maravich. And there's no doubt that UCLA with
Maravich instead of Kareem would not have gone a combined 88-2 with
three championships.
I dont believe this for a minute, if you swapped these guys, the teams would had been right about where they were.
As you say, UCLA was 18-8 the year before Kareem arrived, then they went undefeated a +8 in game won. While LSU was 3-20 before Pete, and 13-13 after, a +10 wins.
Dont get me wrong now, I think a lot of Kareem, easy in my top 10 players I enjoyed watching. But like Wilt, Shaq, and Olajuwon, they played prominently in the paint. While these guys were good, they did not display the overall prowess and ball handling as Jordan, Bird, Magic, DR J, or Pistol Pete.
But look its fine, a good argument could be made for most of the Players mentioned in this thread.

November 10, 2009 - 23:52 ET by JerBeing one month younger than Kareem and one month older than Maravich (if he were still alive), and having watched both play numerous times during my college years, I will offer this opinion: Pistol Pete was the most talented college basketball player I had ever seen until Jordan [although the latter's extraordinary abilities weren't quite so apparent before his professional career], but Kareem was far more dominant than Maravich and clearly the player any NBA GM would prefer as a franchise player.

Unlike American industry -- which he hates with a passion -- he'll tour Japanese plants and praise them. And totally unlike past presidents, he will use this as an opportnity to announce a unilatoral disarmament of nuclear weapons.

Don't they find it suspicious that the people lobbying and campaigning for socialized medicine belong to the SEIU ? The whole point to unions is negotiating benefits for their members from their employers.
Are these union members sooooo nice that they are lobbying for government run healthcare for people who aren't members of their organization? Did the SEIU become the organization for government aid for everyone?
The people without health insurance aren't clamoring for socialized medicine, it's the unions. The people who already have the private healthcare, the people who are paid by their members to negotiate private healthcare benefits are the ones pushing for this.

November 10, 2009 - 13:40 ET by ThisnThatI'm tired and outraged at opening my mail, or turning on the TV, and listening to another liberal bash private industry. Today, I received a mailing from Carol Shea Porter (NH) touting her "military connections" (more on that below). In particular, the National Defense Authorization Act of 2010.
And what does she claim she did? "I inserted language and ammendments that will: Hold reckless defense contractors accountable if their shoddy work results in the serious injury or death of our service members".
She was judge, jury, and executioner here. Note that her position is "that defense contractors are reckless". Like the insurance industry, or automotive, or banking -- industry is all evil, all the time, according to these idiots. Therefore, every bill in Congress must be punitive. I guess she is doing this because she believes everyone agrees -- private industry is the root of all evil in the United States, and if they (libs) can't kill the industry, then at least they can punish it.
BTW, she has a picture of her and 4 military troops. They are all women. No military man needs to apply. Shea porter is sexist and as dumb as a bag of rocks.
